I love this type of painting, romantic and idealized, with all the color and detail. Add to that a known story to give context makes it more enjoyable. Frank Dicksee's portarits are very nice but his heroic scenes appeal to me more. I don't know if Dicksee is considered the last of the Pre-Raphaelites, but he should be.
I wonder if the artist had an influence on NC Wyeth and the large color (Sunday edition) panels for the old Prince Valiant comic strip. BTW, Sting has an excellent rendition of "La Belle Dame Sans Merci" song. There is a video on Youtube. No romantics on the morning threads, for sure. I always liked the poem by Keats, and given the Pre-Raphaelite-movement's tastes, inevitably one of them would use the painting for inspiration. Just got back from Krogers.
Zero paper goods (I'm good there though) except a limit of one of those small like 6 x 5 boxes of Kleenex per person, no sanitizer, no cleaning products, no softsoap. Milk was good. Some eggs. You might not get the size-brand combo you want but they had plenty. *Some* bread. I'm on the low-fodmap diet and I'm supposed to eat sourdough or potato bread. Absolutely none. But regular old white bread, they had plenty. And fresh-baked was plentiful. Meat - again, you very well might not get what you wanted normally, but they had hamburger, lots of sausage, lots of chicken & pork. Steaks were wiped out. According to the poem, the horse is the knight's. He lifted this strange lady onto it and walks beside. Otherwise the horse would more likely be skeletal and/or pale like in Medieval depictions of Death. I like how the artist made black and red the dominant colors as these two are most associated with death.
The idea of Death as a beautiful woman is interesting. While knights would be familiar with death, he would probably expect it to come as the Reaper. But here Death is beautiful, seductive and unassuming. Death is unexpected. She sidles up and seduces him, and when he thinks he is most safe and at peace, that's when he dies. Perhaps this is a knight seriously wounded in battle and welcomes Death when she comes. And while Death has no mercy, to make this knight's last moments full of peace and love and beauty is a mercy. His tits are already covered by the cuirass. The "tassels" protected the armpits when the arms were raised. Plate armor being the excellent defense it was, many combatants aimed thrusts at the joints, and a good stab through the armpit would be troublesome! So a couple of plates got added on to help cover it, and the added weight wouldn't be that much more...

I have been wrong on this precise topic before, but I think we might be looking at the end of the EU as a going concern, at least anything like it is today. The question of "Can the EU superstate handle a crisis" has now been answered.
- No travel restrictions - Little or no mutual aid - Individual nations doing whatever the hell they want - No military to assist with logistics, delivery, or - G-d forbid - keeping order - Not coordinated superstate-level strategic stockpiles of goods or fuel - Inadequate state-level liberalism to permit local response (at least not in a way that is technically legal per Brussels policy) If the press whores want catastrophe and failure, they can find it by looking across the pond at how their dream globalist structure (though sculpted in miniature) is doing. 313 I have been wrong on this precise topic before, but I think we might be looking at the end of the EU as a going concern, at least anything like it is today.
Please don't forget about the value of rubbing your hands together in your hand washing & use of hand sanitizers -
rub all surfaces to ensure the soap or sanitizer reaches all areas of your hands including the nail beds. The rubbing also causes a minor amount of friction and disrupts the mucus covering on bacteria and or natural oils on your skin that might be trapping viruses/bacteria. It's not enough to spray your hands with sanitizer Posted by: batterup at March 19, 2020 10:44 AM (K4I9O) 514
