Thread before the Gardening Thread: Getting Out [KT]

Serving your mid-day open thread needs

mntnn.JPG

What can happen when restrictions are lifted

They are thinking about letting apartment-dwelling children outdoors for the first time in over a month in Spain. If they are accompanied by an adult. Imagine what it must be like being with kids who cannot go outdoors at all.

This week, right before President Trump's press conference, the one where he mentioned seeing light at the end of the tunnel, Gerard Van der Leun wrote, Come Out, Come Out, Wherever You Are.

It's time for somebody to turn on the light at the end of the tunnel because I have had it up to here with "the inside."

I have struggled to maintain my composure and my facade of good cheer when I am working out in The Yard of the Federal/State exercise program in our self-imposed and, so far, consensual prison. But if California is letting felons out of prison so that they can spread their prison viruses and criminal behavior among us while at the same time checking the homeless into free in fancy hotels, then I need to bust out of this jail if only to stock up on some torches and pitchforks.

I'm not alone.

One of the reasons I did fairly well with magazine and book publishing is that I have always had a good feel for the mood of the American mob. This morning I can feel several hundred million Americans getting fed up to here with this current clown show.

You can feel it too, can't you?

The great part of being in self-quarantine is that you don't have to look your best.

The great thing about breaking out of self-quarantine is you do have to look your best.

"Come out, come out, wherever you are...."

You might want to read the whole thing. It's short.

Signs of Hope

New government testing is modifying the earlier line we all read that sunlight did not kill the virus. A good reason to end some stupid government restrictions!

Today, I would like to invite you to take heart from The Occasional Fishing Threads here at AoSHQ, which also feature other wholesome outdoorsness. We hope it is not illegal to boat where you live.

And of course, the Saturday Gardening and Puttering Threads might also lure some of The Horde out of doors. At least where it is not illegal to buy seeds, and where the governor does not think that landscaping should be prohibited because it exposes people to "risk, serious risk".

Of course, there are always risks that people will go wild when restrictions, say, on beaches, are lifted. Especially if restrictions last too long.

Taking things too far

David Thompson found a piece about a woman who spends a lot of time outdoors.

There are members of The Horde who spend some time preparing for the Zombie Apocalypse, but this is something different - "The Romance of the Primitive:

I'm on my way to meet Lynx Vilden, a 54-year-old British expat who, for most of her adult life, has lived wholly off the grid. The slick roads don't help my apprehension about what lies ahead: a three-day, one-on-one experience of "living wild." The details are hazy. I've been advised to prepare for bracing climes and arduous excursions. "Wear sturdy shoes," Lynx told me. "Bring meat."

This is a woman who travels around the world, often by plane, offering primitive experiences to people.

Primitive living, it turns out, is so much easier with an inheritance.

When I finally arrive at the property in the early afternoon, she welcomes me to her wooded outpost wearing hand-stitched leathers. She heats her 900-square-foot log cabin--also the handiwork of the prior owners--by tending a wood-burning stove.

Again, if you're into Stone Age role-play, then spare cash and pre-built property, complete with solar panels, power outlets and rudimentary plumbing, does seem rather handy, perhaps a prerequisite. Such that our fearless disdainer of modernity can "divide her time" flying between continents as mood suits, from Sweden to France's Dordogne Valley and back to the mountains of Washington, USA. It's the prehistoric way.

Thompson also wrote about a young woman who lives where she could go outdoors, but spends her time stuck in a rented cabin in rural Montana, keeping a wood stove stoked very warm and belching lots of CO2, to defiantly keep a bunch of houseplants alive in the Age of Trump.

Sometimes, it can feel surprising that any beauty still exists in the world. It can feel wrong to keep cultivating our gardens while the world shatters outside our windows.

Yes, it's time to once again gawp at the mindset of the Salon-reader demographic. Or at least the Salon-writer demographic, with which it presumably overlaps. Specifically, a piece by Ms Alex Dew, "a recent graduate of Eastern Washington University's Master of Fine Arts programme in Creative Nonfiction," and whose urgent bulletin to the world is titled My Houseplant Garden Is A Tiny National Park Donald Trump Can Never Destroy.

If that sounds a tad overwrought and not entirely even-keeled, do read on.

I begin each day by taking a mental inventory of whatever horrors Trump has committed since I have been asleep,

As one does.

Don't let the two women above scare you off from the Gardening and Puttering Thread which will be coming up later today.

Music

Have a good weekend. Hope you can get outdoors a little.

47 there was a sort of ad hoc protest at the Salem capitol building yesterday, for about 30 or so minutes people were driving around the block the builiding is no, honking.

Day before yesterday there was some sort of child care provider protest too, which, while they were keeping 6 feet apart by holding onto a rope (child care providers do that for group visits) it still came off kind of wimpy.
It may have been the leader doing chants through the playskool looking bullhorn.

If you drive over the bridge over the Willamette river you can see the hobo encampment at the city park that has sprung up. Originally they were camping on the city streets, and then the city decided to house them at the state fair grounds, and apparently that wasn't good enough.
The least coherent ones are back to roaming the streets.

There was an article in the local rag, on the front page, about the Sheriff doing a clean up at the park yet again, so I am wondering how long the shut down is going to remain something to endure.

I have said my life is in the hands of a higher power. I did not mean Kate Brown.

78 I have a theory about Reopening America. based on a similarity to economic history following the end of WWII:

1) The end of WWII was both sudden & completely unexpected. The war was supposed to go on at LEAST another year, & probably longer, but then... Enola Gay.

Economists, ALL of them, predicted that America would go right back into its pre-War economic recession. After all, govt orders to factories ("cost plus 10%") came to an abrupt end. These factories were shut down for re-tooling, & Rosie the Riveter got a pink slip, and... no-one had confidence that there would be any demand for consumer goods.

But there was, and how! All that enforced savings for 3+ years ("Buy War Bonds!") fueled the greatest economic boom in U.S. history-- everybody wanted 1) a baby; 2) a new car; & 3) a pre-fab house.

2) On a much smaller scale, there has been de facto "forced savings" for the last 3 months (i.e., by the time businesses start to reopen).

I posit that there will be a mini-boom after the Reopening, because people have been saving money whether they wanted to or not... no restaurants; nowhere to drive to; no dog groomer expenses, etc.

If I'm right, based on U.S. economic history following WWII, then fasten your seatbelts.

We can list the ways in which the Obama administration went out of its way to make life hard for the average American.

Yet, we went on about our business.

A little tidbit to add to that. YOU KNOW that the guy in the White House is going to stick it to the Chinese. I guarantee that right this very moment his entire Economic team is throwing together incentives for retail, electronics, textiles and steel to return massively to this country at the outright expense of China. One of the big costs these days is distribution. Somehow that will be leveraged to make it more expensive to import from China. The recovery here will be faster than it could have been because it's basically a clean slate and large manufacturers have to adapt to their current revenue. They will, almost, be forced to follow whatever highway the White House lays out for them.

I predict China will regret the last few months... a lot.

129 The Left likely did not imagine, a lifetime ago during the impeachment circus, that they could beat us with public health as the issue, but here we are.

Public health trumps all, which is why we see the police at ever level, state, county, municipal, village, all so totally on board with mandates for masks, assembly control, business closures, and all the rest.

It is why the Karens can, with some emails and phone calls, and messages to newly-built online snitch boards, close parks, beaches, hiking trails, bikeways, and any kind of outdoor recreation.

Having found this, they really need nothing else. Going forward, it'll be public health all the way.

To demonstrate is to kill people.

To have a political rally is to kill people.

To vote in person is to kill people.

Demand a face to face with a politician at any level from small town board up to U.S. Senate? It is killing people to do it.

132 There may be a few comparisons to post WW2, but maybe more like the Marshall Plan than a domestic boom. The war was years of pent up demand AND we bombed to oblivion most of our competition around the world. It set America in a unique position, with the UN and IMF being centered in the US, and we became The Superpower.

The $5-10 TRILLION of government money is now filling the big holes, many of which were dug pre-virus (e.g. all the US debt in the system, pension holes, corporate debt, personal debt). Much will be poured into corporate debt, some of it bad debt. The richest will once again benefit the most ... even the bad actors.

Choosing a more fulfilling lifestyle is one thing, saving the country from the globalist oligarchs is another aspect that must be confronted, if we are to maintain/regain liberty. A restructuring of debt on behalf of America, and on behalf of the citizens living on credit (debt slaves) ... should be part of the "new world order" ... which has indeed been thrust upon us.

To see it, you're going to have narrow the range. It used to be you could do the changes and it would generate a URL for that change, but no more with the update system.

Note this is real GDP (inflation adjusted) in 2012 dollars.

You can change the units to look at change, and see that drop was between 10 and 15% in GDP.

This was a YUGE drop in GDP, but no real recession as we think of it occured.

143 A restructuring of debt on behalf of America, and on behalf of the
citizens living on credit (debt slaves) ... should be part of the "new
world order" ... which has indeed been thrust upon us.

It's an interesting thought, but there will be no return to not living on credit. The real problem is the Dallas effect, which means it's easy now for the average person to see how the wealthy live, and want summa that for themselves, whether they've earned it or not. Thus, people's spending outstrips their means. That won't stop.

Where do you get this "no recession" stuff? It was a deep recession and cost the Democrats control of congress. Truman was dead man walking in 1948 and only managed to scrape in because Dewey was so complacent that the sleepwalked through the election.

High unemployment, massive housing shortages - it sucked. My grandfather volunteered to stay in the Army and was the last officer demobilized in his unit because his wife was pregnant (with my uncle) and he had no prospects for a job or any way to pay the hospital bill.

I suggest watching "The Best Years of Our Lives" to get a sense at how super-prosperous everyone was at the end of the war.

When a monster blizzard is predicted with 10 inches of snow, etc., people grumble about how the forecasters hype things, but other than the kids (and teachers) who want snow days, people are usually glad when Snowmageddon passes them by.

Similarly, when I hear a line of super-cell thunderstorms is on the way, I'm glad if the power doesn't go out and all we get is nature's fireworks display.

I don't want to get all mystical, but I know a lot of people who went all-in on prayer as this thing came upon us. I certainly took Lent a lot more seriously and when our bishop called for additional fasting days, I went along.

Can prayer lift a plague? Science says "no," but science also tells us the dead can't rise from tomb.

Just something to think about.

Professional Sports are shut down because God forbid a sickly basketball fan contracts the virus and dies--the league and the owners of the venue will be sued.

The war is "frozen" because neither side can break the deadlock.

The initial Russian momemtum collapsed and the cumulative cost to gain ground is beyond Russia's ability to sustain.

Similarly, Ukraine lacks the capability to dig out the separatists, so the stalemate continues.

227 "It's an interesting thought, but there will be no return to not living on credit." pep

At some point, the printing of infinite money may fail. Either a currency problem, or inflation sets in, or interest rates jump up. Easy Money is now "zero-bound", after 35 years of lower fed fund rates. The new thing is ZIRP plus QE to infinity, or MMT (magic money tree). Does that really work?

Well we have been doing it ... to some degree ... something could break, one way or another. The bailouts or the richest, and the economy revolving around banking and lending infinite "money" ... I think maybe it could end. To get their I think a lot of personal debt has to be forgiven down to what people can pay, without only making interest payments.

I mostly see Paul Craig Roberts as goofy, but I think he may be on the right track on this ... he suggests right down personal debts to where people can pay ... better than bailing out the top so they can try to squeeze more debt out of the overburdened proles. (my paraphrase) Private debt overhang could lead to a greater depression, triggered by virus close downs. (he also says nationalize the banks or any that get the fed bailouts, explains how to get them back into private hands after "fixed")

NJ does "allow" plaquenil for known cases, the restrictions were to prevent people from handing out scripts to the unaffected friends "just in case". I know the RWJ system and Hackensack Meridian are using it. Remdesivir is a mystery. That was IDd and written off as "anectotal" when Washington State was having its first cases. 288 Greetings:

Luckily, I had parents who taught me (mostly through repetition) the fundamentals: good food, proper rest, fresh air, and exercise. That sunlight hasn't yet been recognized media-wise as a positive strikes me as a "too tight" a narrative effect. Free vitamin D for all.

I also haven't seen any recognition that this would be a good time to eat more vegetables.

293 Thank you for saying this. I sometimes feel like this place is infested with Black Lives Matter people with all the irrational hatred of law enforcement.

My brother is a Chicago police officer and a good man. My former manager is a local Sheriff and also a good man.

There are plenty of good men and women who are in law enforcement. Broad brush smearing of them is unfair, whether it's coming from Colin Kaepernick or commenters on a blog.
Posted by: Clyde Shelton at April 18, 2020 12:29 PM (Do5/p)

I agree, but I think a lot has to do with the particular area. In other words, there are some jurisdictions that seem to attract the power mad and others where the cops are more grounded. Believe it or not, I think the NYPD is one of the more professional police organizations around, while across the Hudson, the Bergen County Sheriffs are the worst.

Re that '77 flu. It only infected those under 20. Anyone older had immunity to it. I was just reading that modern techniques have proven that '77 virus had not mutated a whit since the '50s. That proves it was kept in a lab, and then released.

It was the Chicoms. And again, the US didn't make a big deal because of Cold War concerns.

And the top flight labs in the Western world have also had a few oopsies with pathogens over the years. I'm concluding this is not something to be playing with.

The historical deserved hatred that Ukraine has for Russia has caused them not to make the best decisions in their interest. Their internal corruption doesn't help either.

One of the main triggers Russia used for seizing the Crimea was the unnecessary ban by Ukraine of the Russian language.

Is it the tweet where he bravely announced that he finally let his month-long pent up tears for those suffering due to the pandemic roll down his ample face as he couldn't take the grief anymore. Or something.

Some of the replies were: grow a pair, real men don't cry, look into treatment for excessive estrogen (that one was from a chick). Twas a fun thread.

Of course some rubes were taking in by his Twitter display.

So it's not just Don Le-mon that fake cries. But at least he can do it on demand. Stelter can't and has to wait till he's off on the weekend to shed his "tears".

It is easy to not be invested in what is being said and although they sometimes talk about the plague, it is mostly in relation to sports so again, easy to just let it be background noise. When I get tired of that, I listen to country music which is very up. I sing along with the music and sometimes dance around my kitchen.

The concept of the subliminal message is real. If you are ACTIVELY watching/listening to a news show, you can filter the lies through your rational brain. If you are inactively listening, the messages go right to the center of your brain, without filter. Hence, depression.

TURN IT OFF!

++++++Like you, I'm on my own. I used to listen to talk radio but then could just not take the constant negative loud voices. I switched to Sports radio. Try it. It is easy to not be invested in what is being said and although they sometimes talk about the plague, it is mostly in relation to sports so again, easy to just let it be background noise. When I get tired of that, I listen to country music which is very up. I sing along with the music and sometimes dance around my kitchen.

I used to have a general sense of China as a world menace. Then all this happened.

You can find them in many places on the web. There are also several apps and podcasts.

Youtube, for whatever reason, is different from the other "social media" outlets, in that there may be some censorship being done, but it's generally not political. They use a heavy hand when it comes to copyright stuff, which lots of creators HATE, but generally if you have an interest in whatever topic you mind can think of, there are shedloads of videos on that topic.

And you can usually rely on the algorithm to find what you're looking for and feed it right to you.

So for example, let's say you want to hear Thomas Sowell talk about a particular topic. You put his name in there, and bang, there's a dozen videos of Thomas Sowell, and another endless stream of others who have similar takes to Mr. Sowell's.

In other words there is NO censorship of conservative content, and all you have to do is give Youtube a hint what you are looking for. It's there.

Yep, I was full on the "NeverTrump" train early on in the 2016 campaign because of his 9/11 conspiracy crap and his wishy-washiness on the sanctity of life.

I had been supporting Scott Walker. Then when he dropped out like a coward, I reluctantly looked at Cruz, even though I only vote for Governors or those with executive experience for President.

I eventually went full in my support for Trump when it became clear to me he was the only one serious about the issue of illegal immigration and the wall.

It became crystal clear to me the rest of the GOP was worthless when I realized that all they had to do to neutralize Trump was to take on his prime issue of illegal immigration and the wall. But no one would. I knew then the entire Party was BS.

Proudly voted for Trump in 2016 and have grown to be an even bigger supporter throughout his Presidency based on both his policies as well as how he fights the Democrats and the media.

You know, now is probably as good a time as any to be having reasoned, rational debates about the role of government, and the extent to which various aspects of it are necessary. The argument can range from necessary to necessary evil to just straight up evil.

Having this debate is not the same as saying anybody should hate anybody, because that is beside the point. Your brothers MIGHT be good people... and still be serving in an evil system.

And maybe they aren't, but it doesn't do any good to shut down the debate, due to an emotional attachment to specific individuals.

What if the models were actually correct?

I am not denying that Divine Providence hasn't played a role in the lower than predicted cases of Wuhan Flu and deaths.

I cannot, however, grant your premise the the models were actually correct because, as someone who created, updated and worked with mathematical models, I am well aware that the useless hacks who foisted their crap on clueless policy makers were not only wrong, but incompetently wrong.

It was always about getting there "firstest with the mostest" because that keeps the gubmint funding sluices open and running to their brim.

421 Anyone complaining about Trump hammering home the "saved millions of lives" narrative, think about it. Consider the state of the economy, he's putting himself in a golden spot and the Left can't do anything about it. They certainly can't say he *didn't* save millions of lives... because if so, then what the shit was this all about? So either he's a hero and saved millions of lives or the Left has overblown this whole thing. With either narrative, the public can't sour on him, only the Left.

If he starts going on about how we all overblew this thing, then HE is partly responsible for that and has to answer to it. Also every death after that can be pinned on him because he's the one saying it's "overblown".

If things take a dramatically bad turn - or the Left continues inflating the death/illness numbers - he looks like a total fucking idiot and say hello to President Jarrett again.

Much as I love all the morons and ettes (and I mean that), and I know a lot of you are pissed off at what the Left has done here, I'm glad several of you aren't the ones trying to get Trump reelected.

Someone the other day was talking about the well known circumstance, after Reagan was shot, how he made a joke about hoping the docs who were getting ready to work him over, that he hoped they were all Republicans.

To which one of the docs replied "we are now."

That's an open question that is worth pursuing. Are there docs who are so politicized, they'll provide care based on outcomes they seek that have concern for the patient as an afterthought?

But hey at least the corpses that are piling up will be from suicide rather than Chinese Lung Aids, flu, or various pneumonias.

I'm willing to bet, "a lot". And that is de facto malpractice, irrespective of the "argument" regarding there having been no vetted clinical trials for this particular treatment regimen.

That an unlettered layperson like Rita Wilson (Tom Hanks' spouse), who had the disease in Australia, was apparently administered chloroquine (instead of hydroxychloroquine), had an adverse reaction to it, (survived nonetheless), has gone public to bad mouth the treatment, and has been accorded unlimited credence by the media, a good portion of the public and a good portion of the medical establishment, is all you need to know regarding the majority of people's understanding of "science", despite their saying at every opportunity that they "effin' love science".

Probably a good thing I didn't see it.

I remain hopeful (and possibly hopelessly naive) that when all this is over, we can have these discussions. Expose the various ways this stuff is being politicized where it shouldn't be.

I think there are way too many people operating inside the Medical Industrial Complex who believe they have immunity to being exposed this way.

Well said.

Notice how Trump has now maneuvered the governors into being the ones who are responsible for testing, treatment, deciding on when/how to open up again. Doing so not only revives the previously moribund federalism,* but also puts the governors on the hook for their own decisions. No bungling of decisions and then blaming Trump; their decisions are 100% on their own tab.

489 Real tyranny has now fallen on my little far flung town, they've ordered all of the Dunkin Donuts to close until further notice.

This is bullshit.

I had a nightm...no...make that a dream...I had a dream last night that General George Patton slapped Brian Stelter so hard the tectonic ripple emanating off his baldy baby blubbering bean eradicated Covid-19 thru what the General deemed "plenty o' positive pulsin' power." I sat up in bed and applauded like a Frenchman greeting Lindy at Le Bourget Airfield and then I laid back and slept a sleep much like Ripley after she flushed the Pelosibeast out of the loading bay door.
