Saturday Morning Coffee Break

A-poem-for-mornings.jpg

Yup, I'm f*cking sick and tired of the Kung Flu as you are. Hmmm. Were there any events that occurred this past week which weren't Covid19 related? Let's take a look:

  • I wish he would have gotten the chance to target shoot.

  • Judas Priest we live in stupid, f*cking stupid times.

  • Whatever, it's not Coronavirus shit.

  • Not the brightest bulb in the pack.

  • Never judge a cosplay player but its cover.

  • Move over Father Guido Sarducci

  • Take it from an expert, PJs and a Robe are fine office attire. Home office that is.

  • The f*cking world has been wussified.

Rules? Open thread, no running with sharp objects, be kind to the 'ettes and play nice with one another.

Let's enjoy the weekend!!! Have a great weekend!!! Don't let The Man get you down.
If he does we could try to have a bail raising party.

In 1918, people died of all sorts of things that we

don't worry about. Bacterial infections were often deadly, a cut on the

hand or foot could spell doom. There was no effective treatment for TB,

and childhood diseases took a bigger toll, including scarlet fever.

A hundred years ago, deaths among the "otherwise healthy" were generally less of a shock

    Correct.
This "if it saves one life" garbage has got to stop. Yes people are
going to die from this disease. Most of them would have died within a
few months anyway even without the disease according to the famous
    Doctor in the UK.

But is "saving one life" worth it while intentionally destroying the World's economy?

    As
at at risk person, I don't think it's worth plunging the World into a

Seasonal flu, going by the low end estimate of 20,000 USA deaths is an average of 55 deaths per day.

H1N1, with 60,000 estimated dead over the course of April '09 to April '10 is an average of 164 deaths per day.

So I take it you are suggesting we stay in this 'stay-at-home' situation for the rest of time?

While we're at it, let's start banning foods and activities that lead to deaths from heart disease (610,000 USA deaths per year, 1,671 deaths per day). And when some health study comes out showing some link between some food or drink and cancer, well, time to ban it to prevent those deaths.

Exactly how far are you willing to keep liberty and freedom from people in this country to try to prevent people from dying?

There is a great quote in this article by Eisenberg about why he stays off social media:

Posted by: Commissar Hrothgar at March 28, 2020 09:14 AM (BiNEL)

52 To continue my line of thought:

It is possible for something to be both serious and over-hyped.

It is also possible to choose disproportionate measures for a serious threat.

What I take objection to is trivializing the threat by comparing it to dissimilar events.

The H1N1 flu was *not* handled correctly. I think we agree on that. It was not a "best practices" situation. So holding that up as "hey we lived through it," isn't a powerful argument.

Similarly, pointing out things like automotive deaths is also missing the point. Those fall in a very predictable range and when they spike, people notice. If a state had 90 additional road deaths over a two week periods with enough injured to close hospitals, people would not shrug it off.

The difficulty here is that the unknown unknowns have such a deadly upside, it's hard to know what is appropriate.

A disease that is spread by casual contact can only be contained via immunity or separation. We don't know how or even if to generate immunity, so separation is the imprecise tool we have left.

We must then question, how, where and for how long to employ it.

But that's a much more complex argument and probably less satisfying than calling people concern trolls.

It isn't about "saving one life," though, is it?

No one is saying that. It's a straw man.

The question is how to save as many lives as possible.

Indeed, the really hard part is that we don't know how many lives are at risk. We think we know, but the data is all over the place.

Going on what we have so far is like driving while looking exclusively at your rear-view mirror. You assume the trend lines will stay the same, but they're jumping all over the place.

The disease takes about 14 days to manifest. That means that if you do a shut down today, you won't know how many people were already infected for two weeks. Aggressive testing can help, but that also takes time.

On the flip side, this means that if the 14 days show zero stability, it didn't work and the focus should shift to treatment rather than isolation. I think that's what people are looking at.

But this was never about "saving one life."

My stance is that government should not deprive people of freedom and liberty.

Because of the actions taken here over what is amounting to the same as a bad flu season --- H1N1 was not the same, as it was disproportionately affecting the young and healthy --- precedent has now been set to where totalitarian Presidents and Governors can take away liberty for whatever they deem an emergency.

As I asked before, are you in favor of these measures for the 600,000 killed every year for heart disease? Are you in favor of banning foods and drinks like Cuomo and the Left does to protect people from themselves? How about all those studies which show connections between certain foods or drinks and cancer? Should we immediately ban them to protect people from themselves?

In my opinion, the totalitarian actions being taken by my Governor Whitmer and other Democrat Governors are being taken, because like all totalitarians they don't trust people with freedom and liberty. Their instinct is to take control and ban things or tax things (food, drink, cigarettes, vaping, freedom, liberty).

So, in my opinion, we are not fighting back against this enough. These Governors should know that We, the People, are NOT going to accept these totalitarian actions.

But there are far too many people making the argument that instead of having faith in the American people to act responsibly, the right thing to do is to take away their freedom and liberty.

89 So, I ought to write today, but I've got this gnawing depression. I's sure part of it is being "confined," (though MA has not issued a shelter in place order) and I'm sure part of it is the steady drumbeat of bad news plus my usual internal cocktail of bile and hatred, but it seems to be overwhelming lately.

I just look at my notebook, ponder for a while and then wander off, which only makes me feel worse.

I just brewed a second cup of tea. I think when I finish it I'll take a little walk and then settle in and watch Cleopatra. Maybe I can write tomorrow after the book thread.

I agree that auto statistics cannot be a one for one comparison to a contagious disease, yet they do illustrate the concept of a roughly constant "background" death rate which society has obviously deemed acceptable. That same concept also applies to death rate by age, diabetes, heart problems, etc.

The initial epidemic data is NEVER binned in this manner, so the automatic assumption is that we are all gonna die based on statistics accumulated on people that did indeed die and had the "disease" (but may have also had many other health factors that could have contributed to each of those deaths.)

The key problem is that we want to expect competence and honesty in the public officials that should have an understanding of this, but who almost always fail us at their "One Job".

One woman there,, Viktoryia Nasyrova, is in the infirmary and sahe says nobody is there to clean properly. She's afraid they're all going to drop dead there and they're all scared. There is some black humor (I guess I'm not a nice person) in the fact, that Ms. Nasyroya is described as a "Russian born dominatrix who allegedly tried to kill a Queens woman with a slice of poisoned cheesecake."

All of the things you cited are known risks, and therefore irrelevant to the discussion at hand.

As to your larger question about liberty, throughout history people have had to subordinate the individual in order to save the larger group.

People bring up WW II, and it's a good example. Ten percent of the population was put into compulsory military service.

Everything was rationed - food, clothing, gasoline. Whole sectors of the economy were commandeered.

    Was that extreme?

What about laws regarding sanitation? Is California doing the right thing regarding defecation in the public streets?

The fact is that public health in an epidemic can't be settled on an individual basis.

The question is figuring out how to curb the spread. Telling folks to take a couple of weeks off may be ineffective at halting the spread of disease, but it is also very different from shutting down all economic activity forever.

In fact, we have disruptions like that all the time, such as hurricanes, blizzards, etc. It's called being resilient. We've gotten very complacent to think that a fortnight of slowed activity equals global doom.

I am still surprised people have been so supportive of President Trump and his team through this.

Sure, he has not himself ordered 'stay-at-home' orders, but he and his team are putting out the information that every Governor is using to make their 'stay-at-home' order decisions.

Dr Fauci is connected to Deep Stater Hillary Clinton and the corrupt China-bought WHO. And it's his "we're all gonna die!" advice that started all this.

I asked on a previous thread a couple days ago... what if a President Hillary were doing the exact same things President Trump has been doing? And Governors all over the country were taking her advice and shutting down states.

    During an election year.

Think we'd all be on here during all her daily briefings praising her? I doubt it.

[Granted, if Hillary were President, we'd all be going about our lives as normal right now, because COVID-19 would have been treated just as H1N1 was treated.]

143 Speaking of Trump, watched some of his appearances on Letterman, BBC, some others talk and news shows. One from 1980 (!) when he was barely in his 30s. Some from mid-late 1980s. Then a few from the 1990s. Contrast - before and after his two divorces, a bankruptcy and a comeback. I liked the BBC interview from 1998 (https://tinyurl.com/y3bga9tr). In interviews prior to late 90's you see seeds of what has become President Donald Trump. In 1998 he is almost what we see today. Some themes of his are not new. In the 1980s he talked about Japan taking advantage of US. In one interview Letterman is pushing him about running for president (in 1980s !). He demures. Most appearances are tied to release of his books. The Art of the Deal, The Art of the Comeback.

My feeling right now, just from people I know personally, is that most people will grudgingly put up with it for about 2 weeks. After that, I think a solid majority are going to agree with you, Clyde. At that point, we better open back up in many ways, or we're going to start seeing significant civil unrest, although I can't predict the form that will take. See the Chinese videos posted yesterday for what that looks like when a people gets fed up with what's being done to them.

    153 Hi y'all-

Let's see what my dad was up to on March 28, 1944 on the Anzio beach head. Looks like his unit was welcoming in some new 8 inch howitzers while the Germans were launching an ineffectual bombing raid on Anzio and Nettuno with substantial German aircraft losses to antiaircraft batteries and British Spitfire fighters.

    28 Mar.
[Margin note: 194th Bn, 8 in[ch] Hows, came in.] In our first daylight raid for sometime, Gerry sent over about 40 planes. Bombs dropped in water - no damage. When it was all over AA had downed 8 and Spits 3. Not a bad show.

Well, to be honest, it was a ridiculously wasteful production. Beyond the padding, stealing and double-entry bookkeeping endemic to any Hollywood production, you have to remember that the original director, Ruben Mamoulian, wasted 7 million shooting 10 minutes of footage - none with Taylor - in England, then, when Mankiewicz took over without a script, actors like Hume Cronin were kept on for months at a time, not working, at a salary of $5000 a week.

But yes, as far as costumes, sets and locations, it is a lavish, no-holds-barred production. I glory in it, but Cleopatra is my kind of movie.

I'd take the kill numbers with a grain of salt. AA gunners were some of the worst out there in terms of double-counting kills.

I'm not saying it was intentional, just part of the confusion. Bomber crews were notoriously bad in overestimating kills, but also some of the bravest men in the war.

171 I guess the two things about this COVID-19 silliness that bother me the most are:

    1. There is no attempt by the general public to demand to see the assumptions and the underlying methodology or analysis that was used to justify the shutdown.

    2. There is a definite lack of willingness on the general public's part to tell local governments that are acting like tyrants to FOAD, and to go about normally with just a few extra precautions for being exposed to a flu-like contagion.

Anyone with two brain cells that rub together knows that government is gonna take advantage of anything extends their power and increases tax revenue.

What we're seeing now is exactly what people like Hamilton, Madison, Jay, and Jefferson warned us about. And very few seem to care. But hey, they're gonna get a $1200 payout so it's all good, right?

I have experienced it! I rarely remember my dreams. But, the one from last night - I am on a train I think, talking to some lady, and then she tells me she is on, get this, Zero Hedge and gives me her screen name. And then I wake up ! WTH ??!! I don't remember what she was telling me before she told me about Zero Hedge. So don't ask.

    ---
It isn't about "saving one life," though, is it?

I strongly disagree. I've seen very robust and highly public debates about models and calculations.

The problem is that there are no reliable numbers. At that point, everything's an assumption.

So what do you do in that situation? Cross your fingers and hope we "power through?"

That's basically the H1N1 response. Does anyone consider that ideal? A model to be repeated?

This is like the Battle of the Atlantic - there's a lag built into figuring out what works and what doesn't.

Churchill wrote that it was the only thing that ever truly frightened him, and it bothered him that the only way they could track it was by watching a damned line move across paper charts.

Same thing applies here. Shutdowns will take two weeks to be effective. So we wait and try to get tests out there.

In about a week we'll have a better idea what's going on.

The last time I saw Ben Hur was when I was in high school. One of the local L. A. stations broadcast it, with much fanfare, with the first hour or more being commercial-free. Well, I guess they made up fir it later in the movie, because commercial breaks started getting longer and more frequent. Toward tge end, they were showing five minutes of movie, then five minutes of commercials. It was a death-march to get to the end.

207 149 Assessing the size of the economic downturn, will require continuous reassessment of the scale of the damage, just like the virus. I will not hold against someone changing their mind."

The difference between the situations is that with the virus, we don't really know all of the key numbers - we're guessing, based on incomplete information. We have no choice at the moment.

With the economy, on the other hand, we DO know how that's going to progress, the world has seen deflationary death spirals before. It's one of the sets of circumstances that capitalist societies usually do not survive, and ours may not survive this one. As shutdowns begin at the retail level, they magnify throughout all parts of supply chain, and unemployment grows until *all* private business, except those which sell to the government or which serve the government, are gone. Who's going to buy new cars, for example, at 50% unemployment? Who's going to build new cars when none are being bought? Apply that model to every single consumer good.

Our plan, currently, is.... interesting. We're going to try to meet the greatest deflationary wave in history, a hit that is going to be 2 - 3 times WORSE than the depths of the Great Depression, with the greatest government sponsored Inflationary wave since Germany, 1923. Can we calibrate this so precisely that the two balance each other and we achieve stability? That's what we're trying to pull off.

219 171 I guess the two things about this COVID-19 silliness that bother me the most are:

Posted by: CrotchetyOldJarhead at March 28, 2020 09:49 AM

    This.

    Especially point #1.

And it goes to show that the media --- no matter how many people ignorantly say that people don't believe them --- has immense power.

Remember what they do regarding the Israel-"Palestine" conflict. Staging photos, censoring anything bad regarding "Palestine", not reporting on human shields, etc. They did the same thing in the Israel-Lebanon conflict.

And they do the same thing with the illegal immigration issue. Remember the lies about "children in cages" and "children separated from their families", etc.

And of course, we all know how they have been propagandizing about the "threat" of "global warming" for decades. To great success, as we have taxes and government regulations and bans affecting every industry in the country.

This COVID-19 situation is no different. They show Italy as a tragedy, but do not bother to show the demographics of the deaths. Don't bother to inform people that Italy is counting anyone who dies now to be a COVID-19 death.

They don't bother to talk about the cruise ship numbers and death rate and demographics.

They don't bother to give any perspective of anything. Don't compare to seasonal flu, don't compare to H1N1, don't explain that likely millions of people have H1N1 and with more testing, that will show that the mortality rate is more in line with seasonal flu.

The fact is that the media still has immense power and we are learning that a scary number of Americans believe everything they say and are even willing to give up their freedom and liberty based on what they say.

    Very worrisome for the future.

232 The question is figuring out how to curb the spread.

We are currently at something like 900 confirmed cases with 15 dead. While that mortality rate sounds bad, it is skewed by the fact that only the more seriously ill are getting tested. If this virus is so dangerously outside the norm, shouldn't these cruise ships have become full of the dead and dying?

To watch anything like that on commercial broadcast is excruciating - same for any long film. But when it's on TCM or available uncut and uninterrupted, I never miss it, and probably have seen it at least 20 times. I love the music too much, that is one of the best mid-century orchestral scores written, in fact I usually watch it JUST for the music. I can hear it in my head as a I type!

It's also fascinating to compare the Charlton Heston version with the earlier silent version from the 20's, especially since they were both made by DeMille. The earlier version was much more true to the book, and focused much more on the politics of the day. But over the years, DeMille realized that people didn't want all of the political infighting, they wanted Roman Pageantry and the Spectacle of the Arena - and he was right, and he did it brilliantly. The Naval War scene, just to pick one of the set pieces, is probably the best film depiction of ancient naval warfare ever made, and a LOT of fun to watch!

241 Now, this may not be to everyone's taste, but a week ago, I saw The Honeymoon Killers, a 1971 movie about the real-life murderers Richard Fernandez and Martha Beck, who, in the 1940s ran a "lonely hearts" scam on older women, with Fernandez scamming them out of their money and either he or Beck (or both) then killing them.

It was originally to be directed by Martin Scorsese, who was fired after a few days because he was too slow.

It's a BandW film, very "cinema verite" and almost claustrophobic in its camera angles. It teeters at points towards MSTK3000 territory, but is still a chilling film, and one worth watching, I think.

A crisis will bring out the best and worst in people. It will show you all their real intentions, weaknesses and their abilities as a leader. There's not a lot of time for bluster, nor room for the usual political head fakes. It has to come from intuition.

It most certainly is. Because so long there is one death reported in any area, the Mayor or Governor is going to keep the area on 'stay-at-home' orders.

So those talking about "2 weeks" or "15 days" being a-okay are fooling themselves. Cuomo probably screwed up when he let it slip that he expected this to last months.

I understand why, although I don't like it or agree with it. They're scared that with a crowded and unsavory population, any infection could quickly run rampant throughout the entire population. And when that happened, *every* guard and officer would catch it in turn, because the inmates would be trying to give it to them. (you know they would)

so this is basically the Prison system saying "hey we ain't takin' that risk, here's the keys, all you guys go home now." They're choosing to protect themselves over protecting us.

(now if I was Dictator, I could think of a much simpler way to guarantee that disease never spread throughout the prison, while simultaneously guaranteeing absolute protection for the citizenry.)

260 1925 Ben Hur was one of the earliest scandalously-expensive near flops. They had to pull out of Italy, and rebuild a lot of sets back home in California to avoid wasting thousands of feet of film. Changed directors a couple of times, all the things Hollywood became famous for years later.

The maritime sequence was filmed at Anzio. Rumors are that military authorities thought they had superior intel for that site because of notes from the film crew, and that's why that beach was chosen. The original was a near fiasco: extras lied about being able to swim, there were accidents with typically south-Italian levels of record-keeping, and fights broke out between fascists and the other left.

In just the same way that I laugh up my sleeve whenever someone remakes a Charlton Heston film, the 1959 Heston film was laughed at by serious critics. Why the hell would you re-shoot the greatest footage ever framed?

268 A trifle late to the coffee party, but I thought I'd drop in. Going to be hot today, so I'm going out to touch up a couple of paint nicks on my car, which I washed earlier, and then I'll retreat indoors again.

You know, this quarantine thing isn't a whole lot different from what I have to do all summer (approx. 9 months of it) in this nasty swamp. I huddle indoors and wait for the sun to go down -- though the temps don't cool off much even then. The only real difference is that I'm not commuting to and from work.

The problem is we don't know.

There are no numbers. The H1N1 ran its course. It's in the books. We can graph it, chart it, measure it.

Honestly, it's like U-boat warfare. The Allies had the example of WW I in terms of how to defeat them and even the cool new ASDIC technology, which the Brits thought was pretty much a super-weapon.

But it wasn't a replay, and new tactics (and weapons) were needed. This was only discovered from new numbers.

By the way, there's no cause to be disrespectful in this discussion. Right now the question is how one estimates risk and I'm honest that I don't know.

No one else knows, either, which is I think the big source of tension regarding this.

Of COURSE he was, *Every* official in Venezuela has been heavily involved in that trade for years now. It truly is the best example of a Narco-gang taking over an entire state that we've ever seen.

But this particular guy was only available for arrest because he was hiding out in Columbia because he had changed his tune and become one of Maduro's greatest critics. Kind of like a Trotsky hiding out in Mexico City. Maduro so far is just laughing at us taking out his enemies for him.

    Please stop being rational...

Actually, your point is spot on, we have a contagious disease, with a source vector from the open society of Chinese Communism, with no insight as to how and when the initial disease outbreak spread. Initially all we had was a very few spotty and incomplete data points, but it was clear it was contagious.

My concern has always been that given only a few out of context data points, I can probably model an epidemic that will kill the entire population of the earth in a matter of months.

    How do you figure?

My horizon for knowing if measures are effective is a couple of weeks.

Climate change is based on far greater disruption that will only be capable of evaluation in a century.

If anything, this is showing just how feeble climate modeling is because the models aren't consistent and don't agree with each other.

The main point of disagreement between us I think is that you (and a lot of others here) are overestimating the economic risk while I lean on the side of worrying about the health risk.

I think our economy will come roaring back once restrictions are lifted. I see people rapidly adjusting to the new conditions, businesses retooling for medical supplies -heck, my local store has toilet paper again!

I also think that if a lot of people do end up dying or getting really sick, that will cause more severe and long-term damage to the economy.

If people start keeling over, no one will go to work regardless of what the government says.

It's not an easy call to make, that's for sure.

    376 AHLloyd:

The 'we have to take drastic action because if we don't a large number of people will die' argument has some inherent weaknesses.

    1. There is not a direct-line correlation between the action being taken and either a single individual life saved, or a supposed decrease in total deaths. It's pure supposition. And even if there is a decrease in lives lost, it won't be 100%, and nobody on this blog including me can cite what that number will be. It will be some lesser and unmeasurable percentage. This is NOT comparable to a "do you jump. in the river to save a drowning stranger's life?" question.

    2. The negative or adverse effects are largely unknown and unmeasurable at this stage, but no less real. These are not merely economic, but also involve psychological, individual, familial, national and international relations. Suicides? Violent crime? Ripples upon ripples. They can tear at the very fabric of civilization. Pretending that they should not be considered in these decisions is short-sighted.

    3. Stating that your moral position is the only valid opinion and that others who don't share your view are flawed too dumb to appreciate your particular analysis is never a good way to convert others to your viewpoint.

This is all just a variation on the lifeboat dilemma.

The carnage is widespread. Many small businesses will fail, will not buy from their suppliers, will not employ people, who will not have much money to spend. The 401(k)s that lost 20-30% (so far) will put a damper on spending (I don't feel so wealthy); Retirees creamed. All this speaks to reduced demand from a roaring economy in February.

It's a cartoon (from one of those comedy networks I don't watch), featuring Tyson, in something of a sendup of Scooby Doo type shows.

One thing I never would have predicted is the complete image change for a guy like Tyson. I never thought he'd live this long, let alone turn into a thoughtful, funny, irreverent fella who absolutely does not take himself too seriously.

The show is crude, but it's the fact that Tyson is willing to do something like this that is so revealing.

IANM, the economy in 1918 was heavily agricultural, and localized industries such as steel, oil, and manufacturing. Most industrial resources were obtainable in-house; i.e.: within the US. As a national power, we had a much more limited position to leverage.

Today, we're highly diversified and some of the industries we have now did not exist in 1918, and those that did are orders of magnitude more advanced and numerous. Our supply chain is nationally as well as internationally based but we are also more dependent on foreign resources in some cases. We have a much stronger position in the world economy to use as leverage.

For me, I don't think the comparison is even close. Making an assumption on the economic impact of this silliness based on 1918 is a non-starter.

know of dozens of businesses, in my own daily life, that will *never*

    limited!

No, this economy is *NOT* going to come roaring back. We will be
doing very well just to get it back to being self sustaining by this
fall's election. But Morgan Stanley (and the rest of the top level
forecasters) are predicting a 20% to 30% DROP in GDP for just the 2nd
quarter - that is MORE damage than happened in all of the years of the
    Great Depression, combined.

I'm getting bombarded by creditors offering forbearance on loans, lines of credit, etc. so I'm curious.

It's interesting because the same arguments people are making about Wuhan Virus (only kills the old and sick) can be made about the businesses affected (only hitting the ones that were marginal in the first place).

One difference is that I don't see anyone making the latter argument, but a fair number making the former.

Which is why I'm not making that argument. My point is and has been that we don't know.

So what do you do? What action can be taken to cope with a mysterious disease that's lethality and treatment options are largely unknown?

The real annoying thing about it is that the stronger the action on the front end (to stop the spread) the more effective it will be.

Conversely, if it is successful, there will be less observable consequences on the health front compared to the economic losses.

The flip side is that if one waits to see just how bad it can get due to known, actual economic damage, the only tools that might have been effective to contain it are now lost.

    Such situations defy easy answers.

434 the death rate chart should tell us more than new cases, but even that does not tell us comorbidities, or how many died a month ago without being tested. But deaths in the ot spots do go "exponential" and we don't seem past that point yet, not even if taking the "hot spots separately (like NY, but I haven't tried to actually chart that)

And what I really want to see is the chart of those testing positive, and then treated with the hydroxycholoquine and Z-Pak ... because isolated locationns on that seem to be in the "700 infect, one death" ... range.

Tucker did a segment saying he thought the real reason the Nevada gov issued the order (to limit the HCQ-Z-Pak to hospitals only) was that there was a shortage of the doc, and Tucker said (without showing "evidence") that doctors were hoarding it, for future treatment or their own families I guess.

A week or so ago I heard a report that some U.S. generic drug maker was starting to produce the HCQ ... and maybe another in Israel ... but also heard there is a lot on hand. So ... this should be part of the headlines ... but instead we debate how bad Trump is, and whether he will kill us all by lettig people out of their boxes too early.

445 Speaking of narcing. Polis issued a stay at home order for Colorado. We do not have NYC level of cases so its stupid on its face but its not a real order. Cops wont even issue warnings unless there are more than 10 people in a group or folks are violating social distancing. The STATE parks are still open. Self pay for parking, picnic areas and campgrounds closed but day parking is fine.

I dont know if the order gives the cops more 'teeth' to issue tickets for those violating the no large gatherings or swapping spit in public, but I do despise laws/rules that don't mean what they say.

I can see your point. I do think there will be a significant demand for those small local businesses by people, if for no other reason than they are the folks you did see most often when you went out for "X."

483 some of the health care workers in interviews or their instagram talks, have said how we need to get the masks to the heath care workers first. And we've seen some groups release millions they had in stock for some reason (was it the UAW?, and some others).

And I saw a second report of a nurse saying they were given one mask and told to use it all week unless it is soiled/dirty. That is hard to believe ... we are really THAT short on this stuff? I guess they did just in time inventory, and China cut us off.
But for one thing, a mask is certainly soiled after one day, or less. I agree the health care workers should get priority, but once the supply catches up (and the hoarders stop buying 10 year supplies, like the TP) ... then requiring the general public to wear a mask when out might be as effective as telling everyone to stay home. Or maybe a mask and gloves, if we can catch up on those as well. And diligent surface cleaning in public spaces.

One of the numbers I've been watching is the number of "Active Cases". The number of deaths seems pretty low right now but the number of recovered cases isn't much bigger.

Total Cases in the US are now around 105K. And the number of Active Cases is 100K meaning the vast majority of cases are yet to be resolved. Cuomo said yesterday that one of the deaths in NYC had been on a ventilator for 20+ days. I don't even play a doctor here but it would seem to me trying to peg the death rate now is counting unhatched chickens.

Hopefully, some of these new treatments will be ready soon and effective so we can move out of the buying time phase and into the active fighting the disease stage before we lose too many more.

Posted by: No One of Consequence at March 28, 2020 11:02 AM

My guess is that these official orders --- instead of just recommendations --- will give law enforcement more authority to tell people to go home if people are not out doing 'essential' activities.

Before, when it was just Governors asking the people of their states to practice 'social distancing' and such, law enforcement had no authority to do anything with people who were telling their Mayors and Governors to lolgf. Now, they do have the authority and can reference the official 'stay-at-home' order.

It's also probably like declaring a state emergency or whatever is done during tornadoes and hurricanes: states who declare that get federal funding. This is probably no different. Any state declaring "stay-at-home" orders are probably now on the list for federal handouts.

530 I am wondering if this is the Jim Jones moment for the left.

I know there is an arc to millenarian movements, where there is a charismatic message, a gathering of a flock to survive into the coming new world, a series of approaching dangers to try to weld it all together against the fact that people tend to fight and wander away, and from there each danger becomes greater until you are literally facing the end of the world.

This of course is the big payoff, in the People's Church the final act was to prevent the faithful from being taken so of course they had to commit suicide en mass.

    does anyone have any insight?

547 I was wondering why some healthy young people get COVID-19 and get mild symptoms and are done, while other healthy young people die. Coronavirii are very common across the world, many derived from native bat species (Alpha and Beta subgroups, according to Wikipedia. The other two subgroups come from birds and pigs). I wonder of some the people that get milder reactions to infection had been previously infected by a coronavirus, and their immune system had a broad enough reaction that when they got COVID-19, their body recognized it as a problem pretty fast and shut it down. From the CDC website, the most common coronaviruses are alpha and beta subgroup virii.
