I like it. Another Autumnal piece this week, with the earth tones everywhere.
I do think the artist should have considered leaving both hands out of frame. His fingers are all out of proportion. One thing I have learned from many Art Threads: "hands are hard to depict properly." Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at April 17, 2020 09:33 AM (hYcqw) 11

I'm always impressed by the folds of fabric in a good painting, creating the illusion of depth and three dimensions. I doubt I could be taught to do that. Then I see the way he painted the hair and I have no doubts there ain't a chance on God's green Earth I could be taught to do that.

I like Albrecht Durer, his distinctive AD monogram is on every one of his pieces. (upper left hand corner here) For a time, our church was putting an Albrecht Durer woodcut (of which there are a huge number) on the front of every bulletin.
Because he was producing all of his woodcuts (easy to set in a printing press) just as the Print revolution was taking off in Europe, Durer's woodprints became some of the most widely circulated pieces of art in the Reformation Age. Posted by: Tom Servo at April 17, 2020 09:43 AM (V2Yro) 70

Really extraordinary for 1500. Paintings had little or no depth 100 years before.
To go from flat to this level of realism is fantastic in such a short time. It's odd that it took 6000 years of painting to produce something like this realism then 300-400 years to disregard it and start throwing blood, feces, and froot loops at a canvas then scream "art." Posted by: CharlieBrown'sDildo at April 17, 2020 09:39 AM (dLLD6) This is really quite significant - as get's said here, "First!" - This work by Durer (or possibly the other, forget the dates off the top of my head) is very possibly the FIRST acknowledged self portrait in Classical Art. The Romans and Greeks never did that, and the medieval church did not allow it at all, as it was self-glorification and they felt only Saints and Holy Scenes were worthy. Jan van Eyck might have done a self portrait a generation earlier than this, but he didn't openly identify the subject as himself. (even though it probably was) Durer was the first to openly celebrate his own self portrait. Posted by: Tom Servo at April 17, 2020 09:51 AM (V2Yro) 111

But those doctors must have taught those kids some right and wrong, and the child expressed the angst caused by the parent, while the parents' sense of right and wrong had been overridden by their tyrannical hate. The child expressed his cognitive dissonance, the parents had blown right through theirs, if they still had any left. Posted by: illiniwek at April 17, 2020 09:37 AM (Cus5s) Thanks for that discussion. I also think that what you said earlier, about the children knowing stealing is a crime and it might very negatively impact their household security, was surely driving their desire to have their parents act like responsible adults. Since we're past 100, and speaking of haircuts I got a text from the place I get my haircut saying that they can't cut hair on the side for risk of losing their license or face a fine. So if I knew someone who could cut my hair at their place or mine could lose their license by just trying to keep some income coming in. Cohen is a pretty scummy guy but one of the other things that came out in the footnotes is that the FBI knew in early January 2017 that the claim that Cohen went to Prague to pay Russian operatives who were supposedly working with Trump was likely Russian disinformation and they didn't tell anyone. Sobering stats from Louisiana. Louisiana has a population of 4.7 million people. 126,586 tests have been performed. Almost 25% of all tests conducted in the state have come back positive. So far 5% of those have already died. They stopped reporting the number of "Recovered" several days ago. About 2,000 are currently hospitalized. I don't have the number of tests broken down by Parish but I do have the number of confirmed positives and population totals. Throughout South Louisiana confirmed positive tests are running about 1% of the population - Orleans double that - but only a tiny fraction of the state has been tested (about 2.5% of the state pop). Durer was a Northern Renaissance artist who introduced the Italian innovations to the northern regions. This work is one of his most well-known portraits. A lot of people think this has a rather gothic feel to it. It made a cameo in "Bram Stoker's Dracula" as Dracula's portrait.

This portrait always makes me think of Vlad Dracul before he became a vampire. It is also effective. The near realism of the figure, the detail of the cloak and features, and the depth of color in his clothing and skin tones is remarkable. The direct stare at the viewer is on the verge of discomfort or confrontation.

Durer always makes me think of his wonderful etchings and woodcuts. But looking at the Wiki page there are examples of his sketches and full paintings. The paintings are detailed, rather realistic, and use absolutley brilliant color. The depth and richness of the paint colors is sometimes breath taking and is worth the time to explore.
I need to spend more time learning about Durer's art in all media. Thanks CBD. Today's painting will lead to a lot of pleasant examination. Posted by: JTB at April 17, 2020 10:10 AM (7EjX1) 240

Okay, I think I found something interesting. I was looking at the "curve" of new cases reported around the world and noticed a sudden and sharp jump the last two days in cases in several European countries. And in the U.S. a less pronounced uptick. At first I was confused how this was possible other than a coincidence, but then I realized we just had Easter weekend... so I theorize we've had a spike in new cases in a lot of countries because people broke their pattern of social interaction, social distancing, and got exposed over last weekend. In 2017, the Chinese had a similar release incident that sickened eight people and killed one. It started when two workers at a Chinese CDC lab independently isolated and experimented in vitro/vivo a SARS virus. In one of these sessions the scientists took a previously unknown variant of the SARS virus and moved it out from a BSL-4 high-containment facility into a low-safety diarrhea research lab where the two were working. Apparently, the virus inactivation process didn't work properly and both were infected at the lab and then proceeded to infect other people outside of the lab.

From your numbers: 25% of 126586 = 31646 positive tests. 5% of 31646 = 1582 deaths 1582 deaths out 4.7 million = 0.034% "I don't have the number of tests broken down by Parish but I do have the number of confirmed positives and population totals. Would they just give up their players and let the losses pile up, or would they fight harder for every win? Presumably, most of the people that have been tested are those showing symptoms. With test materials scarce, it would be irresponsible to waste tests on seemingly well people.
_________________ And the powers-that-be aren't liking the results when they do test asymptomatic populations. The CDC recently tested all residents of a homeless shelter in Boston. Of the 397 residents, 146 tested positive. NONE of the positives had been showing any symptoms. The CDC was reportedly "stunned" by these test results. Our so-called "experts" don't know shit. They don't know how many people are infected, they don't know how long they've been infected, and they don't know how to prevent infections, or if preventing infections is even a good idea (as it hinders the development of herd immunity). 271 I read an essay once that argued that Durer was depicting himself as Christ in this picture. Posted by: Kris at April 17, 2020 10:07 AM (VQp/A) It sure looks that way. Posted by: Jordan61 at April 17, 2020 10:14 AM (Ez6QX) I saw a source that states that a woodcut of this image, inscription removed, was used as an image of Christ in several printings of the 1500's. So this likeness was seen right from the start, and obviously Durer knew it when he painted it. Is that a sign of someone who thinks pretty highly of himself? Hmmmm, could be. Look at the pose in this self portrait, and compare to the classic "Christos Pantokrater" pose from Byzantine art. Posted by: Tom Servo at April 17, 2020 10:24 AM (V2Yro) It was quite common for artists to use themselves as models for the likeness of Christ. It wasn't frowned upon at all. Sometimes the only live model around is yourself. Grab a mirror and go to town. If I remember correctly, it was the hand gesture that was the biggest clue that this was a Christ portrait. But unless Durer himself said so, that's not for certain. I do see the Pantokrator reference, thanks. Posted by: Kris at April 17, 2020 10:38 AM (VQp/A) 411

>>How many dead per pay is our society willing to accept versus the price paid to the economy (and how many would die in a Stone-Age Depression). We've been confronting it since the founding of the country. Every human activity has risks and that's been true long before the CCP virus. We are always making the choice between freedom and safety even if we don't like to admit it. What's different about this is we don't know what the threat matrix looks like and sure as hell didn't when it started hitting in December. It definitely did not help when China covered it up and refused our doctors and scientists access that continue to this day. Given the history of communists in China and the real possibility from day 1 that this virus leaked from a bio engineering lab the only sane course would be to assume the worst. 379 I am on fb, unfortunately, and the page dedicated to Operation Gridlock was full of trolls who wished us death over and over and over, and also, like the Karen mentioned above, said we should not be able to use any hospitals when we get sick. It was disgusting.
Gotta love the tolerant, peace-loving, No Hate in This Home group. Also, some Sparrow Hospital nurses took a photo of the gridlock and posted that we blocked the ER entrances and disturbed the patients because you know people are dddyyyyiiinnnggg out there. However, Sparrow spokesman put out a statement that in fact the roads/entrances to the hospital were free and clear, and that ambulances had been positioned around the city to prevent any sort of blockade situation. But you know, the truth just isn't as good as a lie. Posted by: tecumsehtea at April 17, 2020 10:33 AM (ZG3zU) === Get off Fakebook Posted by: Augustine at April 17, 2020 10:40 AM (Alp4m) 418

So why did almost every other western country and beyond also close down their economies? Do you think Spain and Italy wished they had moved a little faster to close down theirs? What if Trump had done nothing and we were seeing results like Spain is encountering, do you think he would have had to shut it down then after a lot more deaths? Do you think he would have been in better or worse position to be in place next November to help work through this? Of course he knew what would happen. He's not stupid. 516 >>I don't fault Trump or the governors for the initial over-reaction.
I do. They knew, immediately, that they were caught with their pants down. They had decades and decades to prepare for such an event and they chose to divert that money to buy influence and support. ____________________ Yep, that's a fair point. But even though they were unprepared (and given the massive amounts of money we throw at agencies like the CDC to make sure we are prepared, there is no excuse for that), they still had to make decisions about what to do. And it's those early decisions that I'm cutting them slack on, because nobody knew for sure what this disease could do, the possibilities were awful, and we clearly couldn't trust a word out of the ChiComs. But we have more information about the disease now, and we need to re-assess and re-strategize, but some people just seem to want to keep cowering in fear.
