10 Willowed from last thread, detailed information about hospital treatments for COV-19

Want to know nuts and bolts about hospital treatment of COV-19, this resource is useful. It is part of the Internet Book of Critical Care (IBCC)

Doc responsible for this page is Dr. Josh Farkas, Assoc. Professor of Pulmonology and Critical Care, Univ. of VT, Med. School. It has other pages but a new one specifically covering treatment of COV-19 updated as of March 22nd is below. Has nary a political bent and no predictions on deaths etc. Just how you might be treated by a doctor, including diagnosis, prognosis, care, treatment, etc. Guy has an audio podcast on it as well. CT, xray, etc images also included along with cites (most hyperlinked) to the original studies on COV-19 etc.

I'm biased, but I've always thought you should always have a dog. Probably because the only time in my life I didn't was a 6 month period in apartments before we bought our home. And our housewarming gift to each other was dogs. =)

We had a 120lb Malamute that would circle nose to tail around our kids when they were on the bed and taught them to howl properly. She also trained our oldest to fetch things from the bar for her. And with a hauling harness and a sled, I never had to haul them up the hill in the snow!

Nothing I've seen is proof positive that I don't have the beer bug, but I think it's almost certainly just a cold.

Makes me wonder whether the common cold has similar transmissibility to beer bug.

71 This will probably net a lot of angry responses. So be it. But this needs to go out as some food for thought:

Yes, I know, there is a lot of anger that the United States isn't manufacturing exactly 100% of the world's goods, and that manufacturing should be the 80% of the economy that isn't government. (And in all seriousness, I agree that certain industries should be closer to home - whether or not Red China let loose the WUHAN virus purposefully, their woeful response is an indicator that in regards to the medical world, we cannot reliably do business with them.) And I suppose there is something that can be done on the federal level to make the country more competitive for business.

HOWEVER - I think a lot of people are forgetting the local level. Think about it. How many businesses have been run out of town by inept, incompetent, or hostile local governments? How many businesses would be HAPPY to make things here, but are hamstrung by local regulations, local officials wanting what amount to bribes, potential employees that would be great if they weren't poorly educated by local schools, etc. What about states that, for instance, do not have Right To Work laws (though that number is thankfully declining little by little)?

And as we are seeing now, the United States does not have a unitary government. Much of what you see being done to the country at present comes from local officials who are more than happy to run the economy into the ground.

Just some thoughts I have as I recline here in my study. Flame away.

72 Vmom, it depends on which Latin you are learning.

Classical Latin attempts to teach the language like we think the Romans spoke it. Ecclesiastical Latin uses the English pronunciations. So classical says it's a w, but the Church uses the v pronunciation.

Hope that helps!

129 WI is shutting down. The order comes down tomorrow. We don't know much. However, employees deemed essential are being given special documentation by their employers. I've seen examples from 2 different local employers. The language is different enough that I'm not sure the State gave them text to print out on their letterhead. The clear thrust is the same: the documents are to be shown to someone upon request to prove the bearer is deemed essential and can be on the roads. One set of docs even called itself a "driving pass".

The gist of the shutdown, as it appears to be coming tomorrow, does not require these documents. They are saying people can go to pharmacies, grocery stores etc. there aren't enough cops to rigorously check that many people in motion. My guess is that the employer documents are designed in case things get taken to the next level. Martial law or some equivalent. Perhaps the national Guard called up and manning roadblocks and checkpoints? I'm not sure what form that would take.

Here in Wisconsin, in the USA, we are on the edge of needing special "driving passes" to leave our homes. Keep in mind, we have about 400 Wuhan Lung AIDS cases in the whole state. Last I heard, we have had 3 deaths.

135 24 so In Latin is "V" a consonant or a vowel
and how is it pronounced?

duolingo says it's sort of "w" sounding
Posted by: vmom 2020 at March 23, 2020 08:27 PM (G546f)

it's both, depending on context. But most texts I've seen printed/online have the courtesy of rendering the vowel uses as u's and consonant (w) uses as v's. However, there are some documents I saw translated which were written in lower case and all v/u were u(!) I think some inscriptions in capital case use all V's.

So 'vulnus' (wound) is 'wool-nuss', and 'vendi, vidi, vici' is pronounced "wendy, weedy, weeky" (approximately.)

Later latin renders them as a v sound, and in particular the English form of Latin uses 'v' sounds except where they are vowel uses, in which case it's a u sound (uh for short, oo for long.)

137 What's the best age your child should be before buying a dog?

According to pediatricians, children younger than 3 to 4 years should not be allowed to play with pets unsupervised because they are not mature enough to control their anger or aggression and could hurt the pet. Children younger than 10 years are not able to completely care for a pet on their own. Most important: parents should model appropriate care for pets because children in any age group learn about pet care by watching their parents' behavior.

Considering that when he ordered the travel ban from China, everyone called it "racist", it was going to take something this big to wake people up to China being our enemy.

Pro tip: If you're worried about future events, buy a 28 gauge, or a .410...or resign yourself to .22 short, because except for 12 ga. 7 1/2's and 8's, that's all that was left.

Funny thing about that, if home defense ones concern, 7 1/2's would do just fine, maybe better than all of that 00 that people feel compelled to buy.

Happened with the impeachment trial too. Collins was considered one of the possible Republicans that may have been convinced to vote to convict on at least one of the two articles. The House managers let loose on insults to the Senate, including senators by name, and on Roberts, and any chance they had with her was gone.

Then I fired my Mosin-Nagant from the hip - yep, nice big clean hole. They noted the material was not rated for rifle (forget the "level" or nomenclature), they just did it for giggles.

Right on. Pretty well stocked, actually, though no paper products. Didn't matter to me, as I'm still well stocked. There was plenty of produce, which was a main goal.

Went to the bank, the beer and tobacco store, and Popeyes, where to my surprise even the dining room was still open. Still, I did drive thru.

Everyone was minding their distance, but I saw just one person wearing a mask. I used my 70% isopropyl alcohol rag liberally on the cart (and my hands after each visit).

It felt *almost* normal out there, though traffic was fairly light. And the county commissioners voted down a curfew yesterday, being pushed by the cop groups. That was kinda nice too.

My company has an amazing communications system and a VPN that has only dumped on me once. So my productivity is close to what it is at the office. Plus I have plenty of work, at least for this week. And since job sites are still active, and engineering and design are still going strong, we should be good to go for some time, as long as our lefty governor (Polis) doesn't do what lefty governors seem wont to do. So far he has been pretty reasonable, which shocked the hell out of me. (fingers crossed)

I find I do worse in the morning, when negative thoughts prevail. But then I venture outdoors for a bit and all seems well.

The Anti-Federalists argued against it. They argued specifically against the 10th - the notion that anything would be restricted to the Federal. The Anti-Federalists stated that the rest of the amendments would be used, like the camels nose, to justify the perversion of the entire notion of limited government.

They were right.

Stress leads to heart attacks, stroke, even cancers. Pretty much any medical condition... even making one more susceptible to infections.

So we're going to see a steep rise in deaths related to these conditions, and they won't be statistics our rulers will look at. They'll only ask how many people died from THIS virus.

Which is not going to be that many, in the end. But we're costing ourselves much much more than money by acting like it's the worst thing we face.

That does not negate the argument. That's a slippery slope fallacy: this bad thing can come from that action. That does not mean the argument for it is wrong, only that something bad may come from it.

The bottom line is that the way you describe it, the anti-federalists set forth an argument against the mere existence of a federal government of any form, which is ridiculous.

And remember: attack the argument, not the person. The argument is what I called idiotic.

I think they will re-evaluate this in a week or so. And it's likely that things will start to loosen up. I don't think it's an unreasonable amount of time to keep medical services from being overwhelmed.

349 The anti-federalists were entirely wrong about the
bill of rights. Imagine not having the first or second amendments
written down. Hell, the government is constantly trying to trample both
despite them being written down.
Posted by: bear with asymmetrical balls at March 23, 2020 09:15 PM (H5knJ)

Imagine the Federal not having the first or second amendments as an excuse to trample the collective will of the states.

Oh - shit. You don't have to imagine. How often has the Federal stormed in to make sure the citizens of XYZ state get their fair taste of the 2A ? Never.

Incorporation only extends to the parts of the Bill of Rights that the Federal Courts approve of. Before the contrived notion of Incorporation - the Bill of Rights only applied to the Federal branch. And the States did as they will.

And here we are. No Federal agents making sure you can buy a gun. No Feds marching in to stop asset seizure without a trial. Some parts of the Bill or Rights are more equal than others.

As the Anti-Federalists warned.

375 A Serious Question for this serious and smart military and global economics blog.

Is there some sort of Rule between G7 nations that requires each country to act in such a manner that their currency doesn't rise or fall too dramatically against the other member nations?

Lets say that Europe and other G7 nations decide to tank their economy chasing the Chinese Sanity Destroying Flu by doing stupid Leftist things.

The US chooses not to (too late now, I know) so the US Dollar would become significantly stronger than the other nation's currency causing all kinds of trade problems which ends up causing labor, service and product arbitrage that ends up being economically disastrous until parity is restored.

So the US decides to pitch in and commit economic suicide by inflating its currency by tripling its usual budget deficit - thus making an all for one one for all jump off the cliff.

In short, is this reckless spending orgy taking place because our government needs to inflate our currency at the same rate as other G7 nations so as to not upset global trade?

I know that government never needs a reason to plunder the treasury, but in a sense are they being told you must plunder the treasury? Its a moral duty to do so?

Yeah its a battle of the scumbags trying to lard up a bill to protect Americans and help in a crisis. I don't like the bill but mother of all that is holy its evil to try to use something like this in such a hideous political way. Neither party is free of blame.

If the Q is about the song that goes turn on your love light, it's "Turn On Your Love Light," by Bobby "Blue" Bland.
And here it is. https://tinyurl.com/tylzjkz
Without a warning, you broke my heart.
You took it, Baby, and you tore it apart.
You left me sitting in the dark cryin'.
You said your love for me was dyin'.
Come on, baby. Baby, please. Come on, baby. Baby, please.
Turn on your light. Let it shine on me.
Turn on your love light. Let it shine on me.
And let it shine, shine, shine. Let it shine.

Since this is my fantasy, I want him to shout "F*ck you McCain" afterwards.

Posted by: Splunge at March 23, 2020 09:51 PM (dOV9E)

517 Generally, I'm not a fan of the idea of just giving money to everyone, but I do think it's actually necessary right now. So many people got put out of work overnight by edicts from their state governors.

We're talking mostly young people who don't make a whole lot of money, and don't have a whole lot in savings. All of a sudden, they're forced out of their jobs, and can't find new ones because all these other businesses they could work for are shut down, too.

Even if they can find work in new, government-approved fields, that takes time. Applying for unemployment also takes time (especially right now, with so many new applicants).

A one-time payment from Uncle Sam would help them pay the rent and buy food while they look for new jobs or wait for unemployment checks to start coming in.

Democrats are offering the same "soak the rich" policies they always do. "We're just gonna make it illegal to evict you for not paying rent," for example. Well, that sounds fine and dandy to covetous people, but your landlord has bills to pay, too. He needs to buy food, too.

In this extreme circumstance of so many people being forced out of a job overnight by government edict, yes, I think the government is obligated to give them a little bit of money to help them move on to something else.

And now it's the Democrats, ostensibly the party of "the little guy", who oppose this, because they want more money for free baby-killing-on-demand and various "environmentally responsible" boondoggles more than they want to help these people.

I hope these folks are paying attention, and realize that Nancy Pelosi took that relief money from them. Chuck Schumer took that relief money from them. And, their various Democrat governors put them in the position of needing that relief money in the first place.

I
think a lot of this is situational and regional, Hell, it is often that
what really matters is being at the right store at the right time on
the right day.

When this started Wegmans
had everything while the others had none of the items people are
hoarding. So once people hear Wegman's has it all and what is going to
happen? Everyone goes there and they get pounded. For sure some stores
are better than others, but dealing with pandemic, hysteria, and
hording is not easy.

Went to Wally World
today and they were basically out of all fresh meat. They didn't have
steaks or any chicken. When I went to Wegmans a few days ago, they had
20 roll packages of tp, even larger packs of paper towels, and these
huge containers of chicken breasts.

Isn't that why people in general fear a President declaring martial law no matter how anodyne the reason sounds?

Because he can get things done he wouldn't have been able to otherwise

But honestly, truckers are greater heroes than soldiers, because, while soldiers are doing dangerous and brave things, they aren't doing it for We The People, they are doing it for the vanity of our nation building bureaucrats, ambassadors and politicians.

Truckers are directly benefiting We The People.

Um, really? So the National Cemeteries full of the fallen from wars like WWII, which featured the United States fighting an existential threat, doesn't mean shit to you? The veterans of this country do not mean shit to you?

The truckers cannot do their jobs without being given the freedom to operate courtesy of the United States military.

(In fact, this whole thanking of select industries to me is rather silly. Everyone has their role to play. Truckers are important, but they aren't doing jack with the civil engineers who built the roads, the firms that built the trucks and trailers, and the people who fill the trailers with the goods, the energy companies that make the transport possible, and on and on and on.)

595 A shark once washed up on the shores of the Potomac after a major storm. I am not sure what effect the storm had but something went haywire. The Potomac is brackish as well, moreso of course on the Chesapeake side. Am I saying you could run into a shark in a fresh water river? Yes I am. Am I right? probably not.

596 Zod at 9:54... Like I said, Zod, I'm usually opposed to handouts. But a one-time handout, in the extreme circumstances we're facing right now, yeah, I'm on board with that.

I recognize that there are problems with it, but there are also problems with letting a single politician unilaterally declare, "Yeah, don't think we want you doing your totally-legal job at this moment, so I'm taking that job away from you right now."

603 I'm not overly worried about toilet paper right now. I have four rolls of Quilted Northern Ultra-Plush (hello, ladies!), and that should last me for a while since I live alone.

He was sort of a blues child prodigy back in the early '90's. My thoughts were, "meh, over-hyped". But he seems to have stuck to it. More power to him.

606 Humphreyrobot at 10:48... Don't do this. Silk does not flush well.

Toilet paper is the only thing that flushes well after you wipe with it. Paper towels don't flush. Napkins don't flush. Cloth doesn't flush. Baby wipes claim to be flushable on the package, but that's a lie; they don't flush well.

If you're wiping with anything besides toilet paper, don't try to flush it. Put it in your bathroom wastebasket and take it out on trash pick-up day.
