39 Wetlands!

Posted by: Count de Monet at March 26, 2020 09:36 AM (q1Pj5)

40 It looks tidal, and tidal areas like estuaries are good.

There's an odd lack of salt marsh, though, sawgrass and the like. It looks like a tidal area next to farmland, so maybe it's way upstream.

I would go down to the mouth and poke a fly around the edges. The game fish wait for the bait to be swept off the mud flats.

I don't see that either. It could be a matter of an imperfect translation of the original German title. Without knowing that definition, I took largeness as literal, and thought of "Big Sky Country" in Montana. All nature and no people for miles around. Although there look to be a tiny boat in the creek, off-center right.

96 Cranberry bog.

Nah, cranberry bogs are artificial impoundments. They keep a level of water in the bog all summer and then it's released in the fall for the harvest.

That means it blocks natural streams. Nearly every stream on Cape Cod was bogged in the 19th century and it extincted the sea run brook trout.

526 465 "$400 million in election assistance for the states to help prepare for the 2020 election cycle, including to increase the ability to vote by mail and expand early voting and online registration."

Trump could, if he really wanted, sign an executive order barring the results of any election for federal office if it isn't conducted in accordance with the Constitution.

The main point is that the Constitution lays out the date for the election. Trump can argue that the plain language and meaning in that document is that all voting is to occur simultaneously throughout the country, barring early voting. Also, he could make the case that voting, except in extreme circumstances, needs to be in person so that all can see that the voter is voting secretly and privately, without undue influence.

Might as well toss in positive identification as a citizen too.

123 So, one of my fellow grad school students from the statistics master's program posted on FB. This woman is absurd liberal. Anyway, she just posted that based on the statistics and data she's seen, this reaction to COVID is an overreaction and we need to get over it.

No, the idea is to keep the comments on the art -- or limericks or fish puns -- and not to make everything a relentless slag about politics.

It makes this thread a refuge.

The Dildo was gentle about it in the beginning but there were some assholes who insisted that politics is the only thing that's important and I just had an opinion and this is a politics site and you're not the boss of me.

So now we have rules. We have rules because people can't behave on their own.

Sort of. I used to be surrounded by bogs in my old home. Every fall they would submerge the bogs with water and the berries would float to the surface where they would be skimmed off. Then the water was drained and the bog would start regenerating for the next crop.

Pretty cool way to harvest but it seemed incredibly inefficient.

YD and I were chatting once about the vast number of words we have for what are, in essence, swamps. Here is what I can come up with off the top of my head:
- Swamp
- (Quag)Mire
- Bog
- Fen
- Marsh
- Wetland

I know we came up with at least several more at the time. Our language has high precision in the area of swamps. I think "marsh" is pretty good for this scene.

200 I'm not sure whether Friedrich had an exact location in mind, but the picture reminds me of photos I've seen of Kalkriese, an area near Osnabruck now thought to be the site of the end game of the battle of the Teutoburg Forest in 9 AD. Tacitus described the Romans as being trapped between a low swampy bog (it had rained torrentially for several days) and a low slope that the German tribesmen hid behind to ambush the Romans. That part of northern Germany has a lot of wetlands, and Friedrich might have visited them.

I'm not sure whether Friedrich had an exact location in mind, but the
picture reminds me of photos I've seen of Kalkriese, an area near
Osnabruck now thought to be the site of the end game of the battle of
the Teutoburg Forest in 9 AD. Tacitus described the Romans as being
trapped between a low swampy bog (it had rained torrentially for several
days) and a low slope that the German tribesmen hid behind to ambush
the Romans. That part of northern Germany has a lot of wetlands, and
Friedrich might have visited them.

I can't decide if it is supposed to be sunrise or sunset but I'm inclined to a waking of day. The still shallow waters make me think that. The scene is not consequential but the feelings it evokes are strong.

Kris, there is a documentary on YouTube titled The Lost Legions of Varus, which is not a full-length movie (it's about 50 minutes long) but includes some reenactment of the battle. What I found particularly interesting was modern historians' discussion of the impact of the battle in separating Germany culturally from other parts of Europe that retained a stronger Roman influence. There is also some archaeologists' perspectives on their findings, including descriptions of some of the artifacts recovered-- including a wonderful silver face mask.

FP's sheer level of imagination --

-- a power center of nuclear plants twenty miles across, deep, and wide; the fact that we are required to imagine what the Krell looked like (the flattened doors in the Krell complex, Morbius says, gives a clue); the notion of the id (Freudianism was the rage in the '50s, remember) being powered by the Krell installation; Robbie's following of the Three Laws of Robotics; the requirement that the starship crewmen have to go into a kind of stasis while the ship slows from trans-light speed --

. . . all make it an "A" picture for sure. As close to SF on film as you can ask for.

There's always The Mind of Mr. Soames, but that is a different scale of SF.

Coolio.

But Persona's one of those movies that is intentionally hard. It's unlike almost any other Bergman and it's stylistically reactive rather than what he normally did.

Still, I see it like Joyce's Ulysses. Once you know how to watch it, it opens up and invites you in. It's kind of the ultimate art house movie that way. There's no mass appeal there.

There was a comment at the end of JJ's thread, about how the Market was schizophrenic, shooting up and shooting down seemingly at random: I believe that the Markets are now completely political, and no longer are being primarily influenced by any real financial estimations. What I mean by "political" - when it looked like their would be shutdowns without much government intervention, the markets collapsed. Now that it looks like the Feds will spend whatever it takes, $2 Trillion and counting, to keep the economy on life support. As long as there is that kind of commitment, the markets will be propped up. But it's all in reaction to what's coming out of Washington DC, nothing else.

The guy who loaded my car told me they were shocked at how many people are still going into the store and not taking precautions. The staff is nervous, it sounds like.

He said people are coming in with their children and going into the toy aisle, etc. He couldn't believe it. He was a young guy too. Early 20's I think. Very nice.

He said people are acting like there is nothing going on. Business as usual.

First time I tried leaving a tip in the back and I asked if they are allowed to take it and he said "Oh yes!" and grabbed it, thanking me. lol He was excited.

Anyway, I know a lot of the horde thanks their grocers, but evidently some customers are willy nilly as if nothing is going on.

That battle would make a great movie.

Kris, there is a documentary on YouTube titled The Lost Legions of Varus,
which is not a full-length movie (it's about 50 minutes long) but
includes some reenactment of the battle. What I found particularly
interesting was modern historians' discussion of the impact of the
battle in separating Germany culturally from other parts of Europe that
retained a stronger Roman influence. There is also some archaeologists'
perspectives on their findings, including descriptions of some of the
artifacts recovered-- including a wonderful silver face mask.

Here's a link if you're interested: https://tinyurl.com/v4z539o

Which brings us back to today's painting.. or the artist, really. That cultural divide was still present in Friedrich's day, although Napoleon's conquests were doing a good job erasing the line. Friedrich was a dyed-in-the-wool German, proud about the history and distinctness of its culture. Arminius was a cultural hero to him. He was a huge proponent of German nationalism and statehood. While his art of course shows classical influences in it, his work is full of Germanic longing, romantic German landscapes and symbolism.
I will check out the link.

I have always thought that Gattaca was one of the most well written sci-fi movies ever produced. (people who are addicted to Michael Bay 'splosions think it's boring) It does what Sci-fi as a genre does best - show us society with just a few changes (such as the belief that potential can be accurately and scientifically predicted by genetics) and then demonstrate what that change would mean to the people who have to live with it.

419 For me the difference between SF and fantasy is that with SF there are rules that are known or defined, they can't be broken, and they from a framework or a rough supportive skeleton for the plot.

For fantasy, rules are noted and broken and the braking of known or defined rules assist the plot. An extended deus ex machina.

I think, though the Medical Morons can correct if wrong:
- A respirator is something you wear on your face that cleans the air coming and out
- A ventilator is a mechanical device, part of which is shoved down your throat to push air into and out of the lungs.

One cleans the air you're breathing normally, the other mechanically ventilates your lungs.

So far I just can't see
You're so far away from me

Kris, I think you'll enjoy the documentary, even though it's only very indirectly about nineteenth-century art. But it does include a segment about that statue of Arminius known as the Hermannsdenkmal.

Speaking of Napoleon-- my dad once commented that he was part of the first major invasion of Germany from the West since Napoleon's day. Since my family is ethnically German, I suppose he found it something of a homecoming. He said that the parts of Germany that were not torn up by the war reminded him of southern Pennsylvania, where we lived when I was a kid.

497 I think the administration needs to beat the drum on this stimulus bill. The $1200 checks (which we won't get in this house) are nice and all.

What is a bigger deal is the SBA "loans" that are coming - a company can borrow 8 weeks of payroll and overhead and at the end of the 8 weeks, if they kept all their employees on payroll, the loan is forgiven.

I am sure there are some restrictions, but keeping people getting paychecks is a HUGE deal and better than a $1200 one time payment.

Only thing is, likely not. Just not reporting cases.
Kits exported to other countries for testing have a high failure rate.
And authoritarian lockdown (ie, nailing people into their apartments) might not work in other countries.

So yeah, Trump knows what they are trying to do, and Pompeo is no dummy.

They seem to be setting up to guide expectations toward "end of summer." Per the Examiner:
The top federal prosecutor for Connecticut was on pace to finish his inquiry sometime in the summer, according to a report by Fox News on Monday. One source "suggested the investigation could end as soon as July." Another "said it could be closer to September, based on Durham's progress, which could be hindered by the coronavirus pandemic rocking the nation and the globe."

It's either gonna be a nothingburger or the hugest "October Surprise" in history. I lean toward "nothingburger."

It didn't hurt that the author served as a Red Army officer (an anti-tank artillery unit) on the same battlefield (Prussian front) thirty years after Tannenberg. In Solzhenitsyn's cycle of novels devoted to the Russian Revolution, "August 1914" is referred to as "The Red Wheel #1".

684 All relevant sources and methods (which I can't tell you about) point to the conclusion that we are probably well and truly fxxxxxxed. Or, maybe not. All policies and plans should be based on this conclusion.

Next slide please.

Now an update on our world wide efforts to locate memorial bridge.

685 sniffybigtoe, Dollar General carries teaspoons that are the old, small size...three for a buck. They're perfect for tea, especially if you drink it with honey, and I keep a pretty mug full of them on the counter. Like you, I live on tea.

Brian Dennehy was great in the dual roles of the ship and the iceberg, though.

Can't overlook that.

This has nothing to do with closing. It's about staying open.

I think, if you are a small business (under 500 employees), you can apply for the loan and get it.

My banker said my company probably wouldn't qualify for SBA loan, because too many assets (cash.) Although, my banker is a newbie dipshit loan office and is probably talking out his ass.

688 Yesterday, local dollar store had at least 30 one gallon plastic buckets. What's that about?

I picked up a couple because one cannot have enough one gallon plastic buckets.

689 Anyway, she just posted that based on the statistics and data she's seen, this reaction to COVID is an overreaction and we need to get over it.

Interesting...

It's sure feeling that way. Outside a few hot-spots, I think this bull$h!t winds-down ricky-tick. The tell is Gov. Fredo Sr telling his subjects that the projected doubling of new cases has gone from 2 days to 4.x days. As an engineer, I know all about curve-fitting; I want to know what your actual numbers are.

I really would like to see influenza deaths per day compared to Wuhan Lung Rot deaths per day. More and more doctors are publicly going on Fox and saying that they have been using the Trump cocktail with good success on their patients with SARS-CoV-2 (to use the WHO designation, which China hates).

690 Democrats literally tanked the oil market today. Crude is down 4.2% because Democrats eliminated refilling the SPR at historically low prices from the relief bill.

All to say they are "Green", Democrats have prevented oil workers from getting equal relief and we will now have to use more taxpayer money to refill the SPR when prices go up. Unreal.

We need to win the House back.
