Not All Heroes Wear Capes

Legends.

And then there's this little femcel.

A friend asks, stunned: "Is this what 'journalists' actually think they're doing? Fighting coronavirus?"

Is that what they think they're doing when they ask the 100th question about whether calling a Chinese virus the Chinese virus is racist? Do they think those questions are synthesizing a vaccine?

I would actually imagine the answers are "yes:" The press corps actually does believe that if they cover the law, they're lawyers. If they cover technology, they're engineers. And if they cover an epidemic, they're front-line medical personnel with notebooks and pocket audio records.

They really are that delusional.

72 The media's self-importance seldom has anything to do with their behavior. Remember "you're stuck on stupid!"? A hurricane is bearing down on the Gulf Coast and Katrina is fresh in everyone's minds and the National Guard General in charge has a press conference in order to inform everyone about what they are supposed to do to prepare and when it hits.

What did reporters ask about? It wasn't that.

When we've got an array of politicians running for office, do the media ask questions to help to inform people so that they can best pick the person they actually like the most? No. Because that doesn't make a good story.

Young, dumb, uber-opinionated and incredibly misguided on what their role is.

And it was much, much, much better back then. I mean the obvious overall intellectual level, and common sense, and humility. There were exceptions - enough that there were people/publications you could read for actual news and actual reasonable context, etc.

And there are still reasonably good actual reporters, though not many. However - the editorial level, the superstructure, the institutions - are just about uniformly and thoroughly collapsed. Just dumb silly tendentious airheads who are shallow political hacks. So much of the good content dies before it gets into print.

You can still do it even if you're an idiot by asking things like, "What is a question about this topic that should be asked that you haven't been asked?" and stuff like that.

The problem with the media now is that it's not about reporting it's about constructing the rayciss/homophobe/sexism narratives. Saw it all the time back in the 2015-2016 when they tried to cover Trump rallies. Within the first paragraph they'd bring up the rayciss/homophobic/sexism stuff. They simply can't report on anything outside of it because to them that is the way the world is constructed and everything must either fit into it or outside of it but it always relates to it.

Posted by: pep at March 19, 2020 05:04 PM (T6t7i)

249 Dack, you're right.

And a related thing.

Press conferences, most anyway, have long (always?) been kind of "ugly", in the sense that there'd usually be stupid questions, unreasonably hostile questions, etc. Most people have rarely if ever watched them, so they can be shocked. But it's kind of the price of doing business with a free press, and it's often been that way, long before Trump.

But clearly the balance has tipped to where the idiotic badgering has swamped the reasonable give-and-take. Though the last 2-3 days WH events are (thankfully) not good examples, the fact that the WH discontinued the decades-old practice of holding them illustrates how bad it had become.

Just giving little speeches, rife with myths and distortions and tendentious assertions, capped by a throwaway "question".

So there's always been some ugliness that will shock the uninitiated. Now, however, there's much more, it's at a dumber level, AND the news organizations fed by these events have, for the most part, become dim propaganda operations.

In that MSDumbAndDumber clip, I think it is that fat slob on the right that was being interviewed via skype this morning on a Canadian channel (ctv news - he was supposedly from Politico iirc), and he was trashing Trump, after a nice lead-in from the b*tch liberal host.

The commie hatred for anything Texas is
irrationally epic. You have to have lived in a commie area for awhile to
truly realize it.

I used to wear my Texas Rangers MLB ballcap to the farmer's market
in SoCal and enjoy the sputtering from the hippies, who wanted to rant
about Texas, but didn't want to be seen getting agitated about a sports
team, because that would be uncouth.

Coming from Massachusetts a long time ago, I had one, very well educated friend ask where I was going to go to the hospital in Texas if something happened to me. I had to hold my tongue, this was, by the way, long after the first heart transplant surgery took place IN HOUSTON. Sure Boston has awesome hospitals, my son is probably alive today because they do have awesome care.

BUT that doesn't mean there's no friggin hospitals in Texas!

Instead I joked that they'd probably sling me into the back of the buckboard and drive me to the usually drunk mule doctor that lived about the local stable and I moved on. But I ain't never forgotten the arrogance and ignorance.

No, but if you *owe* after filing, you'll have an extra 90 days to pay. This is the one major policy change that is going to help me directly.

At slightly more than 1,400 acres, Houston's Texas Medical Center is the largest medical center in the world.

And Texas A&M University has started construction on three new towers there, to support it's new Bio-Medical Mechanical Engineering Program.

Want that new Respiratory Ventilator that's also half Star Trek Tricorder? They'll be developing all kinds of advanced gear, such.

I want to go all Clockwork Orange on these guys. They've destroyed people's ability to make a living as well as taking out their life savings in some cases. They need to be made an example of.

I'm really, really lucky. I just sold a townhouse for above asking. Escrow closed 1 week ago. I'm totally liquid. At the exact moment my work dried up for the foreseeable future. So, I'll be able to continue paying for my mother's nursing home, her medical bills, and still have a roof over my head and have groceries. If this had happened 2 months ago I'd be in a huge heap of hurt.

My heart aches for those who aren't so fortunate, and there's far too many. All of this could have been preventable, but the media hates the orange man too much. By any means necessary.

400 RE comment Jewles at 215. Valley Fever is a fungal infection, usually of the lungs/respiratory system. Typically found in dry, dusty areas ( think Phoenix). The spores propagate, causing fatigue, shortness of breath, and in some cases voids or other areas of damage to the lungs. Dogs can get it, too. From what I remember of my mothers infection, it is hard to get rid of, and the drug to treat it is expensive. jasonj, Tucson
