39 The painting shows the talent and creativity of La Thangue with the detail and inserting all the paintings in the background.

What I'm not sure about is if the artist is making fun of the 'expert'. Nobody else is concerned with the work he is inspecting so seriously. The folks in the back are relaxed, enjoying a snack, and I think the guy in the back is playing a harmonica. The severity of the outfit on the expert, dark and somber, seems to emphasize that he doesn't take pleasure in anything in his quest to find the perfect.

Posted by: JTB at April 23, 2020 09:41 AM (7EjX1)

40 He's got quite a collection of paintings, the breakfast room looks like a museum! Not thrilled with the scowly people, but the overall piece is nice. The prospective buyer does not seem enthusiastic, and the women look like they are awaiting his "verdict" and hoping they don't have to cover the rest of the wall with his acquisitions. They'd rather have a little less gold frame and a brighter room. Don't blame them.

The man in black and the woman on the left are either looking at the piece or they're looking at him looking at the piece.

I think one of them is the artist or the gallery owner trying to figure out if he's going to buy it.

47 Guy in the front is snorting cocaine, guy in back is smoking opium. Later that night they got together and invented speedballs, shared it with the artist who died immediately, starting an american tradition among the young and newly wealthy and famous who couldn't handle it.

222 I'm determined to be in a good mood today.
I will go for a walk during lunch (if I get one). I will not let the empty streets and the plethora of bums and homeless people affect me.
I will breathe clean, fresh air and thank God for my freedom, diminished as it is at this moment.
I will marvel at the generosity of this group of people who rallied behind a minister and his wife to save them and their church.
I will look forward to the day when I can feel the wall of tyranny crumble and my rights restored. It will happen. We will be free again.

307 Mornin', all,
Just got back from taking the older cat to the vet. He's 12.5 years old and has been having, er, "digestive" issues for a while. His vet has ruled out any kind of tumor and thinks it's an allergy to certain kinds of food. I've tried a lot of things from chicken (OK) to salmon (disastrous) to rabbit (he loves it, but no real improvement). Now he's going on an expensive "hydrolyzed" cat food. He's very hungry, eats enthusiastically, but has lost weight -- but his doctor does not think it's a thyroid problem, as she says cats with that issue run around all night yelling and driving their humans nuts, and mine doesn't do that. (He drives me crazy in other, irrelevant ways.)
As for today's painting, the light is very interesting, as if there is a skylight above them.

No one thinks the virus is fake news.

Speaking for myself, I thought it was a serious situation, but also think the media irresponsibly fanned the flames of panic and, in the end, the mortality rate wouldn't justify destroying economic well-being of millions of Americans.

Instead of a measured approach, government took the blunt instrument approach and we're seeing the end result of what happens when you allow panic to rule and then place power and trust in the hands of people like Pelosi, Cuomo and Newsom. People are not to be trusted with such power and trust.

That's the problem.

What should have happened was everyone gets their info and makes their own risk/reward decisions - resulting in a full continuum of behaviors and outcomes ranging from smart to stupid and lucky to sucky. What did happen is that all got taken out of everyone's individual hands, by the very top of a bureaucracy with it's own agenda.

We didn't even see fifty states act independently here. We saw blocks of states act in coordination with common political goals.

And an attack on one's person doesn't have to be by specific name. Calls to curtail one's livelihood or other freedoms - even made in the general sense - are still extremely personal.

I think it's okay to call out concern trolls for trolling, though, especially if they aim for the dead thread to make their points. Which is a really weird way to do it, but it might be the same technique where the folks post stormfront crap in hopes of pointing to the comment and saying SEE!!! RACISM!!!

Who knows the motivation, but I wouldn't be surprised if there are groups hoping to have pro-quarantive conservative representation to point to, too.

434 Friend of mine is in Lake Placid, NY, the go-to destination village in the high peaks area of the northern Adirondacks.

He builds new homes and does remodeling. He and his partner have a 22-unit motel right in the walk-to-everything part of town, and also one of the bigger, and very popular, restaurants with a big bar business. They also own properties that they rent via AirBNB.

Lake Placid's big annual summertime tourism events are all cancelled. Two back-to-back horse shows that traditionally open the season are cancelled, as is the huge Ironman triathlon event. The town relies heavily on two weeks of adult sports events, lacrosse and rugby, and those are cancelled.

Anticipating that Cuomo will mandate half-or-less capacity for restaurant openings, many of the restaurants will not open and will likely fold. Same for the hotels, which are all locally owned.

The state operates the venues that all memorialize the olympics the village hosted long ago, under the umbrella operation (state employees all) called the Olympic Regional Development Authority (ORDA). The biggest piece of that is the set of ice arenas with five rinks inside a complex the state has spent huge amounts of $$ to upgrade and enlarge. Ice events include competitive synchro skating and hockey for CanAm youth teams, all of which is not gonna happen looking forward.

So the town will die, because it relies totally on tourism and events.

The village is in Essex county, total county population about 32,000. I don't have the Wuhan numbers for the county, but they are likely low. New York City is a 5-1/2 hour drive, Montreal is about 2 hours.
