First day of spring yard work yesterday. I love doing that sort of stuff. Nothing like being able to visually see evidence of your hard work.

2 Good Morning Morons today is Sunday, March 29, 2020. On this date in 1806 construction was authorized of the Great National Pike, better known as the Cumberland Road, becoming the first United States federal highway. The road ran westerly from Cumberland, MD to Vandalia, IL. Like most of the projects in the early 1800s it did not benefit the Southern States at all.

American news is selling stories of celebrities catching the corona virus and of big city residents fleeing to the hinterlands, spreading disease, and hoarding food. But the other checks called PSA's are controversial in that they have pros and cons. Medical professionals debate when or if it appropriate and many claim it is not appropriate for certain people. I don't knowhy this is the case but it is.

127 I used to take MREs hiking. A little heavy compared with freeze-dried, but a whole lot less expensive, and way more calories. My criteria was less than $5 a meal delivered was a good price. What I ended up with after a while was a metric crapload of the pouch entrees that I didn't particularly care for or need. Freeze-dried has convenience and weight going for it, and not much else. Damnably expensive.

The military entrees are actually pretty good, in the sense that, they don't taste TOO good. This is important, because if something tastes good it will often get eaten in a non-emergency situation. For some time I looked at an improbably large stack of boxes and wondered if I should get rid of them. Not anymore! The "Wheat Snack Bread" is a similar thing. They taste awful, so they didn't get snacked on.

Freezing it at time of purchase (below 0°) for about ten days seems to kill the critters, and at that point can be stored in the pantry. I still keep it sealed up to prevent it picking up off flavors. Flour tends to get better with a little bit of aging, iirc.

I had some flour a while back that had a bug/weevil in it. I checked the internets and someone said if you freeze it even for a while, that will not happen. So I have kept flour in the freezer for a few days and then I leave it out.

My big freezer thing now is bread. It might be the type of bread I use but the stuff is great out of the freezer. Put a few slices in the toaster and it is as good as it ever was. My bread is one of those so called healthy versions, Dave's Good Seed blah blah.

From what I've seen of the Joe and Jane Averages who buy freeze-dried pouches for emergencies, they fall into four categories:
1) They buy a bucket or big box or two of the stuff, not necessarily caring what exactly is in it, and smugly sit back knowing they're "prepared";

2) They buy a bucket or big box of the stuff, try some of it, and hate it, but it's too late to send back so they're stuck with it. Or they discover the "servings" are sometimes not that big;

3) They don't realize how much water is required to reconstitute these things, especially if everything they bought is in 4-serving pouches and they're reconstituting a pouch all at once; or

4) They taste-tested individual pouches before they bought more and even though it may cost more to buy individually, they bought what they would actually eat.

70% is fine.

BUT.... be careful with the addition of anything which will reduce that percentage, such as aloe vera for moisturizing.

The final product needs to be above 60% pure alcohol.

Which is why using the 91% to begin with is mathematically very easy.

2 parts alcohol to 1 part Aloe Vera gives you right at 60% pure alcohol for a finished product.

168 There's a recipe and baking instructions on line for making authentic "army bread" aka hardtack. It's for the civil war reenactment crowd. The usual ration for a Union soldier was hardtack, bacon, coffee, and some sugar if lucky. Confederate soldiers could only dream of such luxury.

Cheez its are pretty good. If I were in survivial mode I would a bunch of packages of hot dogs. Sure it is not fine living but you can freeze them or whatever. You can make pasta, blend them with this or that and at least you can survive on them.

172 I would agree they sucked. But, the freeze-dried pork patty is one item with a practically unlimited shelf life.

One thing I've noticed is the modern rations sometimes don't use oils or fats that are shelf stable. Canola oil is cheap, but it quickly reverts to paint, or varnish as it oxidizes. Open a packet of cookies, and prepare to gag. They are inedible. Even commercial varieties of Peanut Butter fall prey to this.

I think Popeye's is fried as well. For some reason it is not the same. People hate it when something is taken away form them for no good reason. There was something about those pies. 227 I read a speech given some years ago by a cardiologist.

Basically, heart disease sucks. It's hereditary to some degree. If you're prone to it, runs in the family, it doesn't matter much what you do. Or don't do. Smoking is not healthy, but it is those with heart disease that are most at risk.

I would think shareholders would have somewhat of a ... beef.. with McDonalds. Their french fries are almost inedible now. How do ya fvck up a spud? There was no reason for this. At the time I recall mumblings about offending Hindus.

WTF is a Hindu eating at McDs in the first place was never explained. Further, who cares what they think, when you get right down to it. I think it was a matter of cheaping out. Fryer oil is expensive.

Same thing with the delivery Pizza. Disgusting anymore, never very good - though it was tasty. Now all of it tastes like ass, and is damnably expensive. Amazing, maybe there will be a renaissance in home cooking.

I wish there was some way to save the mom and pop restaurants, and kill off the corporate chains? I mean, all things being equal. They suck.

More than likely this thing has been kicking around NYC as early as November and any cases that presented themselves were simply diagnosed as being flu related.

Even now, most Covid diagnoses are simply done via physical examination and elimination tests as there are not enough tests to test everyone.

Everyone and their mother who has a sniffle is now demanding to be tested for covid.

The effects of this disaster are going to be with us a very long time.

There's also some variability even in chains. There's a particular Biggby coffee show we patronize because they know how to make the specialty drink my wife craves. Other locations botch it.

Did you pay via credit card? Some places (including my own apartment complex, the state government, Bud's Guns, etc.) charge the ~3% that the credit card companies charge *them* and pass that along to you. This is why I pay my rent by having my credit union cut and mail checks to the landlord through their web interface.

If you had the flu back in December, it was probably the flu. It's
reassuring to think that you had it, you're fine, and now your immune.
But it was probably a regular seasonal flu. Most of us were not on the
cutting edge of wuflu, we just had a regular, garden variety, but still
fatal for some, flu.

Posted by: CN at March 29, 2020 08:36 AM (ONvIw)

I know I caught something in late Jan/early Feb. that lasted a good long time. It seemed like a combo cold/flu/chest congestion and possible infection. No fever and not much time spent on the head but this was different.

I have had one flu shot in my life since the military decades ago and I don't think I have even had the flu. I don't know what all this means but something floored me early this year like nothing ever before.

I loved the movie and was just the right age. I will just say it was not too deep on the technical details. 389 86 Good Morning Horde,

Mr. Spypeach has left once again to the front lines in search of toilet paper, it's been almost two weeks and we still have not found any. We are down to are 1 ply emergency reserves.

It's supposed to be a beautiful day today, so we are hoping to get the the local nursery, praying we won't be arrested for trying to buy plants out here in communist VA. Looking forward to starting yard work and doing some new landscaping. Then steak and shrimp on the barbie later

Well, it's more 1-ply, but if you have a Sam's Club membership, they've got 36 rolls of Scott's available online.

417 Just reading about the WaPo poll showing Trump gaining and now in a statistical tie with Biden and Trump way ahead on how he's handling WuFlu.

Then someone looked into the methodology on the survey and found this: The caller always asked for the youngest male or female in the household.

Just wow. Bias much? So much for random sampling.

421 The one thing in 1917 while the battlefield shows all the true horror it doesn't seem to extend far, though not sure seems a swath of ground the battle consumed would be 20 miles wide easily out to artillery range. Maybe this is before that occured I am not sure. The other day I came across a WWI picture coffee table size book I had for 40 years, I should take a look at it.

423 Kung Flu Freakout has not slowed down Biden one bit. He is still having campaign rallies. The ten person limit has had no measurable impact. 424 Pizza Hut changed their crust a year or two ago. The pan style used to be carmelized and crunchy on the bottom, yeah it was a little oily but it was tasty. Now you have to pay $1 extra for pan style crust and it's nothing like it used to be, soft and flavorless. I suppose marketing told them oil = bad. Bah humbug
