When people test positive for Chicom Flu, their doctors are telling them to stay home. So everyone who has it is not in the hospital. So we don't overwhelm the system.

/that does not explain why we have to cancel all other surgeries though, and lay off hospital personnel. Unless of course we're planning to go NHS to save the hospital system...

The wife bought some peeps recently. I had forgot about them and they had completely left my brain. The night before easter I was playing guitar, focusing, and the wife reintroduces me to peeps. It went like this-
Her (poking her head in the door when she thought the time was right and holding some small yellow object) - Peep?
Me- Huh?
Her- Peep?
Me- What???
Her- Peep?
Me- WTF language is that, what are you asking?
Her- Walks over and drops a yellow bird on the desk and says peep.
Me- I bite the head off the peep and hand her back the body. lol

219 Since I couldn't attend Mass yesterday I read Ignatius' letter to Smyrna. And then got into a rabbithole of scholarship asking what Ignatius' sources were. . .

Especially Pier Beatrice, 'The "Gospel according to the Hebrews" in the apostolic fathers' (2006).

With Justin Martyr, 1 Apology 50, the source is obvious: Luke. But when Jerome paraphrased Ignatius, Jerome claims it ISN'T Luke - he says it is "the Gospel of the Hebrews" sometimes called the Syriac Gospel.

If Jerome is right (disclosure: he's my patron saint, so, biased) then Ignatius brings a third independent witness to the appearance to the Disciples, alongside Luke and John.

So this reminds me of my great victory so far this year.

When I was a kid, my parents would sometimes take us out for ice cream to a place called "King Cone" in Pittsburgh. My dad would always drive (if drive-thru) or order (if we walked up to the counter). Also every time, he would bite off the ornate tip of the ice cream cone where they give it a flourish so it's topped with a curlicue.

In the before times (January), I went to visit them and it was a warm day. We went for ice cream. This time, *I* was driving. I handed my mom her cone and, before handing by dad his, I bit off the top of the cone.

Victory: 30 years in the making.

Um, Trump declassified that stuff as a FU to the intelligence community for trying to frame him with the Russia nonsense.
Zerohedge went over the documents with a fine toothed comb to do their usual eleventy thing, and the most they came up with was:
1) JFK took a bullet from in front and from behind (I'm not sure I believe the coordination that would have taken in the 60s, but that's what the autopsy said.
2) One of the FBI investigators said during a presentation a couple years later that he thought Ruby was Oswald's accomplice.
3) The CIA covered up what they could because Oswald was on their payroll as an informant. So it they were avoiding institutional embarrasment, not trying to cover that they ordered the hit.

Peeps has an annual Peep-diorama contest.

I keep meaning to enter it with dark, Moron-worthy entries like:

1.) "One For my Peeps," featuring a Peep member of the Rollin 30s street gang pouring out a forty of OE800 on a pile of dead Peeps, as a '64 Eldorado on hydraulics and full of Blood Peeps vanishes down the street.

2.) "Second Battle of Peep," with Peeps strewn across the barbed wire in no-man's land, dead Peeps piled in the trenches, and others being chased back in by a German Peep gas attack.

3.) "Peeples' Republic," where the Peeps in the foreground are berating a naughty Peep in a struggle session, while in the background PRA Peep soldiers are chasing down a female peasant Peep and bayoneting her baby Peep.

I have yet to think of others, but I'm sure y'all could help.

He understood why lots of folks of a certain age still lament the loss of Stevie Ray Vaughn. The comment to the video I liked was this:

Wanders out onto the stage, eyes looking like two pissholes in a snowbank, picks his nose, picks up his guitar and gives an offhand performance in a sound check that most musicians would give significant body parts to do just once in their lives...that's Stevie Ray

And revising.

There were some really interesting, not to mention very yelly, discussions in fanfic writing groups I was in about the differences in cultural references when Brits write in US based fandoms and Americans write in Brit based fandoms. People used to get people to Britpick their works to catch stuff and the Brits would get VERY huffy about it if you didn't. The same did not work in reverse.

I had to explain multiple times that no one in the US knows what revising for exams means. To us that means you are allowed to go back and change your exam answer which would be awesome. Apparently it just means studying. That's it.

Then there is the use of the term reckon. In the US, that term is pretty much an indicator that you are lower class, probably Appalachian. In the UK, it's not really a class signifier.

Then there's Americans discovering that Brits eat baked beans for breakfast.

Good times, good times.

Man, I miss having a fandom but I do not miss fandom itself at all.

513 I think the "obesity" issue is similar to the overall "urban dweller" risk factor and things like high blood pressure and smoking - poor cardiovascular health

THAT is the risk factor for a negative outcome with COVID - your cardiovascular system isn't in great shape.

you can (possibly?) be overweight but still have a healthy cardio system! it's possible for sure, I see these people during runs and am like "wow!"

a lot of the more serious complications look to me like systemic reactions to lack of O2. I'm pretty sure that what's going on is that people with bad versions are NOT GETTING O2 - somehow, for some reason, could be immune response, could be a mechanism of the virus. you start with a much shittier deck of cards if you are sedentary or otherwise unhealthy - this is why fresh air, getting active, these things are important! and contraindicated by this "sit in your house peon" advice - which is generally terrible for viral infections!

anyway. my two cents. get outside! (not today I guess). do breathing exercises. do cardio!

Also: "writing an exam" (or, as we proper American English speakers call it "taking an exam" or sometimes "sitting an exam.") They use this one in Canada.

This caused much confusion in my group once, because we were working on writing a new certification test and our Canadian colleagues came to the first review meeting ready to take the test, but not to create questions for it. It took us about 10 minutes before we figured out why we were talking about wildly different things.

People used to get people to Britpick their works to catch stuff and the Brits would get VERY huffy about it if you didn't. The same did not work in reverse.

------

That one's easy... for the most part, Americans don't really give a damn about what Brits do. Brits very much do care what we do.

It's like the weird thing with talking to a certain type of Canadian. It's bewildering... a lot of them view everything through this lens of America and what Americans do, how we act, what our policies are, etc. Very adversarial, too.

And you're standing there like "WTF? Back off, Pierre! I don't even care about this." You meet this type mostly traveling in other countries, in my experience. Most of the ones who come here for reason X, Y, or Z aren't like that.

Though I did have one bad experience with a Canuckistani dickhead on the MallRide during the Rockies/Red Sox World Series.

I would wager there are a few very rare cases where young people without any obvious co-morbidities will die of this for reasons we just don't know - because we still don't know much about this damned thing yet. Who knows what role genetics might have?

There was a sad case of a 33 year old man from the Milwaukee area who recently moved to NYC and worked on Wall Street. He was healthy, in good shape, a non-smoker - and yet an ambulance took him to the hospital in Manhattan and he died in the ICU. I felt terrible for his poor parents - not only are they heartbroken, they were having trouble getting the body shipped from NY and planning for a funeral now, when nobody can go to the service - what a hellish situation to be in.

684 Regarding hospital closures...

My wife work for Maine Health. It's the largest healthcare system in the state. She's not in the main hospital location.

The entire healthcare system is practically shut down. She used to see 15 patients a day on average. She's down to less 10 patients. Weekly. Half a day, once a week.

As of Friday, there were 29 patients in the hospital with COVID-19. It is a 600 room hospital. The rest of the rooms, with less than a dozen or so exceptions, is empty. This is in the most populated city in the state. The hospital is losing $83m a month.

The system has said that come May 2nd, they don't know if they'll be able to pay my Wife. Note that one of her board certifications is primary care and she's certified in intubation and ventilator operation.

We need to reopen or else the healthcare industry that needs the "non-essential" patients to survive is going to fold.

Posted by: Jordan61 at April 13, 2020 01:32 PM (Ez6QX)

I was able to visit the UK for 2 weeks back in 2016, and we visited pubs and restaurants from London to Edinburgh, and we found a LOT of great Beers and some pretty decent meals. But the Absolute BEST meal I had during the entire trip was my very first night there, when we simply had the Hotel Buffet near Heathrow. 3 Tables of all Indian food cooked by the native Indian staff, all levels of curry, all manner of foods I've heard of. And it was all *fantastic*!

So I'd have to say that in my experience, the average hotel with a minimum wage kitchen staff, provided they are all from India, puts out better food than most of Britain's top chefs.

The newest thinking is that the virus also attaches to red blood cells (RBC) and prevents a lot of oxygen and carbon dioxide exchange in the lungs.
Somebody else mentioned this on AoS last week.
The HCQ latches onto RBC (like it does for malaria, so we kind of already know this), and prevents the virus from attaching to RBC and hurting respiration.
Your friend needs to eat a lot of red meat and try to replenish his system with fresh RBC ASAP. He'll likely feel tired for some time to come until that happens.

Nobody did, really. There was a tremendous amount of disinformation coming out of China.

The latest "guessing" is that virus actually got here last fall (September or October). Tom Servo described how his Dad died last November, and the symptoms kind of match the Covid19 virus.
