I KNEW I was going to get it. That was the point of my original article. If you believe you can avoid it, you're fooling yourself. I DO NOT believe social distancing works. But don't worry - the politicians and other liars will convince you it's working.He makes some good points. I think that masks still have a place, because I think that the initial dose of virus may make a difference in the severity of the illness you get if you are infected. Wonder if this virus follows the pattern of milder disease with a lower initial dose of virus? Addendum: if you are actually trying not to get the virus, a mask reminds you not to touch your face. Last few times we went out, we wore no masks.
I'd thought of wrapping my scarf around my face, but it was too warm (then; now it's ~35°

Some folks, usually older, were wearing masks. About 25% I'd say. Good for them. They're probably carriers.
Next outing, I was thinking of at least having a train-robber bandana mask - with my trenchcoat and cowboyish hat. Alas, not packing two six-guns. Or spurs.
There's a very good possibility that some form of this bug swept through our area (NE Okla) 'way back in December, when many folks had the sniffles, and the docs were talking about "an as-yet unidentified virus." Wasn't too deadly, or else no one was connecting dots. Think we may have had it.
Whether we got inoculated then, or became carriers, or more vulnerable, who knows? I just take my B vitamins in the morning and avoid humanity as much as possible - as usual.

My dad found a few old masks. One might be N-95, of course it is the one with with dry rotted ties, but I'm thinking maybe I can cut an old T-shirt to go over it. Polis wants everyone to wear masks here. I'm not clear if its on order yet. I may have some transparency films. I think the face shield would do more to protect from strangers sneezing and stop the unconscious face rubbing.

Even the N-95 masks leak a little around the edge, which I think is why that nurse study showed the surgical style mask was equally effective. And any tightly fitting mask is indeed (90%?) effective at stopping the wearer from catching a virus in a contaminated space. But they are perhaps more effective at stopping an infected person from becoming a super spreader.

Oh, I think that's actually not what's going on here.
Some of us actually DO know how this stuff works, and if you are NOT wearing hospital grade PPE, you're not going to avoid infection by whatever means you are engaging in.
You're just not.
So as SOME of us have been pointing out, it's not really helpful, other than making you feel better about being out and about.
But Ace got it in his head this week that somehow South Korea had the answer, and it was everyone wearing masks. Which, if I lived in New York City, I'd probably be doing too.
But I don't.
So then then other part of this is the rather disconcerting kneejerk attitude of some people that it's their right to FORCE the rest of us to comply with their rules for OUR behavior.
The mockery mostly comes from that.
But for those of you who are terrified of becoming infected, I'm more concerned about how your stress levels are being elevated by this whole mess, and the health consequences of that are likely to dwarf the effects of this virus, when all is said and done.
Not to mention the incredible task we face of trying to force this oppressive government enforced social compliance back once all is said and done.
So if it looks like mockery, it's because I take this deadly seriously.

However. This choral practice happened March 10, when we knew the virus was being spread locally. The choir people notified everyone if they even thought they might be sick, don't come. Everyone was greeted at the door with hand sanitizer, hugs and handshakes verboten. Chairs were deliberately spaced apart from each other. 60 people were present. Over 40 got sick and two have died. From sitting in a room singing for two hours.
My personal theory is the singing is what did them in, you do a lot of deep breathing and the like. Getting the virus inside the lungs from the start is bad. They suspect that is what gets some of the healthy medical types that have come down with it, they aspirate aerosol droplets from infected patients. So yes, I do think masks help. They keep the virus out and keep unaware infected from spreading it further. Now, how do we GET these masks they are thinking of requiring? Everybody is out of them!

If you live in an area with high infection rates, avoid people.
That's about the best I can offer. Do all that other stuff too, like washing your hands if you're going out. Take off clothes you wore outside and wash it. Keep your freakin' fingers out of your eyes.
Oh, and being outdoors has a much much lower risk of infection than being indoors around said people.

Later I should read the manual for my ozone generator. I think we could keep sanitizing the dust masks we have with ozone and eventually I'll figure out how to use it for freshening up the carpets and furniture. The fountain in our pond is running at about half strength, which means there is something sucked into the intake screen or something partially blocking the output side.
It can't be properly worked on at the shore because you need about 3 feet of water to let it flow. So yesterday, I tried to get our little paddle boat drained and ready to use. It's filthy, having spent the winter next to the pond.
So, all it takes is working up the ambition to go do the job.
This may take a while.

The article about the severity of symptoms being related to the "dose" of virus received confirms what I was thinking weeks ago. If someone infected coughs in your face just as you inhale it has to be worse than picking up a small amount and brushing it on the end of your nose. A 50 y/o bus driver here contracted the disease a few days after a woman on his bus was coughing up a storm. He died after a few days of symptoms.
With these young people getting seriously ill makes me wonder how big a dose they got. But there are enough people getting sick in this area that I wonder if we still don't know enough about how this virus works.
Ultimately I think everyone has to get it at some level or get a vaccine and with our family situation it means we have to be isolated as much as possible, masked when we go out, and do all the washing/sanitizing stuff.
I will never buy another thing from China.

Yes, and what you sneeze or cough into the mask will have greater pressure than the stuff coughed form 6ft AT you. If masks were ineffective, we'd tell medical staff not to bother wearing them around infectious patients. But no, you wear a mask and eye protection.

Thanks Tami. We have been pursuing this all week with our church. Getting the neccessary forms and paperwork together. Treasurer and Chief Elder axed it yesterday. They want the church shut down. Won't take the forgivable loan. Told Rev not to report to the office. He is currently at the office, taping a sermon for tomorrow to put online. Probably without pay for the foreseeable future.

Tami, ministers are usually not eligible for unemployment. There's a rule but I can't remember what it is. Yes, I believe they would rather see the church collapse than to take money from the government. They say God will provide. I believe He IS providing - thru these no-strings-attached funds. I understand the temptation here, but a much simpler answer is, we're a nation that's gone insane, in a world that even more insaner.
We can't trust China, and we can't trust our own government to give us even remotely honest answers to questions they, frankly, don't really know the answers to.
So people have room for conspiracies.
And some conspiracies being more equal than others, I'm not sure there's anything unusual about this virus or this outbreak. So our overreaction is just that, a perfect storm of national/international insanity.

I've thought all along that this was not a result of eating a bat in a wet market that just happens to be located right around the corner from a lab in Wuhan that studies bat viruses was a big red flag.
Then the Chinese government partnering with the WHO to flat out lie about human to human transmission for weeks as well as infection and death rates made it an even bigger red flag. Why would you lie about something like this unless it was bad?
Despite the media blackout in China we do know they were taking incredibly draconian steps including sealing infected people in their homes to die. I suspect we will find out in time that the rates in Wuhan were way higher than they are claiming.
If you are sitting in the Oval Office and a new virus that has unknown lethality that has been allowed to grow unchecked in China, a virus for which there is no vaccine and it is now spreading at an alarming rate around the world and you know you don't have nearly enough supplies to deal with an outbreak if the worst predictions come true, what would you have done?
Can't say I disagree with the steps Trump has recommended even if it is personally painful. Look around the world, see if you can find a modern, western society that isn't doing things similar to us or even worse. The only one I can find is Sweden which has a much different approach to healthcare rationing. They are pro.
We'll see how that works out for them.

Traffic control is a function of a universal convention that has an objective and immediately recognizable benefit. If you are too stupid to see the benefit of a stop sign at intersections with traffic, then driving probably is not for you.

I understand the temptation here, but a much simpler answer is, we're a nation that's gone insane, in a world that even more insaner.
We can't trust China, and we can't trust our own government to give us even remotely honest answers to questions they, frankly, don't really know the answers to.

what I've read, and what makes sense, is the initial amount of inoculum makes a difference. start with one unit of virus, takes a long time to build up if it doubles every 8 hours (random guess on time) ... but if initial does is 100 units of virus ... it has a head start in the system ... less time for immune system to knock it down.
I'm not clear if the first "infection" gets wiped out by white blood cells ganging up on the virus, then more infection requires the building of anti-bodies, and then even more infection (or a poor immune system, or comorbidities) means a person needs anti-biotics ... or maybe other intervention in Corvid-19 case, while the body tries to create the anti-bodies before death.
So of course, at some point in that process, the HCQ+Z treatment stopping the virus replication would be Helpful, as either the anti-bodies can then catch up, and/or the white blood cell count increases to kill/stop the remaining virus. that is my current understand, open to further development. ha

Well, I can't say it won't happen, all I can say is, that's not how "normal" viruses behave.
Up to now, all indications are this virus is behaving like a normal virus.
So yeah, there's room to speculate, because this is the world we live in now, and I would not ever suggest the Chinese aren't capable of creating a weaponized virus that will have said "sting in the tail."

what I've read, and what makes sense, is the initial amount of inoculum makes a difference. start with one unit of virus, takes a long time to build up if it doubles every 8 hours (random guess on time) ... but if initial does is 100 units of virus ... it has a head start in the system ... less time for immune system to knock it down.

That's always true, with all infectious material.
Amount matters. But the point here is, the amount that's going to get in through a cloth mask is enough.
If you breathe in, and there are infectious virus particles in the breath you take, it's enough to infect you.
Laws of diminishing returns being what they are though, sure, the further away you are, in time and space, from the collection of virus you're coming into contact with, and the more cloth you put between you and the air you breathe, it's going to be a law of diminishing returns... for the virus perspective.
The most important point here though is, a cloth mask isn't going to prevent infection.

Was reading about CASPER CRSPR techniques of gene editing, and how it comes from fairly commonplace soil bacteria's technique of defending against RNA viruses by inhibiting the virus' ability to replicate in the cells.
Apparently there is side research on CRSPR to look into an antiviral approach that is referred to as RNA-i (RNA interference)
What is interesting is that there is some speculation that what is happening with the HydroChloroquine and Zinc is that Zinc is being transferred into the cell via action of the hydrochloroquin and is inhibiting the virus replication that way. The molecule used in the gene editing seems to be built around Zinc, so I find that interesting. (Alternately it is suggested that the therapy is blocking the cell membrane transferrence points in the cell wall the Corona Virus uses to enter and preventing further infection, so your guess is as good as mine)
Anyway, it may be that if this is bioengineered, it may be the virus is vulnerable to the same techniques that were used to create it in the lab, which most likely was a CRSPR technique.

Human behavior is the explanation.
More people being tested means more cases reported.
No one, as far as I know, is doing any sort of controlled studies to determine infection rates, anything to show how many people who are infected are asymptomatic, or to show precisely which conditions lead to infections more fully. Other than cruise ships and nursing homes, I mean.
So the bus driver who got infected and died, everyone is saying "it was the lady who coughed on him!"
How the hell does anyone know that?
We don't.
So it's all still, a lot of guessing by people with no knowledge of how this stuff works, and mere conjecture by the people who do.
The only number that is CLOSE to being important right now is number of deaths... and even then, it appears there's some shenanigans being played with those numbers.
We aren't going to know any of the percentages until this thing is long over. And my conjecture... which is only that, is the death rate will be something less than 1% EVERYWHERE, and it will have remained where these things always do, killing the elderly and immunocompromised.

It's probably also worth noting, even IF social distancing reduces the rate of infections (meaning fewer people in the long run get the virus), its primary goal is to reduce the SPEED at which new viruses occur.
So as to not overwhelm hospitals and supply chains.
It remains probable that when all is said and done, the whole social distancing thing, with all the changes in behavior, including the stoppage of the economy, will not result in fewer people having been infected, or fewer people dying.

Finally, apparently Trump campaign offices have been quietly donating food to hospitals and clinics, buying at local restaurants for delivery. Nice.

Gonna call one of my favorite craft breweries and see if they've set up curb-side pick up yet - a few have.

That prudence will evaporate as quickly as it (organically) sprang up, once it is believed we're on the downside of the curve, and/or transmission is better understood, and/or the narrow mortality impact (elderly and medically compromised) is confirmed or at least widely perceived to be the case.

this is true ... if the inoculum is out there, it may be a cloud that lingers long enough for you to walk through it, or leaves that slight film on everything, even the one product you pick up.
This is not sterile technique though ... which is why I keep repeating about minimizing the amount of inoculum you expose yourself to ... that makes a big difference, probably ALL the difference.
This is always true of "germs" ... and is why we clean and treat open wounds, even as we are exposed in other ways to the same germs. The initial dosage of inoculum makes all the difference ... so a degree of separation is going to help stop the high inoculum infections.

My daughter is currently living in S Korea.
Their rules vary greatly depending on local conditions.
In Seoul and a couple of other hot-spots, they run a tight ship. Elsewhere it's much looser.
BUT, they are very strict about travel to or from hot-spots. If said daughter were to take a trip to Seoul, she could not return to her city without undergoing a monitored quarantine in a designated facility.

I did a chart starting March 4th, of deaths, pretty much the very start ... the spread sheet can add an exponential trend line (log chart) .... before and after that social distancing show no difference at all. I forget exactly when the rules became more strict, but mid-March. (beware the ides of March)

There are some people who are completely at risk from the WuFlu and I think they are potential fatalities in all families nowadays, but there are people with very low threshold for things they find disgusting. This is separate from concern for the lives of our loved ones.
Disgust is an element of identifying Taboo. Disgust does not create Taboo, as Taboo is what creates disgust; it is what acts as a wall around Taboo to keep our minds out.
Taboo is things like dietary limitations, your average musleman considers pork to be disgusting to consider, much less eat.
Generally we have Taboo things too, like eating live baby mice. A lot of disgust has been pointed out around this whole thing.
I wonder (in the shower sort of musing) if we are being primed for new Taboos as a form of social control.

The Swedes are quite progressive, of course, even if not as much so as the Beneluxers, who positively pride themselves on upholding the "right to die." (A Dutch friend told my son than putting an oldster on a ventilator is demeaning. A natural death is more dignified.)

So by mid-week next week I think there will be a much better perspective on the whole thing, as well as a lot more info for the scientists to work with.
States with very late projected peaks (VA, MO) may benefit the most if (as I have always expected), things go better than earlier projected. WH has shied away from regional distinctions (though state-level discretion on the less restrictive side has consistently been endorsed by Trump, though you have to listen to hear it, it's not a bald stand-alone statement) on the way up the curve - I think there will be more flexibility on the way down.
Especially if enough serology data (finding out how widespread infection and exposure has been, more solid estimates thereof) looks right.
Poor Italy looks to have plateaued, several days of declining new cases.

But Don brings (mostly) the refreshing, likable, or at least entertaining New York features - plain-spoken, direct, brash but usually in a good way, optimistic, can-do, energetic. The other guys - arrogant, entitled, back-stabbing (again, not entirely - there has been a tenuous love-fest between the WH and both for over a week now, in public).
One thing already looks certain. As improbable as Trump seemed, on paper, to be a great president, it's hard to imagine anyone better suited to *this* particular and distinctive crisis.

The average incubation period is 5 days ... probably two of those days the person can infect others with no awareness on the part of any involved in that point of contact spread. If it goes as I expect, I actually don't see a lot of "blame" attaching to governors, either.
If it is perceived that the public health outcome is acceptable and the measures taken were reasonable under the circumstances, I expect most will be looking ahead and not behind.
Specific bone-head stunts by specific governors (looking at you, MI, and also at NV) might play, but may be lost in the shuffle. Especially as they're being rescinded.

I agree, but the problem is that infected people will gravitate to fewer restrictions and better supplies, like the NYers who went to Rhode Island and points South. Then the problem will spread into your enclaves. It won't matter if they have homes there, if you have rentals and hotels.

But I still think there will be regional distinctions and changes in posture based on local realities - on the down-side of the curve.
It's not quite like kremlinology, but one has to listen to Trump's comments closely. Several times he has responded to questions at the briefings by saying, essentiall: 1) he supports strict measures taken by governors in states with high infection 2) he understands that places with low infection will have different policies.
In the context of stable/falling numbers in the major hotspots*, this translates into regional distinctions and variable "re-opening".
* NYC has been/hopefully will remain a unique case, for various reasons, so it likely will be under pressure for much longer

Hey, I'm all in favor of quarantining the hotspots.
I'm in favor of yanking the Comfort out of NYC and moving it to FL or some other place that will follow the rules. I hate being locked down because on 39 cases in my town and all NYC commuters. It's bullshit we'd have more of it locally if NYC felt they could have more fun here.

NYC is so bad - almost certainly - not just due to early high rates of infection due to foreign travel exposure - and belated responses - but to its basic human and economic geography. Density, public transportation - I think that's 90% of it.
An infected NYer - or Jerseyite, or person from NOLA or Detroit - heading to a vacation house in Duck, NC may infect some people, but Duck isn't/won't/can't be the same kind of environment for transmission.
And the bug is, if not everywhere, most places by now (serology data will start to let us know pretty soon how widespread it is, geographically and in terms of the population).

No, it's not as dense, but we're still waiting to see how much spread there is from the rich migrants. It will also depend on how many people are in those summer houses. My neighbor who has a place on the NJ shore, said that one of the summer families came to their house with the wife's sister's family and 5 of their older son's friends from NYU. I'm not as optimistic that they won't spread it, but I'll be delighted if you're right.
On the same theme, we received our second "shelter at your house" request. This time it's the son of a former colleague (parents in AZ), who'd like to work from our house with his live in girlfriend. We declined, but if this guy who we haven't seen in 4 years has the nerve to ask it means others are trying to get out.

Most likely we would never have heard of the Chinese flu-as I suspect this was all orchestrated to hurt Pres. Trump. They wanted to make him look bad. Unfortunately for them, he is -as you all say-acting "like a boss". Because they have failed to not only look inadequate, but they have allowed him to gain approval, I suspect that this whole crisis will be winding down soon. It's hurting them too much to continue.
On the off chance that the crisis is real, and Hillary was president , she would have used the occasion to direct the trillions to every union in the country, no money for us paroles, and no company's would be encouraged to return to America, etc.
