What period does this painting date to, and what time period is it about?
The painting date is often in the url, which ruins my sport because I used to like to guess the date of the drawings. This painting has a very specific title, so there's a story I don't know. It's melodramatic without looking like a Harlequin book cover like that stupid knight one from rape day. This is a pretty girl. She, the light, the wood, and the water are rendered wonderfully. There is water coming in the window which means that standing on the bed won't save her from getting wet. She should take off those heavy outergarments to help her buoyancy. That's an interesting use of light to capture the incoming water. I like the way the walls, lighter cloth, and her skin tones seem to come from the same, almost golden, color range. Of course, the damsel in distress is a babe and her bodice (if that's the word) stresses her youth and relative weakness against the power of the flood waters. It's an effective combination.
I don't know the story behind the painting. Does she die in the flooding chamber? Is she rescued? Why the hell didn't she move to a higher floor of the fortress? Posted by: JTB at April 16, 2020 09:43 AM (7EjX1) 73

Post-revolutionary Russia is depressing. Eh. I read some pre-Lenin Turgenev last year. I saw her in the hallway and asked my buddies what her name was. They told me she was way out of my league. I said hi, but never got beyond that. "25 Mhz! Staggering. Unimaginable." Remember the 50MHz 486DX? I think that clock speed was too fast for the motherboards, and they had a lot of problems. Talk about models...
Well, we weren't but it will fit here, you'll see. When I worked at a large NW-based Defense and Aerospace company the management wanted everyone upgraded to 486's or Macs. We had one old...I mean ancient IBM 286 that we kept stashed away. It had one purpose, to run one model. The model's software was too extensive to rewrite to a newer system so we kept it. Every time the IT guys would come around we'd have to hide it. We used that model for an Army program and damned if it didn't work in SPADES!!! It was a battle simulation and in every test case, we'd load it and run it and the results were astonishing. Made the company a heck of a lot of money with that too. Actually there was a vast difference between tsarist and Bolshevik oppression, especially in terms of "camps".
Exile - internal - was the typically harshest punishment meted out to political criminals. Check the histories of all the Bolsheviks whose names seem familiar. Most of them did internal exile. Which amounted to isolation, living in a small town in Siberia or the Far East. Not saying it was admirable, but completely different than labor (death, for many) camps. And even exile was "leaky". Many famous revolutionaries drifted away from their exile locations, back to society, without difficulty, especially in the latter years of the monarchy. Weimar Germany had "political police" (many European countries did). Most of the early Gestapo personnel were drawn from this group (including Mueller, the chief). But the difference between Weimar political police and the Nazi Gestapo was so great one can't really even compare them. Posted by: rhomboid at April 16, 2020 10:54 AM (El6T/) 439

>>> We had one old...I mean ancient IBM 286 that we kept stashed away. It had one purpose, to run one model. The model's software was too extensive to rewrite to a newer system so we kept it.
A defense company I worked for had a in-house modal dynamic analysis program that ran on IBM mainframes over 3270s. They never allowed anyone to rewrite as they were shutting down the mainframes and going to 'NIX systems. So they put a single 486 down in the tunnels of my building that ran a mainframe emulator that we interfaced with a 3270 emulator to run the software. It still interfaced with tape drives located somewhere in the US because no one ever rewrote the IO when computers had more than a few hundred kb available. One day I couldn't finish a simulation and when I called the techs they said it was because the robots that move the tapes forgot where origin was and the building was snowed in and no one could get to it to do the daily reset. Trump thinks my governor (Newsom) is doing a good job.
So there's that. Obviously that relates to epidemic management to date, not overall. Let's see if Don makes any snide remarks about Newsom's $$$ for illegal aliens. Probably won't. And I wonder if there isn't some technical, legal, or tax ploy the feds could pull to block this outrage.
