Saturday Morning Coffee Break

rise-shine-20200302-1015.jpg

Any identifiable tattoos on today's coffee drinker?

Hey good morning Morons & Lurkers. Yes, it's an open thread and you're free to discuss anything you wish. But..........how long can we chat before we talk about the Kung Flu? I know, it doesn't help that yours truly isn't cooperating with the links below.

So let's take a look at a few things that didn't get much attention anywhere.

***

  • Pride. What pride?

  • A breakup is gonna be a bitch.

  • Now it's the Babies of Walmart.

  • Inappropriate viewing history? No shit, Sherlock.

  • Whatever Dude.

  • Elephants are Morons, who knew?

  • Dumb Fuck Genius Award Winner.

Complaints about the photo above the fold, 1-999-Bite-Me.

Enjoy. Be nice to one another and don't run with sharp objects. Camp Misanthrope is wishing you a fantastic weekend!!!!

62 Spring has sprung!! Good morning all. Well except for you over there in the corner.

    But enough about coronavirus.

Meanwhile, this week on the beachhead at Anzio in 1944, it was a slow week...

...well except for the random artillery shell that almost took out the small Stinson L-4 observation plane my dad was flying in.Whew!

    21 - 26 Mar 1944
Five days in a row with nothing exciting enough to even write about. Weather fair - occasional light showers. A liberal sprinkling of 170's is connected with the atmosphere. Had one land fairly close - a few fragments lit around, but nothing very scary. Some indication that Gerry has something "in the air", though nothing definite yet.
Had my first "Cub" ride along the front the 25th. Very quiet. A 155 shell came buzzing very close to the plane to add to the interest.

    and the next day:

    27 Mar 1944
Just to show how close those things can come, a plane from 1st Armd was hit by a 155 today. Both men killed; plane total wreck.

I'm not sure but I'm guessing he distinguished the difference between different caliber shells by the sound, each size round presumably having its own distinct buzz (at least to an artilleryman's ear).

64 It has occurred to me that those with the loudest voices in today's society are those who's incomes are totally derivative of those who are actually working and producing. And they think they will be untouched by the shutdown which is happening to the rest of us - Government Employees, MSM members, retirreees who depend on checks in the mail. They're all about to find out what happens when everything they rely on dries up and blows away.

I was thinking of the sports world - tens of thousands of people who make their livings, who focus their lives on sports. And overnight, PFFFFT! It's all gone. Just... gone.

    I doubt it will.

My nephew just graduated med school and the family planned a big party, rented beach houses, lots of people flying in from coast to coast, but it is not going to happen. It's in May as well. Sad because military was supposed to be there for him in his full dress whites.

I hope they do it eventually, just postpone it. But a lot of the folks that were going to travel, friends and family won't make it, no doubt.

Did battle yesterday with the overgrowth, which hasn't been touched in several years, around the pond out in the back forty. Got about a quarter of it done before my strength gave out.

In the course of it I managed to get the riding mower stuck. With the zero-turn ones all the weight is in the back, so they're almost impossible to lift out. Took about an hour to get it free.

Coronavirus: Four members of New Jersey family die

Four people in the same family have died from coronavirus in the US state of New Jersey, with three more relatives in hospital.

Grace Fusco, 73, and six of her adult children fell ill after attending a large family gathering.

Nearly 20 other relatives are now self-quarantining and waiting to find out if they have also been infected.

The death toll across the US has continued to rise, as experts warn against any kind of social gathering.

The four family members who died are Grace Fusco and her children Rita Fusco-Jackson, Carmine Fusco and Vincent Fusco.

Rita Fusco-Jackson, a Catholic school teacher, 55, died on Friday. She had no underlying health issues, according to state health commissioner Judith Persichilli.

New Jersey health officials said Ms Fusco-Jackson was the second person to die from Covid-19 in the state, and the first fatality had also recently attended a Fusco family gathering.

Carmine Fusco died on Wednesday, followed hours later by his mother, Grace Fusco.

According to the New York Times, Grace Fusco died without knowing that two of her children had already succumbed to the deadly respiratory illness sweeping the planet.

On Thursday, Vincent Fusco died in the same hospital where his mother had recently passed.

According to family member Paradiso Fodera, 19 family members who attended the same dinner are now self-isolating, and have waited nearly a week to learn the results of their virus tests.

96 "At least the weeds thriveth so from a distance it looks greenish, mostly!"
2,4-D is a cheap and effective chemical for spring use on lawns. It kills broadleafs, and can really knock down flowers/vegetables/grapes. But in spring before they leaf out, it is pretty safe.

Also (use the esther version, not amine, less volatile) ... in cooler Spring it is unlikely to volatilize after application, which happens in summer. And a lighter rate will not really harm the clover much, if you have a clover mix (which I like, but is not part of many "manicured" lawns).

The local Farm Store will have concentrated 2,4-D and generic "Round-Up" ... a gallon of each will save a lot of money, and for most homeowners will last for a decade. I spray like 6 ounces 2,4-D per acre, and a quart or two of generic Round-Up. (to kill everything, Round-up kills everything green, good for rock gardens and driveway cracks)

The problem is, only if you watch it in entirety do you get the truth.

News channels in Canada, pretty much all of them, have become fake news across the board.

One channel, CBC, did not even show the "journalist's" questions, only Trump's response yesterday - and had preceded it with only "a journalist was just asking about the virus blah blah blah" very generic, as if the journalist was an angel and Trump attacked him out of the blue. It was unbelievable.

Another channel edited the "journalist" to act like it was a perfectly good question, then played Trump's attack.

He's not getting a break from many news outlets all over the world, yet he and his team are doing better than any other leader.

142 Our nearest Walmart supercenter has full time cops hanging around their unmarked SUVs, two vehicles, blackout glass, the hidden LEDs flashing in the windscreen, tailgate, and lights, the deputies in flak vests.

It began on Wednesday, runs from open to close, is at the grocery door door, the one closest to the toilet paper aisle, and the cops are county deputies.

They are at the vehicles which are parked right along the bollard line at the entrance/exit, outside the doors. No cops inside.

However, I was told (pardonezz moi) that Louisiana has the highest per-capita virus growth numbers. We are not going to turn on CNN or MSNBC or ABC or NBC or CBS or PBS, because we think we know what to expect.

Why subject ourselves to the doom and gloom? In the darkest days of the London blitz during WWII, the dancehalls and clubs all remained open.

What I think seems off and bad during this, is that there is no good feeling that I get when out to get necessary supplies. No smiles, no "we're in this together" vibes. Everyone looks grim and suspicious.

217 Because we've got the winter snowbird season going on here in SW FL, and I guess it is strictly because of this, the local and state governments have taken no steps to close restaurants.

The national chains, afraid of tarring their image, have mandated closing down to takeout-only status, but we have 90 percent locally owned restaurants in this 1.2 million population metro area, and even though there's a from-the-governor "advisement" that they pare down capacity by 50 percent and have 10 foot table spacing, most are ignoring that.

Seems not-OK to me. We are not rural downstate IL or the Adirondack region of upstate NY. We are packed-to-the-walls coastal Florida.

243 "six of her adult children fell ill after attending a large family gathering."

my opinion/hypothesis is that there can be one "super-spreader" that can give larges doses to several people. That can be a worker in a retirement home that has repeated close contact with many people.

A casual one time dose in public from a shopping cart is different than a repeated close contact from a contagious person. Especially a family in a closed space, hugs, kisses, all surfaces and utensils being contaminated... and so on.

The early dose of inoculum matters. A tiny dose may take 6 days to reach the in-body level of inoculum ... that might be gotten on day one from a family gathering close contact. That is a six day head start the inoculum gets in the body, so maybe the incubation period is two days instead of 12 (just making up numbers).

I've seen specialists say this, it is not my theory really. But how it applies in particular to this KungFlu may be unique. But the body needs those extra days to start building the antibody (?) response, and that is surely part of why some have mild symptoms, some go to the hospital.

The UK has changed from letting the general public get infected to accomplish a "herd protection". How much of that was a political decision instead of scientific idk. But closing a pub where one asymptomatic person can slime a lot of surfaces and breath on his friends ... probably a good idea.

Those working necessary jobs are hopefully practicing clean technique and as much social distancing as possible. That and the better treatments should end this thing sooner rather than later.

    yep

No one saves anymore. I know that some cannot, but priorities.

But even those with continued income, I notice it was the No Name generic products that were being sold out first, those cheaper items for emergency stocking. Unless there were sales on the more known brands.

    15K.

In this area, a truck with less than 100K miles on it generally goes for 20K plus.

The one English guy spread it all over Switzerland and then to the UK during the course of his holiday jaunt.

Taleb talks about this and how the modeling doesn't account for super-spreaders and how they can blow up the normal distribution.

That's why looking backwards and extrapolating the trend forwards can get you utterly wrong results. It's like driving using your rear-view mirror.

Taleb has been very critical of the UK model.

Posted by: Tonypete at March 21, 2020 10:00 AM (Y4EXg)

When we last bought we found out what that no haggle, low price model is about. Sure, the price is reasonable upfront. Then they try to gouge you on the trade-in. Pass.

The real fun comes when you get to finish the two stage process, where they try to lard up the sale with all kinds of warranties, protection plans, etc. It was tedious, but kind of fun arguining with the guy about how he's convincing me to not buy the car by arguing that I should be expecting it to break down.

Clearly, their big profits come at the back end, and that's where they put the high pressure folks.

    I hate sales people.

I looked over my shoulder to be sure it wasn't a prank as I didn't remember her from a whole in the wall.

It wasn't until ten mins later that I realized that had coached her older brother in baseball mumble mumble years ago and she was his little side kick..

I wonder how much of it is money vs creative interest.

Working writers want sales in a way that part-timers don't. Tolkien, for example, wasn't in it for the money, he just got really into creating stuff.

R.E. Howard, by contrast, wanted money, and a bunch of his stories were nothing more than money grabs, especially when he realized that sexy scenes would make the cover and get him even more money.

367 My son went wind surfing yesterday. At 7:00PM I went down to the marina to find him for dinner. I found his jeep with no sign of him on the water. The Potomac was at high tide and the wind was blowing up river. I knew he must be up river with no ability to tack back against tide and winds. I drove to Jones Point to see if he landed up there. Arriving at the parking lot under the Woodrow Wilson Bridge I found a firetruck, ambulance and a crew of seven firemen standing about. I asked if they were responding to a windsurfer. They said they were. I asked if he was alive. They reported that he was and that he was being picked up on the Maryland side by a rescue boat. The boat would land at Jones Point. We the boat tied up to the pier I spied future leader on the port side rail and announced to the two crews 'This is my son. He has shit for brains.' Everyone laughed including my son. On the drive back I remembered the two of us watching the construction of the Woodrow Wilson bridge when he was four. We were always going creeking. We both like drainage systems - big and small. Mom was relieved. I got some pictures of the boy with rescue crews. Then I realized how old I'm getting. Big thoughts in the time of plague.

I didn't see them relate dose rate to the UK issue. It seemed fear of 10k dying while the herd immunity developed was the main reason for change. But clearly the close contact in confined spaces, over time (as opposed to touching a door knob once) ... is part of the thinking.

I've been using the term "clean technique", which may not apply, but I learned it from a nurse doing a catheter ... I noted it was not purely "sterile technique" (cuz my one microbiology class made me an expert, ha). She said it was clean technique. (it's a clean machine, very clean)

Verdict still out on NSAIDs (afaik) ... there is no evidence it is an issue, but not quite certain it is NOT an issue. For most it is probably fine, but there are always certain cases that might suggest higher risk, and in general acetaminophen seems safer for fever. I'm sure protocols are being developed as we speak.

As a result of the chatter regarding NSAIDs and the potential contraindications regarding the China virus, I bought my first bottle of acetaminophen in decades this morning (one of the few remaining on the shelf). When I have a fever, I generally leave it alone and let it do its job unless it becomes dangerously high (like the 106.7 degree fever I had a little over a year ago). I don't do booze whilst sick, so I'll just stick with acetaminophen for those rare occasions.

You need to take into account the rate of testing as well.

What a more meaningful statistic would be is positive results per test administered.

That would give you a better idea of the infection rate over time since testing has not been constant and will increase over time.

What a more meaningful statistic would be is positive results per test administered.

Well, we go there maybe once, or twice a year. Usually when we are hosting guests because "you just have to go there".

It's really not that great of food... just deep fried to hell and back. The fried clams are just batter. There's a little shack up on Route 77 down the street from Kettle Cove that has amazing fried clams. Inn by the Sea has the best lobster roll. Also the food truck over at Fort Williams has better lobster.

The only thing the shack has going for it is the view. It's amazing being able to eat right on the rocks on the ocean. Just - don't be there around sundown in the summer. There's a family of fairly tame skunks that live in the rocks there and brazenly start waltzing through throngs of tourists to pick up the scraps left on the ground at the end of the day.

Also, when you decide that you want to come visit the light houses because they're right there - just pay attention to the signs that say "NO ACCESS TO LIGHTHOUSES" - since they're both on private property and we take pictures of everyone who trespasses up here

Tylenol is damaging to the liver if you take a lot for a long time, so people use ibuprofen daily instead for workout pain to prevent inflammation. Now, inflammation triggers some antibody synthesis, preventing this with NSAIDS decreases the immune response even when you need it most

516 As a result of the chatter regarding NSAIDs and the
potential contraindications regarding the China virus, I bought my first
bottle of acetaminophen in decades this morning (one of the few
remaining on the shelf). When I have a fever, I generally leave it
alone and let it do its job unless it becomes dangerously high (like the
106.7 degree fever I had a little over a year ago). I don't do booze
whilst sick, so I'll just stick with acetaminophen for those rare
    occasions.

Somewhat related, people around these parts are often ragging on social sciences, rightfully so.

What amazes me, in addition to the questionable "science" that is perpetrated all the time, is how people respond to it. Humans are programmed to believe what we see, to think if we read it, it must be true... and then to not read too deeply into things.

So you could run a trial on almost anything, jack the data, load the conditions so you get results you want, and hide the bias somewhere deep enough, so everyone starts to believe you when you reach your conclusions.

And that kind of crap is published EVERYWHERE. And people who "should" know better just eat it up like it's burned onto tablets by God Himself.

Rogers testified for a friend once-- I wish I could remember who it was. Some famous showbiz star. He testified in the damages portion of a civil trial, in which the jury was being asked to calculate Rogers' friend's lost income.

He testified that he made $5 million in the most recent year prior to the trial, & that that was about average for the preceding 5 years, as I recall.

I thought it was classy of him to reveal this very personal information in public, just to help his friend.

Sadly, the anti-fat (in foods) campaign is still raging with the Greenies, and much of the establishment. The low carb evidence is building though.
