Senate Democrats Are Crashing the US Economy For... Favors for Unions and Environmentalist Boondoggles

As an unwise man once said: Never let a crisis go to waste.

On the Senate floor shortly after noon on Monday, Majority Leader Mitch McConnell lit into Democrats, specifically alleging they were trying to extract concessions from airlines over their "carbon footprint," with the economy hanging in the balance.

"They ought to be embarrassed," he said. "This is no time for this nonsense."

...

Democrats overnight blocked the massive economic rescue package, teeing up new negotiations Monday morning. But issues having nothing to do with coronavirus have become impediments to the relief package, according to a senior Republican aide.

"As Leader Schumer continues to hold up the desperately-needed relief package, the last-minute list of demands from Pelosi’s and Schumer's ideological wish list are coming into focus," the aide said.

Update: Senate Democrats demanding "Corporate Board Diversity" as price for saving US economy from complete collapse.

Tuition loan forgiveness has been one of the top promises by all of the Democrat POTUS candidates.

They are simply demanding this because they want it (no pandemic-specific need) and so that they can then use it to get more votes in November. It must poll well, or probably more likely it's seen as a way to get Millennials motivated to vote and vote Democrat, specifically.

Use my plan and your mortgage will be forgiven...

Along with:

The national debt.
All student loans.
All credit card debt
All consumer loans.

On top of that, a 4 trillion dollar infrastructure program would rebuild (correctly) every road, bridge sewage and water pipe.

Along with building 500 identical 300 mw modular reactors for nearly-free power.

And, if that's not enough, we do it without borrowing a dime. All the money comes from the (eventual) sale of assets held by the federal government over a 100 year period.

Why dick around with a 4 trillion dollar deal when a 47 trillion dollar deal will do it so much better?

170 I used to do the paperwork to pay student loans for people in the Navy. If you joined up in a critical skill job you could negotiate up to 4 years of student loan payments. It could be a huge amount of money the Navy paid out for you.

172 116 the whole student loan thing...i wasn't aware that if you want to pay your loan early, you have to negotiate with the bank because the bank wants guaranteed interest on that loan.....so basically there is a prepayment penalty....like there used to be on mortgages and car payments. that's messed up....you should be able to pay it all off one lump sum no prepayment penalty.....i don't think there should be loan forgiveness, i do think prepayment penalties should be removed.

206 The weakness and irresponsibility of the *GOP* on full display, possibly, over the next 48 hours.

Another commenter correctly noted, in that case referring to Graham, that the Dems' behavior is explicable only if one includes the weakness and cowardice (and de facto collusion) of the GOP, thus far, in so much of the Dems' vandalism.

True, the Dems rely on their "base" of unbelievably (and variously) uninformed, dumb, selfish, racist, tribal voters, and their PR arm, "the press", to get away with much of their nonsense.

But this is different. The politix of this are unsustainable for the Dems, in fact they're catastrophically hazardous - IF there is another faction, power, voice in the country, attacking them for it.

The Senate GOP has been as limp as a wet noodle so far (occasional, minimal flare-ups like a week or two for Kavanaugh). The House GOP has long been comical in their transparent dishonesty (McCarthy going to the border to showboat his sudden and mysterious concern about border security in *October 2018* may never be surpassed for hilarity, and well-founded contempt for most GOP voters).

Well, here we are. Trump has succeeded mostly without the help of the GOP to date. But now the non-WH GOP has to get serious if anything is to be done, substantively or politically.

Think of the country like a rich family that has fallen on hard times.

Sure, it would be nice if the family could pay all the bills in these hard times from cash flow, but that's just not happening. The family could go to the bank, but you don't want to get over extended.

What the family needs to do is to sell Great Grandma's jewels. Some of the paintings could go too. How about the lower 40 acres? That car collection is just gathering dust.

Sell it off and everyone in the family can start fresh, all with new houses and equipment, then go forward to make a great life without all the worry.

Also considering that Covid-19 doesn't kill like smallpox and the 1918 flu did.

Covid 19 exacerbates pre-existing conditions in most cases, and then, because people are weakened, it kills them.

Smallpox & 1918 killed all on their own.

250 Strange but perhaps related...

One thing I suddenly realized during this virus crisis...
I had no longer been getting telemarketer or robocalls
for this past week, after getting 2 to 4 calls every day
including weekends. (Has anyone else noticed that?)

Until today, when they started again, got 2 so far
today. Interestingly, I went to search on the Net for
one of the numbers that called but didn't leave a
message: the Caller ID for 1-866-777-1990 read
"SPAM? 800 Service". Let the call go to the answering
machine, no message was left.

When I looked up the #, a site called 800notes.com
(apparently a site where people look up and report on
telemarketer phone numbers they get, trying to find
out who's calling) had some comments saying that an
unnamed political org was phoning out recorded
political messages blaming the current administration
for the virus crisis!

I have no personal / business ties to that site, so can't
necessarily say if the comments on that number are
all true. But would it be surprising if it was another
sign of an "op"?

Just printing money is what they're talking about doing right now.

My plan doesn't borrow a nickel. What it does do is return us to what the Constitution envisioned. The federal government is only suppose to "own" what is needed for the operation of the government.

I take all the assets we have in excess and place them into a quasi-governmental agency tasked with obtaining fair market value for them over a 100 year period. The agency has the ability in it's charter to advance up to 50% of the value immediately to the government.

Very simple.

325 Trump's administration asked people for some breathing space (stay home) for a couple of weeks so they can figure out what this thing is and find a vaccine. To support this 2 week National vacation they are moving a 2t bill through Congress. "What's in it ?" you ask. "An estimated $350 billion would be provided for small businesses to keep making payroll. Companies with 500 or fewer employees could tap up to $10 million each in forgivable small business loans to keep paychecks flowing. The program would provide 8 weeks of assistance through federally guaranteed loans qualifying employers who maintain payroll; if they do, other costs like mortgage interest, rent, and utilities would be forgiven." OK.

335 Part of the problem is that no one is reusing the masks even though they can be easily sterilized.

The 'disposable' mentality of normal conditions is too strong.

These are disposable because normally, they cost less to buy than it would cost to sterilize them and the risk isn't considered to be worth the effort. But that math needs to change when they are not available.

Most these masks are only worn for a few minutes to maybe a couple hours. The virus is said to only survive for a number of hours in ideal conditions.
So if the masks were run through a dryer with disinfectant, bathed in UV, and set aside for 1 day, they would be perfectly serviceable.

In Fairfax County, they are starting up distance learning. They just did a poll to see who had internet access and/or laptops at home. People who "need" them will be able to pick up MiFis and loaner laptops later this week.

Then theoretically, next week the online schools begin.

That's the story, but whether it's going to be effective is really subject to a lot of healthy doubt. FCPS has never done anything like this before, and it's clear they don't have the infrastructure.

Here in Ohio the schools have shifted to online learning. Schools were already required to maintain 3 days worth of online curriculum, updated as the year progressed, in case of a district school closure. Teachers and staff are, in some areas at least IINM, still reporting in to work to update online coursework.

You know, since we have this precedent now that we have to shut down the country for viruses as deadly as the seasonal flu.

Well, since we know there are on average at least 20,000 American deaths due to flu each year, seems like that is justification now for going through this every flu season.

Since teachers will not accept this online learning to go on forever, well, we have to move the school year to the time of year when viruses do live: warmer months.

The latest on the Diamond Princess shows a case fatality rate of 0.5%, with 17% total infected (and looking at the age distribution, it's 7% for the elderly). That's still 5x greater fatality rate than the flu. Extrapolating that to the US Population would be about 280,000 dead.

And that is a small sample compared to the general population the world over. You need far more data to figure out just what this thing is really like.

That's not theoretical. Waaaaay back in the day, I did alpha testing on voice recognition software as I knew someone designing it and, as he noted, if it could keep up with the speed with which I speak, to say nothing of the oddities of my cadence and pronunciation, the software was good.

It couldn't.

Within the last six months I've tried out some of the higher end programs and, yeah, I can type faster than it can transcribe accurately.

557 The constitutional powers trump has are to use the 101st airborne to round up Democrat party leaders and send them to Guantanamo. I only whether or not he has enough support in the military yet to launch a self coup, or autogolpe as the south Americans call it.

558 We should NEVER pass omnibus bills, especially in a crisis. If we have a sector that needs help, draft a bill for that sector and pass it. If you have to pass 100 bills, then so be it.

559 Diamond Princess 761 sick 9 deaths
The danger is the hospitals get swamped and patients don't get ventilators.

Pray we get the drug cocktail...it takes 4 days to work and two more to clear the virus.

Until the drug shows up we need to blunt the virus spread.

Harbor freight is kicking in N95 masks, face shields, and nitrile gloves free? to government.

Morons. This death toll will not get worse % wise if patients get ventilators.

ALSO... another problem is some who survive the ventilators suffer permanent lung damage.

Let's not belittle the Stay Put orders. Blunt the disease spread. Retard the numbers.

And I am very suspicious of the ChiComs role in this mess.

560 #558 we need a Constitutional Amendment for the line item veto.

Posted by: torabora at March 23, 2020 03:36 PM (r757R)

561 But that won't happen because both sides have their hobby horses in this thing, the dems are just pushing it too far. Washington's fucked and so are we.

Riders are the casing into which the sausage is packed. The idea of a simple, riderless bill probably never crosses their minds.

Show me which Republican "hobby horses" that are not directly related to the coronavirus and key industries are packed in this bill, Troll McFucktard. McConnell stripped out all the superfluous garbage and Democrats loaded it up with bullshit.
Posted by: Marcus T at March 23, 2020 03:26 PM (VpIIl)

First to answer Joe Mannix.
I didn't read the bill, but a lifetime of observation hath shown this to be the case. Marcus T assures me I'm wrong, but that would make this bill a unicorn in DC history. Perhaps.

Marcus T. You're calling me out, not just on facts but with "Troll McFucktard"?
Keyboard warrior, sad little man.

Be careful what you wish for. The JEF would have loved to have this power.

564 116 the whole student loan thing...i wasn't aware that if you want to pay your loan early, you have to negotiate with the bank because the bank wants guaranteed interest on that loan.....so basically there is a prepayment penalty....like there used to be on mortgages and car payments. that's messed up....you should be able to pay it all off one lump sum no prepayment penalty.....i don't think there should be loan forgiveness, i do think prepayment penalties should be removed.

That must depend on the loan and when it's taken, I paid mine off early and there was no penalty. Government owns the school loan program now so there are really no banks counting on the interest.

568 "Never let a crisis go to waste." Is that the same thing as "Never let someone else's death go to waste?" And Schumer is an honorable man.
