I am so sick and f*cking tired of this Coronavirus crap.

Jeez people get a grip. And you wonder why I am a misanthrope.

Other than this, I have nothing. Be nice to one another. Open thread.

Why is your cat at Walmart. Your cat does not want to be at Walmart. If your cat wants to be at Walmart, inspect your cat closely per the service manual. Is it actually a cat? Are you sure? Really sure?

20 There has been too much violence. Too much pain. But I have an honorable compromise. Just walk away. Give me your TP, the Lysol, the hand sanitizer, and the whole milk, and I'll spare your lives. Just walk away and we'll give you a safe passageway in the wastelands. Just walk away and there will be an end to the horror.

I await your answer. You have a full day to decide.

Most schools in North Texas have opted to extend spring break a week. My kid's school is taking the "wait and see" approach. They're not extending this coming week's break until later in the week, depending how things go with this silliness.

Huck, we are just a small operation. 75 taps. We use buckets still. The ATV has a 35 gal poly tank strapped on back that we use to transport sap to the barn. Bourbon is involved if people bring it along. Could be wine or beer or gin or shine. I'm easy.

53 All these kids being sent home is idiotic, when the virus is a big nothing burger for people not in the identified risk groups (smokers, living in polluted air, aged, compromised immune systems, diabetics or heart disease sufferers).

How will families cope if they still need to work, while having young kids sent home from schools? Lots of latch-key children suddenly, I guess. Kind of like my own house growing up, when we were expected to take care of ourselves and managed to do so without a lot of fuss. This virus thingee might teach some self-reliance to people.

That's a sane approach. My son's school has been on top of this - they were sending out updates starting in January, since there are foreign students, including some from China. They put restrictions on kids returning from Christmas break and/or choosing to go home for spring break (i.e. don't come back from China, etc.). They're closed until April 13th, but will likely provide some online instruction before that.

Good for you, everything here is cancelling. Even places that swore they wouldn't have done so. Time will tell if this is good or bad.

I suspect the reasoning behind the shutdowns is so that kiddies don't contract it and spread it to compromised people. Our schools were very concerned about this, especially about the elderly in the home (we live in a town with many Asian and Indian families where grandma lives in as a babysitter) and kids with those ubiquitous inhalers.

because he is male, old and white and hates what he has done with his life to allow his life to become so miserable.

However, he can't bring himself to blame his actions or admit he ever had a choice, so he has to blame the things he could never change: his sex, his age and his race.

He won't look for help until he has made his life so miserable that he has no choice, and he has too much money and too many parasites to let that happen, so he is probably damned.

118 Read something online yesterday that said if you were sick back in October - December timeline with fever and a cough that just wouldn't go away, you had this virus.

I had it right after Thanksgiving. Raging fever for a few hours, chest and head congestion, then a cough that took over a month to go away.

I was reasonably miserable for about 2 days.

I survived and didn't find myself needing an over abundance of toilet paper throughout the ordeal.

Our operation was similarly small. Believe it or not, it was at my high school. We had a hundred acres of land or so someone had donated in the deep distant past (wasn't worth much in those days, is now probably) and a biology teacher built the evaporator shed with more donations and volunteer labor. During the week we students collected sap and stored it in a couple of big poly tanks, or what my memory thinks looked like poly tanks, and then on Saturdays and Sundays we went full tilt boogie running the evaporator. It was a lot of fun work, and at the end we had a supply of maple syrup to sell as a school fundraiser.

That same bio teacher used the syrup proceeds to start a trout hatchery at our school. Pretty remarkable man, now that I think back, though at the time he was always making us work (so I used to try to duck into empty classrooms whenever I saw him coming).

Rick Perry said one of the best things I've heard a candidate say back in 2016 when he was running for President. He said "My goal is to make the federal government as inconsequential in your life as possible." I find this genius.

131 We were on the way to a great start of the morning, but the three year old walked in just as things were getting interesting. He's lucky he's so cute.

It does make sense to close down petri dishes like elementary schools and daycares. The daycare is still open, actually, so the 3yo may be there next week so I can telework more effectively. But we did just find out that one of the cases in Austin is a local resident who was symptomatic the day they left, so maybe not.

Today, my cousin has a baby shower. I wanted to skip it because I'm an introvert, but apparently a bunch of people are canceling because of the virus, and my sister says my cousin is disappointed, so I'll go ahead and go since I'm not that concerned. Not going to hug anyone though. Might not eat either.

I would bet King is now commenting on Trump's Wuhan flue team to make sure the mob knows he's still woke.

164 Flu A was really bad this year. That's what put my dad in the hospital. My older son got it too and recovered pretty quickly, but he was very miserable for a few days. I am still really surprised neither my 3yo, who was climbing all over his feverish brother the day he got sick, nor I got it. I guess the Tamiflu did the job?

There was a part where he went off on blacks (he called them n*****s) and crime, then specified that there were n*****s and black folks as there IS a difference.

Said look up the n word in the dictionary and it says n's are "shiftless and lazy. I guess there's white n*****s too!"

193 I have never been so ashamed of the people I share this country with.

What the hell happened to people?

Just those who are my age are trouble enough. They should know better. I DO. And so should they. They don't have the excuse of 24/7 indoctrination via media and school softening them up to be manipulated like puppets by people they KNOW they can't and shouldn't trust.

They should KNOW that no person in the world is as wrong and stupid as they've claimed Trump is from day one. Nor that every false story was one that was to negatively impact Trump's reputation.

Real Life doesn't happen like that. They KNOW the media lies. They KNOW that the left Lies and desires power over every move anyone else makes.

They know his strongest detractors are people who are paid to lie and exhibit false emotions and repeat made up stories written by others. Yet they continue to believe them to the letter. Actually repeating with the exact words used the lies they've been told by the media about Trump and Conservatives and the world.

Now we enter a situation where the country could actually shatter due to the conflicting stories about a threat that is still under investigation.

The media needs to be suspended unless what they have to say is backed by named sources. NO more "Sources say" or "told to us by people who aren't cleared to speak" or any other form of anonymous sources used to claim facts not in evidence.

We really must regain control of our awareness of reality and the media is the first place to start demanding that they do so on pain of some punishment.

216 "... suspect the reasoning behind the shutdowns is so that kiddies don't
contract it and spread it to compromised people. Our schools were very
concerned about this, especially about the elderly in the home"

We DO need to educate people on the protocols even in home, for those that are maybe exposed. One of the main doctors working the ICU in Italy gave an interview ... saying in the home, try to use a different bathroom, observe some "rules".

We are still learning about how the virus works, Italy apparently let in a lot more Chinese, but we also let some in, then let in some infected from Europe. The elderly and otherwise compromised are the ones that need to isolate themselves, more than most. But for age 70 in Italy the mortality rates was still only 3.7% (iirc) ... wasn't till like 80 that it was 14% or so ...

If the MSM wants to say deaths will be over a million, fine. Then say we can keep it at normal flu rate or lower (even 25K would be lower) ... then Trump can claim victory, and blame the MSM for creating hysteria and economic distress. But we have to get past the peak first ... which they say is 3-6 weeks away, current guess.

224 >>CDC NIGHTMARE SCENARIO: 1.7 MILLION DEATHS

Mentioned this yesterday. . . Thurs. night Tucker interviewed former CDC head Dr. Friedman. Tucker asks him "You predicted that there could be 1 million deaths, explain how you got that number." Dr. Friedman than proceeded to give the now boilerplate spiel on how we must social distance, cancel events with 250+ people, shut down schools, etc.. It was as if he had not seen the news since Sunday. We've already done all that.

It seemed obvious that Dr. Friedman (and probably others from past or present CDC) hadn't adjusted his thinking to current environment - he's used to spouting the same recommendations, never actually upgrading them now that people are actually following the advice. Like all of the authorities who keep lecturing us on hand washing and face touching. That's all you got? Alrighty, thanks for the tips, go away.

I'm thinking the same. My basic cable setup, very basic, has MeTV and H and I, plus one or two other things like the Weather Channel. But the movie and the westerns channels have gone to something else.

If I buy a modern TV, I can receive the local things, plus MeTV and others, over the air, right? And spend the money on Internet instead.

What I've read, there's a distinct possibility it WAS COVID. We just didn't know it was and didn't test for it. Flu tests would come back negative, so they'd just declare "upper respiratory infection" and treat it as such.

278 You can't over prepare for an emergency.

************

Well amidst all the static and cacophony about the virus, that is actually a provocative and potentially useful discussion to have.

Is there such a thing as "over"-preparing for an emergency? I think if it results in misallocation of resources, or a form of present-time paralysis due to indecisiveness or lack of actionable data that you CAN over-prepare. Or at least misalign your preparations to the circumstances.

I like to think of it as an OODA loop. Gather as much information as you can, grade the believability of the data you do gather, form a range of possible future events, make contingency assessments and then allocate resources.

My wife categorizes it as

1. Listening and Communication (data gathering)
2. Baseline and Basics. (what do we know, where are we starting from, where do we want to go)
3. Resources and Limitations

310 The stores selling the modern TVs also have the antennas, I guess? And can the same TV also be used for Internet? I have a desktop and a couple of laptops, and I suppose the provider will sell or rent me the router or modem so I can do wireless while at home. Will the TV be able to pick that up?
Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius at March 14, 2020 10:19 AM (4c+5M)

The TV's will have the digital tuner built in, but you'll still need the external antenna. As for internet, you'll need service, of course, but depending on the TV, it may have Netflix or other streaming service capabilities built in for either wired or WiFi connectivity to your home network.

right, the risk has always been that maybe 20% would need ventilators ... but US has more ICU than most ... also surgery rooms have ventilators (this doc says) ... so elective surgeries can be delayed and those rooms used. The Italy ICU guy says even now they have been able to give everyone ICU treatment that needed it. But they are straining the staff ...

cover up all of my windows with aluminum foil, to be safe, and she's only goin' out if she wraps
plastic bags on her hands and her feet and her hair. She's over at her house right now, coverin'

yes, but this type of pneumonia is not responsive to antibiotics, which is the issue. A typical flu might have a milder viral pneumonia, but could also have a very bad bacterial one. The bacterial one will respond to antibiotics, so this is worse.

329 Just go back from the grocery store.

As expected, much restocking going on. Toilet paper is a lost cause, but about half of the meat had been replaced and well over most of the bread.

Interesting thing I noticed is that people are being very selective. They're going for:

1. Store brands
2. On sale items

Thus: the canned/dry food aisle had gaping holes in some areas, others untouched. The store brand canned chicken was completely gone, but the Tyson or Armour stuff was still there. I guess people would rather starve than pay the extra 20 cents.

It wasn't even a poor/rich thing. Chunk chicken was gone, but shredded chicken (which costs less) was still plentiful.

Similarly, corned beef hash was plentiful and it was ON SALE.

But Chef Boyardee was almost wiped out.

I think people are seeing areas getting picked over and thinking "OMIGOSH! If someone else thinks that's important, I should get it, too."

333 While the panic buying, especially of TP, is ridiculous, the medical people in my family have convinced me that the precautions make sense. Yes, most people who get it will have only mild symptoms, but 5 percent will get extremely sick and require ICU care. There aren't enough ventilators. Trying to "flatten the curve" makes sense. We'll have the resources to care for the seriously ill. If there is a sudden, very high, sharp spike it will overwhelm the system and endanger not only the people who get very sick from this, but other people with critical care issues.

So don't run around with hair on fire, but practice good hygiene and be prudent.

And don't act like this is nothing. For you, maybe. For your neighbor or old relative getting this could be a death sentence.

It's been happening for years in the Global Warming scam, proponents will take measurements from the past from instruments that were only accurate to +/- 1 degree, and then calculate predictions out to the 3rd decimal place, without even understanding why that's so wrong. They're making up scary numbers to suit their fantasies, just because they think that anything they can get from a calculator is Truth From on HIgh.

No one has any idea of how many people have been exposed in this country - it could easily be 10 times as many people as estimated, with the vast majority NOT developing any symptoms at all. Which would mean that the infection rate might be being overstated by a factor of 10 - or not. Point is, everyone who's tossing around numbers is just using things that have been made up to suit their fancies - no one has any idea right now what the actual numbers are, certainly NOT the CDC.

It's become Nutsville, USA around here.

Empty shelves.

Long lines with people loading up all kinds of craps in their carts.

Just went looking to grab something for dinner.

Meat /fish counters wiped out.

But, they were putting out whole chickens, so-

I bought 33!!!!!!!111!!!!11!!!!.

Just joking bought two.

And a couple of bag salads cuz you can't horde those babies, so there were still some left.

Holy Cow! people are stupid.

But, it turns out the local ISD promoted the panic by sending out an emergency notice telling parents that they needed to horde enough for 2 weeks.

Which meant, of course, the parental units all went out and loaded up for 6 months.

*sigh*

Here's hoping sanity kicks in next week.

375 The prepper lifestyle can be kinda fun, if not overdone. It can have the added benefit of being prepared, and if done in conjunction with community ... can build stronger relationships.

But the hording and "we're all gonna die" can be mentally harmful, even in dire times. With the internet we can be very well informed (or misinformed) ... and not be isolated from loved ones, even if home alone. Ivanka was encouraging people to support their local businesses ... and that needs to go beyond visiting the local WalMart to buy China products.

The globalists have tried to turn us all into consumer widgets ... they praise diversity, except for protection of Americanism itself. We were actually their target, imo. Never let a crisis go to waste ... maybe we can use that to return to America First, instead of always a way to break apart America using manufactured crises (and manufactured consent).

---
I think by next week the panic will have subsided and people will be used to the new normal. Cases will climb, plateau and hopefully subside. It won't be uniform, though.

I get the people thinking the panic is overdone but the problem is that if you wait too long, NOTHING will stop it. Too much is still unknown.

I hope it is totally overdone. I don't want people to die and I think this is a good reminder that we haven't figured out everything and there are still forces beyond our control.

I also see a lot of sharp folks who specialize in risk pointing out that the unknown unknowns are so dangerous that we have to err on the side of caution. This is isn't a global warming panic where we're supposed to de-industrialize immediately and hope that next century gets marginally better weather.

Three weeks of pain could save us from seven-digit casualties. Europe is going to provide a useful contrast, as will parts of the US.

I think that's the next thing to happen. California is going to go up, big time. Cases may fade in the midwest, and explode on the coasts. That's my biggest fear.

384 Yes, most people who get it will have only mild symptoms, but 5 percent will get extremely sick and require ICU care. There aren't enough ventilators. Trying to "flatten the curve" makes sense. We'll have the resources to care for the seriously ill. If there is a sudden, very high, sharp spike it will overwhelm the system and endanger not only the people who get very sick from this, but other people with critical care issues."

This is one of those numbers being tossed around, and I don't mean to pick on the poster who put this up, you see it everywhere. BUT - if there are a large number of people who've been exposed, who have NOT developed symptoms and who did NOT go to any doctor because, why do that? THEN the actual number, rather than 5%, may only be 0.5% who will need to be hospitalized. And if it's only 0.5%, then we don't have a ventilator shortage at all, and there's no reason to panic about it.

11 years in the grocery biz: Store brands are contracted through Major brands. As demand for major increase, there is 'slippage' in the majors being able to meet the Store brand needs. Even the slight impact of 'frenzy' on major brands, the supply of store brands drop (its in the contracts).

This, and yes the need to save the 20 cents leads to the disparate representation of available food stuffs.

Older people and those with underlying health problems are the most vulnerable. The immune system tends to weaken with age, even in healthy and active people.

Risk from coronavirus starts to increase for people who are over 60 and is heightened more for those over 80. Longtime smokers are likely more susceptible to a serious infection due to their damaged lungs.

According to the World Health Organization, people with mild illness recover in about two weeks, while those with more severe ailments who survive may take three to six weeks to rebound."

In 2006, the hard frost came late to my part of Michigan. The temperature hovered above freezing, lots of cold rain but nothing to kill off the last of the bugs.

I came down with some crud, tried to power through it, and after multiple trips to the doctor had to be hospitalized.

Right after I was checked in, they closed the hospital. The other one in town shut down shortly afterward. The ER was overflowing and I spent my first night in an exam room on a gurney. The next night they planted me in the cardiac wing because that's where the beds were.

The upshot is that we don't need much to completely break the system.

People trying to down play this saying "only" a small number will be hospitalized need to pipe down.

Doesn't anyone remember 2006 as a Plague Year? Was it a noted time of privation? No. Most people didn't get sick or go to the hospital but for weeks it was a total mess in a *normal year*.

But a lot of people got sick and Lansing Michigan, which is home of a major university medical school and supposedly top-level hospitals was pushed to the brink with both hospitals closed.

I agree, it's all a big "if". I didn't mean to imply that my take was accurate either, I don't know. My point is that NO ONE knows, and all of the numbers being tossed out are just being made up, with people pretending to know something that they don't know. It means that precautions are justified, but full blown panic is not. OF course there's a possibility that this could be terrible, but the possibility is just as great that it could be essentially over by May 1, with everyone wondering what all the hype was about.

as to California - of course they're at extra risk, because they've created an incubator with the collapse of public health standards and a huge underclass living hand to mouth.

there are newer tests coming out that are much faster ... being able to identify the contagious in ten minutes would help a lot. None of the folks who are talking this down can offer an iron-clad, 100 percent refundable guarantee that they are correct.

This is short-term pain. If nothing else, it's a much-needed test of the system because the NEXT disease may well be the one that carries off millions.

I need to take a quick moment and recommend everyone listen to Glenn Beck's interview of Lara Logan on his podcast. It just came out today, it's about 90 minutes long and it is absolutely worth your time.

Just a word of warning, but they do go into her rape in Egypt and it's...not graphic, but let's say its very hard to listen to. If you want to skip past it, it's about...13 minutes in? Goes on for 10+ minutes, thereabouts. Although it is worth pointing out that despite the horror she endured she is a strong and clearly, as Hammerfall would put it, unbent, unbowed and unbroken.

yes, we could come out stronger. But there is a huge political attack against Trump, by the "globalists". So keeping Trump 2021 alive is part of the strategic thinking in managing expectations.

for instance, I've heard a few times, commentary around the world ... "this could mark the end of globalism", or the counter ... "this is a global problem". (and those that throw in "we must not let this distract us from going carbon neutral).

But this is not a "global community problem" ... it is a China Virus problem that they chose to spread to the world, to save face. Trump was call racist for stopping some China flights early, and even recently Europe was largely wide open. It is not hard to see how it is not just virtuous foreign culture that infiltrates with open borders. We should have seen the cultural destruction early on ... but now they want to call what China hat wrought "a global community problem". (tower of Babel, confusing languages .. does that story apply?)

577 Our public health system has been a joke for
decades. If the end result of this is that we get drug production moved
back to the US, force public health authorities to get serious about
epidemics and *only* have a few dozen people die, I for one will offer
prayers of thanksgiving rather than snark or sarcasm.

Public health services were set up to manage and prevent infectious diseases in the community: TB, measles, smallpox, water borne diseases, etc.
However, the whole practice has forgotten that and has been used as a crowbar to control everyone's life through banning sugar to plastic straws, to gun control "for the good of the society"

This is why public health is a joke and a failure, because like anything that is too big to fail and subsidized and promoted for failure, it has stopped being useful and has become a whip and a piggybank for friends and family.

578 Went into the Lowe Depot for lightbulbs and saw 3 people carrying hands- and armpits-full of loosie paper towel rolls coming out. Stupid assholes.

On the bright side, the DMV was very light, so it took less than an hour to get signed up for "real id" to prove I'm not an illegal, since illegals supersede citizens, and can board a plane. Also stupid assholes.

579 I am sick of this crap too!!

If you don't feel well, stay home. Otherwise, wash your hands more than you usually do and live life folks.

Our media is the WORST institution in this country and it is really hard not to think they are more financed by non-American entities than every.
