The Presbyterian church called a meeting to decide what to do about their squirrel infestation. After much prayer and consideration, they concluded that the squirrels were predestined to be there, and they shouldn't interfere with God's divine will. At the Baptist church the squirrels had taken an interest in the baptistery. The deacons met and decided to put a water-slide on the baptistery and let the squirrels drown themselves. The squirrels liked the slide and unfortunately, knew instinctively how to swim, so twice as many squirrels showed up the following week. The Lutheran church decided that they were not in a position to harm any of God's creatures. So, they humanely trapped their squirrels and set them free near the Baptist church. Two weeks later the squirrels were back when the Baptists took down the water-slide. The Episcopalians tried a much more unique path by setting out pans of whiskey around their church in an effort to kill the squirrels with alcohol poisoning. They sadly learned how much damage a band of drunk squirrels can do.
But the Catholic church came up with a very creative strategy! They baptized all the squirrels and made them members of the church. Now they only see them at Christmas and Easter. And not much was heard from the Jewish synagogue. They took the first squirrel and circumcised him. They haven't seen a squirrel since.

Like any good Florida story, this one begins with a naked couple brawling inside a car parked at the mall. Estimate for next week is the Fed will "print" at a rate of about $100B per day. That's slacking off a bit, it was about $125B per day when they first started last week.

Everyone's kinda faking the numbers so far with limited testing. Western countries can't hide the death count as easily as the Chinese, but infection numbers are way low.
Minnesota has an official state wide count of 441 infections as of this morning, and there's just no way in hell that's anywhere close to reality.
County medical center in Minneapolis basically says on their website that you shouldn't bother asking for a test unless you're already falling outta bed sick.

Apparently everything useful that's been done was done locally, as the EU can't seem to make a decision. Further there was apparently a shipment of supplies bound for the UK that France simply seized "because they needed it."

I avoid it whenever possible. I bought games from the 1970s for the grandsons, and I've bought sets of dishes, glasses, etc from the US. I buy US crafting supplies, and I go out of my way to avoid Chinese goods, going BC (before China) when needed. I work hard at this and I'd rather spend a bit more and not buy from the enemy (I also avoid Turkish products)
Some stuff is almost impossible to avoid, but even with the grandsons here all day, I bought some nice made in US phonics and spellers, and I have a lot of the HBJ books I bought for my own kids.
Yep, I get a few things from Amazon, but not as many from China as you'd think

I don't like big cities. The only thing going for them is a variety of cuisines and the fact you can walk and get some exercise getting to places.
I like seeing green, hence my love of suburbs and rural-ish areas. And never having to parallel park.
However, most people I know wonder why I live here.
It's all personal preference.
But of course, my opinion is the correct one.

I don't like big cities. The only thing going for them is a variety of cuisines and the fact you can walk and get some exercise getting to places.
I like seeing green, hence my love of suburbs and rural-ish areas. And never having to parallel park.
But of course, my opinion is the correct one.

Had a '74 Hornet, back in the day. It was (I dunno the actual name of the color) what I called Bug-guts Green-- somewhere between lime green and chartreuse, I guess.
Funny thing about it: it apparently had a safety interlock on the ignition system: had to have a certain amount of weight on the front (bench) seat in order to start it... Only, hahaha, it malfunctioned so that everyone in front had to lift their asses OFF the front seat before it would start!
I suppose it was due to previous owner disabling the seatbelt alarm, but who knows...

That was a particularly lame article, wasn't it? I owned a Crosley, once, but it was a '48, which had a nicer grille, and a cast iron engine, which was the best part of the car (and went on being made, for various uses, long after the demise of the car).

Ever the dogged optimist, I'm hanging on for more - Brexit was a nice ratchet turn, waiting at least for another -exit, or maybe Germany's coming recession will finally force it to reduce its props to the wastrels and currency.

No. I really haven't done anything that would be risky behavior. My contacts have been family and the grandsons have been out of school for 2 weeks already. I wear an n95 to the grocery store and only shop about 45min before close.
Ultimately, I'm hoping they can crank out enough plaquenil and azithromycin. Roualt's work has me thinking that this is the ticket. he meds are old enough to have a known side effect profile, and I'm hoping even donks see reason on this

It looked much better as a roadster, believe me. A mechanical and electrical nightmare, too. Friend of mine had one. The 5-speed transmission piled up, big time. Two thousand dollars for a new one. So we went and got a "low miles" Mazda RX7 engine and transmission for about $800, and I did the swap. We could not make the "Thermal Reactor" emission device fit, so we had a set of tube headers made up instead. The car sounded like a flock of chainsaws flying in formation, but it ran great.
The Mazda transmission failed right out of the box, but the engine dealer replaced on warranty, and the replacement lasted.
And remarkably, all the electrical gadgets on the mazda engine hooked up with and worked fine with their counterparts in the Triumph dash: oil pressure gauge, oil level lamp, temperature gauge, coolant level lamp, tachometer, and alternator telltale lamp. I almost believe that Triumph intended to offer that with a rotary engine, but got cold feet during the gas crisis.

Oh, and this gem. Neil Ferguson is the lead guy in that Apocalyptic coronavirus report from the Imperial College. Some of his colleagues (and rivals) are pointing out he doesn't have such a hot record. He was responsible for the UK overreaction to hoof and mouth disease which cost them a bundle economically.
That hoof and mouth model was described as "unfit for purpose".

Well one major advantage of a rotary engine is it's incredible power to size ratio.
You can pull a rotary out of a car without a hoist and rebuild it on a 5 gallon bucket.

No. I really haven't done anything that would be risky behavior. My contacts have been family and the grandsons have been out of school for 2 weeks already. I wear an n95 to the grocery store and only shop about 45min before close.
Ultimately, I'm hoping they can crank out enough plaquenil and azithromycin. Roualt's work has me thinking that this is the ticket. he meds are old enough to have a known side effect profile, and I'm hoping even donks see reason on this

They're scared they'll be blamed if cases in their state start to ramp up, which all of their advisers who watch CNN 24 hours a day tell them will happen. They see no personal downside from being too cautious, especially when others are doing it, and a huge personal downside from the risk of not doing it.
So for them, it's an easy call. It's all about their personal political aspirations for the future. They couldn't care less about esoteric questions like "right" and "wrong".

Lock down those federal funds as soon as possible, get the easy graft (which is always up front), create a (paid) study commission or two (preferably populated with friends and relatives), then eventually tell your subjects I did it "out of an abundance of caution"!

This, pretty much. One advisory to avoid gatherings over 500 became somone else's ban on groups over 250, became a ban on groups over 100, became an advisory (because the 'experts' at the CDC can't give up the limelight) for no groups of 10 or more, became a ban on groups of 10 or more, became the cascading orders to close restaurants and bars to everything.
That process all because if you don't ban more than the last guy, you're just playing copycat.
At this point, the issue is inertia, and the fact that as soon as you admit the lockdown isn't necessary, you get to start answering questions over whether it was ever necessary. Note that Cuomo was already doing that Thursday despite the current situation in NYC.

That's logarithmic graph, which is very useful for. An exponential reduces to a nice linear straight line. That allows you to see the doubling rate.
You'll note that it starts to turn down on all the curves indicating it is slowing from the initial exponential.

Again, I think this is a key point. Some of the coastal states have some minimal planning for hurricanes, nonetheless it always winds up assholes and elbows for a bit, even for these regionally constrained events.

The differential contains clutches that lock the two rear wheels together in the event one begins to spin. In normal driving, the clutches run free, and the drive wheels are free to turn at slightly different rates to aid in rounding a curve.

Are you committed to the pull-behind Trailer RV platform, or are you also considering various Class A or Class B motorhome options.
Frequently, those will pull smaller, light "TOAD" (towed) cars behind. Some of those can be towed with all four wheels on the ground, others need "tow-cradles" to lift the front drive wheels off of the road.
But that smaller TOAD car makes scooting around town while your big RV is in the campground, quite easy.
Conversely, parking the 36 ft. fifth-wheel and driving around town in your 1 ton diesel truck, well.. it's not hard to drive. But it can be kinda sporty when you're trying to find a place to park.
There is no universally RIGHT answer, only whatever is right for YOU.
But there are a few Morons & 'Ettes around here who've done a bunch of RVing. Ask around!
And you already know how reticent folks are to give advice here. LOL

The reason is an old one. A solid axle connecting 2 wheels works fine on straightaways, but something interesting happens when rounding turns. The inside wheel turns quite a bit slower than the outside wheel. Chattering and other oddities make it very unpleasant.
SO, some method was devised to decouple the wheels from each other when rounding turns and such.
The downside is obvious to anyone who has had one wheel stuck in snow or ice or mud. One wheel sitting on solid pavement sits there ... and doesn't do anything ... while the wheel in the snow just spins. So you could say, a 2 wheel drive vehicle is sometimes a 1 wheel drive vehicle.
Incidentally a similar effect can be observed in a 4 wheel drive vehicle.

Two non-soy men can easily pull those engines.
The biggest pain about the motor is not losing all of the seals and other fiddly bits when you are rebuilding it.

I've been doing a lot of "shopping", looking at various rural real estate resources.
Some very intriguing and interesting options are out there, and more will soon be on the market.
Much of what's been on the market, has been posting price reductions.
Oh, and more foreclosures than I've seen since the '80s collapse.
And it won't be getting better, I think, all that soon. The recovery is going to take way longer than the crash.

Well, I used a '79 12A motor from an RX7 doing the Triumph engine swap, and that sucker was heavy. I used a hoist. Mind you, I was doing a lot of fitment stuff, so it was in and out numerous times.

The thing is I'm non sure how much of that was due to the Spanish flu and how much of it was attributable to WWI.
It should be noted the author is a leftist and does not like nationalism, so he's not celebrating what he thinks is coming - the end of the EU and mass immigration. He thinks that the epidemic will simply speed up and intensify trends that were already occurring as shown by Brexit, Trump's election, Johnson's election, and the growing strength of other nationalist movements in Europe.
He thinks it sucks, but I hope he's correct (bearing in mind, of course, that nationalism in Europe can take pretty nasty forms.)

The third-generation RX-7 was a truly great car. Not perfect, by a long stretch, but great. It was built around a twin-turbo rotary engine. Hard to imagine a better expression for that engine.

That actually makes a bit of sense to me. When the story about the woman accusing Biden of sexually assaulting her broke, I thought it might have been engineered by the Dems so they would have an excuse to dump the old perv and run Cuomo instead - and that scared me. But the media is completely burying the story because they're too stupid to realize a country going through a massive trauma (first from the hysteria, then from the economic hardships this will cause) might not want to elect a guy who doesn't know what friggin' day it is half the time.

Hah! I have contemplated that. I even have a Geo tracker. But it still runs.
Someone was asking about the advantages of a rotary motor.
1. They are incredibly smooth. No reciprocating motion. There are some unbalanced forces, but they are well compensated for
2. Low center of mass, basically in line with the main engine shaft. Makes for a flatter-cornering car.
3. Short overall length, and compact in general. Will fit where other engines making the same power will not.
Disadvantages?
1. They love to rev high, but if you exceed the rev limit, the apex seals get destroyed, and it can happen very quickly.
2. They use a lot of fuel, and a portion of each fuel charge is still burning as the exhaust port opens, so the exhaust is both very noisy, and very hot.
3. They consume oil.
4. Can be a real bitch to get started in extreme cold weather. The early ones a had a reservoir for ethylene glycol, and a pump to squirt it into the intake to help the apex seals seal on an extreme cold start.

Putting Corvair engines in VW's was actually easy. Most models, you could "flop" the transaxle. Take the whole differential/axle assembly out of the case, and insert it from the other side. They eventually made the "tunnel case" transaxle with one side cover integral with the case, and I do not know if they can be flopped.

I've had such a light installed above the coils in my HVAC system, since 2009. Back then, those were about a $400 install.
You can buy the kit now at your commercial HVAC supply house, for right at about $100 even. Might take a pro 30 minutes to install and connect to the wiring.
Highly recommended.

Suburbans are great tow vehicles, and very comfortable for road trips. I love all of mine. The newest one, a 2008 is my least favorite for hauling, since the cargo area is smaller than the older ones. Also the lift gate is clumsy. I much, much prefer the barn doors on the older ones. The '96 I am driving now will carry a tall stack of drywall, and the doors will close on it. And I can get a few 12 foot pieces of lumber in there, too.
The '08 is great for road trips with passengers, though, and the six-liter engine has lots of jam.

Take an Oldsmobile 215 aluminum V8, and fit that to a Corvair, in the stock location. Mount a custom aluminum radiator up front, with electric fans. If the Corvair rear axle cannot be flipped to work with a CW-rotating engine, use a VW beetle transaxle; they are plenty tough, and can be made tougher.

Do try to avoid the models with the huge one piece lift gate. It is a PITA to use. You have to unlatch it, and then step back, as the arc it makes going passes right through your face. "Barn doors" are by far the handiest configuration, and no complicated mechanisms to go bad, either. Just oil the hinges now and then, and you are golden.

I don't think so. Stock Corvair: CCW engine rotation gives CCW rotation of rear wheels, as viewed from left side. Car goes forward.
Mid-engine V8 conversion: the entire transaxle assembly is removed, and turned front to back. What was the left rear wheel is now on the right, and vice versa. Clockwise engine rotation gives clockwise rotation of right rear wheel. Car goes forward.

HCQ cocktail will turn the R-naught from 3.0 to 0.3 ... we will be saved the horrible forecasts. Assuming they have enough to give it to everyone right after testing positive, and assuming the political left doesn't try to sacrifice lives just to keep from giving Trump any credit.

There will be a way to see that after it's all over and complete data can be analyzed. If you see a drop in the over 80 mortality rate for a period after this is over, then that will indicate that. If not, then they would all be "excess deaths".
I'm sure it will be somewhat in between and you can squeeze out some excess death factor.

Apparently the Chinese govt is in a full-court press to blame any second wave of outbreak on foreigners. They publish daily numbers of "imported" cases, conveniently leaving out they are returning Chinese nationals and will highlight the one or two white visitors who have the virus. They warn people to stay clear of hotels where these imported cases are being quarantined and encourage businesses and restaurants not to allow foreigners inside their shops. We've been over this time and again. ALL of these projections are skewed towards the populations that are already infected and showing severe symptoms.
Nobody is going door to door and surveying entire populations.
Our best REAL ACCURATE Data comes from the Cruise Ship that was quarrantined for 30+ days. (What fucking luck that was, really. For us. Not the passengers.)

H1N1 infected 61 million people in the US. But only about 12k died. I think it is reasonable to argue that 12k additional deaths in a year is *not* reason to hold up the economy.
On the other hand, assuming the same infection rate, (which may not be reasonable! early estimates suggest covid is *more* infective than h1n1!), we get 61 million infected = 152k deaths. over 10x worse than h1n1.
Personally, I think your estimate of 0.25% is on the low end. South Korea had the most extensive testing in the world and their death rate was over 1%. I don't think it's crazy to suggest 1-1.5% is possible.
Now. What is the cost of social quarantine vs. saving 150k+ mostly old people? I don't know. But my dad is literally reading this here webpage and deciding *not* to be careful because of what he reads here. That seems unwise.

but, since you asked, it's about minimizing the squared error between a line of best fit and a set of data points. my preference is to do it with matrices, i've always been a sucker for linear algebra. but frankly, todays computing packages do it so well (matlab, python) that you barely have to worry about method or theory, and the computer does it for you pretty well.

i think predicting an overall death total is very difficult, but i do think it's easy to say it will pass that of H1N1.
The predicitions I trust most are those on metaculus (essentially a betting market popular in the rationalist community...people who pride themselves on getting predictions within a certain bound of uncertainties).

the current median guess there is that almost 1.5 M americans will test positive by april 27. multiply by 1% and that is 15,000 deaths, by april.
That assumes current distancing measures. I think that any messaging that discourages the current distancing measures (or more) is deeply dangerous.

We are in uncharted territory here in terms of both disease and government response. Everyone is on edge due to not knowing quite how we should be handling this.
I don't think that anyone wants to see people dying horrible deaths, but at the same time there is concern for those who are having their entire livelihoods threatened, especially given that things were starting to pick back up economically.
It's the uncertainty of it all that has everyone stirred up.

I take that to mean total percentage of population at risk of hospitalization from Covid-19 in particular, not in general.
What he shows is that, depending on that number, we can be at very different points on the curve. If the number is very low, then we are well along the curve before we start seeing large numbers. If the number is high, then were are near the beginning and things are going to get much worse.
The way to answer this is accurate random testing of the general population, with antibody tests to determine what fraction of the population has truly been exposed.
That will tell us where we are. And that capability is getting ramped up.
