Really. For damn near seventy years she has shown what a decent reserve, a stiff upper lip, and doing duty daily looks like. Yes, she is rich, but she never gave in to the temptation that riches hold (seriously, if there was evidence of her being naughty we would have all seen it or heard of it.) She has no real power other than that of an example, and she has shown an extraordinary discipline that a guardsman or a yeoman warder would envy.
I admire the old gal and wish her well, and another decade, bright and spritely, this side of the sod.

The grocery stores have added a new hoop for us all to jump through now; not only do we have to stand in line outside until they will let us in a few at a time, and then stand in line to be directed to a checkout, now they have arrows on the floor to direct the flow of traffic. Basically, each aisle is now a one-way lane, so you have to go up and down each aisle instead of going quickly to the one or 2 you may want. We're being herded like cattle through chutes, and I suppose the desired result is that we all have to look at each other's backs - you can't encounter another person face to face, because we're all going in the same direction.
I'm really damned tired of this Soviet lifestyle. Just like over there, we now spend half the day standing in lines.

Those stories make me very sad. I hope he can hang on! Now a local situation that makes me smile wickedly - Dicks Sporting Goods just added a huge new store at our mall, it replaced the Sears that closed. First Dick's Store in the region, big grand opening, high hopes.
2 weeks after the Grand Opening, the Mall locked it's doors, and hasn't reopened yet.

Now the community is young or middle age execs, commuters to Big Town, retirees, health workers... who all dine out at McD's or FancyPants.
Lots and lots of empty parking lots. Some drive-ups doing brisk business. All dine-in closed.

We have a local pizza place that makes the best pastrami and excellent Neapolitan style pizza. They never had a website until the last few weeks. Under other stuff they are selling 5lb. Bags of flour and rolls of TP. The TP is the industrial stuff in the giant rolls but it better than nothing in a pinch. The flour is the OO pizza flour but it's good for bread too.
Several of my neighbors are franchise restaurant owners and individual restaurant owners. I hope they make it. We've been getting take out about 3 times a weeks.

So I have a question that maybe an OK moron can help with. If you're driving from Wichita to Memphis, the most direct route is on the various toll roads from just north of Tulsa to NW Arkansas and then over. Those toll roads are not interstates and there are several of them. They're fairly expensive. I noticed that they seem to go through a lot of reservation territory. Are those toll roads/turnpikes Indian or reservation businesses?

Everyone (customers and staff) have been totally normal and relaxed.
Makes the "OMG we'll get through this together OMG" advertising on the radio even more annoying and jarring.
It's fun and easy to imagine ridiculous media behavior with WWII-type situations (it's been done a fair amount).
But media (and a lot of the populace) today is doing something similar with this situation. Sad!

Lafayette has some of the best restaurants for its size of any town in the country. PreJeans, out by the racetrack, is one of my all time favorites. They have a duck and andouille gumbo that makes you think you've never tasted real gumbo before. The base tastes like liquid smoke.

The "bee" is on CB, with an increase of ammo Gerry is bouncing more and more into the port. General Truscott came into our office today to see what we are doing. Somehow I don't think he was satisfied with the picture.
Apr 6.
Worked all last night so I slept all today. Arty has quieted down appreciably. Mechanical Joe cut loose again last night. Disturbed the sleep of a good many, as per usual.
Apr 7.
CB was put on the spot for sure. [Margin note: Met Gen Truscott, CG VI Corps, on this deal.] A notice was given to do something about the firing and all Div Arty Cmdrs were called in on the session. Nothing in the way of a decision made except to enlarge the CB section. We now will have 9 officers and 12 men.
Apr 8.
Maj Williamson was called back from Naples.
Pressure is really on CB now. We are making a nice set-up with two sub-sections, one for west and one for east halves of the beachhead. Bradstock, RA, has the west sector. I have the east. Major Williamson is a super coordinator.
Apr 9.
For the last few days I've been hitting from 14 to 18 hours a day. Now the section has expanded I should get some sleep. CB fire is still quite heavy.

Okay, am I the stupid one here? What the hell is the point of a model if not to project and try to predict the future? You don't need to *model* existing data - you just need to aggregate and calculate it. Models are *for* projection, within some degree of confidence that you're right. Your models could be wrong (most are - the world's a complicated place), but let's not lie about their purpose.

I first visited Moab in 1984, it has grown tremendously, not all for the better. I enjoyed the Moab Diner, one could still smoke in a diner without someone being rude and trying to enjoy a meal. I surmised Moab would get hit like a "mother of all bombs" because the whole thing is based on tourism to the Nth degree. Spectacular scenery and that region is one of my favorites to poke around in.

I was on that Atchafalaya bridge once when our side, the west bound side, was slow, but we noted absolutely no traffic at all on the east bound side. About 9 miles in, on the other side we saw a semi which jacknifed and tipped over, blocking the entire east bound span! Behind that were 15 miles of packed and parked cars, people were sitting on their hoods, and there was no place for any of them to go unless they wanted to jump off the bridge and go swimmin' with the gators.

Bad, good or indifferent, models are for projection into the future. If your model is bad, the projection is proven wrong but the model got you there. I'm not arguing for quality of the Imperial College's model or the CDC's or anyone else's. I'm arguing that this toolbox's "models shouldn't be used to project anything" is farcical.

Counterbattery was hard back then. It was either done by a sound-flash platoon or done through shellreps...which required a few of the enemy shells to land first and then some poor Schlock had to go do the measuring. Radar finally made it a heck of a lot easier.

I've gotten caught in several helluva toad strangler in western Kansas. About this time last year, I hit rain so intense that I couldn't see much beyond the hood at night. I pulled over under an overpass and waiting about an hour and when it lightened up up a bit, I made a white-knuckled run to Salina and checked into the last hotel room available. When I woke up, it was still going, but daylight makes a lot of things better.

There is also opportunity. Big cities have lots of people. You're more likely to meet people, more likely to have a diverse economy, more likely to find business, etc. The network effects in cities are very big. If you need something or someone (generically), you can probably find it.
There are benefits. I do not know that those benefits outweigh the serious problems. For some, they surely do. For some, they surely don't.

I am going to register a little exasperated sigh. I mentioned the other night that my father had to go to the hospital for third time in about two months thanks to a UTI that won't go away.
He's far too weak for us to handle him,so he had to go to a nursing home for rehab. And in the middle of this corona lockdown, with draconian rules. We get to see him for about 15 minutes, through a window, using cell phones.
They hadn't put his hearing aids in, nor even his glasses. He couldn't understand a word we said, nor could he read any notes. I am not optimistic.
And to top it all off, I have had another shingles breakout, where it like to do, right on my forehead over my right eyebrow. It's a doozy.
And that's not all. Tonight I was eating supper, and one my lower front teeth just broke right off. I thought I had swallowed it, but I found it in the plate. It's one with root canal, post, and crown. Dentist told me about 10 years ago when he did it, that it would likely fail.
So, got to get that fixed. I look like a hillybilly, a typical Trump voter, a leftist POS might say.

This is correct.
Artillery impacts and both digs a hole with an angle of impact, and the shrapnel splays out in an arc with the hole at the center. If conditions are good you can get a pretty good bearing back along the gun-target line. By doing several of these you can get a fairly accurate "fix" on the firing battery. Close enough anyway to shoot counterfire.

Re China's US T holdings. I'm trying to remember, but that is the official figure, but I was reading something about China's stealth buying. They buy through a third party, who officially holds the Ts.
That goes on a lot with foreign govts. I'll look up that up again and see.

People can get by without new iPhones for a couple of years.
Although I've noticed that Apple, in particular, has been moving a lot of production back on-shore in the last few years, and what isn't being made here is slowly moving to Taiwan. The company that's making the CPU for the current iPhone (TSMC) is Taiwan-owned, and though they do have a fab in China, their main fabs are in Taiwan. This thing is persistent. It started over a year ago. It's a long story with a lot gory details, but he would test positive for a UTI, and they'd give him a week's worth of antibiotic to clear it up. He'd go a while, then the symptoms would appear again. Positive again. This went on all last year.
Then, in Feb. it flared up bad. It became "mildy septic" and to the hospital he went. Doc there said something like that can take up to 6 weeks to clear up. He wrote him another week's worth, and referred him to the urologist. Urologist writes him another week's worth. That will clear it right up.
Well, after it ran out, it flares up again about a week later. Back to the hospital, mildly septic again. Doc there thinks his liver isn't metabolizing the antibiotic right, and prescribes something else. Urologist disagrees and gives him the same damn thing again.
And this, the third time, was after that last round ran out.

Fun fact - David Niven thought he was supposed to be the Big Star of that, was really pissed that Peter Sellers stole the show. But Blake Edwards realized the movie was looking to be pretty boring, so he encouraged Sellers to ad lib his character, and Clouseau was born.
The second movie in the series, A Shot in the Dark, did this trick one better. Blake Edwards picked up a script that was an Agatha Christie type murder-in-the manor house, that really wasn't very good. But then, rather than a serious inspector, he again got Sellers to ad-lib Clouseau, and really let it rip! The result was comedy gold!

There were video clips on Ingraham of the Chinese News Network, broadcast this afternoon and evening, that poo-poo'ed HCQ for a covad treatment. And a free excuse to sideswipe Trump, just because.
Laura has been on top of the covad issue since this started, with a barrage of world-class specialists on live. She is giving them most of the time to talk after she asks an intelligent question. They point out many, many success stories. HCQ works in many to most cases, but the statistics stay hidden.
Trump came out early consistently mentioning HCQ as a potential remedy for the suffering. CNN refused to give Trump any positive mention. Just the opposite.
Chinese News ignored it all and counter-programmed, instead. They even had the head of the CDC completely dodging the HCQ topic, like a soiboi. The CNN parrots were on full TDS and anti-reality display. In their minds, they had successfully tied HCQ to Trump, both were evil or irrelevant. The video clip was like watching an alternate reality to the one I am living in.
This evening. Day 25 of the National Shutdown.
Not only can't this kind of thing not continue to go on, but the abrupt adjustment phase could be coming sooner than we think.

My grocery stores have signs warning customers 'no mask, no entry'. One even requires customers to wear a mask and gloves to be able to enter. And that's on top of the '10 customers in the store at a time' limit. At least they have old fart shopping hour first thing after they open. But you still wait in line six feet apart unless you're there really, really early.
I honestly feel like I'm in the old Soviet Union, waiting in line, six feet apart, just to be able to go grocery shopping only to find certain shelves empty. And it's taking a long time to shop, creating more possible Chinese Crud exposure.

And it reminds me, I have a PDF of my BIL's father's pilot's log book. He flew B-26s in the ETO. I really need to look it over, and try to sync it up with readily accessible info, if any, about particular operations or milestones.
One funny thing. It was basically a civilian flight log book. Don't know why, don't know if maybe some guys were just issued those. But the headings and organization are not exactly suitable for combat missions, so there are a lot of notations and arrows and stuff like that.

My prediction is we are going to start emerging from our cocoons at the end of April since we have a treatment that appears to be working and then the argument is going to be between those who think that the whole shut-down did the trick and those who think it was overblown BS in the first place. My thoughts is that it was overblown BS but some of the shut-down measures were helpful...like washing yer damn hands.
Overall though I believe that we over-reacted and the panic that ensued has sounded the death knell for many a small and even medium sized business, and that is going to take a while to come back from. Not to mention the uptick in bankruptcy and foreclosures that is going to happen.

Neither Gabbard nor Harris bring anything to the table in terms of helping Biden win the general election. He's going to win their respective states in any case, and while he might pick up Harris to shore up his support with black voters, he's already popular with black voters.
The smart pick would be Klobuchar. The key battleground, again, is going to be the Midwest, and she's a successful politician in a purple state. The problem is Biden is going to be under a whole lot of pressure from the woke scolds to pick a minority woman for his running mate. I don't think he has the stones to tell those people to get bent.

Really. For damn near seventy years she has shown what a decent reserve, a stiff upper lip, and doing duty daily looks like. Yes, she is rich, but she never gave in to the temptation that riches hold (seriously, if there was evidence of her being naughty we would have all seen it or heard of it.) She has no real power other than that of an example, and she has shown an extraordinary discipline that a guardsman or a yeoman warder would envy.

I have to say that I agree, wholeheartedly, with that statement. To paraphrase Frank Drebbin from Police Squad: as an American, I find the concept of kings and queens and nobility in general to be silly. However,when you see a head of state like this, who is a hereditary ruler, behaving in this fashion (the word exemplary puts it well) for decade after decade after decade, AND to be a beacon to her people, and the world, a shining example of how to conduct one's self, both as a person of power and a person, it begins to make one wonder. Are some people truly chosen by God the almighty? Anointed by God for a special purpose?
In certain ways, it has also been said that the US is similarly blessed, as through the working of the Almighty we seem to be always sent the perfect man (perhaps woman someday) for the time that we are in, or crisis we are facing.
Edmund Burke probably has a fitting quote for all this - but it is martini time here in HK and thus I have more pressing matters. Perhaps one of the late night US horde might look that up?
In any event - Queen Elizabeth I, Queen Elizabeth II and Margaret Thatcher are my distinctly favorite political women of all time. Perhaps the Horde has some other preferences?

I don't know which is my favorite, though. The lady in the mask texting without gloves is good, but the woman pulling down her mask *with* her gloves is, too. Not to mention the full face shield lady without gloves. Or the half of the workers without anything. Or the complete lack of space between any of them.

Our income taxes are really screwed up. So I have worked and saved. Some stocks but mostly mutuals. So I get dividend check as well as so-called income as the mutual sometime sells stocks to rebalance.
I never touched one nickel of the money but in our social way of thinking it is call income. Not only is it income it is taxed on top of my wages and salary, sometimes at a higher marginal rate.
I get the idea our country really is not serious about people saving and investing to create a better life and economy tomorrow.

I saw yesterday that only 2 of 27 hospitals in the greater NYC area were full; all the rest had plenty of unused capacity.
This national shutdown was sold to us, partially because the Beervirus could overwhelm our hospital system and cause many to die.
This is simply not happening nearly everywhere. And we have treatments that help treat most people, HCQ and other potential options.
The point is that if we don't quickly realize that we overshot this close-down badly and need to open up the private sector immediately, the economy will never bounce back.
Another couple of weeks and a third of all independent restaurants will be gone forever.
Or it won't much matter. The USA will be in a full blown depression.

Bernie didn't quit. He said very clearly that he's still staying on primary ballots and eagerly seeking delegates. He just suspended campaigning, which he had already done anyway due to the virus. Bernie said he wants to arrive at the convention strong enough to force Biden to accept his designees for cabinet slots, stalinists all, and his policies for the platform. Most especially, Bernie wants to be able to veto Biden including capitalists in his cabinet.

IMAX movies, some which are sort of sciency and fun for the kids have been overrun with the global warming messaging. Unwatchable and I stopped going to them after an otherwise enjoyable one about mammoths turned into global warming propaganda towards the end..
