Vice Media to Lay Off 300 Useless Clickbait Robots
Digital media, especially the ludicrously over-funded leftwing digital media, had already been losing jobs for a year. As with actual human victims: Coronavirus usually kills victims that were already in a bad state.

It would be joining Group Nine Media, BuzzFeed, Vox Media, Bustle Digital Group, Cheddar, Maven Media, G/O Media, Protocol and others who have resorted to layoffs and furloughs. ... Flashback: Digital media companies were riding a wave of optimism just a few months ago, with many expecting to finally become profitable in 2020. Now, those plans are pipe dreams. The assess in seats don't generate revenue, the marketing budget being spent does. If companies cut marketing, the pool of ad revenue shrinks. It's not like the people clicking on ads are spending money to do so.

There is a relative competition, and everyone is posting "great ratings" right now. You can steal market share from your competitor but there's only so much market share(money allocated to be spent on ads) in at a given time. Since we're seeing this effect in regular news networks as well it's reasonable to assume that marketing budgets are being cut.

Yeah I don't really understand what the people running those things were thinking. Even if they had been successful they couldn't possibly run those kind of expenses and survive.
I had a somewhat similar, much lesser experience with an online site. Around 2006 a batch of conservative investors set up a website and I was hired on to write for them. It was great for a month, then apparently they weren't making money they expected and bailed on the whole thing leaving me and many others unpaid for work.
The concept of taking a loss for a while to build up business was evidently alien to them.

I have questions about all of this. I know some teachers are teaching, but it's not a full day so why are they getting full pay?
If kids are at home why are they not being fed? I know money may be tight, but bread, jelly, rice and beans can be had for $5 and are filling.

There was a well known author, years ago, that talked about diagramming sentences. He said that when he wrote, and had a sentence that just wouldn't work, he'd go back and diagram it, to see where the problem was.
I want to say it was E. B. White but, I'm not sure.

Around here, the school buses are running a couple of mornings a week delivering boxes of food to the kids on certain bus routes.
As for LAUSD feeding everyone, they probably had a food contract in place that they can't get out of, so instead of tossing the food, they are giving people meals.

Yeah I don't really understand what the people running those things were thinking. Even if they had been successful they couldn't possibly run those kind of expenses and survive.
I had a somewhat similar, much lesser experience with an online site. Around 2006 a batch of conservative investors set up a website and I was hired on to write for them. It was great for a month, then apparently they weren't making money they expected and bailed on the whole thing leaving me and many others unpaid for work.
The concept of taking a loss for a while to build up business was evidently alien to them.

In my experience, most people talk in short, declarative sentences. There are certainly those who ramble, but most people are actually pretty terse in speech.

Yeah, guys like Elmore kind of overdid it, but they're closer to real life conversation than someone like Patrick O'Brian. Robert Parker did a great job with conversation, and so does Loren Estleman. If you can make several pages of conversation interesting and easy to follow, that's skill.

Yes. The second half is a chase on foot through the jungle where the main character ends up killing a bunch of people with frog poison and blows to the head. It's a quality film. Heavily influenced by The Naked Prey.

We were impressed with the audio clarity at long range. The thoughts went from "how can this be utilized in ground operations as a weapon" to "hey, this thing would be great for use on the range firing lines and for talking/giving instructions to guys as they parachute into the DZ".
