9 So using Multiple use grocery bags is bad, and single use bags are good for reducing Rona spread.

Sunlight is good, and artificial interior lighting is bad for reducing the Rona

Interior ventilation may recycle airborne Rona particles, whereas outdoor air will not.

Automobile transportation reduces exposure to Rona, but mass transportation increases risk of infection.

Low density residential living provides separation, reducing likelihood of spreading Rona, yet high density urban living increases exposure.

You know, if they thought rationally for..oh, say five seconds or so,

even the Democrattyist of Democrats would be pretty sick of the whole Obama Show by now.

Obama was a lazy fuck who screwed everything up his lame ass touched, and didn't help anyone but highly connected rich leftists get richer. When he was watching ESPN, he was playing a being the World's Celebrity.

And Big Mike? When she wasn't making kid's school lunches inedible, was flying around the world on the World Longest Girl sDay Out.

27 Mornin', all,

I sit at my dinette table, a Have Gun -- Will Travel episode on the TV, a chubby white-and-black Siberian cat curled next to my MacBook Air, and his adopted brother the black cat sprawled on his couch. Warm and sticky outside with light on-and-off rain.

I'm using the MacBook because it just works, that's all. The new Dell laptop I cured of its wonkiness by installing a wireless mouse and deactivating the useless and unreliable touchpad. Since work paid for that one, I try to use it mostly for work.

My coffee as usual is in the Cafe du Monde cup, which holds about 1/2 cup of fluid at a time, so 6 percolator cups is only like 3 average cups. I might have a few cookies, or some 1/2 price Easter rabbit chocolate.

83 I've been trimming my hair -- which even at slightly past 29 is still thick -- with the old Hair-Wiz gadget from the '60s. I've bought newer blades, and they are not razor-sharp, or maybe my hair is coarser than it was in 1970. But I can at least take some of the thickness out, then shower to get rid of the bits of hair.

The Commander Riker-stye beard gets sheared with a Wahl trimmer. And then I shave every 36-48 hours with one of several vintage safety razors and either soap or cream. The barbershop experience, sort of, without the price tag.

I still want a real haircut.

85 This is such a gloomy day here, and such a gloomy prospekt ahead of us, I thought I'd lighten the day with some Russian thoughts:

And how we burned in the camps later, thinking: What would things have been like if every security operative, when he went out at night to make an arrest, had been uncertain whether he would return alive and had to say goodbye to his family? Or if, during periods of mass arrests, as for example in Leningrad, when they arrested a quarter of the entire city, people had not simply sat there in their lairs, paling with terror at every bang of the downstairs door and at every step on the staircase, but had understood they had nothing left to lose and had boldly set up in the downstairs hall an ambush of half a dozen people with axes, hammers, pokers, or whatever else was at hand? After all, you knew ahead of time that those bluecaps were out at night for no good purpose. And you could be sure ahead of time that you'd be cracking the skull of a cutthroat.

I didn't start drinking coffee on a regujlar basis until I was about 23. 'Struth. I'd miss it now, not least because I know I'd have caffeine-withdrawal headaches.

When I first get up I make a point of drinking a glass of cold water while the coffee brews. It eliminates the dehydration from sleeping 7 hours with no moisture coming in, and I feel better immediately.

118 We both have our jobs and we're all healthy (mostly) and we got a refund (I don't qualify for the $1200 due to apparently being highly wealthy...too bad no one let my bank account know...but my husband does and we have dependents, so it was about $2100). So I feel bad complaining, because it could be MUCH worse.

But homeschooling while working isn't easy, either. My work day is like 16 hours long because I have to fit in my work where I can around the school duties. And at work, we've received no schedule relief on any of our intermediate hardware and software delivery milestones even though our major milestone has slipped almost a year.

Plus, I actually like my coworkers. Most of us are lifers, so I've worked with some of these guys for 10-15 years. I miss them.

And there's a big difference between hanging out in your house because you don't feel like going out, and hanging out in your house because you have to. With the schools closed through the end of the year, even if work reopens, I'll be stuck home until daycare options for 8yos open. (The 3yo is still in daycare.)

I feel like I just want to jump out of my skin.

FWIW, yeast lasts a LONG time. When you find it again buy a few jars. When I lost my barber, I figured out how to cut my own hair. The trick is don't use a mirror when cutting. I sit reading comments here and pull little tufts of hair away from my head and snip them off with a sharp dedicated scissors. Takes maybe a half hour and I'll do a little more the next day if needed.
I fully expected comments about having the worst hair cut in the world. Been doing this for a year and haven't heard a single comment of any type. Maybe it's the hat.

Well, got to shower and hit the grocery store for my weekly outing. Then I need to catch up on all the work I couldn't get done this week. Maybe later I'll shut myself in my bedroom where the kids can't get to me and cry.

155 FWIW, yeast lasts a LONG time. When you find it again buy a few jars. Some morons were talking about it lasting indefinitely in the freezer, and I have personally made decent bread with some that was five years past the expiration date and just kept in a pantry closet. It had been opened, too, probably for five years.

For the inner cities, how about this?

Baltimore, D.C., Detroit, etc, spend over $25K per year total on each kid in school. The success rate of having kids that read and do math at grade level in these areas is less than 10%.

How about bulldozing all the schools in these cities and just give $25K per school aged child to the parent? The could home school and keep the money or spend all or a portion of the cash with a private educator. The only restriction is that the kid needs to pass a test each year.

If they fail (along with a retest), the money goes to a state-appointed education supervisor who finds an appropriate private educator for the kid.

Should the parent choose to home school, they keep the money as income. So, a former welfare mother with 4 kids would have an income of $100,000. She would then be obligated to pay taxes and be a productive member of society.

In this example, taxpayers are not spending one dime more than they currently are. The kid is getting an education (otherwise the money is cut off) and whatever the mother used to receive in rent assistance, food stamps and other welfare is gone.

Everyone wins.

He's out doors and on the water in the crabbing season and is tough as nails. But he's got both age (over 70) and stents as flags, and he's worried bout coming down with the Red Death.
He asked his doctor about the availability of HCQ just in case and the doctor was muttering about clinical trials and placebos. That a "doctor" would even present this as a possibility is criminal in my opinion.

So many fabulous restaurants are shuttered (a few are doing take out orders), the hotels are empty...nothing going on at all. It's sad and scary.

How about bulldozing all the schools in these cities and just give $25K per school aged child to the parent?

I like it, and especially the part where Trayvonia is suddenly making $100k and paying taxes. I don't care about the testing, though. Heck, just give them the $25k and call it a day. You can't change the culture, so we might as well save the money.

232 How about bulldozing all the schools in these cities and just give $25K per school aged child to the parent? The could home school and keep the money or spend all or a portion of the cash with a private educator. The only restriction is that the kid needs to pass a test each year.

250 With the ginormous debt apparently being monetized, AND the markets being bought with QE money (which supports the richest) ... just ending the IRS and income tax would help the working stiff a lot.

At least end the whole torture/headache for those making under $70K or some such. I like everyone to have some "skin in the game". but they have been skinning the worker class for decades. Lower/middle workers support the FreeStuff Class -- And the elite class that wants their servant class to get their health care provided by Government (the working class funds it).

Then the illegal alien class and black market class are tax free PLUS get the free health care ... the "MS-13 friends of Pelosi" being the most egregious cost on society, but also the H1-Bs that bring their extended family to live on the fringes (next to VD Hanson's place, where they live carefree and immune from normal law).

The elites of WallSt sold us (especially manufacturing) out to China, but also sold out the worker domestically. So now we have the chance to remake society in the next four years ... outcome uncertain.

That only happens for 1 year. After that, if the kid doesn't pass the test, a state appointed adviser takes over and buys the kid an education with a private provider.

I tend to believe the welfare mother is going to like the money so much that she'll use a portion to put the kid into a new, private neighborhood class and then make sure the kid is at the dining room table each night studying. If the kid tries to get up from the table, I expect the mother to smack the kid upside his head.

269 Spacex/NASA Crew Dragon launch scheduled for May 27.

We should declare that day America Rising Day or something suitably uplifting, patriotic, and middle-fingering to the panic merchants, eeyores, and Concerned Conservatives.

Durham and the DOJ announcing (more) conspiracy to sedition indictments that day (including sitting House and Senate members, possibly of both parties) would be a very nice touch, as would announcing that China's Most Favored Nation status is revoked, Chinese nationals in the US have their visas immediately revoked and are to be deported, and effective immediately a 100% tariff is on anything coming from China.

Announce that any Chinese, Russian or Iranian ship, boat, or aircraft which approaches within 100 meters (to be polite to the globalists) of an American warship or warplane (without the positive approval of the American) will be considered hostile and the ROE for U.S. forces will be "take any action deemed necessary by the commander on the scene to protect U.S. or allied assets, up to and including deadly force."

Any federal, state, or local official who in any way has taken any action to abridge any Bill Of Rights guarantee of any U.S. citizen gets arrested by U.S. Marshals for violation of civil rights under color of law.

Any other wet-dream things that should happen on May 27th?

It's turned out the ventilators may actually do more harm than good. 80% of the NY patients put on ventilators die. 20% ventilator survival rate.

An NYC doctor wrote an article about this, and he's one of many who are recognizing that with this WuFlu thing, it's not the same. He says that critical WuFlu patients are more like those with high-altitude sickness or CO poisoning. Their lungs can breathe well enough, it's just they can't get enough O2 into their blood.

He says the best treatment seems to be pure O2 through masks, maybe higher pressure, but not a ventilator -- that does nothing but damage their lungs.

So, irony of irony, the mad scramble for ventilators was simply the wrong thing to do.

The liberals took the responsibility away from them decades ago. Kids can't read? That's the fault of the school.

With my plan, the responsibility goes back on the parent with the incentive of a lot of money. The independent educators who go into the inner city to open classes for the kids in exchange for money will call the shots. If a kid wants to act up, the educator just kicks them out. Want to get back in to pass the test? The mother needs to sit next to the kid in class and smack him every time he mouths off.

It will take a while to sort itself out, and it won't work for every kid. However, I believe that we can raise the success rate from 10% to 90% using this method.

A trick: Open one packet and put it in a pill bottle or something similar, so you can keep it in the freezer.

The day before you want to bake, take a pinch and add it to a one quart container (like yogurt or somesuch) and one cup of water and one cup of flour, and stir and let sit somewhere for 12-24 hours so it can foam up.

add all the other ingredients to that for baking. It is like using a sourdough starter, but a little better controlled for the yeast strain. This lets you get 4 or 5 bakings out of a single envelope

This is pretty much what I do even when I buy the big vacuum packed blocks of yeast.

Clyde Shelton and Vendette and others, have appreciated your thoughts on us intros being forced to be alone. I am in two choirs at my church which is of course shut down (bishop, not governor) and that was my social interaction three times a week. Will be really grateful to have that back again.

Posted by: skywch at April 18, 2020 09:40 AM

My mom has no problem staying at home for long periods and even she's getting agitated. My dad is an extrovert extraordinaire and he does all the shopping now just so he can have his social hour.

Posted by: Vendette at April 18, 2020 09:52 AM

Someone posted something yesterday that while they are usually introverted, he found himself starting up conversations with people while he was out, just to feel more normal.

I have found myself actually talking to people more when I am out too, whereas before I would just say the bare minimum to people.

Found myself waiting outside the pizza place last week as they closed their lobby and had only curbside pickup. There was an older gentleman who was already out there waiting.

We shared some small talk for a bit while we both waited for them to bring our pizza out.

After he got his pizza and drove away, he waved to me and I waved back.

I think a lot of us, even introverts, are just desperate for any kind of in-person human contact now.

303 I tend to believe the welfare mother is going to like the money so much that she'll use a portion to put the kid into a new, private neighborhood class and then make sure the kid is at the dining room table each night studying. If the kid tries to get up from the table, I expect the mother to smack the kid upside his head.

The presupposes both rationality and a long time preference for the mother -- that she can visualize what will happen if she fails to do the things required. Neither of those qualities is much in evidence among the welfare class. And most of them, when hit with the cutoff because they didn't school their kids, will scream "Racism!"

And they'll get away with it.

And, as I posted on the ONT last night, Nobel Laureate Dr. Luc Montagnier, who won the 2008 Nobel Prize in Medicine for the discovery of the HIV virus, says the WuFlu virus is indeed a genetically engineered lab creation.

He and some of his colleagues analyzed the genome, and he says it's obvious that HIV gene sequences have been spliced into this coronavirus.

His informed speculation is the Chicoms were playing around trying to create and HIV vaccine. They were messing with this coronavirus for some reason, likely trying to get it to infect human cells, carry some HIV genes, which would lead to to something that might give an HIV vaccine.

They Chicoms then accidentally leaked this tweaked Franken-virus, infected lab personnel, who go onto to spread it.

331 Dems need Biden to make it to the day after the last day to print ballots. Then when he becomes medically unable to continue, the Dems sue to have the ballots fixed (they don't even know who their candidate is yet) or the election postponed. When fixing the ballots cannot be done immediately, the Dems sue and the Supreme Court (5-4) continues the election ("it's a tax; it's a tax on credulity, but it's still a tax"). Then the Dems accuse Trump of trying to become a dictator.

A lot of this plan is premised on a theory of mine...

I believe that the ability to teach is a god-given talent, much like the ability to sing, instead of something that can be learned like being an electrician.

Some people just have the ability to connect with kids and transfer knowledge. They see when the kid is understanding and when they aren't. I know I don't have this talent, but I recognize it when I see it in others. Just like singing, you can get a Ph.D. in music and take singing lessons for a lifetime, but if you don't have the talent, you will always suck.

That's the problem with our public school system. The teacher's union has based everything on certifications, degrees and other measurements that have nothing to do with actual teaching. You can have a teacher in a classroom that is well credentialed, but who couldn't teach a kid anything to save her life.

In my plan, mother hire teachers to get results. If the teacher doesn't produce results, they're fired. Naturally gifted educators will prosper and people who had no business in teaching will starve.

As it should be.

366 Found at yesterday the plan is to try to get back to work around the first full week of May.

Realized last night, I had kind of wasted four weeks(? hard to tell) of vacation on just cleaning the apartment and trying not to go out of my head with boredom.

So, pulled the rowing machine out of the corner. Oiled up the chain and (after Ajax of course wanted to go out at right that minute in the rain) started rowing.

Couple observations.

One: Four weeks of relative sedentary lifestyle really kills your wind.

Two: Rowing is an odd exercise activity. Your heart rate goes up quickly, but it is not like most cardio where it feels like you are putting in a lot of effort.

I can't decide about the R0 myself, it seems it could be a lot lower than we thought. And NY and NJ et al could be from their over-crowding. I don't think the serology results from Santa Clara contradict this.

A lower R0 means a lower threshold for herd immunity. But it isn't clear to me where the background of exposed ppl is at.

Jay Glazer had a great comment a week or so ago in his weekly column about how intelligent one needs to be in order to make it in the NFL:

Your other question, the biggest surprise that the average fan may not know about, is how incredibly smart you have to be to play in the NFL. There are plays that sound like foreign languages, freaking 50-syllable plays. All of a sudden, they get to the line, the quarterback yells out one word and it changes to a completely different play with 50 different syllables.

Then, on top of that, sometimes moments before the ball is snapped, they all have a "sight adjustment."
That means they don't even say anything but all 11 guys on the team recognize something that the defense is doing and they alter the play again on sight. They have to all be on the same page with that. The level of intelligence needed to excel in the league is immense.

Imagine in high school, every single week, they give you a huge new book and you have to have it completely memorized in three days. Every week you get a new one and it has to be memorized inside and out. Yeah, you have to have a totally different level of intelligence to play in the NFL. It's really hard to grasp. I hope I've done a good job explaining it.

492 An NYC doctor wrote an article about this, and he's one of many who are recognizing that with this WuFlu thing, it's not the same.

Posted by: publius, Rascally Rapscallion of a Poperin Pear at April 18, 2020 10:36 AM (f1Vqw)

This. We have seen reports that the WuFlu is not really a lung disease, but a blood disease. The virus gets into red blood cells, and screws up the hemoglobin to prevent uptake of oxygen. So the lungs wind up getting clogged with junk hemoglobin.

And this explains why the HCQ cocktail works. It prevents the bug from colonizing the red blood cells.

Presumably a whole-body blood transfusion would help late-stage victims who are dying on ventilators?

496 I recently started what I like to call a "meat subscription" with an organic farming co-op I stumbled across online. I figured having a few pounds of good meat in my freezer at all times would encourage me to cook more often. I was set up to get a ten-pound shipment every three months; my first shipment arrived in February, and it's good stuff! The one thing I haven't liked is the bacon; it's thick and has good flavor, but it's pretty much all fat. But the packages are easy to customize, so I decided to spend an extra $8 and swap out the bacon for a couple of pork steaks on future shipments.

My next shipment was scheduled to arrive in late May, but I heard about Smithfield Foods shutting down its main plant because a bunch of their workers got the To Wong Flu, and I thought, ugh... there could be some shortages coming. So, I decided to up-size my subscription to the biggest package (thirty pounds) and bump up my schedule to every two months starting with the earliest possible date (this coming week).

I'll most likely reduce the size and frequency back to their original levels later, but I thought it'd be a good idea to have a nice big stockpile of good meat for now, just in case.

Is he really a good NFL quarterback though? Or does he rely on his skill and speed to make plays out of nothing when his first read is not there?

How difficult of an offense is he really running? BAL is a run-first offense where they do well when playing from ahead and can dictate the game flow.

But if they fall behind and Jackson is forced to actually try to bring the team back and not rely on the run game, he's not as good.

So time will tell with Jackson. If he is forced to be a true pocket passer, he may be exposed.

503 The Chinese are ruthless, diabolical and plotting. You can thank a lot of people in our country for trying to foster a different opinion. That includes both people who have taken the cash and people in Congress. Nobody paying attention should be surprised. Theo goal is simple: world conquest. That may sound like a trite novel or movie plot, but it isn't. It's the material and verifiable truth. Read about their utter and complete disregard for human life. Of their genocide of the Uighurs, in Tibet, with Christians and with their citizens who disagree with them on, well, anything. People routinely disappear or end up dead. Read about who ends up in prison or why. About there very gruesome organ harvesting program and experiments using human subjects. This is all of course we get to their membership in the WTO, which they've used to steal out IP, industry's and academia, to the very clear detriment of our citizens and country. Only nope do people realize the type of total global control that's given them over the well being of our country. Some knew, by the way and that includes every president since the 1990's, bar none.

Now I haven't even touched in their military or incidents and buildup including the despicable Hainan Island incident which signaled nothing but weakness from our feckless president at the time and his global toadies.

Trump is the only president in the past 30 years Ho has even attempted to address this situation. But he can't do it alone. We've been dug a very big hole by his predecessors and you can now see how the Chinese have infiltrated those in the media and in our Congress. It's a shit storm of epic proportions that we need to address now. Our republic depends on it.

511 Tebow took over a 1-3 team cruising to a blowout that would put them at 1-4, proceeded to win that game and six more to get them a playoff berth, and even win their first playoff game.

Without him to turn that season around for the Broncos and show that they could, in fact, be winners, there's no way Peyton Manning would've signed with them the next season. They would've just continued to suck balls.

Tebow's numbers may not have been good, but he had a whole lot of intangibles working for him. He really did do great things for the Broncos.

I would rather have the game manager. If by game manager, you're meaning a pocket passer.

Typically, the QBs who have the skill to run will rely too much on that. And do not spend enough time developing their "game manager" skills. i.e. reading defenses, changing plays, understanding hot routes, understanding where to go when the first and second read are not available, etc.

Colin Kaepernick was exposed as a bad QB when opposing defenses took away his running and scrambling part of his game and forced him to be a pocket passer. He was not good at reading defenses or doing much beyond his first read. He also did not have a very accurate arm.

When I think good game managers / pocket passer, I think of Peyton, Brady and Brees. These guys are masters at reading defenses, having the skill to hit the receivers they want to hit and being able to manage the pocket (i.e. just move enough to extend a play to make a pass.).

So yeah, I think the jury is still out on Jackson. He has the skill to succeed in a certain offense and with the game flow going a certain way. But obviously so far, teams have found ways to shut him down in the playoffs.

But if he can develop the game manager skills I mentioned, those combined with his amazing athletic skill would be an amazing combination. And the sky would be the limit for him.
