The Morning Rant

talking ape 02 mask.jpg

Any of you morons watch or hear President Trump's Easter message that he delivered on Good Friday?

This video is not just Donald Trump, he just spoke a few words before turning it over to a minister whose message, I must say, I haven't heard. I was so amazed at what Trump said, I just hit the pause button to ponder his words, and never finished it. He started out by observing that Good Friday is the day when

...Christians from all around the world remember the suffering and death upon the cross of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. At Easter Sunday, we will celebrate his glorious resurrection.

Wow. Seems to me this is going way beyond what would be necessary to maintain his bona fides, assuming the narrative that he's doing this cynically to impress us Jesus rubes. I think all of our presidents have claimed to be Christian, even Obama, and most of the time, it sounds kind of meh. Al Gore was the absolute worst. He was all, like "greetings, fellow Christians of which I am one" and it just came off as completely phony.

Again, assuming the narrative, Trump seems to be going out of his way to identify himself with the Christian faith. It's like he took acting lessons on how to to sound and act like a Christian.

Either that or he really is a believer...? He really does believe that Jesus died and rose again and is sitting at the right hand of God...?

Really?

Nah, that's just crazy talk.

But wait, there's more:

...Though we will not be able to gather together with one another as we normally would on Easter, we can use this sacred time to focus on prayer, reflection, and growing in our personal relationship with God. So important.

I ask all Americans to pray that God will heal our nation; to bring comfort to those who are grieving; to give strength to the doctors, nurses, and healthcare workers; to restore health to the sick; and to renew the hope in every person who is suffering.

Note that he just didn't say, "those who believe should pray", which leaves room for atheists and other non-prayers. He said "All Americans should pray." And to have a personal relationship with God, too. That was totally unnecessary for him to add. Whoever he hired as a Christian dialog coach did a good job.

So here's the transcript of his Good Friday remarks.

His Easter message was also good.

Of course I avoided the obvious question, is Donald Trump a real Christian or not. That's because I don't know -- because there's no way for me to know. Only God knows, because only God knows the President's heart. I can only say what I hope, which is that I hope that his faith is indeed sincere. But, in one sense, it doesn't matter. Of course, to him personally, it matters a great deal, and if he's faking it, he'll eventually be held accountable. I grant that he could be the biggest fake in the world, but even so, I find it so refreshing to hear those words of encouragement and acknowledgement of God coming from a public official acting in his official capacity. In that sense, he's like the medieval kings who built cathedrals and established monasteries, which expanded Christian civilization. Whether they were actually believers is of secondary importance.

Here's my theory: Trump changed. I think sometime between 2000 and 2010, Trump looked at his life, his failed marriages, didn't like what he saw, and decided he needed to get serious about living a good life. What gave us pause initially was Trump 1.0, the aggressive, high-living, freewheeling NY real estate tycoon. That's all we knew about him, so many of us were hesitant to vote for him, and in fact, of the 16 Republicans running for the Republican nomination in 2016, he was the last guy we wanted. And if Hillary wasn't such an absolute horror, or if the Democrats had nominated someone less corrupt and more moderate, many of us might have simply not voted, or voted for some third party guy. Only because the election of Hillary would have been such an extinction-level event that we were compelled to vote for Donald Trump. Anybody but Hillary Clinton. I still have nightmares about Hillary winning.

And then Trump was elected. And he proceeded to do precisely what he told us he would do during his campaign. And he went out of his way to express his solidarity with us "socons", even speaking at the annual pro-life march, which no president had ever done before.

Which surprised us all. We didn't know that Trump 1.0 had been upgraded to Trump 2.0. He still had many flaws, but he was older, wiser, more conservative. His marriage was stable. Perhaps Melania was a steadying influence.

I think many Christians can see the results of the upgrade. We like Trump despite his flaws. I showed the Good Friday video to one of our Christian friends, and she was moved to tears. Just hearing the President address national issues from a Christian framework is like a refreshing drink of water in a parched, arid desert.

And this is something that the French Davidians and the other Never Trumpers have made themselves too obtuse to understand.

Wednesday's celebs: Tania Raymonde and Billy Bob Thornton from the Amazon series Goliath. And talk about a starving artist: way back before he made it big in Hollywood, Thornton had to be admitted to a hospital due to heart problems caused by malnutrition. Normally, I would think this is just a tall tale, but somehow, with Thornton, I can believe it.

30 I get the feeling that Trump is an all or nothing kind of guy. He throws everything he has into whatever it is he does. Heart and Soul.

So, even if he chose to do something out of logical reasoning, it would not affect the intensity of the observance.

That is a pretty admirable quality.

When he fights, he is the knife.

When he loves, he is the kiss.

66 Very interesting link on Insty. The residents of LA homeless shelters were tested for Covid, and about 40% of the 350 (IIRC) tested positive, but ALL were aysmptomatic. I think this is another data point suggesting much higher exposure levels already than suspected. It might also mean that if you aren't in one of the protected populations (e.g. a nursing home), chances are you've either been exposed, or, if you haven't, that you'll be asymptomatic if you are. This is all just speculation, of course.

Still, it's surprising that there were no symptoms. I wonder if it results from the homeless lifestyle? To wit, if you've already survived living on the street, it means your immune system is strong. The weak ones have already died.

71 I actually think Trump was astonished by those who supported him earliest - faithful Christians - and it may have given him an awakening in Christ, if he was not already there by that time.

There was no doubt in my mind from the start that Trump had been motivated foremost by a love of his country and a gratitude for the life it had given him.

It's not a large leap from that to God. It would be extraordinarily difficult for a human being with a remotely normal conscience to see the thankfulness in people's eyes each day, and hear their words of gratitude and faith over and over, and not have it touch your soul. Obviously a psychopath wouldn't care, but I don't think Trump is a psychopath.

125 Politicians are by nature morally ambiguous. You certainly can't judge someone's private faith by what the media, who hates Christianity, reports. You need to look at their fruits. And by that score, Donald Trump is an actual Christian, while the Bush family hates Christ at least as much as Ben Shapiro does. Maybe Donald Trump could be a more "public" Christian, but then he'd lose whatever spiritual benefit is gained from doing non-performative good deeds.

At any rate, the people who assured me that Trump was a hedonist and the Bushes were decent Christian men got everything else wrong. Why shouldn't they fuck up this too?

132 In his Grand Rapids speech the night before November 2016 election day, Trump said something that changed what I thought about Trump.

He thanked the evangelicals for their enthusiastic support. He basically said that he is not the holiest of men, but still the evangelical support for him was unbelievably strong. And then he said "I don't know that I deserve it". But thanks.

I still think this man may be some kind of Christian either now or some day. Not just a guy who "eats the cracker". I tell people who want to shame evangelicals for their support of Trump that Trump could be a Samson, nobody's role model of virtue, just a weapon. But unspoken is the belief that he is or will be a believer. May God bless our President.

You can question Joe's faith because of both actions and words.

For all the years that he supported "woman's choice" he said that in his Catholic faith, abortion was WRONG, but he had to separate his faith from his role as a Senator.

OK.

His repudiation of his long-time support for the Hyde amendment, he said that he could no longer support policy that antithetical to heartfelt and reformed opinion in the absolute woman's right to choose.

So he can't act upon his core beliefs, despite the fact that later he can. He simply believes more in a woman's right to choose which places people as burdens to be avoided, then he believes in God.

McCain lost really badly to Obama. Palin didn't move nearly enough. There will always be small pockets of voters moved by VPs, but it's never material.

Posted by: TheJamesMadison, back to random thoughts at April 17, 2020 10:32 AM

McCain was always going to lose really badly. He simply lost less really badly, because of the energy of Palin.

I think McCain's voters were broken down into three groups:

--- those voting for McCain
--- those voting for McCain specifically because of Palin
--- those voting against Obama

You can put me in the 2nd and 3rd groups. I hated McCain and did not vote for him. Sure, I technically did, since I filled in the box next to McCain/Palin. But that vote was because of my admiration for Palin and my massive disgust with how radical I knew Obama was.

But massive disgust doesn't move the needle as much as having someone --- or something --- to vote FOR. Palin gave millions of people a reason to vote FOR McCain and not just against Obama.

That is what Biden is lacking right now. He is relying solely on the anti-Trump vote. He needs to add a running mate that gives Democrats someone to vote FOR, and not just against Trump.

351 That's all we knew about him, so many of us were hesitant to vote for him, and in fact, of the 16 Republicans running for the Republican nomination in 2016, he was the last guy we wanted. And if Hillary wasn't such an absolute horror, or if the Democrats had nominated someone less corrupt and more moderate, many of us might have simply not voted, or voted for some third party guy.
_________

Yes, but it leaves out one thing that influenced me. That is the only thing I will thank the Never Trump brigade for. They were such total dickheads that they undercut my distrust of the Donald. And for that, in a perverse way, I have to thank him.

Another, post election factor, I think, is the implacable hatred the left has shown. Not so surprising to those of us who have been conservative for a long time, but I suspect it came as a bit of a surprise to Trump himself. And it completely overrode the NY dealmaker side of him. (I've always suspected Schumer would, under truth serum, agree. He always sounds uncomfortable with the BS in a way that Pelosi does not.)

That's what the grocery clerk gal said to me when I (gently, not Karen-ishly) mentioned her nose sticking out.

Seen this suggested: Sew a pipe cleaner into the top of the mask and it can be bent to fit over the nose better.

Haven't bothered with masks, but I am tempted to cover my ratty cowboy hat with aluminum foil, create a foil mask (as someone suggested here) that just kinda drapes in front of my mouth and nose, so my beard can stick out in all directions. And wrap my hands in foil for gloves.

Would having some rabbit-ears type antennae sticking out of the hat be too much?

382 "Only God knows, because only God knows the President's heart."

true. goes for anyone, obviously. As with our government, those seeking power may finesse/coerce/deceive their way to the top, or into the bureaucracy where they can rule from the shadows.

"confess with mouth Lord Jesus AND believe in thine heart that God has raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved" ... I like the "born again of incorruptible seed" nature of Christianity, the sonship spirit born within man thing (spirit being the image of God that died in Adam that very day).

And I prefer the Resurrections of Just and Unjust, so other good people get a different good paradise, (unjust face judgement and a second death).

BUT the belief in the HEART thing is much deeper than saying magic words or being sprinkled or dipped in special water. Only God is able to do the complete forensic audit of the heart, so there are no loopholes for the insincere, nor for the Marxist that seeks his own glory and power (whether Pharisee or fake Pope).

By their fruits you shall know them ... at least at the government level, the fruit from Trump is that evil has been revealed at multiple levels, and the people feel they have a voice. Time for all good people to rise up in action.

The church went into bankruptcy and, by recommendation of Schuller, the judge allowed the Catholic Diocese of Orange County to purchase it, although they weren't the highest bidder. I looked it up, and it seems like the selling point (literally) was that the diocese wanted to use it as the nerve center of their school system (41 schools!), three hospitals and care centers, and Catholic agencies serving the poor.

A lot of repairs were needed, but it was cheaper than building a new cathedral.

471 The church went into bankruptcy and, by recommendation of Schuller, the judge allowed the Catholic Diocese of Orange County to purchase it, although they weren't the highest bidder.

475 I'm late to the party, but the possibility of redemption is a central tenet of the Christian faith.

477 Whether and when PDJT got religion is an open question, but long before that he embraced the teetotaler life, and for that he deserves our admiration.
