90 I love this type of painting, romantic and idealized, with all the color and detail. Add to that a known story to give context makes it more enjoyable. Frank Dicksee's portarits are very nice but his heroic scenes appeal to me more. I don't know if Dicksee is considered the last of the Pre-Raphaelites, but he should be.

I wonder if the artist had an influence on NC Wyeth and the large color (Sunday edition) panels for the old Prince Valiant comic strip.

BTW, Sting has an excellent rendition of "La Belle Dame Sans Merci" song. There is a video on Youtube.

His tits are already covered by the cuirass. The "tassels" protected the armpits when the arms were raised. Plate armor being the excellent defense it was, many combatants aimed thrusts at the joints, and a good stab through the armpit would be troublesome! So a couple of plates got added on to help cover it, and the added weight wouldn't be that much more...

Zero paper goods (I'm good there though) except a limit of one of those small like 6 x 5 boxes of Kleenex per person, no sanitizer, no cleaning products, no softsoap.

Milk was good. Some eggs. You might not get the size-brand combo you want but they had plenty. *Some* bread. I'm on the low-fodmap diet and I'm supposed to eat sourdough or potato bread. Absolutely none. But regular old white bread, they had plenty. And fresh-baked was plentiful.

Meat - again, you very well might not get what you wanted normally, but they had hamburger, lots of sausage, lots of chicken & pork. Steaks were wiped out.

I think Medieval warhorses were closer to modern Frisians and Lipizzaners (which are both warhorse breeds from slightly later) than modern draft horses. Big and powerful, but as nimble as possible.

Fighting hand-to-hand on horseback is more about maneuvering the horse than the weapon. Big is good, but you need to be able to move the horse as needed.

Dick Van Dyke, is that you?

Posted by: vmom 2020 at March 19, 2020 10:16 AM (G546f)

291 According to the poem, the horse is the knight's. He lifted this strange lady onto it and walks beside. Otherwise the horse would more likely be skeletal and/or pale like in Medieval depictions of Death. I like how the artist made black and red the dominant colors as these two are most associated with death.

The idea of Death as a beautiful woman is interesting. While knights would be familiar with death, he would probably expect it to come as the Reaper. But here Death is beautiful, seductive and unassuming. Death is unexpected. She sidles up and seduces him, and when he thinks he is most safe and at peace, that's when he dies. Perhaps this is a knight seriously wounded in battle and welcomes Death when she comes. And while Death has no mercy, to make this knight's last moments full of peace and love and beauty is a mercy.

But here Death is beautiful, seductive and unassuming. Death is unexpected. She sidles up and seduces him, and when he thinks he is most safe and at peace, that's when he dies. President Trump wants the media - and the public - to be debating
the etiquette of "Chinese virus" rather than discussing the
administration's slow response, inconsistent statements and lack of
prepardness.

When we turn the corner on this, The Media will dislocate shoulders
patting themselves on the back for their timely, life-saving delivery of
medical info to the public, while screaming TrumpKiller consistently
downplayed the risk and didn't tell people in-time about needed
precautions and preparations.

313 I have been wrong on this precise topic before, but I think we might be looking at the end of the EU as a going concern, at least anything like it is today. The question of "Can the EU superstate handle a crisis" has now been answered.

- No travel restrictions
- Little or no mutual aid
- Individual nations doing whatever the hell they want
- No military to assist with logistics, delivery, or - G-d forbid - keeping order
- Not coordinated superstate-level strategic stockpiles of goods or fuel
- Inadequate state-level liberalism to permit local response (at least not in a way that is technically legal per Brussels policy)

If the press whores want catastrophe and failure, they can find it by looking across the pond at how their dream globalist structure (though sculpted in miniature) is doing.

415 313 I have been wrong on this precise topic before, but I think we might be looking at the end of the EU as a going concern, at least anything like it is today.

Starting, and against the rules of EU. Border restrictions within the Union began (I think with Czech republic), but it's still against their rules. Their system cannot work.

And yes, some of the national militaries are responding, but they are weak and there can be no order for, say, a Polish unit to respond to a condition in France.

Looking at hand sanitizer, it is basically alcohol and moisturizer, isn't it?

The recipe seems to be 2 to 1 Everclear to aloe vera gel.

I made some with 2/3 cup everclear to 1/3 cup aloe gel. Put it in a sealed jar and shook it well - the aloe vera gel did not want to combine with the alcohol at first. Once combined, put it in the empty pump bottle of purell. Voila!

rub all surfaces to ensure the soap or sanitizer reaches all areas of your hands including the nail beds. The rubbing also causes a minor amount of friction and disrupts the mucus covering on bacteria and or natural oils on your skin that might be trapping viruses/bacteria.

Several groceries here, including Walmart, are instituting "senior shopping hours," opening an hour early one or two days a week, so that people 60 or 65+ (those at greatest risk for the virus, apparently) can shop easily. The fumes are flammable, no? Plugging in an electrical appliance, or turning it on once it's plugged in, could generate a little spark.

I tried mixing with a hand held whip in a mixing bowl but the aloe gel was stubbornly gummy. It also contains lidocaine, so not only does it disinfect, but it doesn't hurt putting it on! Kidding. But the sealed jar did the trick, like combining salad dressing ingredients.

In Ohio, there are still State stores, but also you can buy booze at some grocery stores (some Kroger's have really good liquor rooms, have to be 21 to go in).
My younger son works at a private liquor store, and they are doing great business (with the bars closed).
He also told me that some bars that they wholesale to are have problems with people trying to break in.

Drinking is a social thing, and some drinkers/alcoholics are having trouble coping with the bars being closed.

600 There's a simple refrigerator roll recipe (involving
yeast) that give you a dough mix good for three days and you can bake
fresh rolls every day.

Posted by: Commissar Hrothgar at March 19, 2020 10:59 AM (BiNEL)

Rolls freeze extremely well in those thick freezer ziploc bags so you only have to bake them on one day if you want. I don't like the ziploc brand because they smell but the local grocery store brand is awesome.

602 Liquid hand soap is scarce in the stores too

Dish soap, laundry detergent, just need a surfactant. Wash it off, kill the outer layer. I think it would be counter-productive to use alcohol so often that your skin cracks.

WuHan Flu and every death can be laid at the PRC leadership. They need a bullet to the head for trying to suppress and destroy evidence after the WuHan Flu started to spread starting last December.

610 That picture was hanging in just about every girl's dorm room in college. I distinctly remember seeing that print while I was feeling up a sophomore. I think my wife has it in the basement.

Since Death is Coming for us all soon, and we now have to shut down the Beaches, for the Children, er, the Grandparents, what's your conception of the afterlife? Who the fuck wants to hang around Earth on a ventilator when Valhalla awaits. Or, as the Pope says, there's no hell, so I'm looking forward to golfing with Hitler, Einstein, and Andy Warhol.

DanMa'am was so happy with the results of the first eye she jumped at the chance to get the second one done.

I did not even know she had a problem until she refused to drive one night to meet me at a function. She had always relied on me to do any night driving for years.

Actually fake soaps (and some true soaps) are in the main, way more damaging to your skin than most hand sanitizers. My wife makes soap with quality oils. I never have a problem no matter how many times I wash. I also hand sanitize quite a bit.

If I wash my hands with hotel soaps multiple times in a day, my hands go red and cracked.

615 Grandson with pneumonia update:
He had an allergic reaction to the anti-biotic. Not severe, thank God, just a rash and swollen lip.
New anti-biotic and benadryl.

Has a 100.1 fever, but I guess that isn't high enough to test for covid yet.

618 I don't feel good about it. They're an enemy and we should do *nothing* help them, but I don't feel good about it (except that it is also apparently tearing through their leadership, which is a good thing).

Well, when their religious/political leaders say the "cure" is to lick religious shrines and rub oil of violets on your bunghole, deaths are going to mount up. Seems the germ theory of disease has completely eluded them.
