40 Good morning, all. Been a virtual teacher for a week now. Governor has said no school until at least May 1st. I know we won't be going back this year. Still, my students have been turning in work online and actually arguing about grades. God bless them. I even miss the annoying ones.

41 Dollar Tree yesterday: When I got there about 11:30, the TP shelves were almost empty, with a note asking patrons not to grab any more than 4 packets of 4 rolls each. I've got a pretty good stock, so I grabbed one.

No bread to speak of there. And at the local grocery chain, I knew when I saw no carts outside that it was gonna be bad, so I went home.

It's not too weird so far. What will seem weird is Monday a.m., when after exercising and shaving, I won't have to drive to work.

65 Radio talk show host brought up a good point about distance learning, public schools and disruptive students.

Schools are being inundated with punks/punkettes who through behavior and intimidation, prevent other students from learning. They are unfortunately impossible to remove from classrooms or discipline.

With distance learning, their negative presence would seem to be reduced.

Maybe a hidden good thing in all this shit.

82 Morning, 'rons and 'ronettes.

Pleasantly surprised that, despite my well-warranted cynicism, MA guv Baker is resisting calls for a lockdown of the state. So I am going to enjoy my Saturday as much as I can.

Can't drink of course - well, I could, but I don't like to drink at home - or have breakfast at the local diner, but I can grab a cup of covfefe and have a cigar or two at my local cigar shop.

Then home to clean the staircase leading up to the attic / writing room here at Stately Poppins Manor (it's cluttered with books and other things I'm too lazy to bring all the way up).

And then I should write, but I'll probably catch up on movies. Watched Spider Baby and Madam Satan yesterday. I've got 1984 queued up, but I think today will be Cleopatra.

I went to one here in AZ yesterday, around 7 a.m. It was packed with people, but everyone was behaving themselves. Lots of bare shelves, but stock clerks were working, and I even managed to snag a 12-pack of TP (limit one per customer). Little meat, no eggs, some bread (limit 2 per person). Long lines at the check-out (all in this store are the self-check-out type). They only had a few of them operational for some reason, and they had clerks checking everyone's basket to make sure they were not buying over the limit. One guy in line had to give up some loaves of bread, as he was trying to buy more than the limit of 2.

100 Just heard that the communist governor of NJ is going to follow NY, CA, TX, IL, CT and shut down the state to only essential businesses and personnel.

So we have now shut down around 1/3 of the nations GDP output.

I'm convinced now more than ever that this is an operation to break the US.

This is madness.

116 For you, Thomas: I posted this yesterday, but it's worth putting up again.

Just received this from a good friend/relative in email. He puts the situation far better than I could, in fact better than I have seen anyone do so far:

"Unknown. I keep having to remind myself that this situation is utter unprecedented, on *several* levels, and that means the outcome cannot be discerned by merely gazing into the past and looking for examples. This shit is new.

We've never had an economic shutdown before. Ever. We've had slowdowns, we've had recessions, we've had depressions, but at zero points in the history of the modern economy has the whole thing TURNED OFF. In my lingo, we're not closing some applications and being done with it, we are turning off power entirely, unplugging the whole damn computer, plugging it back on, and PRAYING that it still boots up. Most of the time when we do that with computers, it works. But not always.

You might say this isn't a shutdown, but it really really is. It's like someone yanked the powercord out. All the non-grocery public-facing everythings are closed, and they're not closed for a day or two. And it's not just here, it's everywhere. Factories may continue to run, but they're going to be producing respirators and masks and chemicals, not cars and TVs, and they'll do so in a way
that requires fewer humans. We're already seeing rent freezes. Unemployment is already looking STAGGERING. Money is going to stop moving along 50-60% of the pathways almost immediately, and that'll ripple through the rest in weeks.

But what keeps running through my head is how the economy is and is not like a computer. The economy runs almost entirely on math, computers don't need the 'almost'. The economy is process-oriented, like a computer - It 'does' fairly discrete things. But, and this is where it gets odd, computers don't start little and grow up big. They don't grow new parts. They don't expand and
contract in the same way economies do, speeding up and slowing down at semi-random intervals. They don't shift, and change, and mutate. But economies do all of those things.

Economies, I propose, are less like computers, and more like biology. They work like animals.

'Turning off' is the wrong metaphor, therefore. The economy is about to die. We're hoping we can bring it back to life. That's a much harder task than turning a computer back on, and just like biology, the dead economy will start to rot. Businesses will shutter permanently. Actual literal things, sitting unused in offices for weeks or months, will literally decay.

It might work fine. We put it on life-support, try to keep it there, and hope everything still works when we start the blood pumping again, but oh man oh man. "

This is purposeful destruction this has nothing to do with "virus" any longer.

This op was planned and waiting for the right time and circumstances.

There is no way anyone in a position of authority doesn't understand what shutting down the world's economy will do to the world.

The only thing that makes any sense is that with the amount of debt outstanding everywhere around the world, there was no longer a mechanism or pathway to keep the plates spinning.

So the needed a way to reset everything.

But you would need some global crisis in order to make the bitter pill go down.

Voila, we have a viral pandemic, let's shut the world down because a handful of people around the globe have died from what is essentially the flu.

This is an operation to effectuate that reset.
It's monstrous and evil but there it is.

This is the real part that is so scary - a lot of small businesses, perhaps millions of them, will never reopen no matter how this plays out. Eventually new businesses will arise to replace them; but just for the example of one industry, up to 75% of the restaurants in the country could be bankrupt within a month. You can't just turn off revenue streams for a small business and think you can just turn it on again like a light switch.

plus, all movie theaters and any associated businesses will be gone. There's no way they survive this, even after the crisis is over.

Back to the haircut thing, some processes keep marching on, it will be a madhouse at the barber's provided this insanity concludes. 229 RIP Kenny Rogers. I never met the man, but oddly enough, my mother, brother, sister, and most of my friends (this being back in the 1970-71 time frame) did.

After his group "Kenny Rogers and the First Edition" broke up, Rogers ended up here in Houston, and had a job selling office coffee vending machines. This is how my mom met him, as she had an office at the time in the Esperson Building in downtown Houston. She even bought one from him. My brother and sister met him one day when he made a courtesy call on my mom and they happened to be there. By all accounts everyone was impressed by how pleasant and courteous he was. Everyone knew who he was, of course, but he didn't act like your typical "famous performer".

As for my friends, in those days, before any of us had cars, if we wanted to go anywhere, we hitchhiked, And yes, it was reasonably safe to do so in those days. And it seems practically all my friends back then got picked up by Rogers when out hitchhiking at one time or another. A couple of the girls were especially impressed (again, they all said he was really a nice guy) as while on their ride, Kenny sang a song for them.

This went on for a year or so then Rogers' music career started to take off again and he left his sales gig behind him. The rest, as they say, is history.

Thanks for all the joy you gave us, Kenny. RIP.

258 I see a report that US coronavirus cases are doubling at a much higher rate than some other countries.

And now I need a graph

And the other showing the number of cases discovered daily.

Are we really getting sicker faster?

Or simply ramping up testing faster than other countries?

And thereby discovering more cases that were actually already out there in the population.

318 @238
Much like he go bad advice to just let Rosenstein/Huber/Barr/Durham to do their things that they will sort it out, he's gotten spectacularly bad advice with the viral pandemic operation.

We are shutting down the global economy over a virus that has an 80 plus pct recovery rate with standard treatment or OTC treatments, like how you would treat the flu or common cold.

Some populations are at more risk, but that would be the same for an 80 year old person who got a more common strain of the flu.

Flu kills between 13-22k people a year in the US.

This is was an operation from jump street to get Trump.

He's aiding this operation by not taking more direct control of the states through posse commitatas and other acts to quell rebellion.

They are destroying the world economy and as a result, us.

NJ where I live is going to shut down non-essential business.

Every state where my company has a presence has now shut down.

I had to let go of 55 engineers that were working on various projects that are now shut.

What people need to understand is that millions of people are going to be fired or let go within two weeks if this madness is not stopped.

They have to be fired, the math demands it.

Using my profession as a example, all people working on a project are billed to the project and then the client, If there are no projects to work on, there can be no billable hours, ergo, I cannot bill a customer, therefore I will have no money flowing in to pay the contractor.

There is no rainy day slush fund to pay idle contractors.

Money comes in, money goes out.

No money coming in, no money goes out and the contractor gets laid off.

I will be laid off in a month's time if this doesn't end soon.

I will not be alone because there will probably be 25 million people laid off within the next 4 weeks if this bullshit operation is not stopped.

344 So apparently the journ-o-list phrase of the day is "false hope." As in, "the president is encouraging false hope."

So they know the future?

Trump either pretends to know the future or is acting to calm people's fears. The journ-o-list types, based on their abysmal historical record to date, surely don't know nor can even reasonably predict the future and are geared towards inducing further panic.

These are the same clowns that predicted Hitlary's win, and are the ones still beating the drum on the Climate Change Hoax which has been failure theater now for decades.

And they call Trump the "irresponsible" one.

People always get behind a leader in a crisis, as long as he can demonstrate that he has a plan and he's in control, often and publicly. People didn't hate Jimmy Carter because times were bad when he was President; people hated him because every time he showed up on TV he proved that he was a clueless fuckwit who had no idea what was happening and no clue for what to do about it. (I remember during the Iran crisis, when oil prices were soaring again, he gave a broadcast where he told every America that all we could do was to wear more sweaters and sit closer to the fire)

348 the US numbers have been going "exponential" for the last 7 days, except yesterday there were fewer deaths than the day before. The daily death numbers starting March 13:

8, 8, 11, 18, 23, 41, 57, 49
So I declare the curve is turning, and treatments and isolation are working ... two weeks and we are out of the woods with treatment regiments/protocols making the outcome of infection milder for everyone ... the worse cases becoming moderate or mild.

That is my hope at least ... will take at least a week of data to get a real indication.

But any antifa or other infiltrator tweeting about getting infected and then TRYING to spread their inoculum to Trump crowds or other groups, should be tracked down and torture/killed on live TV. At this point what is quite clear is the CCP made the choice to spread their infected citizens around the world, instead of suffering the economic impact of their own actions alone.

Their further threat to leave us without supplies, after cornering the market, should not be forgotten when this is over. They should face trillions in whatever version of international "tort" we and the West can impose on them. We can perhaps form better alliances with Taiwan, India ... whomever acted responsibly. And the head of the dragon should be cut off in every region.

I understand your frustration, but you need to keep some perspective.

Unemployed people can find new work. When the crisis passes, the markets and economy can recover.

You don't recover from death.

I see people keep bringing up the allegedly low death rates of the China Virus.

The thing is, these are *additional* deaths, on top of everything else. This means they are adding pressure to the health system. Last week it was noted that on a normal day, Michigan uses 75 percent of its hospital beds. The ability to "surge" new beds is very limited. That capacity is reducing rapidly because while most people who get the disease don't die, a lot still need intensive treatment. That's why people are trying to stop its spread.

Not everyone who "recovers" is unharmed. That's getting lost in this conversation. People who get over the 'flu generally have zero lasting damage. This thing is different, and we're not sure what percentage of people will have permanent disabilities because of it. Apparently the lungs can get torn up pretty badly. Unlike China, we can't go part out some Uigurs to make more lung donors.

We aren't sure how often this happens because the Chinese lie. So we must overestimate the risk because underestimating it will not only cause additional deaths, but potentially people with lifelong disabilities.

In any event, the next couple of weeks will be crucial in seeing just how prevalent this is and whether the quarantines will work. If the cases stabilize (which they seem to have in Washington State), then we can isolate the 'hot spots' and being lifting restrictions.

If they don't, we could try lock downs, but odds are its too late.

So either way, this situation is temporary.

My fear is that we were a week too late to stop it in Michigan.

Such utter bullshit. Several different doctors tried the combination of the malaria drug (chloroquine) and other drugs on their WuFlu patients, and had great results. Those doctors' reports were published widely, and lots of people had read them even before Trump mentioned them. It was, and is, good news that we have some kind of treatment that can work for some patients. Doesn't mean it's a magic bullet, or that it will cure everybody, but it's good news and Trump rightly recognized it as such.

Giving people hope is important, especially when we have a corrupt and hopelessly stupid media hell-bent on creating as much panic and chaos as possible.

411 There's no sense giving 'stimulus' money to people who haven't seen an interruption in their paychecks.

Posted by: Mr. Peebles at March 21, 2020 09:02 AM (oVJmc)

412 Staring to hear lots of grumbling about these $1200 checks that will supposedly magically materialize in a few weeks. Every public school teacher in the country will have no interruption in pay, the checks will keep rolling in even though they are off work. They will receive the fed check.

However, the old folks who live meager existences on their retirement check (and I know quite a few), who do not file income tax returns, for the most part, will get nothing.

Does anyone know if this is accurate? I've heard checks will only be going out to those who have filed tax returns last year or this year (which will also eliminate much of the service industry who bring in $'s below the poverty rate and do not file tax returns). Yes, I saw the comments here yesterday that everyone should file regardless of income, but many many do not.

sigh

just got the breathless txt from my daughter: OMG!! They're enforcing the lock-down starting a t Noon!! Go to the store right now & buy all the things!!!

one of her cow-orker's cousin's girlfriend's brother know a nurse at UofM Hospital and they're MOBILIZING THE NATIONAL GUARD to enforce the 24 / 7 curfew starting at Noon

I pointed out that this was the fourth time in three days that one of her cow-orkers has pitched a variant of this rumor, & it hasn't been true yet

only thing I've seen involving the MI Nat.Guard is that they are assisting the MI Health & Human Services department with PPE for medical personnel

The Dems are spreading it about that Slow Joe may be doddering, but it's okay because he'll be run by geniuses.

The truth is that these "geniuses" were only hired by Joe because they were even dumber than he is.

That is to say, if they were really smart, they'd be the ones in the Big Chair, not sycophants dancing for their dinner.

This is how politics really work. The skillset to be a staffer consists of a total lack of shame and utter subservience. That's it. No other knowledge is required.

Hillary's staff worked the exact same way. So did Obama's.

This brings me to why I hate comparisons with H1N1. It was a shitshow, not a success story, and we got very lucky - unless you were one of the 12,000 people who needlessly died.

Michigan's numbers are spiking but that's because of increased testing. The positive thing is that we aren't seeing huge growth outside of Metro Detroit, which means the rest of the state may have contained it.

In another week we'll know for sure.

422 "This thing is different, and we're not sure what percentage of people will have permanent disabilities because of it." Lloyd

true ... of course that is true with many issues we recover from. Most somewhat concerning issues I see in myself as I approach Medicare age, are traced back to incidents from my youth ... bronchitis, or various accidents, broken leg improperly set (one leg became shorter, resulting in much later back issues), some frostbite from a ten day hiking/climbing outing that dumped snow/cold on us. But for 20-30 years I just felt fully recovered, minor inconveniences at times.

But yes, this thing can leave a lasting impact ... I really hope these new treatments will alleviate much of that threat. Early results are very promising.

426 I'm using death rates as a better indicator than infection rates. But a death from a KungFlu complication is not necessarily a virus death. People that die from heart attacks while doing laundry don't get counted as a laundry death.

This isn't the same of course, but people that are pushed over their precarious health condition edge due to the virus are not really virus deaths. I'm not sure how the cause of death stats are being counted, but the complicating conditions are at least be noted.

If you're still drawing full pay then no, I don't think you should. Listening to Levin yesterday, he mentioned that between him, the wife and kids, they'd get about $3900 but that they didn't need it and would probably donate to charity. On the other hand, a college student working part time for peanuts, who makes less than 8k a year and is now unemployed, would get nothing if they didn't file a tax return due to being below the poverty line. Neither would my elderly neighbor, who lives on a retirement fund of 1K a month.

432 > Back in 2010, they were still wearing BDUs, which made them look kind of silly, given their mission set.

Hstorically they were given uniforms because they worked on battlefields. Diseases used to regularly kill more soldiers than enemy bullets, back in the Bad Old Days. They needed uniforms so they wouldn't be considered spies, if captured.

In the age of chemical and biological weapons, that could well become important again.

Same thing with the NOAA uniforms. Those come from the old U.S. Geological Survey. Those guys used to be landed days to weeks in advance of a planned invasion, to make land maps and nautical charts. It's easy to forget how important that was in the age of GPS, but it was really, really important. They had guys on the beach in Normandy two full weeks before the D-Day landing. Talk about having your ass hanging out in the grass...

Same thing with the islands in the South Pacific in WWII.
