"Global Warming" Alarmist Who Panicked the World By "Predicting" a Half Million Wuhan Flu Deaths In the UK Alone Now Says... Never Mind

We need heads for this.

And I think I might mean that literally.

His new bullshit -- and his "model" is, like all alleged global warming models, completely based on whatever bullshit assumptions you start the model with -- garbage inputs, garbage outputs -- is that a great many more people contracted the Wuhan Flu than he thought, which means that many, many people had the flu and didn't even know it, which means... the Wuhan Flu is not much more dangerous than the standard yearly flu.

Gee sorry I crashed the world economy. Muh bad.

Of course, he didn't do it alone. It was the incompetent psychotics of the media and the obsessive shut-ins of Twitter that really Spread the Disease of FakeNews Panic.

24 I watched Brian Kilmeade beclown himself on Fox this morning. He was hyper-ventilating and asking, "Why won't the rest of the nation give NYC all the ventilators???!!!! Reeeee!!!!" The 4-star admiral from FEMA kept his composure and replied that NY got 4000 ventilators yesterday and Cuomo hasn't even started getting the ventilators from the out-patient surgical centers in. Flat out said that Cuomo needs to fully utilize his available resources.

I then realized that part of the reason the media has lost their minds over this virus (besides the default OrangeManBad! setting for most of them) is that it has registered in their reptilian brains that the Wuhan Lung Rot endangers THEM (due to their "citizen of the world" life-style), not the deplorables in fly-over country.

I think this dude at the Imperial War College is trying to get ahead of the lynch mob.

"Should it turn out that the epidemic wanes before long, there will be a queue of people wanting to take credit for this. And we can be damned sure draconian measures will be applied again next time."

However, I absolutely agree that we shouldn't rely on one model and moreover I think (professionally-I am a statistician and applied probabilist and this sort of modelling is pretty standard) that he did take the most pessimistic estimates-which are largely undermined by the experience of the Diamond Princess. It's all about your health services not getting overwhelmed. If they do, then many, many thousands will die, because of Wuhan flu not with it.

Yes. As so many have said, the doomsday scenario depended on a *lot* of guesswork (if I am feeling uncharitable - and I am - I would say the guesses were deliberately chosen for big scary figures, as global warmists are wont to do). Some of those guesses are known to be wrong, and others are unknown. The big guess that was wrong, as far as I know, was time. It was based on China's disclosure in mid-January and there is a lot of evidence that this probably surfaced a month or so *before* they disclosed it - a month of contagion and unfettered travel. That has pretty significant consequences.

The other unknowns are still unknown beyond some statistical guesswork (as near as I can tell, anyway), primarily what the damn denominator is. We don't know, especially in places like this country that are testing *only* symptomatic people or those in close contact with confirmed cases. It's a skewed and self-selecting data set right now.

Should this guy be punished for sowing doomsday scenarios and triggering a major panic? Maybe so. He should certainly lose his job and never be published again.

But my ire is even more with the press and the state. The former for whipping up hysteria based on a problem they cannot understand and deferring to the first expert that fit their narrative, and the latter for exploiting any excuse to go insane and cause damage.

136 Jackstraw asked a good question last thread, and I have an answer - but there's no support for it either internally or internationally, so it's just a pointless thought experiment - an imagining of what *could* happen in a bolder, more confident world.

"Just out of curiosity, what would you do about a corrupt government that was sending billions of dollars of drugs into your country using that countries corrupt military in conjunction with their justice system and terror groups including FARC and Hezbollah?"

I would use any and all financial and political leverage (including outright bribes, if necessary) to enlist Columbia and Brazil, and induce them to launch a joint effort. Venezuela's military is concentrated in Caracas, the north central area. Venezuelan forces would make a quick strike from the west, backed by US Air Support, taking and holding Maracaibo, the primary oil producing region. (the only part of Venezuela still worth anything) Brazilian troops could move quickly through the southern half of the country - Everything south of the Orinoco River, which is half of the country, can be controlled by holding one single highway.

And then they hunker down and sit there. With the west and the south gone, what Maduro and his generals control is just a small rump state around Caracas with no access to food, money, or power. It collapses into chaos in a month or less, with international troops invited in to provide order. And Columbia and Brazil get to keep anything they've taken. New borders.

So that's what I would do, but it won't happen.

I've noticed this recently. The intelligent skepticism that lay behind doomsday predictions was the *disbelief* that Nature could respond to recover from powers of distortion.

This skepticism against a natural "equilibrium" is one of the historical forces that showed through in Keynesian economics.

Now, they *believe* that Nature had its own reaction system.

So, they've actually equivocated on the entire Nature of Nature in the progressive, interventionist point-of-view.

I don't think it is 3D chess or anything like that. Trump has been pretty clear on offering Fed guidance and then the states do what they will and he will support the states to treat people hit by the outbreak, financially, etc.

This morning the pravda state run cbc were all beside themselves wondering why the market hasn't crashed with the US's unemployment announcement.

It was just as surreal as watching CNN or MSNBC, etc.

This is still the stop the brain-drain mentality. They do not want people to know how good it is in the US. There are problems, yes, but the US gets busy when confronted with something. And capitalism works. Big government doesn't.

They have no idea why individual states' leaders are making decisions.

If you notice, Trump has been pushing a federalist strategy on this, which I think is entirely appropriate for several reasons.

First, because the states are materially different from each other, so what is appropriate for may not be for another. Second, because no one knows for sure what the best approach is, so it's worthwhile making room for a variety of approaches. Third, because if Trump adopts a strict top-down approach, he'll be blamed for everything every idiot out there does. And fourth, philosophically, we need more power - and the attendant responsibility - to devolve to the states on issues generally.

It's not multidimensional chess.

It's a mass hysteria, largely fueled by the media And politicians being the jackals that they are, are capitalizing on it to increase their own power and hopefully to harm Trump.

Trump is caught in this tide of madness, and swimming in the current to the best of his ability. He must appear to DO SOMETHING about the #BigBadCold that's gonna KILL EVERYONE, after all.

It's that simple.

Trump is playing the Politics of Panic to his own best advantage, because staying out of the game would be fatal to his Presidency.

It does not make this mass-hysteria any less of an hysteria.

To a point, yes. But there is a major difference in that this one was an imminent threat - a hugely contagious and extremely lethal virus spreading like wildfire through your community and family (never mind whether this is true or not, that is the position and the message) and you have a significant, immediate, personal risk of death or grievous injury to yourself or within your family.

"Climate change" doesn't have that personal urgency. They have been trying for decades to get it to have that kind of personal urgency, precisely because they want this level of panic over it. I don't think they can make them analogous.

They will, though, learn this lesson *very* well for whatever they can come up with that will have that level of personal urgency.

Not exactly. They survived because the virus couldn't grow in such acidic and alkalotic environments. The virus itself basically died out once it no longer had living human hosts. If the bomb to destroy the facility went off, however, the energy released would have caused a massive explosion in virus population and mutations, making any containment impossible.

most know it is exists they just don't realize so many dog them all the time. And to be clear, I know there are great Canadians and conservatives there. The conservatives there have had a worse time of it than we have.
It is not unusual that a foreign country has anti American sentiment. The joke I heard about Greece many years ago is half the country dislikes America and the other have moved here. But few countries define themselves by how much they are not American. You could say the same thing about France but that would be selling them short. France thinks they should be America, that we stole that title from them. It is not the same really.

From Wikipedia:

Author controversy
Winston Groom was paid $350,000 for the screenplay rights to his novel Forrest Gump and was contracted for a 3 percent share of the film's net profits.[64] However, Paramount and the film's producers did not pay him, using Hollywood accounting to posit that the blockbuster film lost money. Tom Hanks, by contrast, contracted for a percent share of the film's gross receipts instead of a salary, and he and director Zemeckis each received $40 million.[64][65] Additionally, Groom was not mentioned once in any of the film's six Oscar-winner speeches.[66]

Groom's dispute with Paramount was later effectively resolved after Groom declared he was satisfied with Paramount's explanation of their accounting, this coinciding with Groom receiving a seven-figure contract with Paramount for film rights to another of his books, Gump & Co.[67] This film was never made, remaining in development hell for at least a dozen years.[68]

Anybody can "order" anybody else to do just about anything - the trick is whether or not they will obey, and what kind of enforcement is available if people don't obey. In Texas, a County Judge could probably call on the County Sheriff and his deputies to enforce his orders, but they typically handle unincorporated areas only and are always spread pretty thin. City cops answer to the Mayor and the City Manager, with the advice of the City Council. They aren't under any County Judge, more like equals.

Everyone is obeying for the moment because of social pressure, not much else.

4. Potentially martial law if it meant they could institute their pet policies into place making them much more difficult to remove in the future.

392 Anybody can "order" anybody else to do just about anything - the trick is whether or not they will obey, and what kind of enforcement is available if people don't obey.

-----------

Can attest, these orders are in place. But they are not being enforced since most are complying. I don't think these orders changed the behavior of anyone.

393 Ace,

There is no model. We've never seen this thing before and we've never seen a reaction to a thing like this before.

I don't know about where you live, but here in Seattle, it's nearly a ghost town. We've never been more sanitary. We've never worn masks and gloves like this. We've never stayed home like this.

Claiming any improvement in numbers without taking these unprecedented steps into account is baffling. Only we aren't seeing an improvement in numbers. The only places that seem to have paused this thing are places that immediately imposed draconian measures. We are doing things on a more voluntary basis. And that is not going to work.

The Federalist is saying people should go out and get this on purpose. And yet yesterday you were wanting to execute some dipshit for licking products in a Walmart.

Get your story straight.

We can absolutely get things back to normal in three weeks. But only if no one transmits this thing in the next couple weeks. That's what China did.

A handful of people out of China spread this across the globe in a matter of weeks.

In real science, you have to deposit your raw data as supplementary material, so that anyone who is so inclined can repeat your calculations.

Conversely, if you refuse to do that, most reviewers and editors will reject your paper out of hand.

Crystallography is about as hard a science as you're going to find, and yet every crystallographic paper must have all of the raw reflection data (typically 4-5000 reflections) deposited as supplementary material, and the paper must specify the data reduction methodology and the programs (generally standard) used for such reduction.

Otherwise, adios, pendejo.

447 I said a week ago or so, my "over/under" number was 14,000 deaths. That was just based on it being resolved via modern medicine (HCQ + Z-Pak or whatever else) ... plus the social awareness ... together making the outcome more like a mild flu year. I had already read positive results from the HCQ thing, and the S Korea outcomes turning the curve early.

Besides the prognosticators raving about Armageddon predictions, enjoying the spotlight a little too much (using every high end of every range) ... the bigger issue is doctors come out with great results from the HCQ + cocktail, and for some reason (TDS?) many doctors refuse to use it.

Nevada Gov' actually orders it not be used, I assume many doctors are using it, and the one we know had 100% success with 350 cases (that tested positive, I assume). And at least one testimonial, the patient himself did the research and had to convince the doctor to let him try it.

Apparently the old protocol is to treat the symptoms, but not try anything not FDA approved (via years long studies). Since the malaria treatment is known to be safe, that just seems insane, and hopefully the eye on an ICU full of $10k/day patients has nothing to do with their decisions ... cuz hospitals would never do unwarranted and expensive procedures to pad their bottom line ... or be too afraid to try for fear of lawsuits.

Some of the Texas commenters have mentioned that there are officials in Texas called "county judges" who aren't judicial judges, but rather executives for the unincorporated areas of a county. So it is likely that under the Texas constitution and statutes this executive has that police power to order quarantines.

Or you could look up Texas government and how it works in that state.

My favorite bit of media panic mongering... In a newscast on one of my local Vremya broadcasts (where they buried the lede about the government enforced lockdown in my state), they did a profile of a rural doctor working on The Virus! in his community...

at one point, they cut to him webcasting from his office. "It will be a miracle if I don't contract this before this is all over!" he says.

Then, I shit you not, they cut to a photo of him slumped over his desk, with sad music playing, and slowly zoom in on it, while a voiceover declaims:

"He's just one doctor fighting for his patients' lives, in a war that no one saw coming..."

I believe that's the theory being used to justify it. The problem is that Quarantines before now have always applied to those who are ill or who have been exposed. There is no precedent in Law for a judge to quarantine people who have NOT been exposed, but who they worry might be exposed at some future point, maybe. 521 498 I went to Wal Mart last evening. I bought milk, which was plentiful. Didn't need anything else, but happened to glance down the snacks/chips aisle.

Apparently there's word out that eating Doritos keeps you from getting the flu. The entire aisle was radically depopulated.

Twinkies are still in short supply. They've got banana flavored, and chocolated-covered, but not the original.

522 It's just weird to me that you guys are looking at approval ratings and crowing about shit when this is in no way under control.

Our curve isn't even close to flattening. Unlike most illnesses, this one is transmissible before you know you have it. That's why we are social distancing. No one knows whether they have it or not for days. Some people's immune system has no trouble with it and they walk around thinking they don't have it, yet they are spreading it to hundreds of others.

I hope you are all right. That this is much ado about swine flu 2. But if you think this person in England is the only person raising the alarm, you aren't paying attention. Listen to the CDC and our Surgeon General.

For a party that complained about "death panels" a few years ago, you are all being awfully cavalier about what this this does. Which is shred old people's lungs. In Italy, they ran out of ventilators weeks ago. You know what they had to do? No ventilators for those over 60.

Italy has over 8000 deaths and counting. And that country is a fucking ghost town. If they flatten their curve will it be because this isn't a big deal or because they all locked themselves in their houses for a few weeks? Do we want to find out?

Well, the way the conservatives in this country are acting, it seems we are going to.

523 LOL, I said that to the inlaws once. No one in the US every even thinks of Canada. I never did. This enrages them.
They are literally obsessed.
Posted by: artisanal 'ette

it must be difficult for american/canadian/mexican marriages as one spouse has basically given up their country and their identity in some ways and imagine saying something positive about your country and being told by people if you don't like it here go back to your own country, either way depending where they live, that's got to be tough.
i mean there's people here that are extremely protective of their own state! let alone their country, that's got to be stressful on a relationship/spouse.
especially when you factor in the inlaws.

All-purpose flour has been missing at WalMart, but not sugar or coffee.

528 We lost all of our liberties to stop the Chinese Apocalyptiflu and...whoops, the models were bullshit and the credentialed classes were wrong.

Better luck next time?

Stop fetishizing PhDs and realize they're all invested in something and want to peddle their bullshit at everyone else's expense.

532 Let's begin here. Cancel Ferguson's PBS series, "Networld." Dump him as a contributor to the Sunday Times and the Boston Globe. Terminate his senior fellow position at the Hoover Institution. Kill his column's syndication. Remove all his books and documentaries from Amazon and Netflix. Send him back to Old Blightey.

533 Ace, this one's not the right one to go after. The twitter takes significantly misinterpret his revised report. Take it from someone in the middle of it (us mil in europe), it's real and its horrible and it's not the fucking flu at all.

Motto of the Royal Society: "Take no one's word for it?" When are you experts going to start listening to the real scientists?

536 I'm wondering if there could be an open thread for people to *document* and *screenshot* the ridiculous apocalyptic predictions from the "experts" -- the statitisticians, the virologists, and the epidemioligists.

And perhaps a second open thread to document/link and screenshot the ridiculous predictions from the MSM.

Because this stuff -- the grotesque scamster predictions from Acknowledged Elite Experts -- will be memory-holed faster than any of us can blink unless we can gather the links and the screen shots to their claims.

537 Someone had mentioned elsewhere that we need to look into all these people who helped crash the world market; journalist, china, scientist, politicians, and see who had huge short sales on stocks or other financial interest in seeing things go down hill. Then they need to all be jailed and stripped of every penny they have.
