10 I like it. Another Autumnal piece this week, with the earth tones everywhere.

I do think the artist should have considered leaving both hands out of frame. His fingers are all out of proportion. One thing I have learned from many Art Threads: "hands are hard to depict properly."

69 I like Albrecht Durer, his distinctive AD monogram is on every one of his pieces. (upper left hand corner here) For a time, our church was putting an Albrecht Durer woodcut (of which there are a huge number) on the front of every bulletin.

Because he was producing all of his woodcuts (easy to set in a printing press) just as the Print revolution was taking off in Europe, Durer's woodprints became some of the most widely circulated pieces of art in the Reformation Age.

109 Really extraordinary for 1500. Paintings had little or no depth 100 years before.
To go from flat to this level of realism is fantastic in such a short time.

It's odd that it took 6000 years of painting to produce something like this realism then 300-400 years to disregard it and start throwing blood, feces, and froot loops at a canvas then scream "art."

Posted by: CharlieBrown'sDildo at April 17, 2020 09:39 AM (dLLD6)

This is really quite significant - as get's said here, "First!" - This work by Durer (or possibly the other, forget the dates off the top of my head) is very possibly the FIRST acknowledged self portrait in Classical Art. The Romans and Greeks never did that, and the medieval church did not allow it at all, as it was self-glorification and they felt only Saints and Holy Scenes were worthy.

Jan van Eyck might have done a self portrait a generation earlier than this, but he didn't openly identify the subject as himself. (even though it probably was) Durer was the first to openly celebrate his own self portrait.

But those doctors must have taught those kids some right and wrong, and the child expressed the angst caused by the parent, while the parents' sense of right and wrong had been overridden by their tyrannical hate. Thanks for that discussion. I also think that what you said earlier, about the children knowing stealing is a crime and it might very negatively impact their household security, was surely driving their desire to have their parents act like responsible adults.

Sobering stats from Louisiana.

Louisiana has a population of 4.7 million people. 126,586 tests have been performed.

Almost 25% of all tests conducted in the state have come back positive. So far 5% of those have already died. They stopped reporting the number of "Recovered" several days ago. About 2,000 are currently hospitalized.

I don't have the number of tests broken down by Parish but I do have the number of confirmed positives and population totals. Throughout South Louisiana confirmed positive tests are running about 1% of the population - Orleans double that - but only a tiny fraction of the state has been tested (about 2.5% of the state pop).

A date and a stupid remark to remember:

March 28: Reacting to the president's idea of quarantining the state of New York, Cuomo said, "I don't think it's legal...This would be a federal declaration of war on states."

Also Cuomo, at the same time, said he would sue Rhode Island for preventing NY asshoes from spreading germs in other states: "I think what they did is wrong, it was reactionary. I think it was illegal but we'll work it out amicably. I'm sure. No state should be using police to prohibit interstate travel in any way."

239 Durer always makes me think of his wonderful etchings and woodcuts. But looking at the Wiki page there are examples of his sketches and full paintings. The paintings are detailed, rather realistic, and use absolutley brilliant color. The depth and richness of the paint colors is sometimes breath taking and is worth the time to explore.

I need to spend more time learning about Durer's art in all media. Thanks CBD. Today's painting will lead to a lot of pleasant examination.

Aluminum foil square big enough to cover your nose and mouth. Tape across the bridge of your nose to hold it up, leave open everywhere else so you can breathe. It has to cover your nose and mouth, no requirement to seal over your face.

265 RE: Virus

Okay, I think I found something interesting. I was looking at the "curve" of new cases reported around the world and noticed a sudden and sharp jump the last two days in cases in several European countries. And in the U.S. a less pronounced uptick. At first I was confused how this was possible other than a coincidence, but then I realized we just had Easter weekend... so I theorize we've had a spike in new cases in a lot of countries because people broke their pattern of social interaction, social distancing, and got exposed over last weekend. It is around 3-4 days when people start to develop symptoms and these are all countries who've been on the downward trend.

It'll never happen here, but don't some European soccer leagues have the bottom few teams get knocked down to, essentially, minor league status and they elevate the top three minor league teams to the majors?

I've always kind of liked that idea, but it wouldn't work with football since there's no real minor league. I always thought it was an interesting model for baseball, though.

It started when two workers at a Chinese CDC lab independently isolated and experimented in vitro/vivo a SARS virus. In one of these sessions the scientists took a previously unknown variant of the SARS virus and moved it out from a BSL-4 high-containment facility into a low-safety diarrhea research lab where the two were working. Apparently, the virus inactivation process didn't work properly and both were infected at the lab and then proceeded to infect other people outside of the lab.

We're continuing to see cases climbing in GA (mostly metro Atlanta). There was a spike in some places because people attended church services, and one funeral home allowed visitation with people required to socially distance and wear masks.

Another Karen in our fish wrap said that anyone who caught the virus because of attending church services, should not be allowed hospital care.

No one here has to worry about reading too much into art works. You should have read some of the analyses I had to read. Whoo boy. RE: Virus

Okay, I think I found something interesting. I was looking at the
"curve" of new cases reported around the world and noticed a sudden and
sharp jump the last two days in cases in several European countries.
And in the U.S. a less pronounced uptick. At first I was confused how
this was possible other than a coincidence, but then I realized we just

310 Louisiana has a population of 4.7 million people. 126,586 tests have been performed.

Almost 25% of all tests conducted in the state have come back positive. So far 5% of those have already died. They stopped reporting the number of "Recovered" several days ago. About 2,000 are currently hospitalized.

From your numbers:

25% of 126586 = 31646 positive tests.

5% of 31646 = 1582 deaths

1582 deaths out 4.7 million = 0.034%

"I don't have the number of tests broken down by Parish but I do have the number of confirmed positives and population totals. Throughout South Louisiana confirmed positive tests are running about 1% of the population - Orleans double that - but only a tiny fraction of the state has been tested (about 2.5% of the state pop)."

Posted by: Brian in New Orleans at April 17, 2020 09:59 AM (TLxpZ)

Presumably, most of the people that have been tested are those showing symptoms. With test materials scarce, it would be irresponsible to waste tests on seemingly well people.

So, Louisiana may be doing worse than some other States, but the death rate due to known WuFlu, as a percentage of total population, is still a tiny number.

And certain high risk groups will be protected by herd immunity but later, much later, after living in isolation, and the rest of us in the equivalent of work release parole.

It's bad in port cities, international cities, because that's where it first comes in before spreading to the interior. New Orleans is as bad as New York because the timing coincided with Mardi Gras. 341 If the virus arrived in December, its possible that a significant number of people have already had it and recovered. So we may have a much higher number of cases (many undiscovered) and the potential of any further outbreaks is greatly diminished.

Revise the window, look at all those cases attributed to the 'bad flu season', and wonder if we really aren't further into this process than the 'experts' think we are.

Posted by: Mr. Peebles at April 17, 2020 10:27 AM (oVJmc)

342 Okay, I think I found something interesting. I was looking at the

"curve" of new cases reported around the world and noticed a sudden and

sharp jump the last two days in cases in several European countries.

And in the U.S. a less pronounced uptick. At first I was confused how

this was possible other than a coincidence, but then I realized we just

had Easter weekend... so I theorize we've had a spike in new cases in a

lot of countries because people broke their pattern of social

interaction, social distancing, and got exposed over last weekend. It

is around 3-4 days when people start to develop symptoms and these are

all countries who've been on the downward trend.

I thought Europe was post Christian. Maybe Americans are more abiding of dictates from above but that is not our history. It is likely our present, but not our history.

The only really religious Euro country I can think of off hand is Poland. Spain still has its festivals but I doubt more there are observant than people here. Maybe Italy but why is the birth rate so low?

This
is exactly what "flattening the curve" means. No change in illness
rates or fatality rates, except for allowing time for building of
hospitals (which mostly are now empty) and finding therapies (which are

And certain high risk groups will be protected

the rest of us in the equivalent of work release parole.

I once saw a sculpture of a woman turning into a tree and I thought the work was about suicide, that the artist had lost someone very dear and was trying to express her feelings about it. I based my interpretation on the Woods of the Suicides from Dante's Inferno. It turns out that the artist was an environmentalist and it was a depiction of Mother Earth. My interpretation was dead wrong.

A good relegation battle is very exciting, especially if your team manages to escape. It's crushing if your team doesn't. It's sort of like when you have three or four teams fighting for the last playoff spot.

You also don't have bottom feeders throwing games for draft picks or trading away your best players or playing rookies just for experience.

383 Presumably, most of the people that have been tested are those showing symptoms. With test materials scarce, it would be irresponsible to waste tests on seemingly well people.
_________________

And the powers-that-be aren't liking the results when they do test asymptomatic populations.

The CDC recently tested all residents of a homeless shelter in Boston. Of the 397 residents, 146 tested positive. NONE of the positives had been showing any symptoms.

The CDC was reportedly "stunned" by these test results.

Our so-called "experts" don't know shit. They don't know how many people are infected, they don't know how long they've been infected, and they don't know how to prevent infections, or if preventing infections is even a good idea (as it hinders the development of herd immunity).

Tracking the pro-abortion rhetoric against the pro-slavery rhetoric leading up to the Civil War would be really interesting.

I think they both have gone from "evil but necessary" to "moral good".

Let's just say that history isn't that kind to the "moral good" argument given towards slavery.

271 I read an essay once that argued that Durer was depicting himself as Christ in this picture.

It sure looks that way.

Posted by: Jordan61 at April 17, 2020 10:14 AM (Ez6QX)

I saw a source that states that a woodcut of this image, inscription
removed, was used as an image of Christ in several printings of the
1500's. So this likeness was seen right from the start, and obviously
Durer knew it when he painted it.

Is that a sign of someone who thinks pretty highly of himself?
Hmmmm, could be. Look at the pose in this self portrait, and compare to
the classic "Christos Pantokrater" pose from Byzantine art.

Posted by: Tom Servo at April 17, 2020 10:24 AM (V2Yro)

It was quite common for artists to use themselves as models for the likeness of Christ. It wasn't frowned upon at all. Sometimes the only live model around is yourself. Grab a mirror and go to town. If I remember correctly, it was the hand gesture that was the biggest clue that this was a Christ portrait. But unless Durer himself said so, that's not for certain. I do see the Pantokrator reference, thanks.

>>How many dead per pay is our society willing to accept versus the price paid to the economy (and how many would die in a Stone-Age Depression).

We've been confronting it since the founding of the country. Every human activity has risks and that's been true long before the CCP virus. We are always making the choice between freedom and safety even if we don't like to admit it.

What's different about this is we don't know what the threat matrix looks like and sure as hell didn't when it started hitting in December. It definitely did not help when China covered it up and refused our doctors and scientists access that continue to this day.

Given the history of communists in China and the real possibility from day 1 that this virus leaked from a bio engineering lab the only sane course would be to assume the worst. It's easy for us keyboard geniuses to pontificate what we would do or would have done but we don't hold the fate of 350 million people in our hands.

Louisiana has had 1124 deaths attributed to Kung Flu right now.

Now factor in the ethnic mix of New Orleans, and I just don't see any hair-on-fire numbers.

Because the gen pop was starting to be distanced from death at that time except for the normal "grandparents die from old age".

Medicine got better so people didn't die as young as often.
Prenatal medicine got even better so babies weren't dying.

My grandfather was born in 1910. He was accustomed to seeing death. My dad was born in 1935. Him? Not so much. Me? 1962. Other than car accidents or a suicide here and there, no. Just the normal grandparents age out.

So why did almost every other western country and beyond also close down their economies? Do you think Spain and Italy wished they had moved a little faster to close down theirs?

What if Trump had done nothing and we were seeing results like Spain is encountering, do you think he would have had to shut it down then after a lot more deaths? Do you think he would have been in better or worse position to be in place next November to help work through this?

Of course he knew what would happen. He's not stupid. And the economy was his biggest accomplishment and pride and joy and he did it anyway. Given the data available to him at the time so would've I and pretty much everyone else.

Yep, that's a fair point. But even though they were unprepared (and given the massive amounts of money we throw at agencies like the CDC to make sure we are prepared, there is no excuse for that), they still had to make decisions about what to do. And it's those early decisions that I'm cutting them slack on, because nobody knew for sure what this disease could do, the possibilities were awful, and we clearly couldn't trust a word out of the ChiComs.

But we have more information about the disease now, and we need to re-assess and re-strategize, but some people just seem to want to keep cowering in fear.

Centuries Decades ago, Milady briefly ran a little tea-room adjacent to a health food store. I washed dishes. Came the day she put the big chef's knife in the soapy water point-toward-you, and when I reached in, I got a very serious cut on my finger. Musta hit an artery; it really bled.

Health food store owner comes over and recommends pouring red pepper powder on it. We did. Bleeding stopped immediately. I expected some kind of burning, but it didn't hurt. We've kept a big bottle of cayenne with the medical kit ever since.

And set rules about putting knives in the dishwater.

death. So they surrender living for the sake of a little more safety.

Also amazing? How many snowflakes are also snowbirds.

Millenials are NOT the ones freaking the fuck out here.

618 Do we have a breakdown of people who have succumbed in New Orleans yet? I'm guessing lots of diversity in a population that is obese, likely diabetic, and eats quite a bit of fried food.

yes, this is the same tactic used against Trump in a massive PsyOp campaign that includes Brennan/Comey types and the whole CNN style attack, coordinated with the DNC and DeepState Resistance.

This began with Hillary's scripted line "deplorable and irredeemable" ... if one can't be redeemed, they must be "quarantined" ... in a psych ward, or eliminated. The globalists (e.g. Gates/Fauci/Birx WHO Global Initiative types) never stopped trying to "other-ize" any that stop their globalists ambitions.

I wonder if that isn't the most optimal option, let nature do its worst. But I'd modify that by having the Feds establish "Boomer Colonies", which would be tightly cordoned off areas where the 2-5% most vulnerable people could ride out the outbreak period over the next 6-9 months.

As of mid December the 2019 flu season had claimed 1,550 lives. Not sure what the total is now. N.O. LA resident here.

You could stockpile things like medical masks, like, you know, the stockpile that Obongo depleted, and never refilled?

90+% percent of this was a political event. The Chicom virus was just the catalyst.

no. Don't even like bourbon. I'd spend a little over $100 on scotch but not bourbon.

Posted by: banana Dream at April 17, 2020 11:15 AM (l6b3d)

I think I spent $130 on a Pappy. That was the only time I spent over a c note on a bourbon. Of course that was a song compared to the after market and states that don't control prices and distribution. Then again, in a government controlled market, you have to wait a long time. Now you can't even do that, it is done by lottery.

I could have sold that thing for a thou in NYC on Christmas. But I don't do those things.

631 My all time favorite artist! German High Renaissance painter from Nürnberg, whose house we visited when we toured there. It was damaged very little during the war and spared the utter destruction of the rest of the city, which given that his house was almost dead center, is nothing short of miraculous! Check out his other portraits, which were almost photographic in his depictions, especially the portrait of Maximillian I: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portrait_of_Emperor_Maximilian_I
