Trump Press Conference
Trump To Recommend Wearing Masks In Public?

The press conference is scheduled for 5pm but it's usually 15 or 20 minutes late to start.

As you may have heard, Trump is considering reversing the stupid prior CDC advice and recommending that people wear masks in public.

CNN claims that Trump advised people not to wear masks. Another CNN lie. Trump didn't advise people against it -- the CDC did.

It's just a naked propaganda outlet.

As for questions about how one can even get a maks:

Trump has invoked the Defense Production Act to tell 3M to stop shipping masks to Latin America and Canada and prioritize production for the US.

The Trump administration on Thursday invoked the Defense Production Act, compelling 3M to prioritize orders for desperately needed N95 respiratory masks for the US government’s national stockpile.

...

But 3M criticized a previously unreported request from the White House that it also stop sending any N95 masks to Latin America and Canada, citing “significant humanitarian implications” given the great need for them in the US and complaints from governors around the country, including New York’s Andrew Cuomo, that they wind up in bidding wars for supplies against each other and other countries.

“The Administration also requested that 3M cease exporting respirators that we currently manufacture in the United States to the Canadian and Latin American markets,” the Friday morning statement read.

“There are, however, significant humanitarian implications of ceasing respirator supplies to healthcare workers in Canada and Latin America, where we are a critical supplier of respirators,” it continued.

Apparently the humanitarian needs of their overseas clients exceed the humanitarian concerns of the United States.

Gee, I'd sure like to do more favors for multinational corporations who spit at the notion of loyalty to America. Do you think if we beg real hard, the Republican Donor Class and Coservative, Inc. would let us do more favors for transnational corporations?

But anyway, yes, it seems likely that Trump will recommend the wearing of masks in public.

In some jurisdictions, they're already making it mandatory.

I have a keep-warm Motorcycle face mask like that. I'd love to find some smaller ones - the N100 is just a bit much to be wearing around. N95's are much smaller.

I think investing in some of the fashion mask companies would be a smart move for the short term future.

However, I have heard that people walking around with N95s have been upbraided for using them when health care workers are going without. Should I get a certificate saying I donated 2/3rds of my masks?

223 Where do I get a mask?

MAKE ONE!

Go to Youtube for instructions and demonstration s.

In the mean time, use a scarf or bandanna.

The purpose is to trap your spit and saliva as you talk, sneeze, and cough.

Trapping other people's viruses before you breathe them in is secondary. But they will do that quite a bit too, and therefore reduce the number of virus particles you breathe in.

Less viruses inhaled or ingested, less likely you get sick. Some data says also you get less sick if you only get a little bit of virus versus a whole lot because some idiot coughed all over you from a foot away for ten minutes.

But it's not like you have to have somebody do it for you. It's pretty easy to follow the instructions. If you can create a suction after adjusting straps and nose pincher, you're good to go. If not, there's no difference from a regular particle mask. Air comes in from the sides.

You also need to be clean shaven. That seems obvious, but I saw plenty of soy-boys today with full beards and masks.

Now, I get that you guys need masks a little more than we do at this present moment, especially in NYC, so please take all the masks today, but can you slip us say 5%? I mean we're 10% the population of the US, give us half of what we need in recognition of our friendship and mutual aid. 380 Update on results of my tracking actual vs. projections in the IHME model (used for determining timing of shutdown).

As of yesterday daily deaths were lower than projected by 7% (162 souls using worst case), today so far lower by 22% (399 people). Of course today's data will change.

That said, the model overshoots. For the 16 states I track only NJ has a sizable difference vs. daily projections. Some states may be over/under a few by day but net/net not substantial.

For anyone that thinks I don't think even one person is "substantial" let me clarify that my intent is NOT to diminish anyone. I'm just reporting on how these models might be misleading us to making serious and long term decisions for our country. Will update again tonight.

Thanks 'Ette. I have hairbands and scarves and bandanas and could cut regular fabric down too that I collected a couple decades back when I thought I might do some sewing crafts. I've never liked to wear a bandana or a dust mask, it felt restrictive on my breathing but I can adjust if it shuts down the commie Stay at home orders.

BTW yesterday when I was out buying horse feed and a few groceries I heard on radio newsbit that the president? of the Phillipines had told LEOs to use lethal force if needed arresting anyone breaking quarantine orders. So the gestapo like freakout is happening all over the world.

Yup. They said earlier in the week, the best we could do is 100k-240k dead if everyone cooperated with the mitigation practices. Two days later Birx told us that their numbers showed that we weren't following the mitigation practices adequately.

There are therefore going to be a minimum of a quarter million dead from kung flu.

When do these 15 minute, super-easy tests finally get here?

Because I am very confident I got this Beervirus in early December, being exposed to dozens of Chinese-Chinese in the Seattle area on a daily basis for months.

Not those 3rd generation Americans that went to Bellevue HS and their parents are worth 7 or 8 figures from their home appreciating over the decades, but the ones that just got off the plane, and among the 3 of them, only 1 speaks any English, and it is classroom perfect, without slang.

This nasty bug has been amongst us for perhaps 6 months now.

If I (and millions of fellow citizens who want to get back to normal) could take the test and find out we came out OK, this stuff could be over immediately.

And Abbott Labs will exceed their projected profitability for the rest of the year.

448 244 N-95 has to be fitted
________________________

Posted by: Horus Hearsay at April 03, 2020 05:40 PM (DB16e)

449 What type of mask do I need?[/b[

https://bit.ly/2UZ7ea1

FIRST you need to know what size of particle you want to filter. Of course, you do not want to filter out oxygen, because, you know, you need to breathe. Oxygen is about 0.5 nanometers (0.5 x 10-9 meters). We call this nm for short. A virus ranges from 20-200 nm (about 100-1,000 times bigger than oxygen). A bacteria may be around 1,000-2,000 nm (about 10,000 - 20,000 times bigger than oxygen).

The influenza virus is 170 nm. A mold spore is about 25,000 nm. Radioactive fallout is about 5,000 nm. The typical respiratory DROPLET is > 10,000 nm and falls directly to the ground.

The typical respiratory AEROSOL is

AAAACHOOOOO! Yes, you are surrounded with respiratory aerosol, average size 5,000 nm.

SECOND you need to know what your mask is built for.

An organic vapor respirator mask is meant to filter out gases as well as particles. If you had a jar of mentholatum, for example, you will know that it is very strong smelling. It also is about 2 nm in size. The organic vapor respirator protects you from chemical fumes and particulate matter. You would not smell the mentholatum.

An N95 mask will filter out 95% of particles that are 300 nm or smaller

An N100 mask will filter out 99.97% of particles that are 300 nm or smaller

BUT WAIT! YOU SAID A VIRUS IS ONLY 170 nm! True. You caught that. However, viral particles do not fly naked through the air. They do not even travel in skin tight spandex outfits through the air. They travel in respiratory aerosols. The average aerosol particle is 5,000 nm. Therefore, these masks will stop virus that is traveling in aerosols. Therefore an N95-100 should stop viral loaded aerosol from entering your nose and mouth.

THIRD you need to know the difference between a surgical mask and a respirator.

A surgical mask is worn by surgeons during an operation. The reason they wear it is so the SURGEON's respiratory aerosols will not drop into the patient's open wound. A surgical mask is MOST appropriate to be worn TO PROTECT OTHERS from your own infection. ARE YOU SICK? Put on a surgical mask. Yes, we do wear surgical masks in the clinic sometimes, but it is more effective for filtering the DROPLETS not the aerosols. It is also good to prevent splashes of yucky fluids into the mouth. It also helps remind you not to touch your face. So yes, it does work somewhat, but primarily it will reduce the "load" of virus that you get if someone sneezes in your face, which they literally do all the time in most doctor's offices. A surgical mask has a lot of loose, floppy edges that do not seal.

A respirator is more closely fitted to the face. In fact, technically, they should SEAL to the face. The seal of a respirator is tested during a "fit test." The OSHA folks require fit testing for employees likely to be subject to aerosolized hazards -- for example, people who remove asbestos from buildings. HOWEVER, the "respirators" you buy at home depot are not exactly respirators, because they are not exactly fit to your face. You are going to be sucking some air around the edges. But it is a lot better than a "surgical mask" and it filters smaller aerosolized particles.

So basically, you want an N95 or N100 respirator mask, but it won't actually be a respirator mask, if that makes sense.

Coronavirus: Trudeau says Canada will offer more help to China if needed
BY MIA RABSON THE CANADIAN PRESS
Posted February 9, 2020 8:29 am
Updated February 9, 2020 8:47 pm

Canada is standing by in case China asks for more help as it grapples with the novel coronavirus outbreak that originated there, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Sunday, noting that the virus continues to pose little threat in this country.

Trudeau said Canada has already responded to China's request for medical equipment, including face masks and other protective gear, as the infection rate and death toll from the virus continues to climb.

"We are going to continue to work with them to ensure that they have the resources to contain this virus," he told a news conference near the end of his three-day visit to Ethiopia.

The mask expiration dates are 5 years, but they keep old masks in the stockpile, in case of a pandemic.

The part where it explicitly says:

"Because of this, use of expired respirators could be prioritized for situations where HCP are NOT exposed to pathogens, such as training and fit testing."

Right before it goes on to say:

"healthcare facilities should retain all N95 respirators during the early phases of this outbreak."

That means that they throw expired ones away, and once they decide the sh*t has hit the fan they stop throwing them away, apparently for fit testing and training.

Who doesn't throw away old masks? They have expiration dates that we were just discussing, and I'm guessing OSHA frowns upon expired respirators in the workplace.

But where social distancing is easy, they aren't required.

Those who don't learn history are doomed to repeat it, or all this has happened before and it will happen again.

Face masks became a big thing in the US during the 1918 Spanish Flu pandemic. Wearing them was made mandatory under penalty of arrest and fine in many jurisdictions all over the country. People not wearing them were arrested and fined, with most fines being donated to the Red Cross. Jail time was a few days or so.

There was even a mask chic that developed, with womyns trying to make them stylish.

Tobacco companies even started making and giving out masks with a little flap to allow the user to smoke while wearing the mask.

Theaters and public gathers made wearing them mandatory inside, and anyone who didn't show up with one could buy a mask or not come in.

After it was over, analysis concluded that the masks were almost useless in preventing the spread of the flu.

This largely has to do with OSHA requirements for PPE.

If you buy a hardhat it has an expiration date on it.

If you bring an expired one to a job site, even if it's new in box, that has an active job safety inspector, he will either make you throw it away, take possession of it or eject you from the job site until you come back with a non-expired hat.

The same goes for PPE masks, eye protection, even high visibility vests have an expiration date.

563 From the link I posted earlier:

Can I reuse that mask? I just paid $10 for it, and Home Depot only had one left.

I think the answer is... PROBABLY YES. In fact, I am going to recommend the following:

1 --- mist face and goggles lightly with 120 proof vodka from a very fine mister bottle. Okay, ethanol. I prefer that over rubbing alcohol because it is safer if you happen to mist some of it into your mouth. And sometimes vodka does end up getting into your mouth.

2 --- remove goggles without touching the front. Place face up on a flat surface

3 --- Do the same for the mask

4 --- Sterilize at one inch with a UV-C wand sterilizer at around 250 nm wavelength, roughly 2 minutes. (you can get one on Amazon). I feel that this will allow repeated use, especially if you alternate days with a second mask that you allow to sit for 24 hours, preferably in a fairly warm place, or even dry out in a 120 degree oven. (virus on surfaces do not like hot temperatures, and the warm oven will dry out the moisture from your hot and steamy breath.)

Note there's nobody left alive who remembers the Spanish Flu. 102 years ago. You'd have to around 110 to have any real memory of it.

That's the trouble. Memory of epidemics and pandemics is gone from the collective memory. Modern medicine and science has just about eliminated them from modern life in First World countries.

And so we've forgotten and become complacent. We even had bubonic plague outbreaks in big cities. Last one was LA in the '30s. And then there was the scourge of polio epidemics, last big one being around the early '50s.

SF had a big bubonic plague outbreak in the early 1900s. They put a cordon sanitaire around Chinatown, where it was the worst.

These things are all gone from our collective memory. I remember reading predictions that they would come back, we only get a temporary reprieve. Life, including pathogens, finds a way. That's what it does.

Agreed with the sole exception of the National Post, the one Canadian paper that isn't solely useful only to line bird cages.

734 Note there's nobody left alive who remembers the
Spanish Flu. 102 years ago. You'd have to around 110 to have any real
memory of it.

That's the trouble. Memory of epidemics and pandemics is gone
from the collective memory. Modern medicine and science has just about
eliminated them from modern life in First World countries.

And so we've forgotten and become complacent. We even had bubonic
plague outbreaks in big cities. Last one was LA in the '30s. And then
there was the scourge of polio epidemics, last big one being around the
early '50s.

SF had a big bubonic plague outbreak in the early 1900s. They put
a cordon sanitaire around Chinatown, where it was the worst.

These things are all gone from our collective memory. I remember
reading predictions that they would come back, we only get a temporary
reprieve. Life, including pathogens, finds a way. That's what it does.

Everyone picks a set period like a year, or two years. They test the product for that length of time plus a little more. If it is still good, they say enough, take off 10-25%, and slap an expiration date on it.

Testing it until it goes bad is expensive. And what if they get it wrong?

811 One must listen to Mike Roman, Chairman and CEO of 3M, dance as fast as he can on CNBC over this issue. This is what happens when you put a marketing type in charge of corporate strategy. You get deflection, straw men, question-begging, non sequiturs and answers to questions nobody asked. No has ever said that 3M was not ramping up production here and abroad. The issue was why 3M would sell only to its authorized distributors and why 3M could not force those authorized distributors to sell to American clients during a crisis. Instead, those distributors were refusing to sell to state authorities and American medical care providers, sometimes stiffing them, and were selling to foreign distributors, speculators and end users at wildly inflated prices, sometimes for cash. I tell you right now that Peter Navarro is looking for a way to fuck this company hard when the crisis is over, as well he should.
