Study: 50 to 85 Times as Many People May Have Been Exposed to Coronavirus Than Who Have Tested Positive for It, Indicating That the Chinese Flu is Far Less Deadly Than Models Suggest
Plus: Covid Briefing

Interesting.

This researchers sought volunteers in Santa Clara County, California, to test their blood for antibodies to coronavirus.

Under the three scenarios for test performance characteristics, the population prevalence of COVID-19 in Santa Clara ranged from 2.49% (95CI 1.80-3.17%) to 4.16% (2.58-5.70%).

These prevalence estimates represent a range between 48,000 and 81,000 people infected in Santa Clara County by early April, 50-85-fold more than the number of confirmed cases.

Conclusions

The population prevalence of SARS-CoV-2 antibodies in Santa Clara County implies that the infection is much more widespread than indicated by the number of confirmed cases. Population prevalence estimates can now be used to calibrate epidemic and mortality projections.

Something to keep in mind: They sampled the population for antibodies, like pollsters sample a population for their voting preferences. Sometimes polls are way out of line with reality. Sometimes samples are skewed.

Also: The thread below suggests that the true coronavirus fatality rate is less than that of the common flu.

Justin Hart concludes this by taking the number of fatalities and dividing by the true infection rate of coronavirus. Not the reported rate. The true rate, which includes both those who get tested and who thus are included in medical reports, as well as the many people who never get tested and thus are invisible to the medical reports.

But he's assuming the common flu death rate is found through the same method -- divide fatalities by the True infection rate (Reported + Invisible Non-reporteds which must be estimated by statistical sampling).

But is that true? Or is the influenza fatality rate only fatalities divided by reported cases only?

This is a little mathy, but if the common flu fatality rate is determined not with all cases (reported and estimated nonreported) in the denominator, but instead just the reported cases, that would mean that the flu's fatality rate would also plunge if you started including all the many, many nonreported flu cases in your estimates of how deadly it is.

Personally, I've had what I'm 99% sure was the flu like six times, but I only saw a doctor for it once. I imagine lots of people have the flu but don't bother with a doctor unless it gets really bad or persists for an obnoxiously long time. (As mine did when I finally saw a doctor.)

So, you know, if the flu's deadliness is usually based on reported cases only, if you added in an estimate of nonreported cases, its fatality rate could fall from 0.1 to 0.01 -- meaning, covid would still be ten times as deadly.

I'm not sure about that last bit, about how the common flu fatality rate is calculated.

The daily coronavirus briefing has started:

This study proves that Covid-19 has a .12% mortality rate -- LESS DEADLY THAN THE COMMON FLU. Probably less deadly than the sniffles.

The study (and it was a strict, scientifically conducted mass study) basically proves that Covid-19 swept through California (and probably the whole US) long long before February and March -- probably during the Thanksgiving/Christmas/New Years season of 2019 -- AND NOBODY NOTICED.

58 Flu rates also estimated - have to be. There are actual confirmed case numbers - the evil Dr. Birx, who of course wants AMERICANS TO DIE so Trump is deposed - referred to the well-established ILI network to be used in generating test data for this situation.

Influenza prevalence is in the 10s of millions every year - there are not anywhere close to 10s of millions of influenza antibody test results.

117 Ponder this:

AIDS exploded on the scene around 1980. Wasn't identified as a separate virus (HIV) until 1982, I believe. Scientists at the time concluded it must have started in '79 among "anal sex practitioners" in the gay community.

Many years after all that, someone found an old tissue sample saved from a Wes African cadaver which has been donated to science back in 1959.

Guess what? The 1959 tissue sample tested positive for HIV.

That means that in reality, the HIV virus had first emerged back in the 1950s (if not earlier), but was limited to backwoods populations in West Africa for DECADES, before somehow escaping out to the West and then the whole world. (Presumably some gay First-World guy had sex with an infected African guy in Africa -- something that probably rarely if ever happened before the 1970s.) Only THEN were we off to the races.

We may eventually learn something similar about this Wuhan coronavirus. It may have been endemic in that part of China for YEARS before erupting into what was perceived as an international epidemic.

But could it be that those 85 Americans who test positive for the coronoavirus-19 antibodies didn't catch it in early 2020, or even late 2019, but possibly years and years ago -- unwittingly?

Could what we now call "novel coronavirus 2019" actually be an endemic disease that reached our shores long ago, but nobody realized it?

Look, when it comes to shit like Trayvon Martin and Ballsey Ford, I immediately call bullshit and hoax.

But when it's a virus or health, you are sort of forced to reserve judgement. The Left knew this and so that is what handcuffed Trump and all of us. Until the numbers started really coming in and it didn't add up. The icing on the cake was the CDC and DeBolshevik adding thousands of people to the list of deaths to juice the numbers.

Right now, all this thing is is just a very nasty virus that will kill people. But not enough to destroy the 331 million lives on purpose.

175 We need a lot more antibody testing, to get this truer picture. CA has been an outlier in the stats for confirmed cases per capita, especially considering their being the number 1 Chinese US destination prior to the travel ban.

It sure would be nice to also know if there are two major strains, one being far deadlier, as a few reports have claimed.

Why this hasn't studied by Top Men here, I ain't sure at all. A good reporter might ask Trump about that; we DO have a few.

179 I'm glad that I always held firm to my position that this was an overblown gaslighting, I knew I would ultimately be proven correct once the numbers came in.

The real key to predicting what these serology tests would show was that total deaths from all causes had declined.

You knew as soon as you saw that the total death toll hadn't changed that the rest was just fun with numbers. With 5500 people over 70 dying every day in America, it only took classifying 15-20% of them as boogeyman-virus related to make a really cool, made for television death ticker to mesmerize the masses.

But tards don't understand probability, statistics and mathematics, so they listen to academia. So it was the perfect plan.

Again, is it likely that the vaunted and publicized "bad mismatch" between the actual flu (which many mild Wuhan flu cases may have been misattributed to) and the "experts" best guess for this year's flu vaccine viral cocktail was a function of a heavy load of mild Wuhan "flu" being mischaracterized as actual flu?

My already low confidence in these stumblebum fuckheads is accelerating and auguring in, kiddos.

I'm starting to think that having our two grandkids visit us one day per week each over the past four plus years has more than likely given the immune systems of my wife and I an Olympic level training regimen that we'd otherwise not have had. Minnesota's is even more changed.
The max death date went from April 27 in the future, to back to April 9 now. Total Deaths went from 952 three weeks ago to 442 last week to 650 earlier this week to 195 today.

Except we had 17 people die yesterday for real. The next U of W model should be back to predicting a Chinese Wuhan Virus Catastrophe. I expect the new total will be 1000+ Predicted Minnesota Deaths.

But it is still better than the MN Health Department Model that predicts 9,000 to 42,000 deaths, with 22,00O as the likely number.

And the growing stigma of not wearing a mostly useless mask.

232 Don't forget we've also attributed people falling down the stairs as death by COVID-19. That's skewing the mortality rate. We don't see that with the common flu.

By the way, I think the real difference between COVID-19 is it is much more contagious. But the fact that it's not as deadly somewhat mitigates that factor. Furthermore, symptomatic, for the vulnerable population it is much more severe than the common flu. That means it's more likely to kill that vulnerable population.

By the way, most of the working world in our country is not highly vulnerable.

234 About the flu mortality rate:

The CDC says that they try to estimate the actual number of illnesses by extrapolating from the number of hospitalizations. When they say that last winter there were 35 million cases and 35,000 deaths, that's supposed to include everybody, not just tested/reported cases.

So if the old Chinese Lung AIDS has a 0.1% mortality rate, it's on par with the regular flu.

The first name it had was GRID, Gay Related Immunodeficiency Disease.

Now that Contact Tracing is again a cool and acceptable public health tool, will the local health departments go back to tracing Syphilis, HIV, and all the other STDs again?

There should be more -- people find out that our schools are zombie-factories, that our cops are Red Guards waiting to happen, that agencies like the CDC and the FDA don't do the One Job they're supposedly tasked with, that gun laws get in the way of protecting yourself -- but I think those lessons will be so quickly forgotten or ignored that they don't count.

The study was from California which prior to this was getting 8,000 travelers from China per day. More than likely the west coast was exposed to this virus quite a while ago. As for New York, I believe the current thinking is that those infections primarily came from Europe and/or Iran.

413 Beaches in Duval and St Johns counties in FL reopened today, I think DeSantis lifted the mandatory closings and is leaving it up to each county and city. There are still some restrictions that the openings are for walking and exercise, no beach parties or gatherings

I think the law enforcement agencies were OK with this because they're worried about things getting sporty if there isn't some relief valve soon. The weather is already warm here.

Tampa and Hillsborough County put up a 9pm to 5am curfew earlier this week and rescinded it in less than two days. TPD must have worried about insurrections if they tried to enforce it in the hoods. There was also much mocking of the virus somehow being more deadly in the overnight hours

And that is because the disease does not have an infinite supply of new and unexposed potential victims to prey upon.

Any model which shows unbounded exponential growth is not modeling anything real. There were curves resembling such growth in the Imperial College paper that had the 2,000,000 deaths here and 500,000 deaths in UK which exhibited that behavior.

No scientist who possessed even an inkling of the math and the scientific method would have let that bowser out of his computer, much less puked it all over the world.

What this really means if true is that the virus is way more contagious, but much less deadly than it might have been.

Otherwise you wouldn't see areas with outbreaks at 3x total mortality. (900/day dying in NYC vs. 300/day last March.)

This still puts us around 200k US dead, but may mean we get there no matter what we do.

Thought experiment:

Let's say you absolutely hate American Indians. You despise them.

You want them to vanish from popular culture. Damnatio memoriae, as it were.

What would you do?

Well, you could systematically insist that every single sports team or reference to them be obliterated. From now on, not a single team, mascot or symbol would feature them.

You'd also demand that their image be banished from every commercial brand.

It should be as if they never were.

That bit about 1984 is just mind-boggling.

I did work in and around DHHS in the early 1990s, and there were at least three fossils who had entered federal service in the 1950s. I knew of two men who were named "Shirley" because they were born when it was still a masculine name.

The director of one of the offices I supported was in the first group of volunteers for the Peace Corps as an MD while JFK was POTUS.

575 Col Birx is in a tough spot. She's a scientist. She doesn't hide that. She tries to speak factually, but in that field it doesn't always translate well into practicalities. But that's not her job. It's the presidents and hers is to provide him with a professional perspective. CiNC turns that into material realities based on all the other opinions he gets. If you've ever been in a CoC or part of command, this is pretty typical. What Col Birx said may be unpopular but its material to the issue. It's not always an enviable position to be in.

636 "We wont get to those numbers. The numbers are juiced to begin with and I just dont see people dropping like flies."

We have them. All cause mortality for NYC is available, as well for parts of Italy and Spain. It's generally something like 3 times the normal all cause mortality in areas with serious outbreaks. It would be a huge coincidence if something other than covid was causing that.

It could be that this is just incredibly contagious and medium deadly, and everyone gets it at once.

Less hopefully, there are also towns in Italy that lost 2.5% of their population in March, so it may be too early to say whether testing this one county really means that much.

Also, officially, this has already killed 11k in NYC, which is 0.13% of its total pop.

NYC is at 900 total deaths/day (all cause, not just covid) right now while it is normally 300/day in the spring.
Misreporting could be moving that a bit but I have a hard time attributing < 600 deaths a day to covid there, no matter how much fudging is going on.

They knew it was a weapon.

But only tested it on Chinese.

And it only worked on

Chinese.

Yeah. I think.
The point was it was part of her prepared presentation and she couldn't remember the names and positions of three states.

653 358 You mean Nancy Pelosi and the Democrats delaying
those PPP payments for a week? And now holding small business hostage
because she and her tools won't fund an extention of the sba funding?

On your knees, Soros tool.

It's people like you who try to make everyone think they have to choose between taking an elephant dick or a donkey dick. I'm glad you've made peace with taking your preferred dick, but I like to think there's a no-dick option.

If it's 10 times worse than the common flu that's a good enough reason to close up the US. Forever.

657 Don't get hung up on the comparison to the common flu, though - just look at the raw fatality rate and what that means in terms of lives saved etc. The cost per life is already astronomical under the much larger fatality rate being assumed right now - like, massively unsustainably high - so that would now go straight past ridiculous to ludicrous speed self destruction. This is a new level Darwin Award contest, full-on species self elimination.

658 I don't know about you guys, but I'm tired of sheltering under my desk. I like not having to comute an hour each way to work, but my guys are working in Georgia and Louisiana. I ain't good at telling people to suck it up and deal with the new reality while I'm hiding at home. Next week I'm doing a"thanks guys, I'm not scared either!" tour. And I ain't scared, either.

661 If you wanted to make a Democrat's head explode, should you say "COVID19 is far less deadly than we thought! Isn't that great news?" or should you say "Let's get the economy back on track before November!" ? Just asking for a friend.

662 Quick question for you:

With the tribe running the Media, WHERE do you imagine that you are going to get the "true infection rate???"
