We had a cement tornado shelter. It was not part of the house. It was a short distance from the house and was built into a hill. My father had it built because there had been a bad tornado in the area. A nearby farmer told him he was crazy. When my dad sold our small farm, that same farmer ended up renting it. They were in the cement shelter when "The Palm Sunday Tornado" hit west Michigan and destroyed the house on his own farm.

I have a good friend whose business had collapsed, pre-Covad.
He has been hanging on, and talking with a good BK attorney.
BK attorney said if he can hang on a few more weeks before filing, he will have a two year backlog soon, and a lot of stuff stays frozen when it is in limbo like that.
Everyone's situation is different, but once the BK court is filled up, there is nothing but time to get through it.

We had sort of the same thing, an underground bunker accessible through our detached garage, to be used in case of tornadoes (or I guess The Bomb or alien invasions). It was cool in the summer and we kept candy and comic books there. Never had to use it.

During this whole stupid shutdown, I've been doing the right thing and trying to learn programming, so I can have a marketable job skill and improve my lot in life. And it's always been the same story as the previous times, I type out the code EXACTLY like in the tutorial and it doesn't FUCKING work. To the point that I want to put my coffee mug through the fucking monitor. I have a 137 IQ, why can't I fucking get this? If I had spent the last 3 weeks jacking off and playing video games like everyone else, I'd be in the exact same position as I am now, except I'd be happier and less frustrated. Further, all of the jobs require so much experience, that I'd have to spend all of my free time freelancing for several years before I could get an actual job programming. The thought of going back to my menial, low-paying job makes me want to jump off a fucking bridge.

Yeah. We made the drive today. No problem traversing Gunnison County, though they had temporary lighted advisory signs at the county line saying "Non-resident travel is illegal"
No sandbagged, machine-gun manned travel checkpoints. They'll probably just mail me an e-ticket from the license plate camera.
Talked to some SLV locals who seem pretty rational in their approach, and for plumbers, quite conversant about the 'Rona situation. They were mostly peeved with Front Range peeps coming to Alamosa and cleaning out the grocery store shelves like a swarm of locusts.
The Southern route to Cortez (Hwy 160 from Walsenburg) should be relatively sane.

The experience with my son is similar. Our town spent about $40mm to build a beautiful elementary school, and we have about 1,000 students in it. The capacity is about double, but when the town decided to break ground they anticipated a larger student population than they ended up getting now.
The Kid now does distance learning, finishes in about 45m as well, and reads what he wants to (Star Wars and JRR Tolkien) for the rest of the day. If he's spending 6+ hours at school, I'm really not sure that it's more than expensive sitting. Teachers are really nice, and the administration is top-notch, but what is the money going to, at the end of the day?

Do you own property in Gunnison? The county passed a public health ordinance prohibiting people whose primary residence is outside Gunnison county from occupying their secondary home within Gunnison county. They have also restricted organized outdoor recreation such as guided river rafting trips and such. Restrictions on motels and RV parks as well.
I spoke with the county health dept and specifically asked about traversing the county to get to another loacle and they said "No problem!"
But I think Gunny is the only county I know of with such a restrictive policy.
Probably pays to check county by county public health sites.
I saw a couple of mountain counties have declared they are "past the peak" and beginning to reopen some stuff (maybe Eagle County?)

Emotional 5 year old is good. He's starting to settle down and think about stuff now. Unfortunately for me he's very smart. He's with with his mom in Oregon, but she's bringing him down to visit sometime in the next few weeks. He thinks I'm his grandfather, which isn't true but it'll work. Someday he'll figure out we're not actually related at all, that'll be fun.

It didn't really bother me except for the lymph nodes. (Remembered when I was little, and Mom always checked my neck whenever I was sick.) Told myself if it lasted until the weekend, I'd go to express care. By Thursday-- no more swelling and felt fine, so didn't seek any treatment.
Disclosure: I am an "at risk" person due to age AND other medical conditions.
If there is ever a freely available antibody test, I will take it. I want to know if I've already had this dreaded bs and survived, despite my other health issues!
Currently, none of my coworkers (that I know of) have complained of C19 symptoms or gotten tested.

They are probably fine at some generic stuff but not precise instruments, collectibles, etc. Go to any garage sale, estate sale, whatever. If it is made in China is is just throw away.

Not furloughed yet. Took a job in Dec. with a large hotel company, so it may yet happen. They've already shut down several "critical" IT projects, and I'm the last guy hired. If the country is back up and heading towards running in a month or two, I'll probably be OK. If not, I'll be hitting the headhunters and job websites hard. I want it to be my decision, even if it's a bad one.

I like Trader Joe's black pepper grinders because, unlike the McCormick ones, you can use all of the pepper in the jar. The McCormick ones seem to stop working when there is still some peppercorns at the bottom. It's irritating - like when the Soft Soap pump dispenser doesn't dispense the soap at the bottom, so you end up unscrewing the thing and shaking the soap into your hand.

I highly recommend HOLAR. They are made in Taiwan so maybe hard to find in states. I have bought so many crappy mills over the years and this one is by far the best. nice find grind so I use it at the table but consistent and sturdy.
For cooking I use one of those cheap wooden box coffee mills for volume.

At that price, I'd get a Hario brand manual coffee grinder and use it for spices. It's a ceramic burr grinder; about $35 and it's the only coffee grinder I've used for about six years. No reason it wouldn't work for peppercorns.
Unless you specifically want one that's US-made. The Hario is Japanese, but the people who make it have Very Strong Feelings about making coffee grinders properly.

they mentioned Greek ceramics on their home page but did not say where the grinder's were made. The seller on Amazon said it was India for that product. I can't say for sure of course but that is what they said. It makes sense. Anyway, you said it was a good product so that is the real tip.

Slowly buy up Lodge or LaCruet brand cast iron, or go hard-core and start going to flea markets for the Griswold or Wagner antiques to replace what you have now.
The same thing with pots and pans. If you can buy decent Revere Ware pans or the cast aluminum pans you will have a pan that will outlast the cheap Chinese stuff.

It does sadden me sometimes, though. There are definitely some people on Our Side who are complete idiots.
The really disturbing thing (to me) is how the fringes on right and left tend to look the same. They distrust "corporations" and the CIA and Trump and tend to "just ask questions" about Israel.
In the past the main distinction was that right fringe people were basically patriotic, but that seems to have dwindled over the past 20 years. Even religion is no longer a dependable distinction -- I'm seeing a lot more atheists and neopagans among the "new Right" crowd.
It does make me wonder, though: if you don't like America and capitalism and don't believe in God and want legal weed and blame Christians for the Dark Ages and Jews for 9/11 . . . how do you describe yourself as "conservative"?

He gets so desperate, he finally finds some psych meds (don't recall where he gets them from), and make the horrific mistake of ASKING DEBRA TO TAKE THEM, which sets her off even worse.
It's an episode I get the impression just about every married's man can relate to, a lot.

no doubt. The only reason I mentioned Japan last is usually one goes with European knives or Japanese. They blades are different and you use them differently. Surely the Japanese know a bit about blades.
As for smaller pairing knives, I have had really good luck with Cutco from the USA. They say if they ever break or even get dull you can send them to the company to replace it or sharpen it.

Are you kidding me? Doesn't grind fine? I use my spice seed-dedicated coffee grinder all the time and the spices come out powdery like from a jar, just fresher. It does require a little 'cocktail shaker shake', but that's not a big problem.
I keep fewer pre-ground spices now, just garlic, onion, paprika and chili powder to name most of them, mostly for rubs/breading for cutlets. The whole spice seeds/berries last a lot longer and I can buy them in large 14 oz. containers for like $6 or $7 which is much cheaper than the little pre-ground McCormick spice containers.
Once I got my spice grinder, my cooking world opened anew. Depending on what I'm making/using the spices for, sometimes I dry toast the spice seeds first in a small pan, then put them in the spice grinder with the lid off to let them cool before grinding. Pre-toasting certain seeds really changes the flavor profile. I always dry toast cumin seeds when I make my sliced carrots in beef broth, which is a great combination. I hate boring vegetables.

Another great unknown one, also mostly produced in South America, this one in Chile, is carmenere. A mostly forgotten Bordeaux grape that, like malbec in Argentina, seems to have found its home in South America.
But hard to get a good one. A few years ago I had a "single-vineyard" carmenere, it was amazing. But haven't seen one in years.
Hmmm. Maybe I'm going to go open up a bottle of wine.

This was my belief all along, since the ChiComs have this huge concern about HIV that goes back to the first flare up in teh 80's when they couldn't even talk about it.
If you remember, about October last year there was a release of information that some chinese lab had done gene splicing on human cells plasm to create twin girls that were supposedly HIV resistant.
That is not the sort of thing you do when you have some free time on the bench on a slow Thursday and the bars aren't open yet.

I would say it is more like a syrah but very tannic. If it is made right and there is enough fruit there, it can be really good. This is certainly a steak wine or even for game. I like it though as I am not that particular. Like so many of they classic grapes not from Italy, it originated in France.
The AOC is called Madiran in France. I have had a few of those too and they are good. Now that I think of it I think sometimes they Uruguay versions are cut with tamer grapes but I need to check on that. In Madiran they have to be 100 tannat I believe. Either way, try one from Uruguay. If you have a big wine store you can likely find one.

I have no idea how any of this work, but Montagnier certainly would -- he and a colleague analysed the genome of this virus, and that's what he concluded.
This modified coronavirus could have been some sort of transport. They do this all the time, using viruses to transport some genetic material into target cells.
I would reason that maybe the coronvirus here had some desirable property for this purpose, and they were going to try to infect human (or other animal) cells with it, and that would carry some of the HIV material into the cell.
And the result of that would be some step in developing a vaccine for HIV.

i did a quick net search and others described Tannat more like a big Bordeaux. It is not as dusky as Barolo really. I don't want to oversell the strength as it is an enjoyable wine with some hefty food. Sure decant is and let it sit for an hour. But it is a drinkable wine. And I too was surprised when I heard about Uruguay and good wine. To me Latin American only had Chile and Argentina. Now I have to go buy one after all this.

I was just reading. It could be almost exactly that. There is work being done, with some success on modifying a virus to evoke an immune response against some other virus.
To that, you want your "vaccine virus" to be harmless, that is, cause an immune response in the host but cause no series symptoms or disease. The immune response is then good against the bad disease you're targeting.

To test a therapy you have to have something that will infect your test animals, and you can only do so much with tissue cultures. HIV is unique to humans as far as anyone can tell.
Corona viruses, however, can also affect a number of other animals, one of them is hamsters, so if you have a therapy in mind to prevent either transfer of the RNA material through the cell wall, or to interfere with RNA replication in the cell, it helps if you can use a lab animal that can be infected. If you can graft on the relevant part of the HIV virus onto a corona virus, that will give you a wonderful test bed to try your therapy on
A good agent would be very infectious, have a long period of being non or low symptomatic to give the therapy a chance to work, and high mortality rate would not be important.
The fact that it is not a biowarfare agent would explain the poor handling: people tend to think in classes, we don't think of tree stumps and chairs and stools, we think of "things to sit on"
dead infected animals with test virus aren't natural plague items, they are "nasty things to dispose of before they smell"
it would also explain the non-reaction by the PRC apparatchiks and the following psychotic reaction when they realize they have just released highly infectious AIDS that spreads by aerosol droplets

I don't know that seems like one of those things that would be too good to be true if it worked. You'd have the sunk cost of inventing the product but once you made it and released it into the population it'd basically be free the world over.

Carmenere is a nice wine. I used to drink a lot of Chilean wine in the 90s when it was a steal. It doesn't surprise me there is Tannat from Argentina. But it is surely the national grape of Uruguay. I doubt many Americans who drink French wine have ever heard of Madiran really, the original home of Tannat. It is pretty tiny AOC.

Those crude semiconductors were really pretty efficient. When I was playing with my crystal radio, there was not obvious change in headphone volume between any of the tested crystal materials, and a germanium diode. Boiled down to the ease of finding and maintaining a "sensitive spot" on the crystal under test.
The coherer was a one-shot device. They had to invent a "de-coherer" to shake it up again to detect the next radio pulse.

The float may be working smooth; however. attached to the float is a *thing* that moves in a in a sleeve {like a piston} that the float movement raises and lowers.
This thing allows or disallows the flow of gas.
It is usually brass and some have a little synthetic
tip which can look perfectly fine. It make fine but it may be your culprit.

Does the float actually float in gasoline? Brass, cork, or plastic float?
How old is the bike? If it was built before the advent of alcohol-adulterated gasoline, the float was designed to float in a slightly denser liquid than today's fuel provides. All other things being equal, an intact and sound float will float lower in E10 than it does in ethanol-free gasoline. So, if the float level is set correctly for ethanol-free fuel, putting E10 or E15 in the tank will cause the fuel to rise higher in the bowl before the float valve closes.
As a rule of thumb, I make a practice of setting the float level 1/16" lower than the "book" calls for, to compensate for the less-dense fuel.
If the bike has a cork float, gasohol is bad juju. Cork floats were sealed with a coat of shellac, which is very resistant to petroleum solvents, but dissolves readily in alcohol. Seen a lot of cork fuel sender floats destroyed by gasohol.

The thing runs like a scalded cat. Problem is, when you turn on the gas
at the tank stopcock, gas starts running out of the overflow tube under
the bike. "Oh, no problem. Float valve is sticking". So I pulled the
carb, dropped the bowl and checked. Hmm. Seems to work. Even blew
through the gas line as I was doing it. Float down, air goes right
through, as I moved the float to the "full of fuel" position, air cuts
off. Huh. Must have just stuck over the winter and I jiggled it free
tearing it down. Put it all back together (which is a PITA, the
tolerances around the frame are tighter than a frog's butthole). It
started right up....but it was still leaking. I don't know what it could
be, it's not like it's an over complicated system.What else could it
be? Any ideas, anyone?

I hate when that happens. What I always find it to be is the needle isn't actually turning the gas off because it's either worn, or it gets slight cocked during assembly. I'll turn the gas off, run it till it stalls, then tap on the float bowl to try and reorient the needle. Turn the gas back on and see what happens.
Sometimes at that point if it still don't work I'll turn the gas back on, let the bowl fill, then shut the gas off and carefully pull the bowl and look at the actual gas level in the bowl. Some needles have a really tiny spring loaded contact where the float touches it, and that sometimes get stuck in it's compressed position thanks to the shit gas today. If that happens it could throw the float setting off, because now the float has a little farther to travel. yeah thats a mikuni flat side. They make them for harleys, just a lot bigger, and with accelerator pumps, but its the same deal. You'll have to bend the float tab towards the carb body to lower the fuel level.

Brazil, a while ago. A long time there, several situations where Argentines and Chileans were present (in Brazil), they had real trouble following things. He never took the float valve out! He took out the idle jet, and messed with the main jet. In that view of the underside of the carb body, the float valve is behind that web of bright metal connecting the two floats. To set the float level on that style of carb, turn the carb upside down, and rest it on a bench, or hold it gently in a vise.
Using the gasket surface as a reference, measure the vertical distance from the highest point on each float to the reference plane. It might be above or below the plane. Each float should read the same. Now apply the 1/16" rule of thumb. If your initial measurement showed the floats (in the upside down carb!) to be 3/32" below the gasket flange, bend each leg of the float bracket, using needle-nose pliers, such that the new position is 1/32" below the plane. If the floats were 5/16" above the plane, bend the brackets to make that 3/8".
But before you get into bending float arms, pull the pivot pin, and remove the float assembly. The float valve might come with it, if it has a retainer link. Examine the tip of the valve. It might have have a black rubber (Viton) tip. If the valve is old, it might have been damaged by alcohol, like maybe softened or swollen. Replacement valves should have rubber tips that are alcohol-resistant.
If the valve is all-steel, the tip should be a smooth shiny cone with no ridges or circles. If there is a circular groove worn in the tip, it is worn out. Not only does this mean the float has to rise higher than its designed level to close the valve, it makes the valve into more of an "on/off" device than a gradual change of rate device.
You should be able to get a carb kit or at least a needle and seat from the dealer, or from the after-market. The needle and seat are usually sold as a pair.

Yeah there are 2 different needle and seats on those carbs. You can't see it from the vid which one it is. On one style the seat is unscrewed, it has a hex on it for a socket, and on the other it's pressed in and has an o-ring on the very bottom of the seat as a seal. The O-ring ones can be a bastard to get out because there isn't much to grab. The other bitch is depending on who makes the damn needle. Some needles have 4 of the little blades running along the side, basically a 4 sided needle and others have 3. The 4 sided ones like to jam when traveling in the seat IF...IF the thing was made in hut 43. I would definitely try to get the factory jap made part. The Hut 43 ones almost never work worth a shit. The last one was so bad I just stuck the original needle back in because it was almost perfect. The new one was worthless, it just would not travel smooth in the seat without binding.

I also got a coat of the same enamel on one side of the bifold door to be used on the bedroom closet, and that looks like enough. The doors come with white primer on them already, and the instructions say "all surfaces must be finished or warranty void".

nice catch. That would have been confusing using the standard Horde definition. Like you say, it is a specific region and style, but not a grape. Tannat is a grape, but Madiran is an AOC in France where they make wines from Tannat. Yes the Euros like to confuse us and it adds to the snooty reputation wine has with some.

The brass seats I'm talking about sometimes need a tap run into the center to thread it, and then a machine screw threaded in, and then pulled out with vice grips holding the screw. He thinks the ventilators are actually doing more harm than good, killing many of them in fact. If so, then this is just an irony of ironies. Remember the mad dash to make ventilators?
Well, 80% of NY patients on ventilators die. 20% survival rate piss poor. This doc is saying what many have begun to suspect. WuFlu is not pnuemonia, and acts more like high-altitude sickness or CO poisoning. The patients can breathe fine mechanically, they just can't get enough O2 in their blood when they breathe.
The solution seems to be just pure O2 through a mask, maybe under higher pressure.
Interestingly, this is what they did with BoJo. They were saying, good, BoJo avoided the ventilator. Well, maybe the top flight docs trying to save the Prime Minister's life knew something.

Definitely. I have some that had wide blades that I ground into what looks like little piston ring groove cleaners just for cleaning O ring and snap ring grooves on certain things. Some dude at a flea market years ago was selling whole boxes of various dental pics, like dozens and dozens in a box for next to nothing. I cleaned him out. I still got tons left.

South Korea just posted their COVID daily numbers and they only had 18 new cases. Lowest yet, and even more impressive when you consider 4 of those cases were imported (airport screenings).
I think that South Korea might actually eliminate Chinese Virus entirely from the country. Great for them if it happens, but that puts them a difficult position while the virus continues to burn and churn in the outside world. Do they plan to virtually eliminate travel to and from the country for the next year or more? Because that's what they kind of are doing now. You can still travel to South Korea, but everyone, whether they test positive or not, has to self-quarentining for 2 weeks before moving freely in the country, with a penalty of fines and or jail for violating. Only South Korean nationals returning home are going to be entering under those retrictions.

Even if we had a massive shortage of vents, the ones who'd be denied would be the very oldest and least likely to survive anyways, while younger and hardier patients would be put on ventilators when it may turn out keeping on O2 would increase survival odds, as you describe.

Larsen, in his later years the silent director King Vidor wanted to make a movie about the Taylor case, so did a lot of research and interviews. He never made the movie, but a fellow named Sidney Kirkpatrick used his notes in the book A Cast of Killers. Sadly, the book (and Vidor's notes) is chock-full of errors, but it's a good read for a rainy day.
