Hollywood Scrambles As It Loses Millions (Billions?) to Coronavirus, and I Just Can't Stop Laughing

Second look at social distancing?

With theaters closing, Universal will make its movies available on-demand on the same time they're (theoretically) available to be seen in theaters.

People have been predicting the death of the physical movie theater -- except for huge events movies where IMAX, 3D, and other format gimmicks are a selling point -- for a long time now.

Universal is now releasing movies on-demand while they're in theaters in reaction to coronavirus. If some of these dogs wind up making money on-demand, this might be an eariler-than-expected death knell for theatrical exhibition.

Universal Pictures will make new films available to stream the same day they’re released in theaters as the coronavirus pandemic shuts cinemas around the world.

In a stopgap move that analysts said would likely be duplicated soon by other big Hollywood studios, Universal’s new releases will be available for at-home and theatrical viewing on the same day starting with the April 10 release of the animated feature "Trolls World Tour," parent company NBCUniversal said.

Universal films already released in theaters -- such as the horror flick "The Invisible Man" and the satirical thriller "The Hunt" -- will be available for digital rentals as soon as Friday, according to a news release.

Disney/Marvel had been hoping to not have to delay Black Widow's release -- but they just pulled the trigger.

It was supposed to be released either April 24 or May 1 (different sites say different dates), so that's still a fair bit in the future.

But it's now delayed. They don't say when it will be released.

Disney's "Black Widow" is the latest tentpole to shift its release date because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The Marvel superhero adventure, starring Scarlett Johansson, was slated to hit theaters on May 1...

Disney has already delayed "Mulan," "The New Mutants" and "Antlers," but held off on postponing "Black Widow" in the hopes that it wouldn’t have to scrap another big film. But the move was inevitable since movie theaters in multiple states, including New York, New Jersey, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Washington, have been ordered to close. Only AMC Theatres has given a timeline on how long its locations might be closed, estimating six to 12 weeks for venues nationwide.

Disney's other big money-maker is its parks. It's shutting down all of its hotels and parks.

After shutting down Disneyland, Disney World, Disneyland Paris, and Disney Cruise Line operations last week, Disney (NYSEIS) announced on Monday it would make additional closures. The entertainment giant will cease all store operations in North America on Tuesday, and all of the company's Disney World hotels are set to close Friday.

If I'm remembering right -- they already shut down Disney Tokyo, Disney Hong Kong (they had one in Hong Kong?) and Disney Shanghai (or was it Beijing).

That's a lot of cheddar.

Disney long ago has changed its business model from "family friendly entertainment" to "courting #Woke childless weirdos who retain a dubious interest in child-oriented entertainment." They've kissed off the "normies" and try to appeal to the Woke and sexually obnoxious.

But as Comics Matter says: SJWs are not only not customers, they're anti-customers. Not only will they not spend money on the #Woke entertainment they claim they'd pay for if only someone would make it, but they will actively chase away all paying customers.

They're doing that now. It's hard to imagine "Mulan" not being #Woke enough to appease the SJWs, but that's exactly what the SJWs are saying.

While the release of Disney's live-action remake of "Mulan" has been postponed indefinitely due to the coronavirus pandemic, the film has already received criticism from Asian Americans who feel the crew doesn’t feature sufficient Chinese representation, according to NBC News.

Many Asian Americans on social media criticized the lack of representation behind the camera -- noting the director, the screenwriters and the costume designer were not of Chinese descent -- during the Hollywood premiere this week, days before the studio announced it would be moving the film’s debut. One social media user wrote "you cannot just plop Asian actors in front of a camera & call it a day!"

"There needs to be Chinese people...," the Twitter user added.

A movie about a Chinese girl who goes Tranny to pretend to be a boy to fight in an army -- Not woke enough!, it turns out.

I didn't mention Bob Iger's resignation as CEO of Disney, because I didn't imagine it was done due to Disney performing poorly. Everyone knows Star Wars sucks and Marvel is on the slide, and Disney's parks bombed with "Galaxy's Edge," but Disney is still making a billion dollars a movie, even when they're terrible.

And to shareholders, that's what matters.

So I didn't think this was some kind of disguised firing or anything.

But Gary from Nerdrotic has been suggesting now that Bob Iger got out because he knew a ton of bad news was on the way for Disney and he didn't want to be there for the downturn. Disney's share price had been selling at $150 for a long time, and now it's fallen to $92.

Is that true? I don't know. Seems plausible, but who knows.

Also, check out the sneering dismissal Disney offered shareholders who complained of ABC's obvious anti-conservative animus.

The new CEO Bob Chapik gave George Stephanopolis glowing praise for his objectivity:

But, ah, I think ABC News has a stellar track record of being objective in reporting the news and it'll continue in the future.

I think you can S my D, Bob.

Now with all of this bad news on the entertainment front, is there any good news?

Indeed there is. People love the woke Star Trek: Discovery so much that they're threatening to make an STD movie.

Studio bosses clearly have a lot of faith in Star Trek: Discovery. Season 3 hasn't even aired yet, but earlier this month it was reported that it's already been renewed for a fifth season. The show deserves credit for ushering in a new golden age of Trek on TV, too, with both Short Treks and Star Trek: Picard following it on the CBS All Access service. And the next journey of the U.S.S. Discovery could even see it go boldly into a whole new medium.

According to our sources -- the same ones who said Transformers is being rebooted and National Treasure 3 is in development, both of which turned out to be correct -- Paramount and CBS are developing a Discovery movie. The film would bring back the cast of the show, led by Sonequa Martin-Green as Michael Burnham, and could even see them crossing over with the stars of the rebooted series from J.J. Abrams. The current idea is that the Discovery would end up in the Kelvin timeline where they’ll meet the Enterprise crew from Abrams' films.

Okay, so that's of course almost certainly complete bullshit.

"We Got This Covered" -- well, I read them some time, but I don't believe all of these rumors.

But even if the rumor is a rumor -- it could very well be a lie. One thing that these people do when they know they're in big, big trouble is put out word that their next project has supposedly been greenlit, that the studio has such confidence in the current movie that they're already planning the sequel.

Paramount knew that Star Trek Beyond was going to disappoint badly at the box office, which is exactly why they floated rumors for Star Trek IV-- with Kirk meeting his father, Chris "Thor" Hemsworth -- a week before Star Trek Beyond debuted in theaters.

Spoiler: there is no Star Trek IV. They can't interest investors in putting their money into it, and Chris Pines and Chris Hemsworth have already walked.

Kathleen Kennedy at Lucasfilm was fond of announcing this new project and that new series even while her actual movies were disappointing -- or outright bombing, in the case of Solo --at the box office.

Remember that supposed trilogy Rian Johnson would be directing? Remember the trilogy that Dan Weiss and David Benihoff of Game of Thrones infamy would be producing?

Remember the Obi Wan series? How about the Boba Fett movie?

Yeah -- none of them are happening.

But Kathleen Kennedy sure did like putting out rumors and leaks about them.

So this is nonsense. Star Trek fans hate Star Trek Discovery and non-Star Trek fans are not enticed to watch it just for the #Woke points.

I take these announcements of "series five" and movies to be signs of weakness, not strength. Franchises in good shape don't have to float rumors about how super-duper they're doing.

The last via Nerdrotic.

Star Trek Discovery movie. As Gary from Nerdrotic says, Please do this. Please do this. It will give us all so much joy to see you lose $300 million.

Nerdrotic is literally laughing out loud as he tries to read this batshit-insane claim about a STD movie.

Oh, one more thing: Remember a few months ago when all of the shill SJW entertainment media couldn't stop talking about HBO's Wokemen, I mean Watchmen?

Then it wasn't renewed for season 2, and the shill SJW media told us that that was just because Damon Lindelhof had too much integrity to sully himself with a sequel to a reboot?

Well... Turns out the show -- get this -- had low ratings.

HBO's Watchmen Wasn't As Popular As You Think

Despite captivating the nerdier parts of the internet, viewing numbers for Watchmen were low compared to other, similarly hyped HBO series.

HBO's Watchmen seemed like a massive hit. Everywhere you looked, there were podcasts and articles breathlessly going through every detail of the show, trying to figure out where the story was going to go, how it connected to the comics and every little detail hidden in the background and backstory. Watchmen had the internet captivated with its every episode, it seemed.

It averaged 759,000 viewers per episode, and I'll bet you it had a lot more viewers for Episode 1 and maybe 2 than the average -- boosting that average based only on initial curiosity.

HBO now rebuts that the show got more people to watch on-demand after the original airings of each episode, but they claim... 8 million total viewers.

8 million total viewers over nine episodes.

That just brings the average up to around 900,000 per episode.

Also, no one talks about ratings this way. We don't total up all viewers for a season and say, "Big Bang Theory had 100 million viewers in its final season." We always talk about the average per episode.

Because the same people keep coming back (and the same people keep not coming back, too).

So yeah, the show that every SJW Twitter douchebag proclaimed was the most important TV event in America since the previous most important TV event in America was, as suspected, almost entirely ignored by normies.

Update: WHAT?

Rumor spreads that Apple wants to buy all of Disney.

Apple has a huge amount of money and doesn't want to pay it out in dividends, so, who knows. They're always looking for a new business to pour their wealth into. They were talking about getting into the car business five years ago!

This is all just a rumor though.

Not enough to post on Reddit, or buy tons of merchandise, or really engage with it on any level but the completely superficial. They enjoy it all the same.

Which works for a regular TV show on basic cable, but is a disaster for something like CBS All Access. If you have only so many people tuning in, either they are hardcore fans who will send you money because they love the show so much, or you are losing money. On Star Trek!

They built all the tension and then basically punted at the end. Didn't the comic end with a fortuitous alien invasion to distract everyone?

So the film version dropped that, and just went with "Gosh, the bad guys win, this story is dumb" ending.

Sort of like The Matrix.

I think that SJW isn't Hollywood's biggest problem. Their big issue is the inability to write a cohesive story about anything, ever.

70 I liked the Watchmen comic, it was a fun read. So, I gave this show a shot, even though I really knew what would happen.

I made it halfway through the third episode, wrote down some guesses about the plot and just could not take any more of it. Jeremy Irons being cast as Ozymandias was the only redeeming quality, and they gave him a poor plot line.

All my guesses were correct too, that show was pretty poorly written and transparently woke.

72 I like Watchmen, the comic and the Zach Snyder movie.
It's a pretty good deconstruction of comic book superheroes and it has some pretty iconic characters too.

Rorschach is an accidental hero of the ages (the author hated the character and the character he was ripping off to make him) and Malin Ackerman as Silk Spectre....yow.

But you have to have something to deconstruct it. And comic books and superheroes are so woke, so deconstructed right now that the Watchmen HBO series couldn't make anything work. It was like building a house out of runny shit.

People are still hungry for real heroes, who endure and sacrifice and do all the things we want to do. I believe that.

DC, Marvel, Disney and HBO do not.

If you don't like it, you don't like it. I won't argue taste.

But the ending of the Watchmen was Ozymandias FAKING an alien invasion and wiping out most of New York City, killing millions of people as a way of unifying humanity.

Only...there's a hitch. Rorschach, a loon but an incorruptible and uncompromising man, had written down that Ozymandias was behind it and gotten his version into the hands of 'alternative press' who would likely run the story. Thus bringing to ruin all that Ozymandias had accomplished.

There is meat there. Watchmen, somehow, is not crap despite being written by Alan Moore.

This is the new well of discontent: representation. There will never be enough "representation." If they made a movie/show with predominantly white cast, then is has to be remade with a black cast, then a latino cast, then an Asian cast, then an LGBTQ cast, then trans, and on and on and on. Oh right, then b#tch about "representation" of the food catering and set designers, and the location being culturally incorrect, and then then the wrong people are profiting off of the [whatever they demanded] production.

Meanwhile, *we* won't be watching because they have lost interest in telling good stories.

I don't think it is just to hurt OMB. I think it is from a much deeper desire. The left needs a crisis like this because it feeds their need for a government leviathan. Trump was moving the country in a self-governing direction, and the country was doing well. Pretty soon people may start to realize that government itself wasn't as necessary. This brings it all back home. These people are sick. Like teenage cutters. They just can't help themselves. Their need for government to be a savior is so strong, they will do anything to make sure others see it too.

I honestly think that's misreading it. I don't think the people who whipped up this furor considered this outcome. I firmly believe that this was just business-as-usual scaremongering, Trump hate and disaster wishcasting that these people have been doing for the past four years.

This time, though, the subject (a pathogen), the volume (cranked up to 11, like always) and things outside of their control (China's behavior/reaction to this) resulted in it getting completely out of control. They got a panic, but they can't control it and its feeding itself now.

Add in to the mix opportunists of all stripes (mayors and governors longing for a crackdown to amplify their control, industrialists eager for public money, traders looking at overvalued shares and waiting to make a move, etc.) and you get a blowout nightmare scenario.

Star Trek Discovery is...horrendously bad. Bad and getting worse. It seems to have only the vaguest notion of what the original series was about and why it was so beloved.

Marvel wokeness - meh. It hasn't bothered me that much. Captain Marvel was terrible, but it seems to be because Brie Larson can't act. And the story line was just sorta stupid. I've actually enjoyed the Black Widow character. Black panther, again, meh. Some good stuff, some bad stuff. mixed bag.

226 Rick and Morty started as a incest/pedo joke Dan Harmon found HILARIOUS:

Morty was supposed to blow Rick at the end of every episode. As part of 'getting out of whatever shit problem' they had gotten into. It was supposed to be the running joke in the show.

Basically they just wanted Marty from Back to the Future to have to blow Doc Brown over and over. That's what Dan Harmon finds funny.

They had to ARGUE Dan Harmon out of doing this blow job running joke.

That's Dan Harmon and that's Rick and Morty.

Anyway, I saw her truck in the driveway and stopped over to say hi. Her sister was packing boxes. She said that my neighbor had decided at 10pm on Sunday to drive to the UP and buy property up there, so she packed whatever would fit in the truck, two dogs, and her ~15 year old daughter and drove six hours away. Not wanting to get a hotel room - they're full of shambling plague-infected wretches, the hotels in the UP - she slept in her truck with her daughter and two dogs until the morning, got a cabin from a rental place, and is presumably going to live up there forever because she is afraid of the martial law and quarantines that are coming to Lansing any minute now. She called her sister to pick up some stuff from the house and I guess she's just leaving it?

She doesn't know anyone in the UP.

It didn't hold up as well into the sequels, but the first one was great. Simple story, clear action, cause and effect. Well executed.

It helps that, if I remember the rumor/story correctly, that the writer created the role and the story specifically for Keanu Reeves to play the titular character - and both of them nailed it.

The rumor is that this is all going to happen in the spiderverse. Which is a bunch of different "Spidermen" from alternate earths. They also intend to make the Garfield Spiderman bisexual. That is the rumor, and it sounds legit.

377 A big part of the decline of movie theaters is the improvements in television.

Not only the technology but the format lets you tell deep stories better and for a few years in the 2000s and 2010s they where putting out a superior product.

That was the main reason I stopped going to movies. The nearest big screen theater to me is 40 miles away in another state.

My TV on the other hand is better then the picture in a small screen theater the food is better and if someone wont shut up during a show I can tell em to go home.

385 But the source material itself sucked.

Posted by: Ace-Endorsed Author A.H. Lloyd at March 17, 2020 05:21 PM (cfSRQ)

Well, you've got this a little screwed up.

The Alien Invasion was a fake created by OZ-Guy, that was supposed to be so terrible in conception, that humans would unite worldwide. and we'd all live happily ever after.

In the comic writer's mind, the good guy did win.

And in the movie as well. ,

Think of Ozzie as a Our Super Elite SJW Better guiding us pig-ignorant deplorables toward a better world despite our horrible natures and instincts.

Rorschach was the bad guy. He was supposed to be a representation of all that was bad and archaic about people.

In the comic/movie, even truth meant less than the narrative to unite mankind, Rorschach recognized that he was a man out of his time and accepted/demanded his own annihilation.

The sting in the tail was supposed to be that Rorschach's diary with the truth of the alien invasion lived on,

and undid all of OZ's good work.

The problem is that reader's saw Rorschach as a hero fighting against terrible odds to get to the truth.

And that flipped the whole "message" that the comic was supposed to convey.

I only saw one episode of the HBO series but it appeared to me that HBO's writer wanted to make damn sure that you damn deplorables really understood what the point of the whole "Watchman" story was. Sort of a leftard recon.

389 So anyone looking to buy Sony has to consider the poison pill that, the moment you buy them, they immediately lose their only big viable franchise.

Posted by: ace at March 17, 2020 05:38 PM (PbpT7)

Not so much a poison pill as its a carveout - when doing the acquisition, the initial price/share would be the market value of Sony (being an entertainment co.) less the Spiderman franchise, and that value would be known by an acquisition player from the start, however - as a condition to close, you would suggest a "lease" of the Spiderman franchise to the acquirer for X years and the pressure would be on to get that done by Sony stockholders. Many previous purchased entities in a company have ROFRs (right of first refusal) that make deals harder, but not impossible.

I've been a huge Disney fan for my entire life, even got to work with some of the original animators/imagineers back in the 90's. Huge collection of original animation artwork.

But, they're dead to me now. At least they're leaving the iconic characters alone (knock on wood). No doubt if they could come to a consensus, Donald would be a tranny.

Whaaaat? Does that cover private schools, too?
I was just calming my kid down yesterday about school being cancelled for the rest of the year -- said that his teachers and private school are motivated to find a way to finish off the semester w/out destroying summer as much as he is. There are options, ways to do this creatively, I am certain of this.

If state officials step in and muck up the innovation/ideas for how to do this -- simply to satisfy teachers unions, I bet -- they are really messing things us. BIGLY. This will not end well.

Hope they don't. Not every movie needs a sequel or prequel. It was a fun story on its own.
Posted by: Lizzy at March 17, 2020 06:04 PM (bDqIh)

This. It is a good movie that has a self contained story, but also leaves you wondering 'Well, what now?'

It is the 'Well, what now?' that is sequel bait, but that is what makes a movie thought provoking (and good for the audience.) People wonder what happened next every time they think of the movie or rewatch it. The thing is, they do not really want a sequel- it will never live up to the hype.

People whined for years about how they wanted prequels, but everyone imagined different things. My own was I wanted a tragedy. A haunted young man, troubled by visions who seems to be bound by fate to become an evil monster but struggles against his destiny.

What I got was fucking stupid, because everyone had a different idea, but Lucas is the one who could make the movie- and he just saw horrible dialogue and toys.

629 This illustrates how the new caste system actually works.

There is one caste and everyone else are untouchables.

Hollywood moguls and producers and doctors were allowed to hang with the Cloud People but they were not the Cloud People. So when it came time to tank the economy since that couldn't be achieved via climate change, the Cloud People took out Hollywood along with the smelly restaurant owners and workers.

Welcome to the Hunger Games, bitches. You just weren't that important. Neither are the political mandarins, who will be next.

Eh, probably. It was kinda confusing to me - I liked the movie.

it was called both. The film bombed at the box office so they attempted a very late re-branding calling it "Live. Die. Repeat," maybe hoping to make people think it was a new movie.

Also, "Edge of Oblivion" is just a terrible title. Sounds like a soap opera about a rehab center.

690 Universal's VOD ploy won't work at $20 per rental. My house gave up the movie theatres a long time ago in favor of the $5 VOD rental fees. Wait a bit longer for VOD release and you don't have to suffer the higher fares and idiots who go to the movies. Plus, you can watch from your nice, comfortable couch and pause/rewind whenever you like.

However, I won't pay $20 for a 48 hour rental. It's not worth it, not when that's usually a "buy" price ('cause we all know buying digital isn't really buying anything when they can revoke it at any time).

719 The more I think about this, the more I think there is going to be a complete reboot of the entire entertainment industry. Hollywood, financially, has been incredibly corrupt for a long time, all of this bullshit about taking $200 million dollars to make a $5 million dollar film. This is the kind of thing that could bring all of that crashing to the ground, just like a Jenga tower.

I broke an arm in last May, and had an early early morning Surgery appointment. Driving to pick up my brother in LA to get me home, some yahoo starts chasing me around in my car with his car and trying to get in during lights.

I call 911 and tell them, and they refused to send a cop to the area since "he might have gone away". She was more upset when I told her I was parked on a median to make the call since I can't drive and call all with one hand.
