The Morning Rant

talking ape.jpg

Being lectured to by aggressively ignorant nitwits is continual source of irritation. How do they ever get media jobs?

For example, look at this crap tweet. She says, quote, Mr. Trump has essentially become a bystander as school superintendents, sports commissioners, college presidents, governors and business owners across the country take it upon themselves to shut down much of American life, unquote. Note that this person gets to write for the New York Times, one of the most prestigious gigs available.

And yet she appears to be completely ignorant of basic civics. I thought they taught this stuff in grade school.

But back up a bit. There are actually a couple of levels of stupid on display here.

The first is the complete ignorance of how our government works. She must've cut class on the day when they explained that in the United States, there are federal, state, and local governments. And each one has its own distinct sphere of responsibility. Now it's true that the idiot progressives have spent the better part of a century blurring the distinctions and creating all sorts of overlap, but nevertheless, the distinction is still meaningful.

So what this twit is observing is precisely how our state and local governments are designed to function. In other words, what she's whining about is a feature, not a bug.

But maybe she knows this but is pretending not to just so she can seize an opportunity to bash Trump. I would much rather believe this than the other possibility, which is that she is aggressively and impregnably ignorant.

But that's the first layer of stupid. There's also a second layer.

The second layer can be seen when you try to figure out how the problem she thinks she sees can be solved. That is, does she really want the federal government shutting down local assemblies and sporting events? Specifically, does she want *Donald Trump* to have the power to shut down local assemblies and sporting events? Because that's what she's asking for.

It's funny: progressives always want the government to have unlimited power, but they just assume that they're the only ones who will always be in charge. They never seem to consider the possibility of what would be happen if their worst enemy was voted into office and was now in charge. You know, kind of like what happened in 2016.

The other day, I was listening to a radio interview of a 60s counter-culture icon and he discussed getting into what he called "heavy left-wing politics" for awhile and then becoming disenchanted when he realized that guys like Abbie Hoffman and Eldridge Cleaver would be in charge and, if that happened, concentration camps would be the immediate result. He actually admitted that. He actually used the phrase "concentration camps" to describe the totalitarianism that the left would establish. He had no love for free market capitalism and limited government but he saw that if his radical pals ran things, it would be way worse.

So, again, do these guys really want Donald Trump micromanaging their lives?

Wednesday's celebs: Last time, we had a couple of Scandi icebacks, Liv Ullman, who is actually Norwegian (I thought she was Swedish), and Max Von Sydow, whose last name indicates he has a German ancestor back aways in his Swedish family tree. They've been in a number of films together, such as Ingmar Bergman's Shame and also The Passion of Anna. However, Mrs. Muse and I are working through a couple of their other films 1971's The Emigrants and The New Land, which came out the following year. Neither of us feel like watching a long movie (both are > 3 hours long), let alone 2 in a row, so we're cutting them up into 45-60 minute chunks and pretending we're watching a 6- or 7-part miniseries.

51 I'm going nuts over the Left's narrative on availability of testing. It's like a d!ck-measuring contest -- "Who's done the most testing?? WE NEED MOAR TESTING!!!!11!!!"

It's like no one has ever heard the phrase "false positive", let alone the fact that disease testing can be of highly variable quality.

Compound that by the fact that appropriate testing strategy is population specific, so all the comparisons to S. Korea make absolutely no sense.

Further compound that by panic-mongers like Drudge who headline the low number of CDC tests without saying that the CDC is not some kind of central hub that administers all tests.

98 Oregon Muse, posted this on the ONT late last night but it bears repeating since the media is doing all it can to destroy Western civilization.

So the final lesson of 1918, a simple one yet one of the most difficult to execute, is that those who occupy positions of authority must lessen the panic that can alienate the members of a society. A society that takes as its motto "every man for himself" is no longer a civilized society.

178 Only reason to test is if someone is sick enough to be in the hospital.
Posted by: notsothoreau

************

Yup.

And that is not done in order to make the decision to admit or to guide therapy, as there is no specific treatment. You don't need to know whether it's coronavirus to treat the symptoms. The main reason to test at that point is to guide isolation decisions.

CDC however has (in the last week or so):

1. Made more test kits available
2. Outsourced actual testing to state and regional labs and health departments
3. Loosened their guidelines for whom to test to include the treating physician's judgement. Also, fever can be either documented or "subjective".

This will likely result in a spike in the apparent number of "confirmed" cases by including asymptomatic and minimally symptomatic cases, which have been there all along, just not tested.

Not everyone can get tested for Coronavirus who wants to be tested!!!!111!!!1

****More unnamed sources MOAR FURIOUS!!!!!****

Okay, so really.

And think about this....

What is the dealio about testing?

Unless you are into a Susceptable Group and are experiencing Severe Symptoms-

the docs are going to do nothing for you but tell you to go home- quarantine yourself and treat it like the flu.

THERE IS NO CURE, A-HOLES!!!!

Your Being tested makes no difference -

unless you have severe symptoms and they want to make sure to treat you if they can properly. Like with antibiotics if you have bacterial pneumonia and not Coronavirus.

Again

TESTING MAKES NO DIFFERENCE IN 95+% of the Cases.

I just hope the American public can see that the Democrats are trying to crashing the economy and ruin Retirees 401Ks for political reasons.

They should be punished severely at the polls.

And the MSM A-holes supporting?starting this panic should be horse-whipped.....uh...figuratively.

This is standard Democratic Procedure pick at something very minor but that tests well when polled.

Then set hair on fire.

Someone explain this to me. Schools are closed now just about everywhere for the next two or three weeks. And now comes the obligatory clamoring for donations to provide "lunch" for all these kids who are 'vulnarable' because they depend on school for breakfast and lunch.

But the schools are turning those same vulnerable kids over to ..who? Parents, grandparents, neighborhood meth dealer? Who during the school year, can't be bothered to feed said kid during the day, yet the kid will be in their care now during the day?

I"ve seen several notices this am already about locations where said kid can pick up a lunch today at noon. How will said kid get there, and if he is being driven or walked by an adult, why in the hell does he need a lunch provided by some benevolent sandwich shop?

As a doctor I saw interviewed said last night: it is the same treatment whether you have Wuhan flu or not; testing does not mean different/better handling. If you need intubation you'll get it, regardless of the test.

Given how contagious it is, and how people are contagious 1+ weeks before any symptoms, being tested when it starts (i.e. before you are ill to the point of needing to be in the hospital) seems silly. Too late to prevent spreading it, and the doctor/hospital will tell you to stay home and treat symptoms (fever, cough) as you would the flu.

Gah, people are stupid.

We never will, but it would be interesting to see the increase in domestic violence and child abuse that occurs during this school shutdown.

The schools are babysitting services. Those kids are going to be annoying for a couple of weeks of bothering the parents at home.

265 I also think that's the difference between East Coast 80's and West Coast 90's. California was very synthwave/new wave while NY/NE was more Bruce Springsteen, Bon Jovi, etc.

But also: Preppy phase in the early 80's!

In the Midwest it was very much both synthwave and rock/hair metal. Which makes it appropriate that the bands that fused those styles were mostly out of the Midwest as well. (Trent Reznor was living in Cleveland when he started doing NIN, and of course Prince, who was never given proper credit as a guitarist, was out of Minneapolis).

And there's a Quinnipiac poll that that came out that says 56% see Joe Biden as a better president and leader in crisis....and it doesn't matter at the end of the day how good the economy is."

So Canada's PM Trudeau's wife tested positive. She just came back from the UK. They have some little kids.

And they are having the same issues with turnaround of the testing as we are having.

Doctors say coronavirus test criteria are inconsistent, could lead to dangerous gaps

Dr. Elia fears this type of situation means cases of COVID-19 are going undetected in Canada. He compared the situation to the U.S., where a lack of testing has led to serious outbreaks in numerous states, including at a long-term-care home in the Seattle area.

"We're not doing any better than they are with testing," Dr. Elia said. "From a testing standpoint, we really have nothing to be gloating about here."

Lucas Castellani, an infectious diseases physician in Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., said he's heard of similar issues cropping up in other areas.

"I'm hearing from colleagues there's these cases that could actually be potentially COVID that we're not testing because of the criteria set by the current recommendations by the Public Health Agency of Canada."

PHAC and Ontario's health ministry did not respond to questions about testing.

Dr. Castellani said an additional problem is that Ontario has been directing health workers to use airborne precautions when treating patients who may have COVID-19. Airborne precautions include the use of special N95 respirator masks and negative pressure rooms, which are typically only available in hospitals, not at family doctors' offices.

318 n the Midwest it was very much both synthwave and
rock/hair metal. Which makes it appropriate that the bands that fused
those styles were mostly out of the Midwest as well. (Trent Reznor was
living in Cleveland when he started doing NIN, and of course Prince, who
was never given proper credit as a guitarist, was out of Minneapolis).

Preppy wasn't just the early 80s, although it was definitely most noticable then.

I grew up in the 1980s and the two times I have heard of Synthwave in my life were today on this blog. That is a cool thing about generation, decades et al. They are different to different people. It is like when libs talk about the 1960s. Yeah, that as THEIR experience, but some others had a very different experience. And to be straight up. same with people who describe Vietnam. Some had one experience, and others had a very different one.

The media pretty much gets to decide which experience was the standard.

Isolating perfectly healthy adults can be more harmful than getting the flu. I think depression and not seeing a health professional because youthink kyou are going to get something at the doctor's office is more harmful than the possibility you might get exposed to the virus.

The article also claimed that China could impose pharmaceutical export controls which would plunge America into "the mighty sea of coronavirus."

404 I actually am kind of assed off about the testing screw up, and it is a screw up. They sent out bad test kits at the beginning, and it has taken them precious time to fix that. The reason is, when someone shows symptoms, you can test everyone they've come in contact with before they are symptomatic, and maybe get them quarantined before they can further spread the disease.

Now, the media will tell you the bad test kits and the delay were the fault of #OrangeManBad, which is bullshit. That was the career people at CDC, but I'm not going to act like it wasn't a problem.

Not to mention liberty and correctness in general. Decisions should be made at the smallest practicable level.

Decision that could be made by the family should not be made by the town. Those that can be made by the town should not be made by the county. Those than can be made by the county should not be made by the state. Those that can be made by the state should not be made by the federal.

You will sometimes lose out on economies of scale and ease of widespread business concerns with such a system, but you retain liberty and increased local input and minimize centralization and one-size-fits-all policy.

Some guy walking past me in one of the aisles said to me, in a rather disdainful tone, "What a zoo!"

Freedom of movement across the borders of those countries which signed up to the Schengen agreement is one of the EU's most prized achievements.
The official view of the EU institutions is that the answer to a crisis like coronavirus is more co-operation between member states, not less.

Technique called "Precordial Thump." No longer used, but I was taught it in my first CPR cert. back in 1979. It was intended for a patient that had a heart attack almost immediately before. Actually used it once at a motorcyle crash scene when the operator had a heart attack while I was talking to him in the back of an ambulance.

544 I bought a small piece of Exxon yesterday at 38.25, said I'd add when it went down another $3. But I almost sold it yesterday when it popped $2.50 ... but said "no, this is building a long term position".

Opened at 40 this morning, is now at 35. I thought that would take a few weeks, not one day ... sheesh. I'm waiting for further wipe out before bargain hunting ... "trust the plan" ha. Well, I plan to buy a lot, but it may not be till summer. looks ugly

+++++++++++
I like Prokofiev, but he is somewhat like the Nickleback of his era. Much of his stuff sounds very similar. If you listen to "Peter and the Wolf" you can get a cross section of most of his catalogue.

I miss the old Italy. Their were gypsy children who would snag a wallet or two or rifle a purse once in a while for sure. There were illegals from Africa who would sell their wares on a sqaure sheet of cloth and then pick it all up like a hobo and run off off if the cops came by, but really that was about it. Sure they still had a mafia bombing once in a while but no Chicom cops. They would not have had a need or dreamed of every having a need for that.

Sometimes it just seems the 21st century is not working out as we had hoped.

551 Mantooth was actually his name

Posted by: CN at March 13, 2020 11:34 AM

But his real given name was Randy. When he started acting, they suggested he change his name, thinking that "Mantooth" is weird, so he changed "Randy" to "Randolph."

Saw it on YouTube, so you know it's true.

555 "Am I alone in noticing that the media-driven panic shopping of most people is very similar to when a huge Blizzard or Nor'Easter is heading a your way and the media treats it like you're going to be holed up for a month?"

I had the same thought this morning. And a lot of times they whip things into a froth and the much dreaded storm turns out to be pretty much nothing.

556 Was Randy Mantooth an Indian? Mantooth seems like a pretty good Indian name. Better than "Warren" anyway.

The IMDB says he is of Seminole Indian heritage...

558 How much of the market is owned by funds?

Are the fund managers actually participating in this panic?

I would think any market professional would just be taking an extended pause during all this, and that the sellers would be scared individuals.

563 No way I would forget Randolph Mantooth. That picture is from his Emergency! days. I watched that show religiously. I was too young to understand the dialogue completely, but fire trucks, firemen, action heroes, I was hooked. The show lasted a good number of years, but I was upset when it finally ended.

564 "It's funny: progressives always want the government to have unlimited power, but they just assume that they're the only ones who will always be in charge. They never seem to consider the possibility of what would be happen if their worst enemy was voted into office and was now in charge. You know, kind of like what happened in 2016."

Also known as the "Original Position Fallacy". They're in favor of revolution because they think they're the ones who would be holding the cord to the guillotine and not the ones with their neck underneath it.

Fun Question: How many Glorious Revolutions had all the teachers and professors shot dead as part of their implementation? How many of those had this step at the very start of said revolution?

567 I learned in the late 60's that the left was only interested in getting in control. That what they complained about was what they would do if in power and that their complaints were only meant to enable that time to come as soon as possible.

I got in a lot of trouble saying that to a couple people and I learned another lesson about the left; they will bury anybody for anything if they see it as a advantage or that not doing so would endanger their aims.

Like every human the left looks out for itself. The only difference being that the left considers itself the only ones worthy of power and rights and everyone else better watch out. All the while claiming they're the only ones protecting those very same people.

It's why there's been so many gulags, concentration camps, murder camps, mass murders and general mayhem whenever the left does have complete power.

I fear now for my country as this hysteria is at such a height that many things bad are now possible as people are not thinking rationality and may fall in with some very dangerous ideas if they can be convinced it will save them.

568 When I was a kid, I was forced to watch Emergency! with my grandmother, if I was going to watch the only TV in the house. And I had a huge crush on Julie London. Being in my 50's now, I would have a crush on her at the age she was then too.
