The Morning Rant: Minimalist Edition

punk-monkey.jpg

At the risk of disappointing the burning hair brigade, I simply don't have much of a rant in me. Dinner last night was a repurposing of my mediocre pork dry rub as a fish rub, and a version of a "Cocktail a la Philly" I had this week in...um...Philly. Both were grand, and in the grand scheme of things were more important than the temporary but painful dislocations in the stock market and the country in general.

We will survive this, and based on the rapidly changing statistics describing the Wuhan Flu, it is probably going to turn out to be similar to a bad flu season, but with less total exposure and therefore far fewer deaths. Just look up "Hasty generalization," or "Fallacy of insufficient sample," or "Law of small numbers." They are all pretty much the same thing, and simply put; statistics based on small sample sizes are inherently less accurate than when the sample sizes increase.

Here is a mildly amusing essay that seems to put everything in a bit better perspective.

The Apocalyptic Sneeze

As a great barman once said: You can only be a snob in matters of alcohol.

And if Aristotle maintained that living well is better than living, I say that drinking well is better than drinking. Especially when the apocalypse is presented in the form of a sneeze.

COVID-19 isn't Small Pox, it isn't Cholera, it isn't Malaria...all of which killed millions. We will weather this storm, and hopefully the experience will further expose the Media and our typical politicians for the venal, corrupt hacks they are.

And like the good soldiers in the conservative army, we should fight back. For instance:

In case anyone is still wondering why Trump did a travel ban in Europe, Fauci just told Congress that the majority of new infections we are seeing are coming from Europe not China.

25 I think it's quite a good thing for all of us that Tom Hanks and his wife tested positive, and here's why: They are healthy adults, with top notch medical care, and not part of any high risk group. What will happen is that they'll get a fever and have a cough for a couple of weeks, and in a month they will both be just fine. And it's going to be very helpful for everyone to see a very public and visible couple who will have experienced that.

Spain stages a revival of the Spanish Flu (Philly style)

For the past week, pro-government Spanish journalists have ridiculed the drastic measures of other countries and chanted that pernicious mantra: "the coronavirus is nothing but a flu." And so, while Italy, Iran, France, Germany, Switzerland, South Korea, and Japan decreed important bans and urged their citizens to avoid rallies and take extreme precautions, the Spanish government threw protesters into the streets while millions of people maintained their travel plans and social gatherings.
On Sunday, as I watched the packed feminist march in Madrid, I suspected something terrible might happen. The Spanish government led the Spaniards to believe that, for some mysterious reason, perhaps associated with the magical properties of our red wine, we were immune to this virus. And according to official reports, we were, but only until the first minute after the end of the last feminist march. Then they admitted we didn't have 374 coronavirus cases but in fact more than 1,200, an evolving disaster equal to or worse than the Italian one.

Break room last night was Trump this and Trump said it was fake.

When I mentioned that the US has about 200,000 ventilators that see 100% use during a normal flu season I was asked 'why don't we have more?'

I kinda looked at them like a trout had sprouted from their forehead while wondering about their grasp of costs of such equipment. Or how often this equipment is used outside of flu season.

Instead I then mentioned how Italy is going to cut off treatment to the elderly above a certain age if they contract COVID-19. And then left the break room to go back to work.

52 The stock market decline is obvious now - first, the Oil War is still collapsing the energy markets, and the travel ban just made that incrementally worse. Demand is collapsing and supply is soaring, that means Crash in all Energy markets.

Second, the travel ban is going to hurt the EU quite a bit, and even though America will benefit by keeping that money here, there are going to be many vicious negative feedback loops set up as the EU deals with it's losses. And this is going to cause chaos in the markets and will take months to work through. So yes, I now think it's possible that over the next few weeks, the DJIA could fall as low as 14,000 before bouncing back a bit.

60 Writer Anne Applebaum wrote an excellent, harrowing history of the Soviet prison system, "Gulag." It was a depressing but important work, especially since so many academics and journalists ignore the horrors of Communism.

Today she works for the WaPo and sent out a tweet aping the Chinese government line. It made me sad to see that. Most journalists are uninformed assholes and hacks. But she wrote a book that was genuinely scholarly about the frightfulness of Communism - and now she's bowing to it. She's become what she once fought against. It's sad to see a writer I once admire lose her soul and integrity.

Difference made = 0.

The media would have the same reaction anyway.

Honestly, he'd probably have been better saying nothing at all, and just doing it. Maybe a few tweets to say why and what his reasoning was. But that wouldn't move the needle, either.

Fact is, all Trump can do is the best he can do, and let the chips fall where they may, with regard to results, and voter approval. Nothing he says can improve his public image vis-a-vis media coverage.

The man could announce that he personally devised a combination cure and vaccine, that also whitens your teeth and adds three inches to your dick/cup size, and the headlines would be "Introduction of Trumpexa Prompts Panic Selloff on Toilet Paper, Sanitizer" and "Trump Org Implicated in Insider Trading on Pharmaceutical Stocks; Connection to Trump's CDC Being Examined by SEC."

Several minutes a couple of aisles later, I turned to my dad and asked, "Dad, what is Phil Collins Mix."

He stopped and thought about it for a moment and then said, quite seriously and without a trace of laughter, "I don't know. But whatever it is, it's probably pretty lame."

I liked Capaldi, but the dark turn didn't really seem to fit the show very well.

But Matt Smith's first season is, in my humble opinion, the best the reboot ever got, and it's not that close. Strong individual episodes. An overarching plot for the whole season. Quality companions. Bowties AND fezzes. It had it all.

259 We will survive this, and based on the rapidly changing statistics describing the Wuhan Flu, it is probably going to turn out to be similar to a bad flu season, but with less total exposure and therefore far fewer deaths.

The experience of Northern Italy, a developed, First World area indicates why we should be concerned. The number of cases exploded very quickly from 1,000 to 12,000 cases today, and even with just 12,000 cases, they are having to let people die, because they don't have enough medical resources (like respirators) to treat everyone. And it's not just 80-year-olds getting sick - plenty of non-elderly people are having to be put on respirators.

We have no idea how bad this is going to get, but it almost certainly is going to be considerably worse than a bad flu season.

I doubt it was released intentionally, but who knows. Maybe the CIA planted it ... but yeah, it also silenced the Hong Kong protests, and we hear little about the Mueller coup being uncovered, after 3 years of screaming Trump/Russia. Many things have changed ... never let a crisis go to waste.

BUT maybe we get the market bubble collapse out of the way and can rightly blame it on China, who only Trump has been fighting all along. And maybe we have more reason to repatriate critical manufacturing.

Pension funds and average investors take it on the chin though ... Soros types and those that make riches by playing games in the market (not long term investing) will get richer in this decline. Buy and hold people have been buying all the way up, may have losses now ... Soros says thank-you for your support. Disenlurking for a moment. I'm damned if I'm going to jump out a window because everyone else is jumping out a window and self-interested operatives are telling me I have to jump out a window.

I will, of course, take prudent measures. I don't go out much right now anyway, so the extent of my social interactions is little changed. I make sure to wash my hands frequently and keep things clean. But I'm not running out and cornering the market on toilet paper (an example of social panic if there ever was one) or behaving like a fool.

Maybe it's because Her Majesty and I are accustomed to threats of hurricanes. We make sure we have water on hand for the dogs and for ourselves, that there's gas for the generators, there's easily-preparable food on hand, etc. But we don't throw random stuff in the car and flee.

Nature, I've learned with Hurricane Harvey, will do what it will do. You can take personal steps to mitigate its impact but otherwise it's like Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God.

My really big concern is for Her Majesty. She was asked to judge the 2020 BCOA National Specialty in Albuquerque next month when the scheduled judge had to withdraw. This is the pinnacle of her 50 years in the sport and I hope the event isn't cancelled.

He took a series for children and ended up trying to make it dark, but it was dark for children so I just lost interest.

I think there is a China/Iran infiltration issue there. And the open travel through the EU may be good reason to close off Europe for 30 days, then re-evaluate. We closed off China/other hot zones early ... but many still came through ... not as open as Italy/Iran though ... closed borders worked for Russia, and Singapore I think.

373 Major League Soccer just announced they're suspending the season indefinitely. The NBA effectively canceled their season, and the NHL is considering that as well. Many college lacrosse teams - the Ivy League was the first - are canceling their seasons, and my son thinks his season will be canceled, too.

I feel badly for the seniors who worked hard all their lives only to see their final seasons wiped away because of an overreaction. It's not fair to them. The University of Pittsburgh told their seniors there will be no graduation ceremony. It's basically get your diploma and get out for the graduates.

Everyone is so worried about the virus that they forgot they're dealing with college students. If you cannot trust your own students to stay home when they're sick, you might as well close your doors. The unintended consequences of these measures are screwing with people's lives.

Many Italians in Northern Italy sold their leather goods and textiles companies to China. Italy then allowed 100,000 Chinese from Wuhan/Wenzhou to move to Italy to work in these factories, with direct Wuhan flights. Result: Northern Italy is Europe's hotspot for Wuhan Coronavirus

The bioresearch lab in Wahua was working on virus research and when said experiements were done, had lab workers who took animals out of lab that had survived and sold them to make some cash in the wahu meat market down the street. Like they have been known to do for years, this isn't something new. And then whoever bought them for dinner handled them , ending up with the virus from fluids , etc. and away it went.
