I think a lot of these media types have been funded via back-door sleight-of-hand, like that Warren-headed consumer credit bureau that was answerable to no one, and also there was some "stabilization" fund operated through the NY fed that was also pretty much unaccountable and transfered $$ all over the world
I think Trump is slowly but surely throttling the funding for the radical left which is why they are frantic to stop it. Posted by: artemis at April 22, 2020 12:14 PM (AwPyG) Posted by: Ripley at April 22, 2020 12:14 PM (MxEKc) 82

You say that as though traffic has no effect on Ad rates, though... If I were to believe you, ads during the Superbowl would be no more expensive than ads during a well timed WNBA game. Posted by: garrett at April 22, 2020 12:17 PM (+cYfr) There is a relative competition, and everyone is posting "great ratings" right now. You can steal market share from your competitor but there's only so much market share(money allocated to be spent on ads) in at a given time. Since we're seeing this effect in regular news networks as well it's reasonable to assume that marketing budgets are being cut. Posted by: Someguy at April 22, 2020 12:19 PM (Zm+LZ) 126

Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at April 22, 2020 12:16 PM (KZzsI) People hate online ads because of how intrusive they are. Early 2000 hired by "digital ad agency". Expecting growth, burned thru (saudi?) investor $$$ renting a huge office space in Old Town Pasadena right on main drag, catering lunches. Before the end less than a year later were bringing in mcdonalds. And turned out fuckers never DID pay my medical as advertised!
Yeah I don't really understand what the people running those things were thinking. Even if they had been successful they couldn't possibly run those kind of expenses and survive. I had a somewhat similar, much lesser experience with an online site. Around 2006 a batch of conservative investors set up a website and I was hired on to write for them. It was great for a month, then apparently they weren't making money they expected and bailed on the whole thing leaving me and many others unpaid for work. The concept of taking a loss for a while to build up business was evidently alien to them. Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at April 22, 2020 12:24 PM (KZzsI) 180

If I was artistic -
I had a vision this morning of a Saloon in the old west. Guy with no mask walks through the swinging doors and stops to survey the bar. Everyone has their bandanas up over their faces like bank robbers. There's a line of tough looking multi-ethnic yahoo types leaning on the bar, all with masks. The bartender is back to the viewer, but when he turns, he has a mask too. Everyone gives the guy the hairy eyeball, including the cowboys playing poker, one of whom starts to slowly reach for his holstered pistol. Even the top hat wearing town drunk slumped in the corner has a bandana over his face. Just as the guy is about to walk further into the bar the saloon door swings open behind him and the sheriff and a deputy walk in, wearing masks. And the Sheriff says "I heard there was a troublemaker come to town. We don't take kindly to no-good lawbreaking hoodlums in these parts mister, you mind if I ask you why you ain't wearing a mask?" I agree, its a matter of what kind of story you want and what setting. Definitely in times past people were slower and more complete in their dialog than these days. Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at April 22, 2020 01:16 PM (KZzsI) 559
BertG - yes, or a similar device being marketed to civilian market for ship security (think - Somali pirates). Amazing.
My first question was: hmmm, how might this be utilized as a non-lethal/non-destructive weapon in other military situations? Many military/ex-military/security people there, everyone had same thought. Application for ship stand-off non-lethal security was obviously perfect, but other ideas came to mind. Posted by: rhomboid at April 22, 2020 01:17 PM We were impressed with the audio clarity at long range. The thoughts went from "how can this be utilized in ground operations as a weapon" to "hey, this thing would be great for use on the range firing lines and for talking/giving instructions to guys as they parachute into the DZ". Once experienced a demo of the sound-wave "weapon" the Navy and others now have to deal with small boats. Wow. Not sure if using hearing protection would change things, but normal activities would not be possible when that beam is trained on your location. Posted by: rhomboid at April 22, 2020 01:10 PM (El6T/) So the mohammedans are deaf when they slam their Semtex-laden motorboat into the $2B per copy Arleigh Burke-class destroyer. Shooting their knock-off Boston Whalers with 25mm HE rounds and leaving the survivors to fend off the sharks would tend to discourage misbehavior rather more efficiently. The people are going to be pretty pissed when they find out that the real death rate is about .2%.

I just donated Grammie. This is my first visit to comments today so I'm not sure what is going on. Not sure I want to know.

I would be pretty furious if I'd done all the work and studied hard, and definitely would NOT be doing so next semester Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at April 22, 2020 01:33 PM (KZzsI) Posted by: Grump928(C) at April 22, 2020 01:49 PM (yQpMk) 571
Yes. The second half is a chase on foot through the jungle where the main character ends up killing a bunch of people with frog poison and blows to the head. It's a quality film. Heavily influenced by The Naked Prey.

Poor journalist. They will have to stand in the unemployment lines......right behind the coal miners. I hope the miners get all the good coding jobs and the journalist have to sweep the floors.
