The Morning Rant: Minimalist Edition

punk-monkey.jpg

We have had a seemingly unending string of mealy-mouthed accommodationists running the state department, but it is statements like this that warm the cockles of my heart. Michael Pompeo may be the best Secretary Of State since...um...George Schultz?

Khamenei’s Lies About the Wuhan Virus Put Lives at Risk

Supreme Leader Khamenei’s fabrications regarding the Wuhan Virus are dangerous and they put Iranians and people around the world at greater risk. Facts matter. Here are a few the Iranian regime would like to keep from the world:

Fact: In February, Iran’s chief terror airline, Mahan Air, ran at least 55 flights between Tehran and China, further infecting the Iranian people. At least five foreign countries’ first cases of coronavirus were directly imported from Iran, putting millions more lives at risk.

Fact: The Iranian regime ignored repeated warnings from its own health officials, and denied its first death from the coronavirus for at least nine days. The regime continues to lie to the Iranian people and the world about the number of cases and deaths, which are unfortunately far higher than the regime admits.

Fact: As Iranian regime officials ask for more funds, it is important to note that since 2012, Iran has spent over $16 billion on terror abroad, and used sanctions relief from the JCPOA to fill up its proxies’ coffers. Regime officials stole over a billion Euros intended for medical supplies, and continue to hoard desperately needed masks, gloves, and other medical equipment for sale on the black market.

Fact: U.S. sanctions do not target imports of food, medicine and medical equipment, or other humanitarian goods. Iranian documents show their health companies have been able to import testing kits without obstacle from U.S. sanctions since January.

Fact: The United States has offered over $100 million in medical assistance to foreign countries, including to the Iranian people, and our scientists are working tirelessly to develop a vaccine. Khamenei rejected this offer because he works tirelessly to concoct conspiracy theories and prioritizes ideology over the Iranian people.

It is the job of the secretary of state to communicate the foreign policy of the United States to its allies and enemies around the world. It is not in his purview to run a rogue operation with his personal foreign policy. That doesn't sound difficult, yet it has been a constant tussle for many presidents, and Michael Pompeo seems to understand that. What a pleasure!

A robust geopolitical stance with aggressive and swift communication of America's needs and wants and opinions does not mean that we are thirsting for war. In fact, it will result in quite the opposite. Clarity in our intentions and desires means that there is no confusion in the halls of power around the world.

Now, it'll take time, like everywhere, they're all hunkered down in the houses now. But the regime is fatally wounded, just waiting for the right person in Iran to take charge.

26 just in case anyone wasn't clear on how this works:

1995

GOP: "let's cut the rate of increase in spending"

Democrats/media: "ZOMG YOU RACIST SEXIST HOMOPHOBE BIGOTS, the answer is to spend"

2009

GOP: "let's not spend on stimulus"

Democrats/media: "ZOMG YOU RACIST SEXIST HOMOPHOBE BIGOTS, the answer is to spend"

2020

GOP: "let's spend!"

Democrats/media: "ZOMG YOU RACIST SEXIST HOMOPHOBE BIGOTS, the answer is to spend MORE"

So the "conservative" party has been co-opted; its plan to fix problems is just to print more money and spend it. And that's not good enough for the Democrats, who have technically WON-- it's no longer a question of spending OR cutting, of increasing or decreasing the government's role. It's a question of how much bigger we're going to make the government in response to EVERYTHING, ALL THE TIME. But even that's not good enough for them.

Son's girlfriend's boss's best friend has COVID-19. Her boss is getting tested, and my husband has sent son home until he's tested.

If son tests positive, he's exposed everyone in the company, my husband included. He's waiting to hear from the VA if he can get in today for the test.

Son's girlfriend lives and works in Beaufort, SC, and travels over to son's house in the Savannah area on the weekends. When her boss returned from Italy three weeks ago, I strongly suggested they remain apart for a couple of weeks.

Prayers for our son, his girlfriend, and all of us please.

It's called "federalism," Ben. Someone who was helping drive policy and messaging for the executive branch of the Federal government ought to understand how devolution of powers and local control works. And Trump has been pretty consistent overall. Yes, lots of details change. We're moving from "unreliable data" to "some reliable data" to "a little bit of local data" into "lots of local data." As the quality of our knowledge improves, so will the consistency of our actions.

But it is not guaranteed, because ours is a system built on local controls. You should know that.

98 If it turns out that Chloroquine is, say, 50% effective that has *huge* implications on overall badness of this thing. We will find out. But if it is moderately useful, that is a huge victory that will be downplayed by the press. In Italy, most people who get to "ventilator" stage die. If you can keep them from that stage half the time, your effective death rate collapses. It will regardless be declared a failure by the media when it is in fact a success in a very meaningful way.

And it is also a major foreign policy victory. Trump delayed the outbreak here bigly by restricting travel from hot spots, and those without those restrictions (Europe) or who were much closer to the problem (Asia) found the thing that helps and we are able to take huge shortcuts based on their early exposure and our late exposure.

And neither the foreign policy victory nor the (hopeful) medical improvement will be declared as anything but the deranged failures of a xenophobic madman.

If NYC is bad enough to justify shutting down all of America, then it should be put in state receivership and sealed up, with National Guard making sure nobody enters/leaves until there's not a trace of WuFlu. Why hasn't that been done? Doesn't public health demand it?

Want to contain the spread in major hotspots like New York City? Shut down all travel there. Close all airports and public transportation, and block all bridges and tunnels. Shelter-in-place for 6-8 weeks. And let the rest of America get back to work.

He probably meant of known infections.

Keep in mind Italy, whatever their intentions, are using their triage process to clear out a lot of patients who were already dying of something (and often multiple somethings). So if you had stage 4 pancreatic cancer, and caught kung flu, you don't get a respirator and die, and they count it as a kung flu fatality.

152 Running for any political office requires at a minimum (no guarantees but you have to have these):

Charisma (attractiveness. Not beauty/handsome but attractive to people

Friendly (make people feel you're interested in them even if you're not)

Clever (know who to suck up to and when and who to crush and when)

Without these basics you can get elected but only to the lower levels of government.

Note: honesty, truthfulness, patriotism, morals are not required (and many, many others). They actually may hinder.

Remember we (as a People) get the government we (as a People) deserve.

Unfortunately we still have a lot left over from the crypto commie mistake from on the lake and they are the ones who are doing most all the damage. But Trump can't fire them all at once or he'd have no government.

I'm of the opinion that the President is overloaded with too much to do from day one. We should have an elected Chief of Staff (names of nominees offered by the Presidential Nominee only) who would begin immediately the process of vetting and firing all those from a previous admin who cannot be trusted. And should then be his Chief of Staff for all open positions that now Trump has to approve (well the people he selects for that job)

Mistakes were made as Trump was not an insider. Not having been in DC for decades and knew all the assholes and bastards by name. He'd only heard about a few.

Plus I think he actually trusted Obama to some degree. He was taken in just like half the country.

Remember, before the liars flipped the data, the progs actually tested higher for "authoritarianism" than cons.

First, they always want more control, so the idea that Trump isn't going into tyrant mode confuses and scares them. See the hysterical reporters and mayors (de Blasio) DEMANDING Trump issue nationwide shelter in place.

Second, this is also their biggest political weapon, which their lizard brains instinctively know: IF Trump makes the big decisions then they can relentlessly attack him for making it wrong, too early, too late, not big enough, too extreme, etc.

Trump is respecting federalism, allowing each state and major city make the decisions that work best for them (because they are infinitely more familiar with how things work there), as well as allowing each city and state leader be held accountable for these decisions. His task force is providing advice and assistance to ensure their success.

It is exactly what I'd want him to do.

177 Cuomo says New York cases are still ramping-up and he does not know when the peak will be reached there. He says, the Feds should send him all 20,000 ventilators in the strategic stockpile, NOW, to handle the current NY emergency. After NY reaches and passes its peak, he'll take personal responsibility to send ventilators he no longer needs to other states.

I seriously doubt it will work that way. Once ventilators are in a state, it will be all but impossible to get the governor to give them up. Same with Army Mobile Hospitals. When one of those units is set-up in a location, local political pressure to keep it there will be overpowering.

If every squeaky wheel gets all the grease available at the time, until manufacturing gets up to speed, the Feds will run out of grease before squeaky wheels start loudly squeaking.

Jane, you bring up something I've been meaning to point out.

IF you are going to sanitize something like a shopping cart handle, your car steering wheel etc, you need to apply the wipe solution and then leave it alone until it dries, which is usually one to two minutes. All virucidal solutions are not instant death to viruses, it takes them some period of time(varying with the solution) to actually kill or render the virus inactive. I keep seeing news clips of people, often employees, wiping down an object like they are cleaning a window. All they are doing, and Dr. Birx said this the other day, is smearing and spreading the virus around.

I'm retired from health care and had more continuing education seminars and updates than I could count on disinfecting and sanitizing surfaces, myself, patients, and the proper use of PPE equipment. If you look at the instructions on Clorox wipes or Lysol solutions, they will say the same thing , the surface must remain wet for a period of time to actually sanitize.

Also, if you are using spray type of cleaners, disinfectants, do not spray and breathe it at the same time. Either wear a mask or spray and walk away for a minute or two. Once it dries, wipe with a wet cloth, etc.

Contagion is worse with density, all other things being equal - more vectors, denser network. Any contagion will probably hit denser areas worse, and thus hit blue areas worse when taken as a generalization.

Then there came the Gorbachev Lovers and their endless Gorbasms on any thing that stain headed shit for brains came up with.

Then the became Greens cause that's what Gorbachev did after he lost the Soviet Union.

Then there was the Nation Builders and finally:

The Globalists who hate Trump because he's cut all the other nations off the American Teat and put the US back to work.

Wouldn't be surprised this virus and the reaction was cooked up by the CIA and the CCP to destroy Trump.

The destruction of the US is a side benefit. Note how the Dems have come out and said they are taking this opportunity to restructure the US forever in the mold of the Left's wish list. Because they know we ain't going to recover very fast due to the other countries also being in trouble.

Nothing like a Global disaster to make it easier for Global solutions and those who have put themselves in place to make them.

Notice that first up was the stoppage of access to firearms.

Ancient history, and very doable. The Western Development Museum in Swift Current, Saskatchewan has in its collection a home-made iron lung built by a farmer, whose daughter was stricken by polio. It was basically a wooden box with a rubber diaphragm cycled by a slowed-down washing machine mechanism.

https://preview.tinyurl.com/sxkkhds

Now, whether the iron-lung concept would work for WuFlu, I don't know. Polio caused chest paralysis, but the patients' lungs were still OK. WuFlu degrades the lungs themselves. Maybe an iron lung with added oxygen would help?

So if the run on bread yeast is prevalent, start looking for recipes for beer bread. The yeast in the beer will suffice. If you need a recipe, let me know. I'll grab the one Mrs. OCiS uses.

329 I just had my hours cut to unmanageable income level. I listened to Cuomo for 5 mins and he apparently has gotten word that his party wants him to toss Trump into the "he ain't doin nutin" dump. The Dems want to take all of us to the cleaners and require years for us to recover economically, if ever. I have never seen my Country so completely torn apart while the politicians clearly don't give a crap about the American people but rather their power and pocketbooks. Sorry for the rant, but, today I am convinced America is toast. What the Dems and media have done and continue to do during this crisis is beyond anything I could've dreamed up. Instead of pulling the Country together, they are destroying us. And there isn't a thing anyone of us can do about it except watch as they tear it all down.

Posted by: Jane D'oh at March 24, 2020 11:51 AM (ptqGC)

332 Trump needs to address this today...

He should say: "Cuomo wants us to send all the equipment to New York now, in the hope that when the peak of the crisis is over there, he will ship the units to the next place. What happens if New York is still using most of the equipment when the virus is peaking in Los Angeles? Will Governor Cuomo go through the ICUs and pick which patients will be taken off the ventilators so that the equipment can be moved?

This is the typical democrat response. Don't think of the big picture, just focus on the next move on the checker board. As president, I have to think of what's best for the entire country. Governor Cuomo, calm down and we'll all get through this together."

The longstanding hatred between Bill Murray and Chevy Chase is well documented. (and makes me think more highly of Murray) They were kept apart on that set as much as possible.

And we've talked about the script before - the basic movie was really pretty dull, with a weak script about caddy's that no one cared about. And then they chose to hire Rodney Dangerfield and Bill Murray, and let both of them just adlib their way through the movie. (I love Murray's Dalai Lama story!) Those two were allowed to say anything they wanted, and that's what made the movie great. (plus a great supporting performance by Ted Knight). Chase is really just a big zero throughout.

Murray doesn't have an agent. Just a phone number you call and ask him if he would like the role in your movie. So he's shown up in some low budget stuff just because.

409 Knight, by all accounts, was not happy during the filming, as he was a 'stick-to-the-script' man and hated it when Dangerfield would start riffing, as in the "on you, it looks good" hat scene.

Makes me think of some of the actors in Airplane who were completely unready for the parts they were given. The Zuckers deliberately cast all these straight, manly, leading he-men with square jaws to play hilarious spoof roles. Some of them could not grok the concept or what was going on at all.

Its hard to understand now especially with how damned good he was at comedic acting, but until that movie Leslie Nielsen was a completely straight dramatic actor, the guy you had play the president or the doctor who had to tell the family the bad news. Very serious, very respectable.

Will Governor Cuomo go through the ICUs and pick which patients will be taken off the ventilators so that the equipment can be moved?

The math is off, you divide the smaller number by the large number which gives you a decimal. Multiply that by 100 to get the percentage. That's an 18.2 percent death rate. As of today there are 63,927 cases and 6,077 deaths. The increase in identified cases causes the death rate to decrease, but that's still 9.5%.

Right now in Italy, there are some 13509 closed cases, and 6077 deaths which is a 45% mortality.

It does not seem likely that 45% of those cases will result in death.

501 There are people out there who think ordering GM to make ventilators would help...

Those people have never been in an auto plant.

Nothing, and I do mean nothing can be accomplished by auto workers in a timely manner. This is because of one thing - union rules.

When you're setting up a new product or process, you need to be flexible. "Hey, get me a light over here!". OK, write up a work order for the electrician's union worker. Need a piece of 2 x 4 lumber to put under a machine you're positioning? Get another work order for the carpenter's union guy. Screwing that piece of coolant pipe in? Not without a pipefitter that has a union card. Move the machine a few inches to the left? That's what the millwrights do. Want a nut or bolt from the storeroom? Call transportation and put in a request.

What a small private company can do in minutes would take GM a week.

568 I met a guy who worked trade shows promoting a product up north. He had to find a small monitor that would lean in order to face outwards from his laptop. Apparently if it had a stand you had to have whatever union workers come and remove it from your briefcase and set it up.

Worked at EDS. I was told that office workers cannot plug in their mouses, or re-plug any peripherals. They cannot be seen putting their hands in back of the box where the cords are.

All of those are reportable incidents.

572 >> Funny that the Mullahs have such a close relationship with the chicoms, since the chicoms are putting moose dicks in prison camps.

The Mullahs are old and probably need the spare body parts.

They're not selling these organs to Westerners - they're selling them to Saudis, and probably Iranians, too.

573 If we're going to base our analysis of the gravity of COVID-19 on the apparent Italian mortality rate of 30,000/5476, or 18%, then we really oughta qualify it by dividing 30,000 by the total pop of Italy: 60,480,000.

More seriously, her face is so frozen that the only way she can emote is to smile or to widen her eyes.

It is a weird an unsettling effect, especially when paired with her mouth movements to deal with her loose dentures.

578 Italy is an outlier, and I think we should hold off using it for any sort of analysis until more info comes out. I strongly suspect that their push to treat Wuhan Flu sufferers had them triage-ing out older people and letting them die from whatever, then counting them as casualties of the plague even if they died of a heart attack or cancer.

Something isn't right in the data and its not useful until we get better, more accurate info.

That doesn't make sense until you hear that their healthcare system doesn't work very well and passing deaths off as "emergency" puts the numbers in a different category.

590 What a small private company can do in minutes would take GM a week.

Posted by: jwest

You sound like my uncles.

One of my father's brothers worked at Delco as a line engineer for years. Man, the shit he told me about, the way things worked. He was always getting in trouble for fixing things to keep the line running that was supposed to be done by union pipefitters, etc.

My mother's brother had a tool and die shop, and did tooling for all the Big 3 over the years.
Yeah, he didn't have much good to say about GM, although he bought a new Cadillac every year. He always thought they were all mad at each other and immensely disorganized.

He predicted they would go bankrupt someday back in the late 1980's.

Skip- I believe that there are a lot of demographic particulars that are being suppressed because it would be politically incorrect to provide such details, including the outbreak in New York. I have a cousin in NJ with kids in NYC and she gave me the impression that there is concentration in certain communities. Of course, HIPPA would be blamed for the lack of disclosure of that information.

I heard Cuomo say he needed all those ventilators. Where does he think they would come from? You would have to strip virtually every ventilator currently in the nation to get that number of them. He is gladly willing to f*ck-over the rest of the nation.
