If he goes on pretending it was an accident on China's part, he may be able to squeeze more concessions out of them.

Sad but true. You have to prove that they a) KNEW that the item was false, and that b) they published or said the offending material with the INTENTION of causing harm. And you can't just say they had the intention, you have to have something like a signed and notarized document in which the accused says "yes I am doing this for the only intention of harming the victim."

If we can't get Biden's sealed records, we can certainly get Mitchell's. He's been out of public office for a long time, but he's certainly gotten rich from many ventures - he was on the board of Disney, for instance.

This sounds incredibly promising, Walgreens, CVS with the drive-thru tests, the diagnostic issues.
But we sat here in the Rose Garden back on March 13, and these companies were here, some other companies were here.
By my count only 69 drive-thru test sites have been set up by the companies that were here.

Get concessions now while we're regrouping, and we can always 'find new intelligence' later when we're ready to take harsher measures. If we declare war now, all the production capacity currently in China stays there. If we keep things murky for a while maybe China lets some of it go, figuring that in 'the long game' we'll go back to wanting cheap shit again.

It's actually what happened, but the details are even worse. As soon as the CCP realized the gravity of the virus, it locked down Wuhan and forbad flights from there to the rest of China. Nonetheless, it continued to allow people in Wuhan/Hubei Province to travel to Europe and the United States. Its puppet at WHO denied person to person transmission all through February.
This would be cause for war except (1) China has nukes and (2) the PRC literally controls our access to pharmaceuticals and medical devices. Also, there is a huge Fifth Column among the political, media and corporate classes ready to do China's bidding.

I think Trump is trying to project hope.
But I agree that the sparring with the press has become counterproductive. At first, it helped him because people saw how stupid and baiting the questions were - but they're tired of the daily spats. It's like overhearing a neighbor's argument with an unreasonable spouse. You might initially side with him but after a while, you just want both of them to shut up.
I try to remember that, between the TDS sufferers and Trump's base, there are millions of people who want the president to do well but are not enamored of him and can find him very tiresome.

Sad but true. You have to prove that they a) KNEW that the item was false, and that b) they published or said the offending material with the INTENTION of causing harm. And you can't just say they had the intention, you have to have something like a signed and notarized document in which the accused says "yes I am doing this for the only intention of harming the victim."

As someone who took the nearly 20 yesr track from student visa to citizenship, I don't find this proposal to be unreasonable as a starting point for discussion.

Yes indeed. This is also the point of things like the H1B visa. We *want* the best in the word to come here. We do not want spies.
I would be in favor of terminating all student visas and immigration from China and most of the Muslim world. None at all. These are enemies of the United States.
For non-enemy states, it needs to be hard enough to reduce the probability that someone is willing to take the risk to spy, but not so hard that no one does it. Mandating a citizenship track would go a long way - it would demonstrate that the candidate is serious about this exercise and isn't just drifting through to send money and knowledge back home.

I'd even go so far as to recommend certain tax credits for companies moving production back to the US. But only if the company kept production in the US for 10, 15, 20 years (pick one). Otherwise they must be repaid with interest plus a significant penalty.

Take for example Johnson and Johnson. They are an American company. But such an incentive could easily mean they leave China (good) in favor of Mexico or Thailand (less good).

Unfortunately, a big chunk of production in China is going to be moved to other nations overseas. The labor costs vs US labor is just too attractive to the bottom line.
On the bright side (sort of), a lot of those nations hate China's guts for a lot of historical and cultural reasons. Funny thing, Vietnam almost certainly hates the ChiComs, while they only mildly dislike the US anymore, despite the unpleasantness of the late 60s-early 70s.

The H-1B system is entirely corrupt. This is one possible fix. Another is a relative measure. If you're using the H-1B system properly, you're bringing in people who are damn good. Damn good people get paid.
Whatever you're bringing in, tie the pay to the rest of your organization. Say the median salary you pay to an "Engineer III" is $125,000. An H-1B must earn at least 25% more. He's worth it, if you're using the system correctly. Your H-1B "Engineer III" better be earning at least $156,250 or you're prosecuted for violating the rules. And you're not going to pay that kind of coin to someone who is *not* worth it.

Ford laid out a story with no specific location, and no specific time, and even said she had "repressed" the memory for years. With no specific time or place, it was *impossible* for it to be investigated in any way, or to be refuted. There was never a single piece of corroborating evidence, how could there be? No one could know when it happened. So it was by definition impossible to disprove anything she said. Therefore, no libel charges possible, as long as she said she believed it. (sadly, the George Costanza defense is a real thing)
In regular court cases, any story that is so transparently ridiculous is automatically tossed out. It is nothing more than a sad, bad, joke. But this is what the entire Democrat Party grabbed onto.

There are things that can be done on that front, but one piece at a time. Destroying China - even if it happens without industrial repatriation - is a good outcome. With industrial repatriation is a better outcome. That will take some time and it is a harder problem to solve. We should try to solve it, but increasing pressure on China and causing industries to leave there is still a net benefit.
