EMT 03/28/20

It struck me today that starting in the next couple months, we'll be bombarded with tales from people about how they almost died from the 2019 corona virus.

Our current culture will not abide a drama void.

Reminds me of the time I was on leave from 'Nam, and I saw Kennedy get shot.

I've spent the past couple of hours watching Larry Bird videos on utube,
wandering over from the Curly Neal link in the sidebar. My word, what a

Of course, being an
older 29-yo and a b-ball fan, I saw a lot of those clips in real time.
Wife (both current and ex) and I have never missed an NBA championship
series or a Final Four game. Well, until this year.

It struck me that Fauci and some others had an extreme view of 'anecdotal', as in, if it's not the result of a 5 year double blind CDC full on research project, it's merely anecdotal.
And that's BS. Fauci as much as stated that a doctor's patient data is anecdotal, which would invalidate a metric fuckton of research.

First year I watched the final four, featured Bird vs Johnson, IIRC.

I got started in HS, Enquiring Minds. Dad had season tickets to the USC Gamecocks games and took me to a lot. Then I went off to UNC-CH. Then I started following favorite players that went pro. And now here we are.

Can't say I can consider it time wasted, either, though maybe a bit overdone. It's not a bad thing to watch excellence in action. I feel the same way about listening to good music.

61 Our county got hit with a complete shutdown starting tonight with some exceptions. Our business is not one of them. We have a small office in 4 unit office building. Building owner is not happy and wants to work too. I'm thinking of going in anyways, hate working at home especially with kids.

Anybody in a shutdown area know what the police are doing? Are they driving around looking for cars in parking lots or lights on? Giving fines or just sending people home?

This sucks, can't believe it is happening.

62 We live in an area with a very large per capita number of this crap. One of my employees has been in icu for a week. Another employee's mom was placed in ccu Wed. That she's still alive is a minor miracle.

There were two separate funerals here the first Sat of March. Same funeral home and "maybe" the same Minister. Idk for sure about that. At least five deaths from the two funerals. That's how the Mom got it. Don't know how my employee got it.

Now his wife has it. Idk if their kids do or don't have it. I spoke to him from the hospital yesterday. He could barely speak a complete sentence.

Most people won't get it but make no mistake, you don't want this sht.

There are "essential" business/workers so there are people out and about here. And you can still drive to stores and to take care of family members. Companies have been giving papers to employees that state they work for an essential business in case they are stopped. It's all very creepy.

After 40 years of creeping "nanny-state knows best" here we are under martial law and 70% (my estimate) of the country thinks that is just fine.

We lacked the will to respond to an islamic attack by striking back directly at the muslim world - and now we lack the will to isolate the groups that are spreading covid. We insist on uniform solutions for all instead of targeting the specific problem.

We couldn't fight WW II now. We would insist on separating the NAZIs from the good germans.

The world is divided into three concentric portions. The periphery or outer rim is Olympus, where all is perfection and where the gods dwell. Between Olympus and the moon is Cosmos, where all is orderly and all movements are in circles. Between the moon and the central fire is the region called Uranus, where all is disorderly and the movements are up and down. The earth is in this lower section of disorder, and moves in a transparent globular shell like the celestial bodies around the central fire.

273 Morning, friends. I'm on "spring break" after virtual teaching for two weeks. In my opinion, it's a whole lot of work for not much outcome. You can't hand a kid a piece of paper and then collect it, so you have to come up with ways of getting work to prove they learned something from the lessons I assign. I did zoom with my homeroom kids this week and it was great to see them. They, of course, are zooming each other all the time and have found multiple ways of having fun, including PLAYING OUTSIDE! That's one good outcome of this idiocy. Our governor says our state can't go back to school until May 1st. Bet he cancels the rest of the year.

So at the big box office supply store, they offered a $50.00 rebate for trading in an old printer, even if it didn't work.

Not having an old printer to trade in, I asked the 20-something salesperson if I were to present a used ball point pen, and state that it self identified as a printer, could I get the rebate.

His answer was, oddly enough...

Producing low cost consumer goods half way around the world would be competitive with producing locally. In itself I'd think the idea would be dismissed without further consideration.

What bizarre economic conditions would make such an idea worthy of consideration?

I think, just maybe, let's jack up local regulations, taxes, and other overhead to more than double the cost of local products... why that is functionally equivalent to a 100%+ tariff on local goods!

This is a Facebook post put up by the local (Michigan) Police Dept that is riling people up around here. Considering our 'stay-at-home' order has a ton of exceptions for 'essential' workers as well as going out to get groceries and food and supplies, etc.

Oxford Police updated their status.
March 25 at 6:41 PM

If you work in a critical infrastructure industry, as defined by the Department of Homeland Security, such as healthcare services and pharmaceutical and food supply, you have a special responsibility to maintain your normal work schedule. People are encouraged to take a walk or bike and enjoy the fresh air but with your own family. We are concerned at the amount of cars on the roads making unnecessary travel and visitations. Please for the sake of our first responders, STAY HOME OR STAY ACTIVE BUT WITH ONLY THOSE IN YOUR HOUSEHOLD!! You are putting your officers and first responders at risk and enforcement may become necessary if people can't obey the order of the Governor. Violation of the Executive order is a misdemeanor if you can't police yourself. MCL 10.33 and MCL 30.405(3)

First reply to this:

Melissa Hanks Ketchel
Enforcement of what exactly? Half the town is encouraging people to still get carry out from local restaurants and the police department is saying too many cars are out driving around. How is one to determine what the cars are doing? Making unnecessary trips and visitations.. is this some kind of psychic power?

The last line of this post is the most Barney Fife thing I have seen in awhile.

Oxford Police
Melissa Hanks Ketchel LOL! Carry out is considered essential for food but yeah I get it. We are just trying to reduce the amount of traffic as possible. Be safe, thank you.

Nicole Osvath
Why is it ok to go for a walk or bike ride where you might not be 6 feet away, but not a drive in your car where you'll definitely be 6 feet away. Oakland County said they are not pulling people over.

Oxford Police
Kristi Steinhour we are just simply trying to get people to stay home and have less risk of first responders having to come to your aide. Simply the more people out, the more the risk for us and others. Arguing over this seems silly. There is an executive order that will be enforced if necessary but we are trying to avoid that and just because another agency may operate differently that doesn't mean we will.
Please just use common sense and if nothing applies to you or if you feel entitled then do what you want.
Stay safe, thank you.

Enough already.

Michigan has 90 dead in less than a fortnight. The metro Detroit hospitals are overwhelmed because this is *in addition* to everything else.

If we had car accidents produce 90 dead and hundreds injured in ten days, the State Police could close the highways.

The Detroit riot killed 43 people in five days and brought in federal troops to stop it.

This is serious stuff.

One of the reasons that Fake News has become so prevalent & far reaching is the fact that corrupt "journalists" base their stories on SOURCES that they make up in order to totally distort a narrative or story. When you see, "five sources say", don't believe the story, it is....

....very often FAKE NEWS. Lamestream Media should be forced to reveal sources, very much as they did in the long ago past. If they did that, the media would be trusted again, and Fake News would largely be a thing if the past!

The old rule was you could use an anonymous source, but *only* if you had someone go on the record to confirm it.

Otherwise the assumption was that you were just making it up.

Of course that was when we had a much more competitive news environment and media valued the trust the public gave them. Newspapers in particular saw themselves as the elite of the news world because they could give you much more depth than a TV or radio report.

The curious thing to me is why so many senior managers/editors are willing to drive themselves out of a job.

Bigly.

We used to take Scouts down to tour Comfort, when she was home-ported in Baltimore.

The nation really could use about four more of these things.

Maybe not run by big-Navy.

But under some form of government control.

They could do amazing things.

And the PR would be a not-small side benefit.

I'm expecting a TSA-like cabinet-level position with extra-constitutional authority to shut down and lock down in "the national health interest," such cabinet head to have powers to override a GOP president.

I will say that this has given me the opportunity to tell a lot of people to their faces that they are a bunch of stampeded, media-blinded, freedom-hating cowards. Hell, all you have to do is quote the USA Kung flu death number and then the swine flu death number and watch them freeze up like Norman when you ask why the country wasn't shut down then.

When I read about the numbers the Spanish flu killed in 1918-19, I was stunned to think how quickly it had been pushed out of the collective consciousness. How much did people hear or learn about it, even in American history classes, before corona virus? I had good US history teachers but I remember it being taught basically as an afterthought. Horrible WWI happened and then, oh yeah, there was this flu pandemic and then the roaring 20's came and everyone had fun for a while.

Maybe in the case of the Spanish flu, what had happened was so horrifying that people pushed it out of their minds ASAP. In our case, we are already so tired of hearing about this damn thing, I can't imagine months of talking about it.

Of course, if Trump continues to handle things well and his numbers go up, the media will want to change the subject quickly. And i fear that because we'll be so tired of it, we won't learn and implement changes that should be made - moving our manufacturing back here and strengthening borders. The Left doesn't let crises go to waste - the Right needs to learn from them.

Seasonal flu, going by the low end estimate of 20,000 USA deaths is an average of 55 deaths per day.

H1N1, with 60,000 estimated dead over the course of April '09 to April '10 is an average of 164 deaths per day.

So I take it you are suggesting we stay in this 'stay-at-home' situation for the rest of time?

While we're at it, let's start banning foods and activities that lead to deaths from heart disease (610,000 USA deaths per year, 1,671 deaths per day). And when some health study comes out showing some link between some food or drink and cancer, well, time to ban it to prevent those deaths.

Exactly how far are you willing to keep liberty and freedom from people in this country to try to prevent people from dying?

Correct. This "if it saves one life" garbage has got to stop. Yes people are going to die from this disease. Most of them would have died within a few months anyway even without the disease according to the famous Doctor in the UK.

But is "saving one life" worth it while intentionally destroying the World's economy?
