Is It Time to #CancelChina?

The American Interest:

Amidst the 24/7 breathless media coverage and calls for politicians to "do something," one fundamental question still needs to be addressed forthrightly and in the open: Who did this to us and what to do to prevent it from happening again?

The question about assigning agency and blame is pretty straightforward to answer: The communist Chinese state, which for more than three decades has been draining capital and knowledge from the West, benefiting from our greed and myopia, has just let loose a virus that in the coming months is about to effectively paralyze Europe and the United States and bring severe pain, both human and economic on the world....

As a result of all this, the West is now shutting down, at least for a while. The ultimate cost to the world, in terms of new government debt, failed businesses, and human lives and suffering, is difficult to quantify at this point. But there are indications that the fallout from the Wuhan Virus could be transformative.

We must acknowledge our own complicity in what is now unfolding. The belief that globalization, through the radical centralization of market networks, was the unavoidable path forward has been exposed as a grave, near-delusional miscalculation. The offshoring by corporations of supply chains to China has not only eviscerated communities that were previously reliant on manufacturing jobs, but has also brought with it an unprecedented level of vulnerability and fragility to our economies. The populist revolts that have wracked Western democracies for the past several years are in part rooted in the pain that these dislocations have caused. Worse yet, for the past three decades, this offshoring process has favored an adversary that is determined to replace us as the hub of global economic and military power and place itself at the new normative center of the world.

Bonchie at RedState notes that some former Free Trade Above All Else corporate pseudoconservatives are rethinking the terrible deal we made to ship most of our manufacturing base to a hostile communist power.

Which turns out to be the cradle of apocalyptic plagues, to boot.

We cannot continue to pretend that free trade with China has no consequences, as has been the typical fall back on the right. Perhaps we are reaching an inflection point, though? I’m seeing more and more conservatives who originally scoffed at taking on China economically softening to the idea of getting tough with the Communists.

The truth is, claims that the trade war "only hurts the U.S." have always been completely false. Yes, trade wars have financial costs for both sides, but there’s no doubt China has taken the brunt of the damage so far. The inability to admit that has been a frustrating point of contention in discussions on the matter because it supposes that we simply punt on the leverage we’ve gained.

Things have escalated though, with the questions of how to proceed no longer just centering around China going after the NBA last year, which is where you started to see some breaks in the conventional wisdom form. We face a world-wide pandemic of Wuhan coronavirus due to the lying and incompetence of the Chinese, a country that we’ve wrapped so much of our well being into with little care for the long term consequences.

China-skeptical conservatives, despite being previously berated by many on their own side, were right all along.

Buh buh buh you can get dog food fifty cents cheaper! (Even thought it might contain hazardous chemicals.)

Buh buh buh I can buy a yard umbrella at WalMart for $30 less than I used to pay! (Even though we had to wipe out our domestic furniture production for that savings.)

The people primarily enriched by the China trade turn out to be, surprisingly enough, the corporate interests paying the salaries of the China Lobby.

Time to cancel these Corporate Welfare Dependents, too.

40 I'd love to see our relationship with China change as a result of this, but I doubt it will. Our political class has been in love with China for a long, long time - ever since they were advocating that most-favored-nation trade status would be the way to defeat communism. Which was what? The early 90s? And that's had a corrupting influence throughout American society. Hollyweird is devoted to not offending the Chinese. As is the NBA. Lots of universities have foreign-student income to protect. Lots and lots of influential companies and organizations are carrying water for the Chinese at this point.

47 My dad was in Academia at the tail end of his career. His school wanted to open a satellite location in China which would house a business program.

In negotiations, the Chinese side wanted to buy one book, one time for each course, pay one teacher's salary for one course period, and own all intellectual property rights of every course after it was taught once.

After that, they would print copies of that book, paying zero money to the University, all proceeds went to them. They would install their own teacher. They would teach the course, again, with zero proceeds going to the University.

The University was seriously considering this ridiculous offer, because they wanted their Satellite in China so they could feel really International and shit.

61 A few steps:

1) Cut the number of Chinese students studying in American universities by 95%.

2) Ban admission to the United States for Chinese Communist Party members and their families, except for official business.

3) Enforce the Foreign Agents Registration Act. People and organizations receiving money from the Chinese government (directly or indirectly) to espouse Chinese positions have to register as foreign agents. This includes the New York Times and Washington Post, who regularly take money from the Chinese government to run special advertising sections.

If the US despises China as much as I think it will by the end, those properties will be expropriated without compensation. Any American corporations with gear left in China will write them off as a loss. Given how badly America's very mild economic warfare affected their country, sanctions would absolutely destroy them. And any country that continued to trade with China would find themselves facing equal American hostility, as well as outraged citizens fearing a new bat plague.

155 We've looked the other way far too long on the Chinese. This could have been stopped right at the door by seeing communism for the evil it is. It could have at least been mitigated or questioned as we watched the Chinese march across places like Tibet, steal our jobs, industries and intellectual property. It could have been paused for reflection as they militarily built up the South China and illegally laid claim to lands they did not own or tried to intimidate people from navigating seas outside their legal boundaries. How about even a momentary pause of reflection for an absolute lack of civil rights, forced prison labor, extra judicial murder, forced abortion, organ harvesting and concentration camps for the Uighurs. No, they told us. Capitalism will win the day.

Right, Joe Biden?

I can certainly see trade-embargoing them like Cuba until they bring the perps publicly to justice or turn them over to us for trial.
However much they roar, China needs us more than we need them. And they're not in a position to hurt us militarily unless we do something really stupid like invade their homeland.

I suspect that Taiwan is like Japan in that they can spin up some nukes VERY quickly.

All we need to do is change the One China policy, and recognize Taiwan as a sovereign country. We can even specify that we don't recognize any claims by the Kuomintang to mainland China, that they'll have to settle for Taiwan alone.

Either way, the ChiComs will lose their shit.

246 Consumers get cheaper goods so can buy more with their paychecks.

Unfortunately they pay higher taxes because all the unemployed workers need welfare now. And unemployment means a lot of young men turning to crime either from desperation or boredom, which means more money spent on police, and more authoritarian law enforcement. Oh, and your paychecks are smaller because you're competing against more workers who will do your job cheaper. And the cheap goods you buy aren't any better quality, and in fact may be worse.

But other than that globalization has been great for American consumers.

The average monthly wage in Colombia is close to $600. There are 450 million people in South America. Let's move what we can to the US and move the rest to Central and South America

If you can be middle wage in Colombia, Brazil, Nicaragua etc you probably won't need to come illegally to the US.

I expect when the "new case" # declines for 2 or 3 days in a row, we'll
see at least a partial all-clear and modification or ending of several
restrictions. Assuming the level of hospitalized has not caused a real
crisis, and no other factors are red. We'll see. Won't be surprised if
it's soon.

The closings and restrictions have a specific date where they will be revisited.

So this isn't open-ended as some claim.

In Michigan, it's the first week of April. By then, we will have had two weeks of tracking to see where things are.

If the cases are stable or falling, than it will have worked, the spread will have been checked, and we'll be able to lift the restrictions.

Conversely, if it keeps jumping up, the measures will likely have to be tightened or abandoned. It will depend.

I do find it weird that Michigan's restrictions haven't been in place for a week and people are expecting Road Warrior societal collapse.

Like I said, all I have to go on is the CDC numbers from things like H1N1 and seasonal flu. For those viruses, the average daily cases was 160,000+.

We only have 220,000 cases total for this COVID-19.

Yet, we went from normal to shut down the country within about a week. Over 220,000 total worldwide cases.

If our system could handle an average of 160,000 cases per day of H1N1 and seasonal flu, why in the world are we so freaked out about a few thousand cases of COVID-19?

The new study could provide insight into why Italy's death rate, at about 8% of total infected people, is higher than in other countries.

The Rome-based institute has examined medical records of about 18% of the country's coronavirus fatalities, finding that just three victims, or 0.8% of the total, had no previous pathology. Almost half of the victims suffered from at least three prior illnesses and about a fourth had either one or two previous conditions.

More than 75% had high blood pressure, about 35% had diabetes and a third suffered from heart disease.

378 Say, weren't we planning on shipping more and more agricultural products to China?
Wasn't that supposed to "save" the domestic agriculture sector?
How exactly is that going to work out in this new paradigm of "isolating" China?
I had mused just after the deal was signed to end the trade war that perhaps it might not be such a good idea to invest so much in selling to a "hostile" country like China as a base support for such a critical sector of our economy but was scoffed at in certain quarters. Now I have to wonder just how prophetic I was.

Meanwhile, for more direct measures, I suggest "suspending" debt payment on any government securities currently held by China.
Why send them money only to insist they send it back as compensation for unleashing the plague on us only for them to laugh in our faces?
Much the same as I suggest that rather then sending tax money to everyone during the economic shutdown, the government simply cut and suspend tax (and other fee) collection, cutting out the middle man in letting people have more money in their pocket. Even cutting more indirect fees, like all those phone, television, and internet taxes and fees, not to mention gas taxes, and various sin taxes, will go a long way to reducing both everyday costs on people, and long-term corporate compliance expenses.

The problem with a pandemic is that if you wait too long to figure out if it's "for real" you've already lost.

We could. Who owns what it well know and tracked. However, the downside is that would be a big event. The US has always, always, redeemed its debt and paid in full. By repudiating it, even selectively, that would cause ramifications. Hey, they actual defaulted on a trillion.

Now, if it's time to go nuclear, then we go nuclear. Repudiating debt would be the nuclear option.

What about the total price, including human economic displacement here and in Europe? And if it is anywhere near what we think, shouldn't the Kochs and Ryans and the Pelosis and The Economist/Atlantic crew be liquidated to pick up the tab?

Some of us bitched three decades about all this, mind you, and were shoved into corners. The ones with real gripes are the steelworkers in Pennsylvania and auto workers in Michigan and manufacturers in upstate New York who were reduced to financial rubble, watched their children work for slave wages and become addicts or otherwise wounded, and now have seen their temporarily prosperous grandchildren returned to poverty.

That means that this thing was floating around for months before any travel restrictions or any "social distancing" were implemented. And if spreads this fast even with the things we're doing now then why would believe that it wasn't spreading even faster back then?

It didn't start spreading in America when we discovered it here, that's childlike thinking. I assume that millions of Americans already have or have gotten over the virus months ago.

How do we know? How many people in Italy typically die of seasonal flu per year? How many died of H1N1?

Didn't 2,000 people die in France one summer because of an unusually high temperature summer?

We can't look at the numbers in a vacuum. Just like Sharyl Atkinson's research showing that pretty much all the 100+ deaths in the USA have been to the elderly and those with health conditions.

Recall H1N1 where a national emergency was not declared then until 4 months after WHO declared it a pandemic.

There were 22 million cases in the USA between April and Oct of 2009. 22 million. In 6 months. And we didn't shut down.

I am just baffled by what number someone saw that said we needed to shut down the country a few days after the WHO declared a pandemic.

This does not add up.

The only reason jobs were moved to China was that the regulatory environment in this country made it economically viable.

People can talk all they want about cheap labor, but, it still takes quite a bit of time and investment capital for a new factory to be brought online.

And, of course, our government wasn't smart enough, or didn't care enough, to wonder if wholesale shipping of our entire manufacturing sector to a communist country was a good idea.

Oh, and I'd like to know what fool thought it was a good idea to have China make all of our pharmaceuticals.

It is not a strain of influenza.

This is known. If it was it would be right there in the name.

It is closer to a "cold" which means it can mutate more rapidly. You know how long we've been trying to cure the common cold?

So we are not dealing with a 'flu strain, but rather a *lethal common cold*.

436 "432 8-year tax holiday, no red tape, suspension of all EPA, OSHA, etc. regulations.

We have got to mobilize like we did in World War 2. It is THAT crucial.

Also gives us the opportunity to dissolve the bureaucracy, perhaps permanently.

Your child-like trust in your government amuses me.`

Any tax abatement, regulation removal, red-tape cutting, bureaucracy neutering or economic policy that would benefit a revival is as sure and dependable as the next election.

When the Communists return to full power in the Executive, they will forever destroy any mechanism that promotes wealth, prosperity and happiness."

If the next Democrat president does that, the government will be toppled. Bank it.

439 And all I see here is that the media is attacking
Trump on not doing enough, not taking this seriously enough, my governor
Whitmer accusing Trump of not acting soon enough, etc.

Posted by: Clyde Shelton, a law abiding citizen at March 18, 2020 08:55 PM (Do5/p)

Whitmer's in over her head. Every move she made was forced on her.

She closed the schools only after the universities went to online classes AND parents were pulling their kids out in such numbers that they would have to shut down anyway.

She shut down bars because other states were doing it and they had confirmed cases transmitted through a Burger King and movie theater.

If she'd been pro-active she'd have done it all at once, so she blames Trump because that's why she got elected - on an anti-Trump mid-term wave.

This too shall pass, though. We haven't even gone a week yet. The panic buying will stop, people will adjust and things will calm down.

440 >>>"It is much worse than the common cold, but, yes, everything else you wrote. "

I'm willing to go along with this as long as it's compared to a "common cold".

However in terms of infection rates and death, according to the CDC we aren't even close to FLU numbers yet. Apparently we should get a better idea how this disease is progressing in about another week or so.

I assume that's a rhetorical question. This has been about getting rid of Trump by the Progda Enemedia from Day One.

This is more than a manufactured crisis -- this is manufactured hysterical insanity. But I think you already know that ...

444 If the next Democrat president does that, the government will be toppled. Bank it.

Right Now. This very instant.

Your government in league with the Enemedia has terrified the population, destroyed trillions of dollars of wealth, jacked the unemployment rate up over 20%, is on a path to wipe out entire industries that they don't end up nationalizing, has you locked up in your own home, denies churches from assembling, closes clubs, gyms, bars, family reunions and is now going to Zimbabwe the money and most likely let the Federal Reserve own the means of production by changing the rules and allowing them to print funny money and buy equities for pennies on the dollar.

There are trillions of rounds of ammo, hundreds of millions of guns, and not a single one of either has been mustered to stop this most obvious and outrageous Cloward & Piven coup d' gras to the Republic, the Constitution and the Free Market.

That wasn't a hack. Some bright spark decided it would be cheaper to outsource management of the systems. A chinese national, living in China, happened to be one of the contractors. How much data he extracted and turned over to his government we'll never know, but "All of it" is a safe bet.

Yeah, whatever. Google, Facebook, Apple, Microsoft, et al had that information and more for years.

The real crime was not the ability to extract personal information, but to insert legends of agents and spies by inventing clearances, scholastic records, resumes and histories that would guarantee employment anywhere.

True. Without the head counts, they won't get that Federal money. That is the only reason they care about attendance.
