Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Republican Senator Rick Scott of Florida: We Need Congressional Investigations Into Why the WHO -- Which the US is Funding -- Is Acting as a Pass-Through For Propaganda Written by the Communist Chinese Intelligence ServicesSen. Rick Scott on Tuesday called for a congressional investigation into the World Health Organization, suggesting the U.S. should cut off its funding for "helping Communist China cover up" the full extent of the coronavirus pandemic. The Florida Republican, a noted China hawk, has long raised concerns about the WHO’s relationship with Beijing, which has undercounted the number of coronavirus cases in the country. ... "We know Communist China is lying about how many cases and deaths they have, what they knew and when they knew it -- and the WHO never bothered to investigate further,” Scott added. "Their inaction cost lives." He said the WHO "willfully parroted propaganda" from China’s Communist Party, and he called for hearings and a full investigation when Congress returns to Washington next month.Among the lies the WHO has pushed for their Chinese Communist patrons: That the coronavirus could only be transmitted from animal (bat) to human, not from human to human, so there was no need to limit travel to and from China. In fact, Communist China already knew the virus could pass with epidemic speed from human to human. In fact, the Chinese government knew at that point to could be transmitted between humans and they had hundreds of cases even though they were reporting only 41 officially on Jan. 11, according to the South China Morning Post. Chinese doctors and labs had identified the virus at least by December and there are now reports that there may even have been cases in November. But China tried to shut down the information from getting out. From NY Post:What is WHO's answer? They won't respond. Are they merely China's dupes, or are they China's coconspirators? I think they won't answer either way because they don't even want to admit their patron lied in the first place. Legal Insurrection has a good roundup of China's aggressive lies on behalf of its pet plague. One of China's propaganda pushes is to claim that the country does not need to change its food and health practices, despite the fact that one new plague after another keeps coming out of the country. They just don't want to change -- and so any suggestion that they should is, of course... racist! From the Spectator: Meanwhile, several articles have decried the problematic ways in which Chinese eating and hygiene habits have been discussed in light of the outbreak, especially because they may lead to stereotyping Chinese people as a whole for being barbaric and uncivilized. These stereotypes, they fear, will only end up fueling xenophobia and racism. The temptation here is to avoid falling into the trap of cultural relativism. It’s perfectly appropriate to criticize China’s rampant consumption of exotic animals, lack of hygiene standards and otherwise risky behavior that puts people at risk for zoonotic infections. Until these entrenched behaviors based on cultural or magical beliefs are divorced from Chinese culture, wet wildlife markets will linger as time-bombs ready to set off the next pandemic, which in a globalized age is proving only too easy to do. We already know that more than 75 percent of emerging diseases originate in animals and that in the last century, at least 10 infectious diseases jumped from animals to people. China should be aghast at its role setting off the global domino effect at Wuhan Seafood Market in late 2019. After countless infections and death, the obliteration of trillions of dollars and the radical retooling of modern life as we know it, the least China could do is introduce higher food safety regulations, eradicate all wet markets and ban the wildlife trade, once and for all.The Center for Security Policy is updating its timeline of China's aggressive propaganda efforts. 60 Minutes did a great piece on China's active efforts to propagandize and propagate their plague. Wait, did I say 60 Minutes? Major error on my part -- the American media is in bed with China and would never dare report on China's misbehavior. I meant 60 Minutes Australia. Don't expect Anderson Cooper to pick up this reporting thread any time soon! Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

I saw a clip from a WHO conference last week where someone from the press asked about Taiwan and the response was, "we've already discussed China."
This needs to be one prong of the high-risk approach to dealing with China. Demand that these organizations censure and delegitimize China. If they don't, we need to walk out the door and take our money with us and get to work on our allies doing the same. WHO won't step up? Ditch it. Make a new one. UN won't remove them from the Security Council? Ditch it. WTO won't enforce property rights? Ditch it. Replace it with as many bilateral agreements as needed. And so on. The Chinese Government's actions have been astoundingly horrible throughout the process. I cannot imagine what they are achieving, or why they think there will not be consequences for all this when the virus has run its course.
That the virus originated in China is forgivable. That they handled it so badly initially is rather less so, and that, after having shared it with the rest of the world, they have attempted to blame the US, sold defective or even possibly sabotaged products to those trying to deal with THEIR virus, all the while crying "racist" to any criticism, is as close to a an act of war as one can get without actually shooting. Yesterday someone said that you have to permit dissent, otherwise you end up with a system like China's, unable to rectify mistakes. But the problem with that whole viewpoint is that we have nothing BUT dissent, propagated by a small number of New York urban elites who hate Christianity and the protection it has under the First Amendment.
Well guess what, guys? Churches and synagogues are shut down, and I'm certain de Blahsio wouldn't show his ass to mosques that way. So if the First Amendment is a dead letter, let the media have as many protections as religion. As in, none. Nationalize some of them and actually inform the people. See who dissents when it might permanently send them to the unemployment line. Or stop being surprised as society burns. Posted by: trev006 at April 01, 2020 01:34 PM (0HpOW) 86

Since we're throwing out ideas, here are my thoughts on dealing with China as we come out of this:
- Incentivize reindustrialization. Give all US companies that repatriate industrial capacity a tax exemption on repatriated capital. Increase their duration for depreciation by 50%. - Start isolating China on trade. Start with a blanked 25% tariff on all China-produced goods. Ramp it up to 200% over the next 5-7 years. This may not bring industry home, but it will take it out of China. - Start pressuring them out of international organizations or leaving those organizations. - Embargo all technology exports to China. Provide favorable tax and trade positions to allies to get them to go along with it. - Restrict immigration from China by 100%. Any Chinese person who wants to move here requires individual congressional sponsorship - like getting into a military academy. - Forbid any Chinese national from US government employment, directly or indirectly (e.g., contractors) - Cancel all visas issued to Chinese nationals and repatriate them. I am not convinced that this was deliberate. Regardless of whether it was deliberate or accidental, though, China does need to be dealt with. I hope that this does happen (won't happen no matter what without a second Trump administration, though even with that it might not), but it will happen after our economy gets moving again. Aside from glassing Beijing - which is probably not a good approach - there is little we can do right now. As we start to come out of it, though, there is a *lot* we can do and I hope we do it.

That is the sole point. Posted by: 18-1 at April 01, 2020 01:32 PM (WdocV) +++++++++++ It is a major effect. It is not the point. The point is that we want the best people here. If you're exceptional - like "one of the best in the world" exceptional - we want you. It has morphed into "run of the mill and cheap and also captive" and has gone insane. This is a *very* easy problem to fix. If H1Bs are that good, then pay them. People who are actually great earn high. For any H1B you employ, the H1B must earn at least 125% of the median salary for the position in your company. That would put an end to this crap toot sweet. Had a fair amount of direct experience with UN specialized agencies - but WHO is one level up, more of a policy outfit I'm talking UNHCR, UNICEF, WFP - agencies that implement and deliver, in the field.
They tend to be very good - and also (unless things have changed a lot, unlikely) almost reflagged US humanitarian operations. We provide the bulk of the $, and in every really difficult situation, *most* of the political will, and/or *all* of the logistical/practical muscle (looking at you, US military). Of course they've all had their scandals. And richest of all, they (UNHCR the worst) have some jaw-dropping anti-American attitudes on the part of their *European* personnel (Third Worlders generally quite good and pro-US). It's quite the experience to travel to Geneva specifically to meet with a UNHCR official - carrying with you, literally, an instrument for $millions in aid for a critical refugee program then under way - and have the French guy stand you up for the meeting. Really happened. There are layers here. The specialized agencies doing the real work tend to be pretty good, US-dominated, and in many cases do outstanding work (as do the NGOs they use as implementing partners). Further you move up the chain, the more the picture becomes the nightmare of corruption and anti-Americanism many here are familiar with. Posted by: rhomboid at April 01, 2020 01:44 PM (El6T/) 167
92 This is what the infrastructure bill should be:
1) x-year federal tax holiday for all companies building new steel mills, pharma labs, textile mills, appliance factoruies etc. et al. 2) x-year shuttering of all federal agencies (except the DoD and postal service. 3) heavy penalties for companies off-shoring or staying off shore. Watch the market and American economy take off. Posted by: J.J. Sefton at April 01, 2020 01:28 PM (pS94+) Instead of heavy penalties for companies off-shoring, why not make an environment where off-shoring would be the stupidest move any company could make? Institute the Fair Tax Plan where there is no corporate tax. No withholding for employees. Where U.S. companies enjoy a competitive advantage over foreign competitors by being able to export with no taxes due here. How about an infrastructure bill that builds 500 identical reactors that supply nearly free power to the local grids, eliminating the major cost for base industries like steel, aluminum, copper etc.? Institute the Fair Tax Plan where there is no corporate tax.
Little known fact: companies do not really pay taxes. They collect them from their customers, and turn them over to the government. Why? Because only people can pay taxes. Consider if instead of contributing cash to the government so it can hire labor, people were required to provide their labor themselves (e.g., on the Great North American Dignity Canal). Could a corporation do that? No, of course not. A corporation is a legal construct that exists only on paper. If the government raises corporate taxes, corporations raise their prices. If they can't do that, eventually they go under. Posted by: Deplorable Jay Guevara at April 01, 2020 01:50 PM (YqDXo) 212

What is particularly awful with this WuFlu thing, for us, is that our adult kids, one hard left, the other left but not avidly, are going with the DMC line, that is clearly developing and is going to get repeated with a drumbeat louder that Hitler ever could command with the Nazi buildup in the 1930s, that . . .
TRUMP KNEW ABOUT THIS WAY BEFORE AND DID NOTHING AND HAS BLOOD ON HIS HANDS FOR EVERY SINGLE DEATH! AND FOR THEM LOSING THEIR JOBS! LOSING THEM! The two families are way far away, so we talk by phone and do face time, but we now sense a rift between us and the hard left adult kid that may alienate us forever. Before all this, OrangeManBad was just OrangeManBad because racist, or homophobic, or he lies about everything, or whatever, but he wasn't a KILLER OF THEIR FRIENDS. Now it has gotten personal, and we, as known Trump supporters, have become persona non grata for supporting a killer. Ms K and I are horrified by this and saddened beyone belief. The price of globalism is the inability to respond proportionally to what was a straight-up biological assault as a result of, at a minimum, gross recklessness. China could kill infinitely more Americans in a matter of hours today simply by shutting down the supply chain for pharmaceuticals and medical devices. And they do have the absolute ability to do this. It's a bitter lesson takeaway from a failed ideology. Posted by: Trump poisoned my cat at April 01, 2020 02:07 PM (puu6v) 330

Samsung makes a good TV, because there are no moving parts to fail.
Anything that Samsung makes that involves moving parts of any kind, has the "fail" built-in at the factory. In an LG fridge, the ice-augur that moves the cubes to the dispenser, has metal parts where it counts most, specifically in the drive gears. Samsung uses plastic there, and it's a cheap, brittle sort in the bargain. If they had used a GFRP, such as in a polymer pistol frame, they'd have been OK. But no. They insist on their parts being a pretty, semi-transparent blue-hued showpiece, with the half-life of a moth on meth. And for Samsung, FORGET about finding replacement parts. They amend the "Model Number" by an odd digit or letter, SEVERAL times through each production run. Result? The MQ-21972-c fridge uses an entirely different circuit board than the MQ-21972-f, even though they're visually and functionally identical. For sure. Given that elective procedures are cancelled, people who might normally go to the ER for something non-life threatening (e.g. people who use it as primary care), or the walk-in clinics, the emptiness makes sense. The overall principle remains: a net recipient of taxes is not a net payer of taxes. Posted by: Deplorable Jay Guevara at April 01, 2020 02:12 PM (YqDXo) Yes. That being said, when on fiat currency, determining where money 'comes' from is sort of moot. Only on a fixed supply does it matter. The rest is just making sure people don't bid things up when they have more money. The key to understanding why government employees still count as taxpayers is that what governments care about is GDP which is just money moving. If you can pay someone to spend money, and you can print that money (and you can prevent people from bidding up) you can raise GDP. Indeed, paying people to spend money also raises the taxes you take in, and when you're printing the money, it all is coming from the government anyway. So most businesses, in the strictest sense, probably aren't full taxpayers either. Recessions used to be called 'a shortage of money' i.e. people lacked money to buy things. With fiat currency, you can't run out of money (well, not totally true.) The question about taxes is really what is being produced? From this standpoint, it's both certain that not all businesses really are productive and not all government employees are non-productive. Tax just acts as a way to manage the flow of money into a government body regardless of the source. The problem arises where you're using taxes to fund too much and the math stops working (i.e. spend 40k on gov't employee, only get back 10k, repeat...); money printer then go brrrrrrrrrr. ----- Depends on the price elasticity of the product. If Im CEO of company A and my target margin is X.... and all of a sudden I dont have to pay a 20% tax rate.... guess where my prices go to capture business from my competitors..... down 20% to my target margin of X. Conversely.... if my tax rate goes up 5% ..... I build that into my COGS (cost of goods sold) and pass that on to my customer. I do this in real life now. Im not paying taxes, licensing fee, fuel surcharges, permit fees, ongoing ed fees..... all that get rolled into my overhead and YOU pay it. For all their faults, Best Buy is still a fairly good TV farm. Wide array of products, and their staff gets some good training as to what's different between 'em, what's "Good/Better/Best" in the lineup, etc. Oddly, being in the same corporate family as Wal-Mart, Sam's Club carries a pretty good range of reputable, brand name TVs. The Keynesian fears the saver because the saver decides how his money is invested. The dollars in saving account allow newlyweds to buy house.
Posted by: rhennigantx at April 01, 2020 02:26 PM (JFO2v) Yep. I've heard people with a mortgage say were paying people with savings and loans accounts. Of course, but for savers, they wouldn't have a mortgage. Or a house. It allows people to invest in Amazon or local business instead of Solyndra. Yep, and therein lies the problem. When the government allocates resources, that allocation is not a strictly economic decision any more, but also a political one. In fact, largely a political one. Which is why such allocations generally fail dismally. Why do "green" or "socially responsible" mutual funds perform badly? Because their investments are not predicated solely on economic bases, but rather on ideological ones as well, which necessarily degrades the quality of the decision-making. Why? Because if the investment were economically sound, the ideological consideration would be superfluous. I would presume the government would be aware of the concept of zero and thus would not raise taxes to 100%, but, sure man, "corporations don't pay taxes" they just lobby constantly for corporate tax rate reductions to help out their customers. True heroes those corporations.
Posted by: Frankovich's Monster at April 01, 2020 02:35 PM (dYe5S) "I would presume the government would be aware ..." I see a problem right there. Corporations lobby to lower their taxes because they know they wouldn't have to lower their prices, as consumers are accustomed to paying $X for their product. So lower taxes would mean higher profit margins. I don't think corporations are heroes by any means. They're tax collectors for the government. That's all. Consider the entire transaction chain: consumer pays for product (covering all of company's cost of goods, including taxes), corporation pays taxes to government. So eliminating the middle man - who collects $X in taxes and then pays $X to the government - consumers are paying taxes to the government. If you write a check to the IRS, does the IRS agent get the money? No. He's the middle man. The government gets the money. You pay, the government gets the cash. yes, and I'm sure, maybe months before that, Trump iirc, was pushing being prepared for emergencies, or disruptions. Which seemed like sound advice, but many wondered why he was pushing it at that time. It seems possible our spies may have caught chatter of a bio attack, or other such thing. Or maybe Trump was advised that the pressure on China could be met with some form of retaliation .. idk Posted by: illiniwek at April 01, 2020 02:44 PM (Cus5s) 489

It's not just the virus stuff with the WHO; they also declared the active ingredient in Roundup weed killer, glyphosate, to be a likely carcinogen, thereby encouraging lawsuits. This in spite of the fact that a world-wide study published in 2000 found no hazardous effects to animals. I once held a pesticide applicators license, and have applied hundreds of gallons of the stuff. Glyphosate is now off-patent, and the Chinese are manufacturing it by the tankerload (the Indians too), but lawsuits against Monsanto and other manufacturers here in the US may force farmers to go without, thereby hurting our crop production. America's agriculture industry is a form of power; who benefits by damage to that power? The Chinese....
