Tucker Carlson: The Government Needs to Stop Lying to Us About Coronavirus

He means, specifically, the stories the government put out that "masks don't help you avoid transmitting, or even contracting, the virus."

That was a lie. The lie was told in order to reduce demand on masks, so that health workers -- who do of course have a more pressing need for them -- could get them.

It was a lie, and now people still believe the lie and are still saying "masks don't help."

And can you blame them? The people whose guidances and orders we are supposed to follow without question were just telling us the lie that masks don't work, in order to free up supply for high-risk personnel.

17 Yes, they've been regularly lying this whole time.

Another lie (well, by omission) ... that things are going to re-open any time soon.

The whole idea of "flattening the curve" is to spread out peak infections so it doesn't' all happen at once and the hospitals don't get flooded.

So right now the first peak is predicted to be 4/15.

The plan is to then relax things a little bit, so more people get sick. Then back in quarantine.

So on and so forth until we have a vaccine or everyone has enough antibodies where it's no big deal.

The original studies on this were saying 18 months. I don't know if that's changed or not, but...

However, the gloves have to be removed using your wrists rubbing them off, or you just transfer whatever you came in contact with on your hands. And yes, you should dispose of them after every use.

A local nurse said she doesn't use the gloves when she goes to the grocery store, or a mask. She sanitizes her hands before leaving her car, and carries sanitizing wipes in her purse. When she returns to her car, she wipes the door handle and when she's home, wipes down her groceries and counter.

When I had to wear respirators on occasion as a contractor, I failed to receive my certificate in putting on a respirator. So I guess I can't wear one?

(I'm being sarcastic, but you definitely don't need to be a "professional" to figure out how to use a respirator, surgical mask, or n95 mask. The "attach to your face" part is painfully simple.)

Also, if everyone wore masks in public and we disinfected surfaces religiously, no viruses would ever spread. It's silly to say that everyone wearing masks is a bad idea.

The wrist thing is silly.

Use weak hand to pull glove off dominant hand, still hold onto glove. Grab weak hand glove on inside of wrist, pull it where it turns inside-out, containing the other glove that you were holding. Dispose of properly.

You never touch any contact surface that way, the inside is out, and all contaminated surfaces are contained within.

They've done studies on this with flu transmission. viruses themselves are ludicrously tiny and can get through anything short of an n95 mask. However, most transmission is aerosol, as in, mixed in with peoples saliva (either exhaling or coughing or sneezing). Those droplets are huge compared to the actual viruses (which are in the droplets).

That's why the gov't is now saying any cloth barrier can be useful.

116 And can you blame them? The people whose guidances and orders we are supposed to follow without question were just telling us the lie that masks don't work, in order to free up supply for high-risk personnel.
++++++++++++++++
Masks aren't perfect, but based on my reading they help in two ways:
1) Apparently even poor masks (like those made of cotton that you sew up at home) aren't ineffective at stopping viral transmission. They aren't great and definitely inferior to the real thing, but they do some.
2) They help you not touch your face (or, rather, those sensitive mucus membranes that are peppered around your face).

But there are alternatives to just saying, "you don't need it, you reactionary now close your wallet and get out of the way." I dig that medical workers need them, and so do folks like construction workers who need them for non-medical PPE when sanding, spraying, etc. But encouraging people to wear them (even if supplies are being restricted to supply vital industries), providing guidance on how to make good ones, etc. would be a net benefit for two big reasons.

The first is that they are apparently *not* ineffective (and "not perfect" and "not effective at all" are very different things). The second is that by doing what they did when they declared that masks are useless and stupid for the plebes while they are out and about, they make people *less* inclined to wear them if they have or can get them or to make their own masks to wear - no one wants to look stupid or invite some busybody to lace into them at the grocery store.

a) yes you can get viruses through your eyes. I wear glasses most days (sometimes contacts), so my eyes are already pretty covered. But, sure, feel free to add safety glasses to your mask and you're in a great position to go.

and, more importantly

b) the wearing masks is more about YOU not sneezing in my eyeballs. If you're wearing a mask, your germs will stay away from my eyeballs in the first place.

It seems that the guidance is still pretty uniform that masks are most effective when you are in intimate contact/distance with an infected for 20-30 minutes or more.

Of course a mask would help on the off chance that there is a sneezer spewing greater than six feet from you and you catch a stray aerosolized glob of virus. It would help more if it was the sneezer was wearing one, which seems fairly consistent since the beginning.

The biggest benefit - with the presumed primary vector being hand to mouth/nose/eyes from an infected surface - is keeping your booger hooks out of your nose and mouth and off your face.

Right now, the WHO sitreps show Africa with a tiny fraction of a fraction of the world's cases, and that only because of S.Africa and Algeria. Subsaharan Africa looks virtually immune to this disease. "unprecedented" indeed, in a continent where a half-million die every year from malaria, not to mention scores of other diseases you can't pronounce or never heard of.

At the end of the day, you place it in the bag and drop it in a bin for sterilization and re-use. This was implemented today. Yesterday we were told that if everyone couldn't get masks, then no one was allowed to wear masks (unless indicated). So every day is a new day around he'ah.

There is a degree of truth in all of this.

222 Further research suggests that this wasn't a lie. These idiots legitimately believe that masks won't help ordinary people, based on some shoddy studies.

https://tinyurl.com/r4cscpz

"And during the 2015 MERS epidemic, NPR said South Koreans were wrong to wear masks:

Masks can be helpful for protecting health workers from a variety of infectious diseases, including MERS...

But either type of mask is less likely to do much good for the average person on the street... Wearing a mask might make people feel better. After all, MERS has killed about a third of the people known to be infected.

But there are no good studies looking at how well these masks prevent MERS transmission out in the community, says Geeta Sood, an infectious disease specialist at Johns Hopkins University. "On the street or the subway, for MERS specifically, they're probably not effective," she says. One problem is that the masks are loose fitting, and a lot of tiny airborne particles can get in around the sides of the masks."

The incompetence -- 'evidence based' even! -- runs deep.

Testing is centered on people with symptoms arriving at hospitals, and then hospitals deciding to test them.

The data sets are no where near random and should not really be used to draw conclusions on the virus's rates at this point.

We need randomized samples to figure that out, and no one seems interested in doing that.

---
Well, I think the idea is that you need to give people a false sense of security to offset the false sense of threat that the media has given them in order to get them to leave their homes and go to work.

This of course ignores the fact that the only reason we're not leaving our homes and going to work is that the tyrants have shut everything down. So maybe this is to give *them* a false sense of security/political cover

230 Can I jury-rig the mask to fit better?

YES you can mess with the mask to make it seal better. You can use gel designed to make snorkeling gear seal, or you can try Vaseline around the edges. I would not suggest double stick tape unless you want to peel your face off at the end of the day. And Vaseline might be kind of greasy. But there are a number of products out there that could enhance the seal of your "respirator."

So, let's say that the mask is sealed. Will this protect me fully?

NO. No, it will not. Because your eyeballs are out there just waiting to be sprayed with respiratory aerosol. Viruses in the eyeballs can travel down into the nose through those pesky tear duct things. That is why a NON VENTED goggle can be used to protect your eyes. Again, you can use one of those little snorkeling mask sealants to get a nice seal without putting too much suction on your face. But your eyeballs do not constantly SUCK IN AIR like your nose and mouth, so realistically, you are less likely to get into a problem from the eyes, but it is certainly a concern.

So I can buy a mask and goggles and I am good to go, right?

Well, not exactly. Those pricey masks are supposed to be single use, rated for about 8 hours. If you think about it, the OUTSIDE OF THE MASK AND GOGGLES will be CONTAMINATED after use. And the corona virus can live on solid surfaces for like 9 days or something ridiculous like that. When you take them off, the EXTERIOR SURFACE will have VIRUS that you might TOUCH while removing your personal protective equipment (PPE). So use care and then wash up after touching them. DO NOT TOUCH YOUR FACE!

Will it prevent everything? No. But, they're saying that was a BIG reason Korea got ahead of this thing.
Posted by: Sponge at March 31, 2020 03:50 PM (Zz0t1)

The typical blue paper masks with white earloops work to prevent breathing in some viruses and bacteria and prevents one from breathing them out UNTIL the mask becomes damp. Which is does within a short time, depending on how quickly one is breathing or if you are talking a lot.

Once they are damp, it opens up the "pores" of the paper, allowing contaminates through.

Next on the list is the formed paper type of masks that have a metal band across the nose that allows you to adjust it and has an elastic band to go around your head and over your ears. The kind you often see sold at hardware stores to do house demos, etc.

Work better, IMO, and last longer. But have the same limitations about getting wet. And they do, especially if you are working and sweating.

N 95 masks have a better fit mechanism and filter smaller aerosols. They require putting on a bit differently than surgical masks to get a tight seal.
Have two straps to hold them to your face and have the ability to push a seal around your mouth and nose that cheap paper masks don't have.
N 95's are actually the best type of mask to avoid breathing in any kind of aerosolized virus or bacteria.

None of the above masks work for oil based types of aerosols such as paint, etc. which require a full on respirator.

241 Based on data with huge biases.

Testing is centered on people with symptoms arriving at hospitals, and then hospitals deciding to test them.

The data sets are no where near random and should not really be used to draw conclusions on the virus's rates at this point.

We need randomized samples to figure that out, and no one seems interested in doing that.

I learned this when I became a certified asbestos remover a few years back.
Posted by: NeverNeverTrumper at March 31, 2020 04:00 PM (0jZvB)

Ace was joking. Germ theory is about as solid of medical science as you can find.

As for asbestos -- yes, asbestos particles are very small and can make it through normal surgical masks, which is why you wear particulate filtering respirators when working with it.

Viruses are also tiny too.

Droplets of saliva from sneezing, coughing, and breathing are, my comparison, huge, and can be stopped by normal cloth barriers.

The virus is mostly transmitted through those saliva particles, which are now trapped in your mask since you couldnt sneeze them out in to someone else's eyeballs, or the air they are breathing.

270 WHAT IS THE THREAT? Do I really need a mask?

If you can stay about 6 feet away from other people, and constantly avoid touching your eyes and nose, then no, you do not need a mask. If you live out in the suburbs, feel free to walk your dog and stay away from your neighbors without a mask. No risk.

The bigger risk in this case is SURFACES. Getting those viruses onto your hands, and then touching your face is an absolute no-no. On average, people will touch their faces 4 times per hour without even realizing it. That is nearly 100 face rubs PER DAY! JUST STOP IT! Well, you can't just stop it, because you don't typically think about it. This is where ordinary glasses and a light surgical mask would be helpful. It will keep you from rubbing your eyes and nose after touching that doorknob or grocery cart.

So if you are not going out, not going into a crowd, living in the suburbs where you can stay 6 feet away from others, you do not need a mask or goggles. If you worry about visiting grandma who lives alone out in the country, YOU ARE THE ONE who should wear a mask to visit her. In this case, a surgical mask is fine, just on the off chance that you are incubating a virus and don't know it yet.

If you work with other people, going to crowded places, live in a crowded city, etcetera, I think that the mask and goggle idea is a reasonable precaution, and so is putting alcohol on literally everything.

If you work in a school, at a doctor's office, in a hospital, in a store with lots of customers, etcetera, then this is when you should think about whether or not you will need it.

Most comprehensive and based on raw statistics. Guessing the rate is really 1.5% from there and then also adding on the overstatement due to only testing people with significant symptoms seems premature. Note also that China is lying about deaths here, and Italy was not counting non-hospital deaths (reflected in these statistics, I believe.)

In the long term, they should resolve to around the 1%-3% range due to the reason you stated plus the fact that full recoveries generally take longer than deaths.

308 Only gas mask type apparatus with an uninterrupted seal can keep a virus from transmitting.

That's strictly true, but according to the data even just putting a T-shirt or bandana over your nose/mouth cuts transmission in half, and that rate gets even better with an N95 mask.

Thankfully, MD has started to taper off in new cases, which means we can go back to normal sooner.

The 51 y.o. son of dear friends of ours who live in TX, came down with a "respiratory ailment" in February. It got bad, and he was placed in a medically induced coma. He never came out of it and passed away on Saturday.

His 50 y.o. wife is still in the same hospital in ICU with pneumonia.

This is in Ft. Lauderdale.

316 Well, not exactly. DO NOT TOUCH YOUR FACE!

https://bit.ly/2xCrczu
Posted by: Clyde Shelton at March 31, 2020 04:06 PM (Do5/p)

Unless you have access to a contamination box and can send your N95's to Batelle's sterilization gizmo, you need to properly take off the mask every time you use it and properly dispose of it. Preferably wearing gloves that you peel off and dispose of without touching the outside surfaces.

Healthcare workers go through a lot of training and retraining regarding proper decontamination of items and disposal. The average person on the street is not going to realize what they need to do .

For example, Mr. Jen brought home peppers from the grocery store. He carefully washed them off then proceeded to pick up the same bag he had brought them home in to put them back in for the fridge. Until I stopped him and pointed out he was putting the clean peppers back in the contaminated bag he had pulled them out of.

He's not stupid, he just didn't think about it.

317 Tucker misunderstood the intent, which is not that masks don't necessarily prevent transmission of COVID-19, but of OTHER diseases that health professionals need masks to not spread to thier vulnerable patients, and others.

If there is a mask shortage, health professionals will spread other diseases.

It has nothing to do with COVID-19.

324 I read that the n95 has three micron holes and viruses are about 1 micron. So they can't be 100% effective, especially for the air gaps which are millimeters or more bigger on the mask to face interface.

But masks will cut down on a good percentage of the virus. From years of doing smoke and effluent filter designs, I'd estimate it will knock down 85% of a given moles of virus in a given volume. It would be a very complex calculation with many assumptions. However, I've made a career on gut intuition and have been very close to the correct answers.
Bottom line is masks is better than no masks for both the non infected getting the virus and the infected for spreading the virus.

331 the masks work for stopping/reducing the odds of catching the "germs", but probably even better for those that have the germs, to reduce their spread to other people/surfaces.

someone yesterday linked to studies comparing surgical to N-95, and they were both the same. They tested nurses catching the flu, iirc. They found a way to "test" without masks ... I forget details, but parents with kids or something. Without masks was like 25% caught it, with masks was like 5-10% caught it. So they are not perfect ... but pretty good, at preventing infection if you have no infection.

338 It seems to me, that a mask that would filter out virus spores wouldn't pass enough fucking air to keep you alive. Virus spores are incredibly miniscule, so the pores in the mask would have to be smaller still. So the surface area needed to let enough air in to breath would far exceed the practical size of the masks people wear.

I hear that even surgical masks are 100% effective, because virus size doesn't matter in transmission unless the virus is fully airborne like Measles. What matters is droplet size, and studies suggest that surgical masks actually block the real particles involved in transmitting the virus, which are relatively large droplets.

I linked to some stuff yesterday about this, trials concerning other coronaviruses (so a virus that is similar in size and transmission means) comparing n95 to surgical masks and finding them both effective and relatively identical.

350 Some advice.

Wear latex or nitrile gloves if you want. You can wash them, just like you eash your hands, except with the gloves on your hands.

Cloth masks. Be careful removing them. Wash your hands after you remove them. Wash the cloth masks in HOT WATER, with bleach if possible.

Don't be afraid to change cloth masks if you are out and about. Make sure you don't contaminate yourself with the mask. Put it in a plastic bag, and wash your hands.

Wash your hands!

Can't wash your hands? Use Clorox wipes, or baby wipes, or sanitizer gel.

374 It's probably not even worthwhile to make the effort, but there is no scientific evidence that COVID-19 is more "sticky" than other viruses. A study was published in the NEJM, the world's top medical journal, which concluded that it "sticks" or survives for up to 72 hours on hard surfaces like steel and plastic and 24 hours on cardboard. Thinking it was a SARS virus, the authors compared it with another SARS coronavirus and found that they had the same "stickability." Common viruses, however, can last 4-5 days on hard surfaces and up to 9 under certain condisions.

We were always told that the mask worked and that front line medical people needed them more than us.

That said, lots of people wear masks. We have a large asian population in Seattle and lots of people were wearing masks on buses and in Costco long before any of this started.

Correct. The worldmeter data is pretty explicit, it is 18%-19% of closed cases, which means that at present that percentage of cases died, and the other percentage recovered. The overstatement we expect is from 1. real cases which were never confirmed, 2. late discharges for recovery lagging behind dying.

I don't think the overstatement can be more than 10x, an order of magnitude, but given that statistics across the board are being collected differently, it's hard to know.

Posted by: ace at March 31, 2020 04:03 PM (PbpT7)

Ace,

I'd disagree with the second half of this. it's resolving out to about 1% based on confirmed cases vs deaths. If you factor in, admittedly just an estimate, the fact that of those tested, less than 20% of those with some sort of symptoms are actually contracting it, and the number who are asymptomatic or "just flu" symptoms they treat themselves, i think it's safer to say it's going to end up in the .1-.3% mortality over all.

now how that interacts with more infectious, i have a hard time determining.

no, no, no. The fatality rate just among confirmed cases is very high. The 1% number is a guess of what the actual fatality rate would be if you assume infection rates 10-20 times greater than the number of people confirmed to have it

What I'm trying to say is: We're already taking into account the "discount" you're looking for.

Posted by: ace at March 31, 2020 04:23 PM (PbpT7)

402 And again, "flu" is a word we use to describe certain upper or lower resiratory symptoms caused by lots of viruses. It is not a specific disease. The vast majority of people who contract COVID-19 are either asymptomatic or have relatively mild symptoms. For them, it is "the flu."

404 I read somewhere the virus was killed in direct sunlight UV rays in 2 seconds.

Vitamin D helps prevent infection, also gained by sun exposure.

Posted by: Sponge at March 31, 2020 04:24 PM (Zz0t1)

405 I still think that as testing becomes widespread, that 1% number is going to drop significantly. Assuming 1% is where people have come up with the 2 million to 3 million deaths here in America, and I do not think we're going to see that. 0.1% is where you get 200,000 to 300,000 deaths, spread out over the time it takes for 100% of the population to be exposed.

Posted by: Tom Servo at March 31, 2020 04:10 PM

Yeah, I'm not quite sure how anyone is determining anything with regards to the mortality of this virus. Since we have no idea how many cases there are.

The only cases count that we have is based on people who have been tested. But since we know for a fact that not everyone who has COVID-19 has been tested for it, how can we know what the mortality rate is?

We can't. It's all a guess based on very limited testing.

Keep in mind that the CDC guesstimates the number of influenza cases each year and gives a range. And that is because not everyone who contracts influenza every year is sick enough to have to go to a doctor.

Their range for '19 - '20 influenza hospitalizations? 400,000 - 730,000.

Their range for illnesses (cases): 38,000,000 - 54,000,000

That's a pretty wide range.

54 million is 17% of the American population.

The sad thing is, if you told the average American right now that 38,000,000 Americans were going to get COVID-19, they would probably freak out, not even realizing that that is the low estimate for influenza cases this year.

thank you, and that points out the math error in that estimation, as it is used for predictions.. Until we get to the point that we can test *everyone* in an area, without any regard to whether they are showing any symptoms, we have no idea how many people have been exposed and are (and will remain) asymptomatic. We also can never know how many people have been exposed, but who will never test positive and never show any symptoms.

If there are significant amounts of people in those two categories (they happen in all other diseases), then the % number is misleading, the way we're using it. As a percentage of those who show symptoms, it's valid, but we can't yet extrapolate from that to total death projections.

417 Masks are bullshit. Do they protect a small percentage of wearers from the virus? Maybe, but I used to work for a large company manufacturing these masks, the key method of filtration is extruded polypropylene that is electrostatically charged. This charge dissipates over time once the mask is put on and is not meant for repeated use. Of course, as soon as you touch the outside of it and then rub your eyes, the point of wearing a mask is meaningless. If you walk through a path where someone has sneezed, you're more likely to adsorb something through your eyes anyway.

Also once you touch the outside of the mask and then forget to wash your hands you just exposed yourself anyway. This is America. I refuse to wear a fucking mask. If you live in a fucking homeless tent city in San Francisco then sure, a mask is probably beneficial. Other than that, it's mostly a waste of time.

A, I know you are rumored to be in the general New-York-esque region, so from your vantage point (a la the famous New Yorker cover) everything might seem NY-centric, and thus the epidemic is spiralling out of control...but as revealed at this veyr good site which is reliably tracking all the stats day-by-day...

https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/country/us/

...the crisis int he US is now entirely focused on New York, specifically on Brooklyn and Queens. As that link above show, over HALF of all current infections and over HALF of all currently daily deaths int he entire USA are now happening in New York, and (as other maps have shown) specifically those two boroughs.

But outside that very limited area, for most of the US the "curve" has already flattened and the slope is going down and the epidemic is petering out. Even here in California, which previous was a hotspot, our new infections and deaths are starting to dwindle, and are now 10% of what Brooklyn has. The same is true for most of the US, aside from a very few hotspots mostly in urban centers.

In other words:For 49 states, the epidemic is receding. That;s why most people are shrugging it of.

I have been trained in the correct use of a wide range of PPE over the decades (I remember the creation of OSHA ferchrissakes!) and I knew that using a mask, properly fitted, was effective. End of story.

I only use N95 masks for the most trivial of hazards, by the way.
If I really don't want to breathe something, I go N100. The disposables are pricey, so mostly that means a modern silicone half mask with appropriate filters ... personally I prefer 3M because they seem to fit my face just slightly better. ymmv, it's like a pistol, try 'em until you find one that fits best.

431 In everyday life, masks probably work best/better to prevent you from transmitting to others rather than as personal protection. I mean, surgeons don't wear surgical masks when they're doing brain surgery because they're afraid they're going to catch a tumor from the patient.

That's the way Japanese people also tended to wear them (before this started at least). Say you had a cold/cough, but not bad enough to stay home, you wore a mask when you went out on the street/subway as courtesy to others.

But the WHO/CDC line that "Masks won't do anything to keep you from getting Wuhan'ed" was always clearly nonsense. Maybe it won't stop all possible routes of transmission or be a 100% effective, but you better believe they'd want to wear one if they had to tour a flu ward in Milan.

We don't know that... not really. We still don't have a firm grasp of how many people have it. Anecdotally, I know of several people in the nyc area with symptoms. Only one was actually tested, she tested positive and was told to stay home unless her symptoms got worse.

Two other friends were told that they won't get tested unless their symptoms get worse, and to basically just chill out at home and ride it out. (All of these people in their late 20's / early 30's.)

I *suspect* we will find that the death rate is actually lower then we think.

That being said, we don't have enough data to know one way or another, so we probably should err on the side of "it could be as high as 1-2%, and upwards of 100% of people could get infected" until we have a chance to do some widespread randomized testing.

Yeah this kind of pisses me off. If you call it the flu colloquially, there's always some pissant pedant who purses their lips and exclaims that IT IS NOT THE FLU!!!!

No, its not influenza, but as a people we basically use flu and cold interchangeably, and the term is wider than is being insisted upon here. Normally I am very insistent upon clear and accurate language, but "flu" has been so broadly used for over a century now that it doesn't really have a particular exact meaning in common use.

Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at March 31, 2020 04:27 PM (KZzsI)

439 413 thank you, and that points out the math error in that estimation, as it is used for predictions..

442 I completely agree with the idea that the danger of this flu was overstated -- and possibly for malicious political reasons, too.

But some of you seem to be arguing that there is NO danger, or barely any danger, from this disease.

One person actually said it's time to let the "old and infirm" just fucking die. Let God sort 'em out.

I understand that when you're talking about shutting down the economy, and plunging people into joblessness and poverty, then you certainly can start to talk about the price of saving each life.

But it that's a lot different than saying: "I don't care if this trivial, short-term measure of wearing a mask in public can reduce the death rate, I'm just not going to do it, because fuck the libs."

This is sort of irrelevant. The 'death rate' of any disease is always affected by the demographics. If our population is more old people, all diseases are more deadly. There is no ideal death rate number you can refer to.

Anyway, check the death rate of seasonal flu on those populations and compare. That's the closest you can get to an apples-to-apples.

Italy is 8.15 per 100,000 or 0.8 percent. That is _BELOW_ the USA. However, that relies on this site's statistics being valid, your mileage may vary:

Based on CDC official numbers of confirmed cases and deaths the mortality rate has been between 1.6 and 1.9 percent (today's number), which is high. So I'm not following how 10 let alone 20 times the number of confirmed cases would be higher than .19, a scary enough number.

468 right now we are trying to flatten the curve ... to spread out the demand on care facilities for the (maybe) 20% that need care.

BUT if we find the HCQ cocktail is a 96% cure if used immediately after testing (maybe in a Zelenko protocol, only for over 60 and/or otherwise compromised) ... then we want to maybe steepen the curve to get the herd immunity much sooner.

We could give (in stages) give all the healthy people a small dose, minimal amount to build antibodies, and have them self isolate two weeks. Those that get advanced problems then get the cocktail. Other advanced cases never overwhelm the system, because the cocktail works in hours or a few days.

So why don't they give us day by day updates on how effective the HCQ cocktail really is? France has .. and it is marvelous.

HCQ and a few others I guess, are the only things attacking the virus itself ... (stopping it from replicating in the cell). We have old protocol for treating symptoms, but that makes for lots of suffering and long term damage. We need to cut it off at the knees ... not just flatten the curve and treat symptoms because that is the protocol we have.

It is. And not to channel Ben Shapiro, this isn't binary. There is a word of difference between "not totally effective" and "totally ineffective." If there are steps I can take - even if only partially effective - I will do so to get the world moving again. If the government were to come out and state, "We need to bend the curve. A great way to bend the curve is to wear a facemask. We're not saying it's foolproof, but it's decent. Wear a mask and get back to work," then I am on board. I'm probably on board anyway. I'm not gonna wear a mask at home, but when I go out? Sure.

If wearing masks and keeping my hands clean or wearing gloves is what it takes to "bend the curve" and get back to work, then I am more than happy to do so.

Check my post above. Some weird ass studies supposedly showed that when ordinary people wear masks they are not effective at all but when "medical professionals" do, they are. Yet, those studies didn't check to see *if the people were really wearing the masks* -- which it seems only 1/5 of the study group did?

That's just not true. Louisiana is currently going off and will be a big hot spot. They just found 28 people in Austin, Texas who were part of a group of 90 that went to Mexico for Spring Break and brought it back with them. They are currently testing the other 62 and trying to track down all the people the 90 came in contact with after returning.

These kinds of things are continuing to happen around the country. It's not just in NY.

Well, at the current moment, New York is only only "hot" hot spot. And a bit of Jersey. Yes, a handful of other states -- in particular, Louisiana, Michigan, Georgia and Texas, maybe a couple others have the potential to erupt into hotspots, but aren't really there (yet, or ever maybe).

They count up the excess deaths, and then do surveys to see what percentage of population got the flu. This is estimate but pretty close.

It does not rely on people showing up at hospital.

So, hypothetically, so guy dies of an until then unknown virus, the fatality rate would be 1/1 %, or 100%.

But if you say that ten other people have because a computer model said so, but you have no idea who they are, the rate would be 10%?
No, you are just making shit up, if one wanted to be derogatory. Let me polish that turd - well credentialed individuals estimate that the fatality rate is 10%.

There should not be one rule for the whole country ... not even for whole states. But they seem to be telling us it won't stop until enough have been exposed to develop herd immunity.

558 >>Look at the numbers on that stats - -NY's numbers absolutely dwarf every other state by many orders of magnitude. Texas, the state you cite, had just 3% the number of deaths that NY had yesterday.

Absolutely. I don't think anyone is arguing that NY doesn't have the lion's share of the cases today.

But it is not true that other states won't see a lot more case or that we are at anywhere close to the projected peak of this outbreak which will hit different states at different times.

I keep hearing that Washington has relatively few cases now. That's true. Its also true that they are projected to hit their peak in a couple weeks and they are currently turning an event center into a hospital to handle the surge just as they did with the Javits Center, the tents and the Navy hospital ship.

The virus doesn't give a shit about state lines. It will spread. If we do nothing we get a result like Italy. If we take strong steps to mitigate we will keep the rates of infection and death much lower.

And then we can have people say "See, it wasn't that big a deal after all and we didn't need to do anything!"

Because that makes total sense.

561 From the Seattle Times:

Hospitalizations for patients with symptoms of COVID-19-like illnesses in Washington declined last week by more than 20%, a hopeful sign for the region and a nation gripped by the coronavirus pandemic.

The state Department of Health (DOH) survey, covering the seven-day period that ended Saturday, tallied 193 admissions of patients with symptoms of fever, cough and shortness of breath, down from 251 the previous week. This also marks the end of a monthlong rise in these admissions, which dates back to the last week in February, when only 61 hospitalizations of COVID-19-like illness were counted in Washington state.

I knew that people would be getting upset about this, which is why a couple weeks ago I went ahead and aggravated some by trying to explain what a devastating economic impact this is going to have, 2 - 3 times WORSE than the Great Depression. And we are *not* going to bounce back very quickly, that's just wishful thinking.

Economically, this is an Extinction Level Event. Treasury Sec. Mnuchin thinks we buy ourselves about 8 weeks of survival for every $2 Trillion, I think it's less than that, we need about $2 Trillion per month to keep going once we hit 50% unemployment. That's why we all say this shutdown cannot go on - but since it IS going on, we have no choice but to create money like it literally has never been created before. It's not a good solution, it is admittedly a BAD solution - but our only other choice is the Death of our Economy, the Collapse of our Society, and almost certainly the breakup and end of this Country. We don't do this, We Lose Everything. That's how it is, plain and simple.

will there be long term problems? Oh hell yes! But you don't worry about the problems you might have 5 years from now when you're scheduled to be executed tomorrow.

More viruses in you means more viruses to replicate. Viral load builds faster. So symptoms trigger earlier and give the immune system less time to react and build antibodies
So you may still get sick but immune system has a better chance at defence.

627 Curious, what percentage of respiratory infections are caught via contact with eyes versus the mouth? Could be that goggles are WAY more effective than masks.

628 Because I'm a kidney patient who does home dialysis, I've known all along that along with proper hygiene, masks DO work. I get a box or two of 50 Level 2 masks every month when I order supplies.

629 Jerome Adams repeated the same lie again this morning on Fox Friends. He covered his lies in loads of excuses about not even medical students following proper procedures and N95s requiring a personalized fit. What hooey and garbage. These are disposable masks. They were created for industrial and construction work. This is the Surgeon General of the United States telling bald-faced, common-sense-defying lies to the public.

But given the public's misbehavior in panic buying and hoarding and refusing to follow distancing guidelines and stay at home orders, I'm not sure we can completely blame the liars for telling their lies.

Start buying and wearing masks.

630 Personally I find that masks work great.

631 Tom Servo,

"I still think that as testing becomes widespread, that 1% number is going to drop significantly."

I'm way late here, but I'm not so sure. Our testing has really ramped up in the last two weeks, and fatalities are more than keeping up.

Of two countries who tested very widely from the very beginning, South Korea is over 1.5% now (up from 0.5% for the first several weeks), and Germany topped 1% today before dipping (barely) back under. They were at 0.1% for so long that articles were written about why they were so low.

632 Also it is brand new and different. No one is immune, because no one has been exposed to this virus before.

Posted by: rd at March 31, 2020 04:08 PM

WRONG!

Some of a population will naturally be immune to any particular pathogen, even something completely new, because their genetics make them immune for whatever reason.

633 Unless you are talking hazmat suits, medical masks are meant to protect the patient, not the medical staff, for the same reason they wear surgical gowns, gloves, etc.

According to the FDA, the N95 mask doesn't provide the protection people think it provided. I'd cut and paste, but when I tried, the post was rejected. Google fda n95 respirators.

I think that if you can breath, you are not protected against airborne viruses.

634 Tucker is generous, "we all know masks work."

Not my experience at all, especially 2+ weeks ago. The vast majority of folks I've talked to believe the exact opposite, "No, I was reading, experts say they don't work unless you're sick."

635 In epidemiology class, the first case we studied was that plague in London that was finally traced back to the well pumps.

I forget the plague. Bubonic? African-American?

Cholera

636 Ace, it seems to me that finding that middle ground requires our confirming info on how the disease affects different age groups.

Everything I have heard, while I was hearing anything about it, was that it was deadly almost exclusively for the over-50 crowd, getting worse as age increased from there, and getting much much less lethal/serious quickly as the age went down.

I've heard almost nothing about that in a long time.

To the contrary, all the talk now is just about the overall percentage (not that the numbers are very good even for that).

If the under-50 crowd has nothing in particular to fear other than an unpleasant illness with mortality likelihood similar to seasonal flu, then imo they need to get out and get back to work. And that's the case a fortiori if the MAGA meds are effective.

We high-risk types have learned how to take care of ourselves through the years.

So the question is, WTF is actually the deal with this thing?

637 Weve seen all too terribly the consequences of those who denied warnings of a pandemic, Obama wrote.

Posted by: Hierominous Botch at March 31, 2020 05:37 PM

Nobody knows. All the data we have is crap, and the only way that's going to get better is to wait for better data to arrive, and everybody's afraid that the world will come to an end if we wait for good data before doing something.

Us wearing masks isn't going to wash doctors hands.

641 What in the HELL are "health workers"?

The biggest victim of this plague clearly will be the English language.
