this is not all that accurate, they do breed dogs however! honestly they have a very different "take" on this - they consider them somewhat of livestock? but not all Amish dog breeders are cold - many of them are very good to the their dogs. they do tend to line breed overmuch - but then again they do that with themselves!
anyway stop being so negative jeez. I have previously owned two dogs from Amish - very healthy, well tempered, small breeder of a single breed, puppies lived in the house. you just have to do your homework. the ones to avoid have many dogs and many breeds, but even they tend to care for them and socialize the pups just fine

Wolf is an IDIOT, but he's wisely been pretty much leaving them alone. they are doing all their normal things, they are allowed to farm, do construction, go to Sunday services, etc.

At this point, it looks like, maybe, how it will end up, is a gathering of no more than ten* at Mom's after all. Hope they have room for me!

The Amish of Allen and Steuben counties lived on middle-sized farms, and rode in open buggies, no cabs, no canopies over. Think "buckboard" from the western films you've seen.
The stores in this part of Fort Wayne had wagon tie-ups for the one-horse rigs these folks used for going out and about. We saw Amish in the stores and out in the parking lots almost everytime we shopped.
They of course use no electricity on their farms and in their homes, but they seemed to permit common usage of a single electrified shed along a gravel road, in which was a freezer and a fridge. Who knows what they kept in there, maybe meds that needed to be cold, or . . . ice cream.
We are at the Meijers supercenter one summer night after dark, hardly anyone in the store, checking out on the one register operating. Behind us, and no one behind them, were an old Amish couple, him tall and gaunt, sort of an old Amish Abe Lincoln, and she is tiny, 90 pounds max, old style bonnet with an almost-circular brim almost like a tunnel.
They are checking out close to 20 half gallons of store-brand strawberry ice cream.
I was always trying to chat up Amish if I saw an opening, just to experience that little interface with the alternative universe of theirs, so I go and see if she wants to answer my question.
I lean over, look into her sweet face inside that bonnet tube, and say, "Hello, ma'am. Whatcha gonna do with all that strawberry ice cream."
She looks way up at Jonah, let's call him that, and he nods and smiles. She grins and says to me, "We're havin' a weddin'!"
And I knew where they were heading after they left Meijer's. And why they have a community freezer.

It doesn't seem to occur to him that AOC doesn't want Biden to win. She gets gets a lot more publicity as the leader of the brave Resistance than she would as a congressman with a Democratic Administration.
Biden losing also means that the radicals take over the Democratic Party - they can argue that the Democrats put up "electable" candidates twice in a row and lost, and that now it is time to nominate an ideologue. Having Trump in for a second term is also great for left-wing organizing.
She has also doubtless noticed that Biden is a terrible, terrible candidate - withholding the endorsement partially insulates her from criticism when Biden loses.

The women mostly looked a little hard to me, but I guess that's the life they live on the farms.
One of my first encounters with them was at a Target store right up the road, and I am going to the service counter to do a return.
In front of me is an Amish woman, maybe middle 30s, and she is returning a half dozen Fisher Price ride-on toys. She's just standing there, all the toys on the counter top, no boxes or cartons, looking bored with the wait, while the counter clerk is talking to her manager, likely asking, "can we refund for these toys that looked like they got dragged here through the gravel all the way from Grabill?"
She got her refund. Probably the stare.
We knew a couple named Jacob and Mary Yoder, down the road from the Meijers. Met them looking for free kitty cats. Jacob and Mary had eleven children, and one hundred and eleven grandkids that day we checked out their new litter, out in the barn.

Yeah, there's a whole spectrum of them. I think in general each congregation, or small group of related congregations, sets its own rules. They don't have any kind of central authority like a Pope or the Southern Baptist Convention or whatever.
There's one group that drives cars, but considers chrome to be a sinful frippery. If they buy a car that has any chrome on it they'll paint it black.

The federal govt. maintains an electronic account at the federal reserve, dealing in electronic M0 directly. And now it has close to $1T in cash on hand.
Why you may ask. Well, short term T-bills are trading at 0% interest, so this week, Uncle went on T-bill borrowing spree.
This $1T is getting ready to start spewing that stimulus money out.

Likewise, with 3D scan tech you should be able to buy what actually fits you, custom-stitched.

And there's another crazy thing. Short term T-bill rates are hovering around zero. During the last week in March, those sort term rates actually went negative for a while.
But guess what. Treasury has a rule that auction rates can't go negative. Only to zero. This was enormous bonus to the primary dealers. They buy T-bills at 0, and sell them on the secondary market for more,negative yield.
This is a total freebie to the primary dealers (big banks who have the ability to scare up tens of billions of dollars at pop when Uncle has to borrow money).
Treasury should be able to go negative itself, and reap the benefits directly. This is just a rule, not a law, so they could change it.
Why this rule exists no one knows, save negative rates might just make Treasury's computer programs hiccup, or something.

That is basically the rationale for GOF research. They claim it better informs them how viruses mutate to become able to infect humans and become more infectious and deadly.
Even if that is true, the risks completely overwhelm any such benefit.
As far as I'm concerned the only safe place to be doing that shit would be on a Moonbase, an even then with an orbiting nuclear weapons platform to be able to nuke it from lunar orbit if necessary. To be sure.
And even then, the "dual use" nature of this is such I doubt I'd even do that. The knowledge could get out and into enemies and nutjobs hands.

We live among the Amish here. After the 8th grade your formal education stops. You have zero access to any knowledge outside of your community. None. History? Of Germany, perhaps. Or of the Church elders. Not American history. Why would the Amish desire to learn about a culture they detest?
We had a storm blow through a few years ago and I drove around our country block to check in on an older neighbor who had a tree down on his house. When i got there, two Amish guys were standing over his tractor trying to jump start it and HAD NO CLUE what they were doing. They were for all intents and purposes, 'ignorant field hands'. The smart Amish are businessmen - the top 5 % of a community. The rest are worker bees.

These are the businessmen. There will be allowed ONE PHONE per community otherwise for emergency purposes. Each community has its' own dictates, but all pretty much fall in line with 'English bad'. I know a guy that lives just a couple of miles up the road I interact with fairly often. Amish until Rumspringing. He bailed. Went back to school and works in the R and D department in the RV industry. Rides to work on his Harley. Most Amish and Mennonite around me do not have electrical appliances in their homes to justify a generator. Yeah, they might have a propane fridge, but ptomaine and botulism are real things even to the Amish. They must have refrigerated storage tanks for milk operations so yes, electricity is allowed into the dairy farm via a line from the road, but only because the State law demand it.

Like I mentioned here sometime last month, I never heard Zappa when I was growing up. Lots of hard rock, English rock, Southern rock, and some country. Heck, I also like some classical from time to time.
So all this was new to me, and I learned a lot about Zappa in general.
I really do get that some people hate Zappa music, because it does not fit a specific box that most music resides in.
Wish that there was more exposure to Zappa when I was growing up. But that is the way it goes, and this last month of Zappaology, taught by Professor MisHum, has been a lot of fun for me.
How about a month of Allman Brothers? All the kids are in bands too, and Derek Trucks is married to, and plays with, Susan Tedeschi, a greatly underrated talent. She reminds me of a younger Bonnie Raitt.
Today, in memory of John Prine, her band released a live performance of "Angel from Montgomery", a Prine song that Bonnie Raitt made famous about 20 some odd years ago.

Anyway - same-same. First violent maneuver, guy ejects them both.
I might have had high-g experiences, but I never thought of ejecting. Pretty violent. Most safety orientation was about releasing the 5 buckles on various belts and getting out *without* accidentally touching the ejection lever, for ground evacuation.

Since we're clearly not prepared to actually do what would be necessary to change any outcome in Hong Kong (whatever that might even be), it puts us in a tough spot.
Historically we'd restrict ourselves, where there was no prospect of direct effective intervention, to principled objections, and in select cases "sanctions" - but here obviously all the normal options are just sort of lame, or mooted by our ongoing relationship/competition with Beijing.
It's a weird situation, but "arming" Hong Kong seems nutso from every angle.

I think you're overestimating the capability of the ChiCom Navy. While they may get a shot in first and could very well bloody our nose, their ships and sailors will not be able to retain viability after our counterstrike. They simply have no blue-water seafaring tradition in both construction and ship management/handling to be taken very seriously at the moment. Like I said, they could hurt us, but they won't survive any prolonged naval combat. Our subs are so much better than theirs and they, along with out carrier air wings, will be a significant factor in any naval war with the ChiComs.
The ChiCom Navy is not the Empire of Japan's Navy in 1912 (fresh off the Port Arthur victory). The ChiComs are more like Peter the Great attempting to create a Russian blue-water navy. It only took another few hundred years for that to come to fruition, but even now that navy has sunk back to second-rate status from its Soviet heyday.
IMAO, the ChiComs are bluffing with their naval moves and we will call anything they raise, to their detriment.

China owns virtually the entire commercial shipbuilding industry. At this time they are much more capable of producing warships than we are, and that should be obvious from the inability of the USN to get new classes in the water. Look what happened to LCS - the shipyard was unable to do the welding properly, and the hulls started to crack.
Military hardware is based on civilian industry. If we don't claw back some of that industry from the Chinese we will be unable to compete.

My FIL was turned down three times for disability and he had bad heart disease. He had an advocate who had just about turned it around but he died before it being fixed. It is standard practice for them to automatically turn down disability unless you are an unwed black mother in Detroit.

Fight it first on your own, gathering lots of documentation, as being denied the first time applying is unfortunately normal. If after another two or three attempts, then hire one of those disability claims lawyers. But I wouldn't hire them yet because you do have to pay them, usually a hefty portion of whatever back SS disability you receive.

FYI: 6 month waiver on SS payments from the date declared disabled and a 29 month waiver on being eligible for Medicare from the date declared disabled.
That 29 month waiver really fucked me. I was deemed disabled but I couldn't get Medicare? That was a real kick in the nuts -- and the checking account.

Tried to get Boy Franpsycho connected with his training program yesterday and it was a fail. We met with the teachers last week who set up an entire program on Zoom. Then the school district decided Sunday to ban the use of Zoom, so the online meetup Monday was a disaster, the teachers' efforts are pissed away, and Boy Franpsycho spends another week without enough to do.

Skip, it was also called One by One, narrated by Stacy Keach. Sometimes pointlessly sensationalistic, and it didn't hold back on the graphic wrecks, but it really points up the differences in safety then (early 70s) and now. And Keach is superb.

In the event of an invasion the Chinese carrier is expendable. It's old Russian junk that they've been using as training wheels, and they've packed far more aircraft on it than they can operate. Officially the carrier's complement lands back on the ship and the rest on the mainland, but I don't think they expect it to survive.
The big threat to Taiwan is tens of thousands of short range ballistic missiles. The Chinese government has had spies combing the island for decades. Won't be much left in the way of defensive assets if they decide to cut loose.

So modern tools have taken over for them at work. Remember 20 years ago we hired some as sub-contractor and the boss would have a cell phone kept in the chicken coop and any power tools were only from generators. They still all come to work in large crew cabs, often a non Amishman driving with 8 guys stuffed in for the long commute.

That's an idiotic standard. Remember, the reason for all of the shutdowns was so that the Hospital system would not be overloaded by too many cases. Therefore, the ONLY significant number is the number of new hospitalizations per day. If that number is equal to or less than the number of people leaving hospital per day, then there is absolutely no danger of crashing the system, and therefore things should begin to open up as soon as that point is reached.
The numbers of deaths is absolutely immaterial to that decision. It's an emotional number, but meaningless.

The models are nonsense, anyone allowing a "model" to dictate or inform their actions is ignorant and dangerous.
The models said there would be 2.5 million deaths.
The models said our hospitals would be overrun.
The models said we would need tens of thousands of ventilators.
It was all made up bullshit to achieve an effect.
Which they did.

The hierarchy in Mesopotamia, where that story happened, are pretty smart. They must have been aware of the perils of inbreeding and brought in some outsiders, because the kids in the area all look normal and not a batch of recessive genes. They work in local stores and are indistinguishable from regular kids.

Well, if I understand their reasoning correctly, they believe at that number of deaths they can keep the outbreak from spreading through mass testing and "infection detectives" to the point where nobody is dying from it anymore. They say details of that plan will come at a later date.

I think the use of number of deaths as a metric is because it is a specific value traceable to verifiable records (all though rampant cooking of the books affects the accuracy of any subsequent predictions).

That is an exercise in massive goalpost moving. This economy cannot survive - this country cannot survive - by shutting down everything until we "stop" the virus. The stated goal from the beginning was simply to slow down the progression of it so that our health care system was not overloaded.
here's a hard fact, but still a fact - given the UNDER use of the medical system currently, we actually would be much better off as a group if it started to spread, ie more of us being exposed, faster now. That's the only way to get over this, also the best way to avoid the fear of a new outbreak in the fall.

Oh, it's gonna come back in the fall and the idiots will panic again and shut everything down based on those "models".
We are delaying our move until next spring/summer because we know what is going to happen in the fall. We were going to move in the October November time frame but I suspect we will be under lock down by that time when the virus reappears.

I think I agree, especially with respects to schools and colleges. I'm keeping a close eye on Sweden, which is not closing any businesses or schools. So far they're doing all right and are coming in under the IHME death predictions. But oddly, the model says...
"Our projections assume that Sweden will implement 3 out of 4 social distancing measures by April 19, 2020."
I dunno where they're getting the idea that Sweden will reverse course; they are already down in new cases from their highs water mark.
