A friend is having her children write a little something in a family "pandemic journal" every night. Kind of gives them a sense that one day the pandemic will be over.
Are you going nuts yet? Have a friend who is vulnerable to the effects of the virus? I though these guidelines from an astronaut for productive use of time during isolation were excellent. Starting with risk assessment. (Here are some simple rules for the immunocompromised). A space capsule can be pretty dang isolating:
Watch less news. Interview and opinion shows on TV and talk radio shows that add to one's understanding of the situation can be valuable. But watching depressing, panic-inducing news about COVID-19 24/7 will only make you jittery, anxious and depressed. It's good for the news networks' ratings, but it's bad for your mental health. Instead, you can read, talk to friends, watch movies, learn a language, listen to music, start a journal, walk outside, garden or engage in hobbies. Do that project you've never had time to get to. In short, don't preoccupy yourself with the virus.Timelines Things are changing every day now. I wonder if putting dates on the records of our personal experiences will be as important as putting dates on the records of public statements and such?

I recorded my grandparents on tape but the recordings are in bad shape. One day, I'll get them to a sound engineer and have them cleaned up and preserved.
I miss them terribly. It's hard to grasp that now I'm the old people to the kids.

But my point in using death rate is, new cases are higher now because
hospitals can test on their own in hours, and I'd guess everyone with

For a college history class, my wife interviewed my grandmother about her experiences in World War II.
We got it on tape, which my wife transcribed. Very cool to have. I'd have never thought to ask her and she said stuff my dad (the eldest kid) never knew.

Paternal grandmother was a Rumanian immigrant who lived in Detroit. She and her husband sponsored other immigrants who lived with them until they could get out on their own. This, too, was during the Depression and to get by they shared a job in the car factories rotating among them so each man would get at least a day's work periodically.
My husband knew none of this and some of it his parents didn't know either. It would all have been lost without this chance event.

uring WW II everything was rationed.
When my grandparents got married (grandfather was a navigator on the transatlantic run), their wedding presents consisted of enough gasoline ration cards to get out of NYC for their honeymoon.
She saved some and showed them to me.

good plan ... half retired, I get to spend half my day doing such projects anyway, and don't listen to "news" ... but I do spend a lot of time understanding the details of the current DeepState war and its many tentacles. or attempting to see behind the wizard's curtain.
imo, in times like these, the contributors like Ace and others here are needed more than ever. Because the dis-info campaigns and "never let a crisis go to waste" people are always running their operations. Exposing them constantly is how their media stranglehold on "news" is broken.
Not being swallowed with despair from their lies is another thing entirely. imo we have to stay engaged with true details, or we get swallowed by the fake-News. Sort of a "Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil" strategy. Passivity is not enough ... active "resistance", or maybe outright hostility to the attacks, is the order of the day. imo

Reminds me of the time I was a freshman in college and I brought home some of my ROTC gear (no idea why I did...I think we were going camping) and my future MNL grabbed my sleeping bag (the Army mummy bag) and started turning it inside out and looking for the tags. She finally found it and said "Well Sumbich! (She's from Oklahoma) I made this bag!"
Turns out she worked at the Jantzen woolen mills in Vancouver and they had a contract to turn out sleeping bags for the troops in WWII. She worked the job for a year. It still had her section number and date stamp on it.
Tells ya how modern our stuff was in ROTC!

Last night I watched an old classic B and W film with Gary Merrill and Bette Davis, Phone Call From a Stranger, which is a drama with a little comedy, not a thriller, despite the title. It started me thinking about air travel in the late '40s and early '50s.

At first they were saying "the public doesn't need masks" and/or "masks don't work". But they may have been covering up their own neglect, and hoping to collect enough masks for the health care workers, as panicked masses buy in bulk.
I'm wondering how much of Trump's desire/plan to open U.S. back up for business in #2weeks has to do with the supply lines catching up ... masks/PPEs, the hydroxychloroquine supplies, Z-Paks. Trump tries to calm people, media is intent on driving the hysteria, and hence the panic buying means production can't keep up.

Then I brought them the canned rabbit pate. Chekov is now turning into a pushy piglet: He wants his share plus Wolf's, and is always hanging around me in the kitchen, something he rarely did before. As for his "issues," things seem better than in a long time. And he plays more energetically than he has in a while.
The odd thing is that I tried this canned rabbit stuff on him before, and he would sniff at it, eat a little, then walk off. Twelve hours later his bowl had to be washed to remove the old dried food before I could feed his next meal.

One result of this mess is more masks are dropping. The WHO is being exposed as being in China's pocket instead of a non-partisan world health organization.
They initially covered for China and lied about the ability of WuFlu to be transmitted from human to human costing precious weeks of planning. And they absolutely refuse to acknowledge Taiwan as a separate entity from China.
There will be a price to pay on that starting with Trump recognizing Taiwan's independence.

I've had fun with odd little bits of WWII stuff, like postcards to Japan from a Japanese farmer in Manchukuo (colonized Manchuria), taken off a Japanese soldier in the Solomons. Pre-war. With translation help was able to figure out the guy was one of the farmers brought over by Japan to raise wheat. Son of the Marine who got them appreciated it. In perfect condition, too.

Why hasn't the state medical office or whatever been on this for at least a week, appointing coordinators for hospitals in NYC boroughs or smaller zones? I've wondered why reports have been coming in that some hospitals look like war zones, but not every hospital in NYC is in that situation.
Cuomo's been whining about future ventilator needs day after day, but what's he been doing to sort-out the NYC front-line hospital situation, day to day? Depending on DeBlasio? Yikes!

Maybe WalMart (and other stores) should consider selling rain checks for TP, and other goods subject to hoarding. Make it like a gift card, with a magnetic strip. Keep a tally of how many rain checks are sold, and when shipments of such goods arrive, sequester enough on pallets in the back to honor the rain checks, putting any excess on the shelves. Purchasers of rain checks could come on periodically, have a cashier swipe the card, and if any of the items have arrived, an associate could fetch them from the rear to honor the rain check.
Might work to slow the stampede at the gates when the store opens.

Taiwan has prospered and is pretty content with their situation, including security, as they've been able to maintain a nice small military establishment, and have mastered the low-profile, unspoken style of de facto "alliance" with us and a few others that they want.
The US suddenly reversing its position and recognizing Taiwanese independence would be a provocation almost requiring some stupid act by China, and today's America literally can't bestir itself to defend its own territory, much less act like a world power other than through limited SF activities.

The FAA has suspended the Collings Foundation's ability to carry paying passengers on its remaining aircraft citing a lack of safety. The crew chief on the flight that crashed had received no formal safety training and was unaware of such a program. The pilot of the fatal flight had signed off on some of the records, hence there was a lack of oversight. Other documentation was not maintained.
Here is where it gets more technical. The No.4 engine that prompted the emergency return was known defective before the fatal flight. One of the magnetos required to fire the spark plugs was in-op and the other magneto was producing weak spark at best. The spark plug gaps were also found to be out of tolerance. The No.3 engine, located on same side of aircraft as No.4, was also found to have out of tolerance spark plug gaps, fouled plugs, and even cylinder problems. Please note that No.3 was supposed to be one of the three Zero-Time engines on Nine-o-Nine meaning it was fresh from overhaul.

Me, I try to keep a journal for myself just so I can remember when things happen! (What year did the septic field crap out?) I'm not very diligent though, with months sometimes between entries. I haven't written about this virus - quite frankly it's too painful.
I'd really like to see more news about people who have had it and recovered. Our local news is full of people who died, some of them not elderly and in good health, or those in severe medical distress. And these stories are all IN CAPITAL LETTERS!! I'd really like to hear about people who caught it and are not dead or in their death throes.
Some days ago I felt that this virus just had to go through the population and we'd be out of it, like a bad flu season. Now I am not so sure. The CDC people say "most people will have some cold-like symptoms and cough" and the news is "MORE VICTIMS!!! MEDICAL CRISIS!!! DEATH!!!" Makes you wonder if the CDC is giving us happy talk and the real story is much worse.

Some soup, canned chili, plenty of bread of all kinds. Produce, other sections totally normal.

excellent ... long ago I did "word studies" or used interlinears and concordances .... what is cool is how easy it is now. I don't "Believe" the same as I did then .. but any verse I'm curious about I can find details quickly ... "Ephesians 6:11 KJV interlinear" takes me right there, then can just click on the corresponding Greek (or Hebrew OT) and it lays out the other uses of the word. Pretty nifty.
I recall an old teaching that the post Pentecost terminology is more athletic competition, than the actual war of the old testament. So the "spiritual man" can have eyes opened to the real struggle .. the "not against flesh and blood" competition.
It is more Olympic-like competition. "I have run my race, I have finished my course, henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness" kind of thing. I think that is a healthier attitude, and helps to control the "fight or flight" response when faced with crisis.
Since I see most current warfare as "Psy-Op or 4G (not that I understand that, but it is fighting in the grey zones ... not quite illegal, but China buying our media, for instance, or controlling our chains of supplies. That is where the battle is being fought NOW ... Huawei and 5G also. Google is certainly trying to possess our thoughts, not kill us outright.

Pretty sure that one of the rules when readying to fly any piston-engine aircraft is to do a mag drop test. Run each engine at a specified RPM, and switch off one magneto. Note the RPM drop as it continues to run on the other mag. Turn the mag back on, and switch off the other, and again note the RPM drop. If the mag drops are not nearly equal, the engine is not fit for service.

To prevent separation of the "P" leads on the left magneto they had been safety wired which resulted in the magneto being grounded. The cam follower on the right magneto on No. 4 engine was worn beyond limits. Engine was also showing signs of detonation and damage.
This is inexcusable. It was just a matter of time before a crash would happen.

I'm seriously considering making a list of all the shit on my plate right now, sending it to the 4-6 different people I report to in two different organizations, and asking them to decide amongst themselves what's highest priority. I normally balance my own priorities among my three roles, but each of the people I report to is expecting that the work I'm doing for them is top of my list. This isn't normally an issue when I can actually work without being constantly interrupted, or when I can let my subordinates do their thing, but I've had to get more engaged in one particular role this last week because my subordinates don't have the authority/capital to get our required on-site work approved, and I defy ANYONE to work effectively while also caring for a 3yo and an autistic 8yo.
But. The important thing is, we are all well.

Still remember going to bed predicting DJT wins but everywhere was saying no shot, at 8pm with no results known. Woke up around 1130pm and a half hour imagined everything a Hillary as President would bring and it wasn't good. 0001 put on tv and should be there typing away waiting for Pa to be called, I think around 1am it was said we have this and went back to sleep around 1:30.

Dear Diary,
The supply of fresh leafy vegetables being in short supply, we began harvesting dandelion greens from the lawn. We have set up a watch schedule, to keep neighbors from sneaking over at night and stealing them. For years they have looked askance at our weedy lawn, but who's laughing now?
Two days ago we managed to pick off the first squirrel that we have seen in a week. It made a fine stew, but has all been eaten now. As an aside, fried squirrel skin makes quite a nice snack.
We persevere, but are uncertain how much longer we can hold out. Hunger is likely to get us before the scurvy sets in.
Marge 's diarrhea has pretty much abated, but the cost in TP has been devastating.

This site is where I come for sanity, especially now. The media has hyped this from the start, figuring this could be "Trump's Katrina" and might be the thing that finally brings him down.They see this as their last, best hope.
Plus it's a double win for them since sensationalism and doom and gloom breed clicks and views.
I see glimmers of hope from news here, but it's very hard to get actual hard facts and analysis that you can be sure of. We argue back and forth here about statistics and their interpretations all the time. But I know the folks here are well meaning and intelligent and I trust them.
The other thing I know is that the media is still incredibly powerful, and with the lock downs, more and more people are watching the MSM, and their opinions are shaped by it And it will shape policy.
Moreover, the MSM will double down on this crisis even when their efforts utterly fail. Heck, many are still whipping the long and utterly dead Russia horse. The only losing situation for them is to admit that either (1) the crisis is pretty much over and we can go pretty much back to normal; or that (2) Trump has actually done a pretty good job here even if things get tough. They will NEVER do either. They are way too invested.
Anyway, all that to say, Ace, the COBs, and the whole community are needed now more than ever. Thanks, so much.

There's another comparison that is invidious by leftist standards: Taiwan vs. Red China.
Same people, two different political systems. One has worked well. The other, not so much.
This is what researchers call a controlled experiment. The control isn't perfect, but it's as close as we can come in a human context.
See also the U.S. vs. Mexico. Two countries with widely varied climates, geographies, etc. from mountains to oceans to deserts to wilderness. Cross the border from San Diego to Tijuana to see the difference in peoples, cultures, and political systems.

Oh - and to answer Fen's question - I have always been what we call conservative today, despite the constant drumbeat of opposition in the schools. I attribute that to the very high value I place on independence and autonomy. Since I was a wee one, I have HATED being dependent on anyone or anything, and I have also REALLY F'N HATED being told what to do.
Quick story about that. In fourth grade, I was in Montessori, and we were given a list of tasks to complete for the week and allowed leeway to determine how we wanted to complete them (within a few requirements such as a minimum number of tasks completed per day). I did very well with this approach. However, at times, my teacher felt the need to interfere with how I was managing my own workload, and it INFURIATED me like you would not believe a sweet little blonde (note: I'm now brunette but still was blonde at that age) fourth grader could be. My mom still has a note I wrote to her one day in which I ranted about how my teacher was getting in my business AGAIN when she should just STFU and STFD (obviously I didn't say that at that age, but it's how I would have said it now) and let me get on with my business.
So, naturally, I was never going to support someone politically who thinks I can't make my own decisions.
Well, I better get back to work while my husband is home to wrangle the children. Lots to do.

Not 40 and younger, but my political awakening came on 09/12/2001. I was home from work the day of the terrorist attacks. Watched in horror as the towers collapsed on live television.
I remember clearly the feeling I felt that day: completely alone and afraid. I was 25 years old and I realized I knew nothing of the world outside my little bubble of sports (watching, playing).
I knew nothing of politics, never followed it. But I did know that I was pro-life. When I started looking things up, I realized Democrats were pro-abortion, so I immediately knew I was a Republican voter.
I then found Rush Limbaugh within the next few weeks and listened every day at work. As I listened, it wasn't so much me being taught as it was me hearing him and saying 'Yeah! That make sense, why aren't more people saying this?'
I then found milblogs and political blogs around 2003 or 2004 and the rest is history.

I can't tell a story to save my life. But my Aunt Lois could... She was an evangelical Christian... She had a disable (paraplegic, quadriplegic, not sure) friend that got married to another disabled person in a similar situation. They asked her to help them consummate, because they couldn't pull it off themselves.
Aunt Lois was a bad ass mother fucker. I don't think the mainstream understands evangelic christians. You have to understand that this couple was MARRIED BEFORE GOD and yet could not consummate. So anyway, she helped them.
When she would tell the story the entire room would be crying from laughter. I wish I had recorded that story. One of the best I ever heard.

I have been trying to cut way back on casual drinking when I started the new site last year. It seems ready made for alcoholics. You have no idea how many chronic alcoholic assholes work in upper management at this place and it was something I did not want to pick up. So when the quarantine hit, I was horrified to realize all those bottles of alcohol were completely empty except for half a bottle of vodka from 2 years ago- and vodka is not a lazy, casual drink.
Hit the liquor store last week and picked up a bottle of Four Roses. I am set for a few weeks.

Yeah, those kinds of conversations I can really get into. Unfortunately, I usually see them after the thread is long dead.
80s movies, 80s-90s sitcoms (I'm a YUGE Seinfeld fan), 80s-90s music and Classic Rock (favorite band of all time is Aerosmith).
Of course, when I see people ripping on Creed and Nickelback and Bush, I tend to hesitate before joining any conversations. My musical tastes run across the board and have changed throughout the years. First band I liked when I was young was Beach Boys, then went on to Aerosmith in my early teen years. I've liked INXS and U2 and a lot of classic rock. Then moved to top 40 and alternative rock in the grunge years of Nirvana and such. Liked bands like Theory of a Deadman and Seether and Kid Rock. Went through a country music phase until they went too hip hop country. Now I'm back to pretty much all classic rock all the time.

Same people, two different political systems. One has worked well. The other, not so much.
This is what researchers call a controlled experiment. The control isn't perfect, but it's as close as we can come in a human context.
See also the U.S. vs. Mexico. Two countries with widely varied climates, geographies, etc. from mountains to oceans to deserts to wilderness. Cross the border from San Diego to Tijuana to see the difference in peoples, cultures, and political systems.

That fits with the founding of America as the other half of the Protestant Reformation breaking away from the Catholic Church in Europe. Catholicism has always been more of a collective mindset than Protestantism, ignoring the recent Marxist/SJW infiltration of Protestantism. Taiwan and the people of Taiwan hold as their identity breaking away and being separate from China the collective. Also, they have a homogenous nationalist culture which helps along with their high IQ. Just like the European Protestants who settled our country 400 years ago. I don't believe the culture and mindset of Catholicism fits in a Jeffersonian Republic. I believe it's unique to the culture, mindset, and higher IQs of European Protestants and those who share almost similar cultures, mindsets, and IQs.
The failed post WWII nation building has proven this IMO.

Being 44, never married with no kids, I have nothing in common (life experience wise) with pretty much anyone anymore. Not too many people in my age range and over who share my lack of life experience. Most people my age are married and have kids and share those types of experiences.
With I think two exceptions, all my friends and family members are married with kids. I don't regret my decision to not get married, since I have accepted the fact that I am not husband or father material. But it does make one the black sheep of society.

That is me to a TEE. Hated being dependent on parents when I was young and wanted nothing more than to finally get out on my own and be completely independent.
Did not have very good teen years at home. Could not WAIT to get out of the house and go out of state to college. Hated coming home for the holidays and being back to having to live by parents rules again after living on my own at school.

First, I hope I didn't come across as being critical of anyone who drank. I just meant it as admitting that I just have nothing to contribute when people are talking about making alcoholic drinks. It's not a good or bad thing, just one more thing that puts me in the black sheep of society, since talking about alcoholic beverages is like talking about sports to most people. Unfortunately, since it was never my thing, it keeps me from bonding with people over it.
Hah, and no that wasn't a euphemism. The 'knowledge and experience' is a true compliment to the people who comment here. From those who are nurses and share their experiences, to those who are handymen (and women) who share their experiences of things they do to fix up their cars and houses and such, to those who know much about political history and economic history and then especially those who are military veterans and share their perspectives and experiences.
Seriously... treasure trove of knowledge and experience among those here that I have not read anywhere else in my 15+ years of reading political and military blogs.

not ALL a giant plot, but the media response to blame Trump is the usual, and the never let a crisis go to waste aspect is probably partially at work. My guess is a majority think the initial release was not intentional, even if it came from their lab (maybe via selling infected meat from the lab, something they do, allegedly).
Trump has to guide the ship through media narratives (which he did with the "hoax" comment about how media was playing it, which Trish got fired for stating clearly). But he also takes the virus seriously, and the economic impact ... $6T to throw around helps ... because free stuff still wins elections. That may just "kick the can" again, past 2020 ... Term Two will determine our fate, in terms of defeating The Globalists, imo.

My frustration is not that quarantine measures are meaningless or unnecessary. The opposite if fact; I am furious at the Ohio response because our "leadership" offers nothing but fear-mongering without any hard data.
Gov. DeWine says Cleveland Clinic has a model that says peak of infection will be in May. As a person that models for a living, I know that all models are wrong but some are useful. We now have one of the authors of the Imperial War College study say, "Oopsie, that whole 500K deaths in the UK thing? Yeah, it should be closer to 20K." Fauci is now saying that it's looking like they probably over-estimated the mortality rate of SARS-CoV-2 and it may end up not being much more fatal than influenza.
What are the demographics of the people dying from this virus? The media is completely silent on this. It makes a big difference if the bulk of fatalities are among the extremely elderly or have serious health problems, or the generally healthy younger people.
