To Help Poor and Working Families, Nancy Pelosi Pushes SALT Tax Break for Millionaires In Blue States... Including Herself

Party of the 1%.

The SALT deduction lets very wealth taxpayers in high tax blue states, and blue cities, to deduct the money their liberal governments take from them from their federal taxable income.

So New York City and San Francisco can jack up tax rates, but their wealthy inhabitants won't mind too much, because at least they can avoid paying some taxes to the federal government.

Trump (and Congress) limited how much one could deduct from one's federal taxable income.

Blue state leftists -- who constantly cry about the need to raise taxes while conveniently crafting themselves shelters from the high taxes they demand -- are aghast that they would actually be expected to pay the high federal tax rates they champion.

And Nancy Pelosi is riding to their rescue.

Can't wait to hear her explain how a tax sop that benefits only the blue state millionaires concentrated around NYC, LA, SF, and DC will really "help the working people in the heartlands."

So is Nancy Pelosi officially embracing trickle-down economics?

Is anyone in the media going to ask her?

Spoiler alert: No, no one in the media is going to ask her, including reporters from FoxNews, because FoxNews is itself a tool of the neoliberal blue state millionaire establishment.

They're just in the dirty business of selling products to a deplorable red state audience.

The Murdoch Boyz -- and Paul Ryan -- want their Pelosi Stimulus Check.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., is pushing for a new stimulus bill that would roll back the state and local tax deduction (SALT) cap, a proposal that would predominantly help wealthy individuals -- including most residents in Pelosi's district and perhaps even Pelosi herself.

A 2019 report from the Joint Committee on Taxation projected that of those who would face lower tax liability from the elimination of the SALT cap -- which only affects those who itemize tax deductions -- 94 percent earn at least $100,000. The government would lose out on $77.4 billion in tax dollars, with more than half of that amount being saved by taxpayers earning $1 million or more. Those earning more than $200,000 would reap most of the balance.

California's 12th congressional district, which Pelosi represents, is among the wealthiest in the U.S., with a median income of $113,919, according to census data. The average household income is $168,456 -- meaning most residents would benefit from any significant cut to SALT.

Pelosi and her husband have a property tax liability of approximately $198,337.62 considering their two homes, a winery and two commercial properties, public records show, indicating that the couple could reap substantial benefits in the event of a full SALT repeal.

Fuck these people.

Meanwhile, Chuck Schumer is playing further partisan games, demanding things Trump is already doing and demanding silly thing so that when Trump refuses, he can say, "Oh, that's why 1000 more people died!"

Trump repsonded Trumpishly:

We have given New York many things, including hospitals, medical centers, medical supplies, record number of ventilators, and more. You should have had New York much better prepared than you did, and as Dr. Fauci and Dr. Birx said yesterday, New York was very late in its fight against the virus. As you are aware, the federal government is merely a back-up for state governments. Unfortunately, your state needed more back-up than others.

If you spent less time on a ridiculous impeachment hoax... and instead focused on helping the people of New York, then New York would not have been so completely unprepared for the "invisible enemy." No wonder AOC and others are thinking about running against you in the upcoming primary. If they did, they would likely win.

Fortunately, we have been working with your state and city governments, Governor Andrew Cuomo and Mayor Bill DiBlasio. You have been missing in action, except when it comes to the "press."

This is a line I want Trump to use on Schumer. I offer it gratis.

it was a subsidy to their state/local coffers, paid for by those in low-tax states via THEIR higher federal tax payments.

well yes-- because it's blue states and cities that tax at high rates, but then their millionaires turn around and reduce their federal taxes by the amount they spent on state and city taxes. (Well, not the full amount, like half.)

This is effectively subsidizing blue cities and blue states to raise their local taxes high, and then expect the rest of America to make up for the shortfall.

This only affects millionaires in blue states and blue cities, no one else. Not anyone making less than $100,000, and not anyone in a lower tax state/city.

This is for Blue State/Blue City millionaires ONLY.

Not technically, but in effect. You used to be able to deduct your state from your federal. That meant California could tax your income at 9-11% and the feds would get less. Trump capped the amount you could deduct, so now blue staters are actually paying higher taxes. Nancy wants the old system back so that California can tax with impunity.

A command decision was made to not flood Guam or some other pacific island with 5000 sailors. The admirals and likely SecDef decided it was better to leave them aboard. Capt didn't agree with that decision because orangemanbad, so he went to the enemy press.

If he agrees to a national lockdown, they'll change it to something else .

He should have kept the letter quiet.

That said, the first thing they should have done after tying up and going to shore power was to evacuate as many people off the ship as possible, and asking the base to supply tents and bedding to allow the remaining skeleton crew to spread out using the flight deck, hangar decks and the pierside.

The planes should have been flown off before entering port and the first people off the boat should have been all the air wing personnel, straight to quarantine. After they are found clean, they can man other carries or land bases.

Evacuate everyone and rotate from quarantine the reactor on duty crew and the guards for the special weapons and classified equipment. Make sure they have masks and shower and change as they come off duty. Give the ship a few days for the virus to deplete, then start a stem to stern decontamination.

After quarantines, everyone can reboard and CM.

278 "We have given New York many things, including hospitals, medical centers, medical supplies, record number of ventilators, and more..."

I like this but I'd tweak it a bit more. I'd suggest adding, "The Federal Government has been corralling the contributions of the so many other states to provide extra assistance to New York while sacrificing their own in order to help a currently more critical need of a fellow state. That these other states have provided so much is a tribute to their ongoing patriotism and they will do what they can to mitigate this national event, etc."

The point is to recognize and remind that the Federal government produces nothing. It is the States and Citizens (taxpayers and contributors) who give it all and not the D.C. leviathan parasite. This is a teachable moment to the entire country on civics.

Actually, it's not just the very wealthy who would benefit from this. Middle class family here in MD; we have to forego just over 5K of state and local taxes on our Itemized Deductions. Our highest tax bracket (Fed) is 22% -- so that's an additional $1100 that we pay in taxes. That is money that would be much better spent by me - as opposed to the gubmint.

So we said, nah, we'll just go get a new one it's ten years old anyway. Went to a couple of different places today. In every one, we were told by the salesmen that they could only deliver the refrigerator to a garage or front porch. New CDC regulations prohibited them from going into the house to set it up or remove the old refrigerator. Posted by: Minnfidel at April 02, 2020 07:30 PM (TNy/K)

Look at a coverage map for the major carriers, and the big blank areas are mainly the Cascade mountain range in WA.

However, until recently, most of eastern washington was only good with ATT or Verizon, Sprint and TMobile were dogs in much of the eastern side of the state, even small towns.

TMobile fixed that last year with massive new coverage. And their prices are lower than the other 2 big carriers. Probably why they are growing.

505 You salty guys probably know but I didn't until recently when a retired Navy officer told. The Navy is known as the "Big Blue Dick" and when a perceived injustice occurs it is referred to as being "fucked by the Big Blue Dick."

Nope. I worked in an office building at the edge of a city of 10,000, 30 miles from Minneapolis Minnesota on a Freeway. We even had a 100 meter radio tower with radio and cell phone repeaters on our property.

No ones cell phones worked in the buildings. They would work in the open if you found the right spots.

My house on a hill 5 miles away is hit and miss too.

It would be worse if we don't do it.

508 SALT likely cost Pelosi $60000 in federal taxes she never paid before.

Pelosi doesn't pay her fair share until Trump comes along.

So she wins the Speakership and has been gunning for him ever since. It's about money.

510 An important point about the SALT deduction limitation:
If your taxes are more than the $10,000 deduction limit, that doesn't necessarily mean that you will pay more in taxes than before the tax reform law. Your federal tax rate went down under the tax reform bill, and so the tax paid on a given amount of taxable income went down. Only if your SALT taxes were well above $10,000, would you pay a higher total amount in taxes.

Suppose you had a net taxable income of $100, 000. You would be paying nearly $3000 less in taxes now than in 2017 and before, because most of your income would be taxed at 3% less.

Now suppose you have $15,000 in SALT, and can only deduct $10,000 of that. You will have $5000 more in taxable income. But unless your total taxable income is more than $160,000 ($321,000 for joint filing), your rate for $5000 is less than 24%, which would mean an additional $1200 in taxes.

So you have saved ~$3000 by the lower rates, but paid ~$1200 more because of the SALT limit. You still have SAVED ~$1800.

It is very important to see both parts of the tax change!

511 #500 until those islands are reduced they are offshore bastions of surface to air missiles/aircraft that soak up attacks that could have been directed at their mainland.

They are pieces of the puzzle.

I live in a very small town in Fairfield County, CT - so small that we don't have any supermarkets, retail stores, etc. The cell service by my house is nonexistent. I've learned to love that.

Take away my Wi-Fi, however...

513 There are lots of oil and other resources in the areas claimed by the Chinese thanks to those little islands. Also lots of fishing rights too.

This is more of a resource rights grab by China, than a military fortress line.

A big part of their political justification for the islands, is that they defend the fishing fleets against the rapacious piratical foreigners. They also harass airliners and commercial shipping to enforce their claims.

515 I live way upstate in NY, and get practically nothing for the property taxes we pay, but on the other hand or burden is manageable, compared to tax levels on Long Island or Westchester County.

The SALT deductibility repeal already came up for a House vote, and AOC voted against it, for all the reasons cited in this blog entry. Even a stopped clock . . .

516 Every officer should have resigned his commission and walked away from the Fleet and his career when a president was elected who they did not approve of? And who would have been in charge then?

This is a damned easy thing to call for when your rank begins with an E.

517 The point of the Marines on those little Islands vs when the Japanese did it and we just employed Island hopping leaving them to starve is this.
In WWII a bypassed Japanese held Island could do little to affect a ship or aircraft that didn't pass within shell range. These days, marines can impact sea born vessels and aircraft well over the horizon. So bypassing them as we did the Japanese isn't nearly so likely to lead to success.

It is the philosophy of school of piranha vs a shark.

519 "And not just any captain. A captain commanding one of a handful of the most powerful warships in the world."
There's nothing like announcing over open comms that a line ship of the Navy, on duty, may be less than 100% ready.
Very poor judgement.
