85 I absolutely love this painting. It captures the feel of the first softening of winter so well. His use of similar colors between the sky and land marks how subtle this transition can be. The stark areas of dark color in buildings and trees, even the dark spots of the birds, makes the softer uniform scene stand out. To me it also suggests silence or at least quiet, again stressing the subtle time of year and change.

It is a very effective painting. It has the feel of a watercolor but I don't know what medium was used. When it first came on the screen I thought it might be an Andrew Wyeth work, which is high praise.

Thanks, CBD. Great choice.

132 I'm getting mixed moods from this. On one hand, spring thaw implies warming weather, the bleak, dreary, cold, white/gray snow is slowly giving way to lush green life. However, the landscape is bare. A lone copse of trees stands dead center surrounded by almost nothing. They are long thin slashes on a white field. Small houses dot the middle ground, but they blend into the background or are incorporated into the over all form of the trees that they are overlooked. The sky is overcast, but there are hints of hopeful blue. The birds are gathering and nesting, again indicating new life, and the nests are in the exact center of the work, emphasizing importance. I think, overall the artist is TRYING to paint a positive image, but all I can see is the loneliness. It might be my cabin fever that's clouding my view here, but it's been a cold winter here and it will be too cold again to go outside even for a walk for at least another two weeks.

my sources say the Saudis are hardest hit, even though they can pump cheaply. They have domestic demands that are accustomed to the oil money and need more like $40. Russia is in better shape as far as debt to GDP maybe, but they also depend on oil a lot.

US frackers will get bought out by ?? BigOil I guess. They went in debt to build out, and are necessary for maintaining our oil independence, but need probably $55 or so.

We've never had this kind of shut down, but there was some slow down globally, before the pandemic. Now we get to rebuild America in new ways, less globalist, but a debt solution will (hopefully) be a second Trump term issue/resolution.

My wife's cousin's friend knew a guy whose girlfriend said she had read... no, wait...

Milady was telling me about reading that some 300 (?) checkers, nationwide, have died of the Red Death. (Of? or with?)

1. What's the denominator of how many checkers there are, nationwide?
2. Is the distribution different from the general population? from similar occupations?
3. How do we know who among them caught it because of their job?

Statistics: the art of creating nonsense out of smoke.

I do thank every checker, stocker, and fast-food worker I encounter - bunch o' hard-workin' folk out there on the 'front lines' of panic-o-rama.

NE Oklahoma report: a good percentage of folk hereabouts seem to be relaxing and unclenching their sphincters. Fortunately, there is TP.

Spanish lines tend to have operators that are prioritized to Spanish, so that goes to the top of those operators' queues.
Only some of them will be pricks to re-queue you to the English line, and the rest are happy to help anyone who is polite and to the point.

Also, a lot of Spanish monolinguals don't qualify for UE as their SSN are strangely not registered to them or start in "9"

So, yes, if the lines are clogged, "Oprima dos"

I didn't know watercolors as a medium were used back then. Durer's ability with pen and ink isn't surprising giving his etchings and woodcuts but the watercolors are outstanding.

254 my sources say the Saudis are hardest hit, even though they can pump cheaply. They have domestic demands that are accustomed to the oil money and need more like $40. Russia is in better shape as far as debt to GDP maybe, but they also depend on oil a lot.

Actually the Saudi's are pushing all of this, there's a lot of crap on the internet saying how they "suffer" from the low price, but their lifting cost is about $1 per barrel. As opposed to the $35 US Shale Drillers need to stay in business. Russia is hurting now, but it's the Saudi's who are loading up tankers and massively discounting Asian oil sales.

The spot price is down because there is no place to deliver the oil. Not until people start driving and planes start flying.

And even when the economy opens up, it is going to be scaled way back.

I don't expect the spot price to remain at $11 for long, but cheap oil is here for a long time.

Kris, there was a time when I, a straight guy, liked going to malls. They had things guys liked, bookstores, gadget stores like Brookstone, a drugstore so you could pick up the latest magazines or paperback books that interested you, clothing stores that specialized in men's stuff. Now everything is for women and children, bookstores are gone, and the drugstores are all a mile away.

Not to mention that the malls in my area are full of people that I don't feel comfortable around. And the prices are insane.

Miss Linda likes checking every item on every rack, or so it seems, whether it's at Dillard's or the Red-White-and-Blue Thrift Store, so after I look for anything I want or need, I want to go someplace else where I can sit down and have some coffee. The malls still have that, at least.

NASCAR you can link up multiple drivers to run the course and so every driver is involved. Hell multiplayer over internet might allow a full 42 car field of drivers. Baseball you can't really have the entire team playing the game online. Usually you have one maybe two people playing for each team. Same usually goes for basketball and football games.

369 Let me be clear, statistics don't lie. If you look at the Santa Clara covid19 quasi-medical tests, Santa Clara County, California has 565,466 Asians or 32 percent and 626,909 Whites or 35 percent and the rest are Hispanics. The Santa Clara County Covid19 blood tests and online survey tests shows the flu virus may spread by 50 to 85 times more than expected. That is just in San Francisco Bay area. So more Asian people will survive and more White people may die. For proof look at the Santa Clara County California Wikipedia page and go down to demographics. For White clingers education I will note that there are five to eight states that are majority Asian or Hispanic-minority white populated, Hawaii, New Mexico, California, Texas and Nevada, Maryland, Georgia and Florida. If you doubt me to Wikipedia and see Majority Minority, Wikipedia. This means Clingers are dying every day and the big states have more non-whites or Hispanics and Asians. The lesson from California is clear, first take away the Clinger's guns and next their Bibles, add welfare and we will have an Obama Nation. That also proves my point Biden's head should be in a medical jar, I should get a third term and that we need more wheel chair ramp crematoriums. I cannot answer any more questions. Good day.

Now this morning I saw that this thing raised $129 million for freakin' WHO. The money isn't even going to assist Americans, it's going to the UN! So disgusted.

--

It's simply appalling, especially in light of the very real situations millions of Americans find themselves in because of the Chinese Flu.

I can't wrap my head around any fathomable set of circumstances that would make me think I want to give my money to an organization like the WHO. None. But there are countless fools out there that think if Lady Gaga or any other dumb celebrity is part of it, they want to be part of it too. At which point I think, you deserve to lose your money.

Posted by: Lady in Black, sans mask at April 20, 2020 08:42 AM

Amazing isn't it?

Now, think about it... if they can raise $129 million for the WHO, they can sure as shit raise $129 million to support any number of interests for the American people:

--- support for small businesses
--- purchase of supposedly needed medical supplies in local areas hit hardest by virus spread (NYC, Seattle, Michigan, Florida, etc.)
--- support for local charities
--- support for movie theaters all across the country

And on and on. There are any number of ways they could put $129mil to good use here in the USA.

Instead, they flush it down the toilet of corruption and Chinese-controlled WHO.

Fucking ridiculous.

Every single "celebrity" who contributed to that fundraiser should be called out as being propagandists for our Chinese enemy.

The $20 rental tag for a new, shoulda been theatrical, release is actually not a bad price, especially when you compare against the price of actually going to the theater, including concessions.

And yet, people look at me like I'm a nut when I say FCPS will put a bond issue out in November begging for another $250 million to "upgrade needed information infrastructure."

425 sra blaster and I have watched a TON of crap on Netflix and Prime.

A theatrical release, even a bad one (not counting Cats) is light years ahead in production quality and, well, just regular old quality.

If everything is direct to video, it is going to all be crap.

Or very expensive - we did watch a release that went early to video that cost $20. Not something we will do often.
Posted by: blaster at April 20, 2020 10:47 AM (ZfRYq)

I watched "Code 8" on Netflix last week.

I actually liked it quite a bit. It's sort of like a grittier blue collar X-men crossed with a Scorsese movie.

But, yeah, the budget was about 55 cents. Still, they did well with what they had.

The future of movies is going to look a lot like 1970s Japanese movies. Low watt stars, underwritten scripts, minimal craptastic efx.

Yes and...

Our local theaters have cheap Wednesday nights for $7. Which we take advantage of.

The point of paying more for the movie is not so much that we get to see it right now but the experience. Sure, there are people with really good home theaters but still can't compete with the huge screen and 24000 watt Dolby sound systems.

$20 for 2 people is more, then, than what we pay to get the bigger experience.

Kris, we are absolutely being deprived of Holy Communion. It's awful. At
least my church and some others around here are open during the day for
private prayer and the priests are sticking to their usual confession
schedule or in at least one case I know, increasing the hours
dramatically since it's the only sacrament we can receive right now.
Other churches have just closed shop. It's really sad.

We can watch mass on TV or stream it. Throughout most of history Catholics did not receive communion ever week. In fact, unless you're in a state of grace, you should never receive the body and blood of Christ. Temporary separation from the Eucharist, while difficult, is not unknown. Grace can be received through prayer, especially sincere acts of contrition, and while less efficacious by itself is understood by the Holy Spirit to be the best option currently.

I'm very hung up on having physical copies of things I paid for. My kids don't understand it. Now that my media room barely has an internet connection (because of a screwup on the builder's part that didn't do the internet right but they'll fix soon enough), and also contains a 65 inch 4K TV, my embrace of physical media is all the more clear to me.

I was able to watch The Dark Knight Rises, in 4K without any signal lag or buffering, all the way through.

Junior, though, tried to watch How to Train Your Dragon on the TV downstairs, connected to the WIFI, and it kept buffering.

506 Bill Whittle seems pretty convinced the virus was on its way to being a weapon ... and that there are "engineered" pieces to it. And while it was probably released accidentally, the intent to stop travel inn China, but allow/promote travel (of the virus) to the world was an act of war/terror.

I have heard conflicting info if some of that is verified, like if there are certain segments from the AIDS virus or some such ... and whether we can really verify that. My suspicion is our military best minds already know (that it is?), but how we deal with it has to be a measured approach .. maybe. We have to regain the supply chains first ... ?

Posted by: bluebell at April 20, 2020 10:57 AM (/669Q

Right, because it's not really a blessing, it's the unity of the Pascal mystery once and for all. At mass you're present on Calvary, taking part in the sacrifice of Christ. It's one event, we just are able to sorta "rejoin" it. The sick can receive the eucharist from a minister or an extraordinary minister but the Eucharist received was transubstantiated at a mass. There are a ton of handling restrictions for those who can deliver it, all which is like carrying Jesus with you. Does wonders for road rage though.

574 I could never stay awake at the drive in movie and it would make my gf quite angry. Had a nice one in Dutchess county , NY. I saw half of Dick Tracy and half of Flatliners.

575 I went to one once.

Mid-90s. Saw Caspar outside Dickson, Tennessee.

I'm sorry for your youth. Casper don't count.

Need a better or worse movie than the friendly ghost. For the full blown experience it helps so much to have a woman + beer.

576 Any farmers in the crowd?

Is there a different tax rate per gallon on bulk fuel purchases by farms?

577 There are a ton of handling restrictions for those who can deliver it, all which is like carrying Jesus with you. Does wonders for road rage though.

Ha! I brought Eucharist (officially sanctioned and done with a pyx as a transport vessel. Don't anyone think he can just decide to hide a Host in his pocket to take home) to my mom after mass for a month or so as she deteriorated into dementia, and those few blocks of driving were the most difficult I ever had to endure! Having the Lord there is an impediment to modern driving. :-)

Why not unpaid internships?

Diesel for farm use doesn't have road taxes or the red coloring added.

No crawling under the covers and crying for an hour with this guy, a la Tater "Where are the donuts!" Stelter

-------

I read about the yesterday, and I don't believe he actually did that.

I've noticed with Stelter that ALL of his emotions from laughter to indignation to concern, are all terribly overwrought, situationally inappropriate, and seemingly disingenuous.

I think he's a typical media sociopath who has no idea how to relate to his fellow hoo-mons, and he wildly overcompensates in his attempt to generate simulacra of the different emotions people feel.

582 To The James Madison,

Tarkovsky? He directed pictures with ten minute tracking shots through a barren wasteland, ending with a house on fire, right?

585 Gratchi preleteli The Blackbirds Have Arrived. Spring in Russia is depressing, dirty snow refreezes every night, all the dog/cow/horse excreta and dead bodies defrosts and rots.
