This is a great one for examining the technique of painting. The colors are just slapped on thickly. It has ridges and grooves that really need to be seen in raking light or from the side. It's like he's sculpting the painting.

Not a big fan of Van Gogh. The brush strokes remind me of a crude Impressionism. If different colors, obvious brush work and a certain brightness appeal, his style is fine. I don't know why his work was considered so important.

Go Man van Gogh!
From the sky to the little stream, from the plastered walls to the little faceless woman and the man in the purple coat, from the mountains in the background to the grasses an shrubs in front of the house, nothing looks like its real texture. Just swirls and dabs and swabs and blobs. Yet you can feel how difficult and uneven those old stairs are, you can count the pickets in the fence. You can almost imagine the rapport between the old couple. The brushstrokes also form a cascade, a visual flow, from the upper-left to the bottom. I kinda like it. Decades ago in the CompuServe literary forum, an author remarked, "I just hope nobody ever finds out that all I'm doing is putting words on paper." It is a glorious feeling to manipulate raw materials into artwork, whether forming from clay, envisioning in text, imagining in paint, plucking a string, or just pushing pixels around. Even when the final product is more mundane than inspired, proficiency of skill aside, there's an enjoyment just to the creative act, a thrill that it can even be done. Creation, and consequent communication, where others divine what the creator wrought, something in all that is divine indeed.

Posted by: Yudhishthira's Dice at March 25, 2020 09:52 AM (II2Y0) I enjoy the history of names, which is why I try to figure these out. I think that in medieval days, "Van" in Dutch did mean the same as "Von" in German, but the Netherlands was the very first area in Europe to transition into an upwardly mobile economy powered by the middle class, and as this happened the newly wealthy merchant class found ways to give their names much more social cachet than they previously had. Hence, "van" became widely used. Posted by: Tom Servo at March 25, 2020 09:59 AM (V2Yro) Posted by: JEM at March 25, 2020 09:59 AM (8erNz) 189

I used to hike an old abandoned passenger rail line when I lived in NY State. This involved some pretty steep ups and downs along a river bank, and there were staircases to get passengers from the high bank down to the old stations, the stairs descending thirty feet or more with no handrails at all. Steep as hell too. One of the staircases is still there (the rail line was abandoned after a rock slide in the early 30s) and you can walk it.
There are old 19th century photos of the Prince of Wales and other dignitaries on that stairway, no handrails. Nobody thought about putting handrails in until a few decades before the line closed. Always felt cool and historical to walk them, but man, you wanted to watch your step carefully even with the handrails. Posted by: Guy Smiley at March 25, 2020 10:00 AM (KxVoZ) 194

Instantly recognized it as a Van Gogh, but that led to so many questions - If Van Gogh wasn't Van Gogh, would anyone like this stuff? Does Van Gogh get a lot of credit because he was an original who inspired others? Or, conversely, are there so many subsequent copycats who've improved on the technique that we're overly harsh to Van Gogh, the innovator? (The same questions could be asked of early rap, punk, even comedy people) Posted by: Ted K. at March 25, 2020 09:53 AM (xPYsj) Van Gogh was a loser and failure while he was alive, who was in and out of mental hospitals during his last decade of life. He was completely supported by his brother, the art dealer. It wasn't until after his death that his art was valued. By that time, Western art was fully committed to the "Modernist revolution". A lot of people mistakenly classify van Gogh as an Impressionist, but he was really a Post-Impressionist. These guys really challenged the ideas of what art really was and changed the rules. They would inspire Matisse and Picasso, the twin pillars of early 20th century Modernism. Posted by: Kris at March 25, 2020 10:04 AM (VQp/A) 215

Watched a couple split up and each head for a separate self-check out at Krogers so they could each get the maximum of one multi- pack of TP each. The "spotter" they have enforcing the limits cold-busted them and tried to stop it, but when the manager was summoned, he quickly caved to their "but we're special" shit. Here is the thing on Fauci - he is an expert in his field - and his concern is his field. He readily admits that.
A long time ago I worked on a project with a bunch (about 30) of nuclear physicists and literal rocket scientists. I was none of those, I was just an engineer with product knowledge. They were really VERY smart. But they could not get a thing done. Because they were all hyperfocused on their specialty. It took me as a generalist who was 25 years their junior to get them moving forward. To listen to the metallurgist who kept insisting you need to make sure about X. To listen to the rocket scientist that said you need to be very careful about Y. And the physicist that insisted Z was most important. Got it. Still had to complete the project. People who have never actually worked with "experts" think that experts ought to be in charge. No. Just no. People used to being in charge should be in charge. At the Robert Bateman exhibit I mentioned, you could get within inches of the canvas. Bateman works (or did at the time) with thinned out layers of oil paints, not a hint of impasto. Up close the painting was thin and flat. Absolutely unremarkable. Step back a few feet or more and the same painting has the look of romanticized realism.

>>>The difference in rendering accurate colors across multiple sites is startling with this work. Which do you like? ============ The version you used. The other version has washed out sky on my monitor, even if the building contrasts are perhaps a bit better than here. It always amazes me the controversy van Gogh provokes among art scholars. So many criticize his impressionism and imprecision, but I always sense a resentment of his success underlies the complaints. Oh well, at least they know all his success came to Theo and his family, after Vincent's death, and not to van Gogh himself. But they would always listen to the experienced machinists and engineers and their designs would get done. (I'm sure that wasn't always the case, but the place was very old by the time I got there)

Just as an example MD's cases have been accelerating despite precautions. This is in part due to lack of testing early on, but it's also because there's a lead time to displaying symptoms and also because PG county and Monky county are full of rich DC urbanites.
We went up 74 cases today or so. My numbers for the last few days are +19% +20% +21% So it's not terrible in terms of absolute percentages, but the absolute number is going up still. Maybe deaths isn't the right metric to focus on. At least not right now. I don't remember sending hospital ships to NYC and LA nor turning the Javits Centers into a makeshift hospital during the last H1N1 outbreak. I also don't remember GM and Ford repurposing their factories to make ventilators. Even if people don't die we seem to need a lot more inpatient equipment and supplies including doctors and nurses than I can remember for any kind of outbreak. Maybe it's an overreaction but it doesn't seem that way so far. And I think we all agree Trump is not stupid and he's not likely to get played by the media or the left and he seems to think this is a real health crisis. So what is their plan? It may not make sense, but
they have a plan of some kind. I wonder what it is. I sort of suspect that it might be something like "hold out until they scream and we get what we want at all costs" but that is stupid. They might get what they want in the short term at the cost of becoming a provincial party for the next couple of generations. Or what they want is so much more devastating than we know, and so if they get it then their near-guaranteed electoral rout is irrelevant. This is of course all speculation, though. I am just flummoxed by what the hell they're trying to do. Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at March 25, 2020 10:48 AM (e/H31) That's what they were doing (hold out and scream until they get want they want), and they miscalculated badly. But there is an agreed-upon bill now and it is expected the Senate will vote on it sometime today. Because the House had a pro forma (come in, bang the gavel, leave) session at 10 a.m., they will not be back until 11 a.m. tomorrow. That will be its first chance to pass the Senate's bill provided the Senate does so before then. Whatever Nancy says about "Oh, we're going to examine this carefully so no guarantees we'll pass it" is just bluster. They'd like to do it by voice vote so no one needs to fly or drive back for a roll call vote. Posted by: Vendette at March 25, 2020 10:53 AM (nRNOc) 473

No. Just no. People used to being in charge should be in charge - - - Yup. Also, they probably prefer the pursuit of inquiry vs. getting stuff done (a hard endpoint). I haven't worked with scientists, but in software, and there are some people that love to noodle tough challenges, discuss possibilities and options. You need a project manager who says: here's the schedule, here's your list of deliverables, and then hold them to it. And when things start creeping out of scope, they slap 'em back on task. It's not about possibilities and potential for a huge solution, it's about results. Posted by: Lizzy at March 25, 2020 10:56 AM (bDqIh) 491

I've seen this one in the Denver museum. Billy Schenk's "When Destiny Meets Oblivion."
https://denverartmuseum.org/object/2005.150 I sure miss the southwest. In our four years in Denver, we toured all over CO, WY, UT, NM, AZ, and CA, together by car and me solo by motorcycle. Right at this time of year, having done the requisite visit to the Navaho trading post at the four corners and overnighting in Cortez, we headed north out of Durango and in bright blue sunshine, were practically the only car on the 550 going over the passes, down into the hole at Silverton, and up through Ouray. Thence along the Gunnison over to the Monarch pass. I miss it all. Posted by: Les Kinetic at March 25, 2020 11:03 AM (+fPHo) 530

Did the Senate already pass the bill, or are they
doing so today? If they already passed it, I am back to "confused" by the House actions. If its passage is pending and the House *can't* vote on it yet, then it is makes a bit of sense so they can squeeze another news cycle out of it. Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at March 25, 2020 10:59 AM (e/H31) The agreement was reached on a final bill around midnight. Senate comes in at noon and it is expected they will pass it today, so you are correct that the House can't vote on it yet. Reminder, though, that the Senate GOP took flak a few weeks ago for not passing a House bill dealing with this but instead adjourning for the weekend. Well, the House passed it early Saturday morning (the 14th) and then sat on it. The Senate didn't get it until Tuesday, the 17th. Posted by: Vendette at March 25, 2020 11:03 AM (nRNOc) 533

Interesting thing I always wonder about with Van Gogh paintings is how they were affected by his syphilis-- (its argued about, I know, I know) -- specifically, Argyll Robertson pupils, aka, "Prostitute's Pupils" --they are "accommodating but unreactive"-- they adjust for distance but not for light changes--
Thus, light in his paintings will take on a greater intensity/contrast, reflecting his perception of things. Don't think Van Gogh ever fully descended into neurosyphilis like Guy de Maupassant, but it could be definitely argued that the diseased brothels of Paris have played a rather outsized yet purposely ignored role in western culture. It could be further argued that penicillin has contributed to a general downturn in western arts as well... artists living far past their prime and inspired by drugs and naval gazing rather than dying in their 30s, inspired by terror of their own mortality and delusional parasitosis. The one you display on the main page is the best and most accurate. Actual Van Gogh paintings look different from a 2D representation because they are often tube and pallet knife and have physical depth and texture. Tubes of oil paint were a relatively new innovation at the time.
Vincent was able to pioneer this kind of oddly fresco-like painting because his brother Theo worked in the art industry and supplied Vincent with all the paints he could possibly use for free. This is one of the reasons Paul Gauguin was anxious to go stay with, and watch over, Vincent in Arles. Theo was to basically support them both. Didn't work out.
