I've been to a couple of plant nurseries in the last few days. They are mobbed because they are about the only places that are open- I talked to lots of people who said that they were there because they were going stir-crazy just sitting at home all day. Nice way to stop and smell the flowers since all of the arboretums are closed.
Posted by: Moonbeam at March 25, 2020 08:23 PM (qe5CM) Not sure what state you guys are in that are allowing any retail business that isn't food or pharmacy to have "mobs". Here in Michigan, if you are an "essential" business, you cannot have more than five people inside the store at a time. No lines allowed outside either. Local gun shop got the ok to open, but they have to follow the five people at a time in the store. Call ahead and place/pay for your order and they will have it ready for you. Don't come in the store just to "look around", you need to come in with a mission. Range is closed. Don't form a line, you have to wait in your car. And more on the American ingenuity, necessity is the mother of invention front. Some doctors and engineers somewhere have figured out how to make makeshift ventilators for about $100 in parts. They're still testing it, but it looks good. Locally, docs and engineers from somewhere (don't remember if it was Clemson or USC) managed to create a device that would allow 4 people to share a ventilator. They are 3D printing it, and it's good to go. They based it on some "hacking" other doctors had used in dire situations to put multiple patients on the same ventilator. I just checked and the dice version of the game seems to be available for the usual price ($40). The dice version is called Pandemic: The Cure and I actually like it better than the original. It sets up quickly, plays smoothly, and if you lose it's easy to just set it up again and play once more. And in my opinion the various jobs are extremely well-balanced such that I'm willing to play with just random draws of who gets what job; when playing the original I always want someone playing the Medic. https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/150658/pandemic-cure Posted by: mr_jack at March 25, 2020 08:46 PM (57l0O) 318

It's gonna make their actions after the '08 Crash look conservative. The Fed is planning on going YOLO. They are going to buy, backstop, and bailout everything. BUY ALL THE THINGS!!! PRINTING PRESSES TO LUDICROUS SPEED!!! In the stimulus bill, there was/is a provision to grant the Fed the authority to buy stocks and corporate bonds directly. Won't know until it's passed if that goes through. The Fed is already buying corporate bonds through the SPV (special purpose vehicle) tricks, I see. Also, there is a version of the Pandemic board game that implements a "legacy" game mechanic. You play the game multiple times, but you don't reset to the starting conditions; things that happen as you play are permanent. If, in your first time playing, London gets killed off by the pandemic, then on subsequent play-throughs London is still dead. I think the "season" is 12 plays... it's supposed to be incredibly engrossing.
It was so successful that there have been a wave of other "legacy" games, but from reviews I have read it's the best "legacy" game. So if your COVID-19 sheltering somehow lets you hang out with others who would play this with you, maybe give it a try. https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/161936/pandemic-legacy-season-1 P.S. I'm not aware of any online play version of Pandemic, but there is a similar game whose theme is fighting fires (rather than fighting disease outbreaks). The game is called Flashpoint: Fire Rescue and there is a game on Steam that allows online play: https://store.steampowered.com/app/654220/Flash_Point_Fire_Rescue/ I haven't tried this Steam game, but I have played the original board game and I like it even better than Pandemic. Bourbon thread? Been agitatin' for one for a while.
Actually somewhere there's a blog that's good for those seeking bourbon lore and knowledge, haven't looked for it - might've been linked on one ONT ages ago. Meanwhile, I will be punished for not taking more notes while reloading (certain kinds). Since part of the game is to extract max use out of everything, I aspired to doing the 0.002" setback on 30-06 brass shoulder, to stretch brass life. Have all kinds of "semi" notes and measurements etc. from the first time around, but nothing giving an intelligible bottom line. A few test resizings and looks like I'm setting shoulder back 0.005" or even more. Lazy escape rationale with a bit of actual logic: since I plan to scrap all these cases after 3-4 reloadings anyway (safety), don't sweat it. Saying "Things were such-and-such way in The Victorian Era" is like saying "Things were such-and-such way in the 20th century." You really can't say anything was one way or another "in the 20th century" because social attitudes and fashions and everything else changed overwhelmingly multiple times during that period. Social mores and women's hats were different in 1914 than they were in 1974.
Well, the Victorian era wasn't quite as long as the 20th century, but close -- 1837-1901. Two-thirds of a century. During those 64 years, the world turned upside down in ways that would boggle even our contemporary minds. EVERYTHING that made the modern world appeared in 1837-1901. Cars, electricity, recorded sound, photography, movies, the industrial world, etc. etc. etc. Fashions and social attitudes and the class system also changed immensely multiple times. You simply can't summarize "the Victorian era" with any blanket statement. Posted by: zombie at March 25, 2020 09:18 PM (N9G0H) 500

I'd thought that it slipped in under the "things needed for maintaining residences" exemption, and maybe it did, but the guy pointed out that turning a bunch of pools into algae-filled standing water was a really bad idea from a public health point of view.
He did say that he'd gotten some people who didn't have pools at all, but were smart enough to look there for chlorine (double-strength, even), after everyone else ran out. Posted by: Splunge at March 25, 2020 09:19 PM (dOV9E) 504
Yield curve news: T-bill yields on everything under 3 months has gone negative. This means people are now paying the govt to lend them money on the short term. This is the Fed's monetary bukake already in action, and even just the threat of it. It's going sideways because stocks were rallying. Again, the Fed's actions are breaking normal correlations. We're in day 5 of this lockdown and I go out to work everyday, Mrs. E goes out if she wants, we have food for a LONG time, and electricity so far. And I'm voting to reelect President Donald Trump so he can keep kicking dem/commie/media/deepstate asses.

If you want a pretty picture of how much money the Fed has printed so far, look at FRED's graph of the monetary base to date: https://fred.stlouisfed.org/series/BOGMBASE Now, what they're gonna do is make that previous monetary bukake look pitiful. And note the related bit of monetary porn, how much federal debt has been monetized by the Fed: https://fred.stlouisfed.org/series/FDHBFRBN Again, the Fed is gonna make that look tame. The Fed is gonna by buying Ts like there's no tomorrow to cover this $2T of stimulus. Monetary bukake. We're gonna be dripping. Posted by: publius, Rascally Rapscallion of a Poperin Pear at March 25, 2020 09:03 PM (rCwaK) Fed or no Fed, the problem is that if you have money, no matter if it's gold coins, cloth, paper, etc...you NEED to exchange money for 1) a good or 2) a service. If you are not paying money for 1) a good or 2) a service, you will get inflation. Therefore, it pays to keep government spending to a minimum, and to the greatest extent possible, see to it that money goes to 1) a good or 2) a service. No one wants to keep that in mind. Especially elected officials. Posted by: Catch Thirty-Thr33 at March 25, 2020 09:20 PM (Exv3s) 507
Love the WWII advice booklet. WWII training films and manuals are awesome. I've mentioned before, somewhere here, the kind of English one hears, fairly standard, in those films. And these were films aimed at training the entire cohort of 18-22 yr-olds, and recall the level of formal "education" in the country in 1942, vs. now.
Yeah. Pretty depressing. Posted by: rhomboid at March 25, 2020 09:20 PM (El6T/) 508

It is our 48th anniversary today.
How to celebrate under current conditions? We went to our gym . . . (in our garage) and did our usual workout. Then, we had a beer at the bar (barbell). Later, we got all dressed up to eat out (on our deck). I tipped our waiter (grandson) some chocolate chip cookies. Took pictures put them on facebook to share with friends and family. They want the plague to continue forever. At least until November 3. They panic at the hopeful stats, not the doomsday stats. Shortages and financial collapse remind them of their beloved USSR. They so so want this to continue.
