41 Awww. Man's best friend greeting his master as he returns home.

Little puppy has a lot to learn, but a dog so tiny can't be expected to have the smoking jacket and slippers at the ready for when the master returns. Give him some time to grow, and I am sure the dog will do his duty.

48 This painting is different from many of Briton Riviere's others. They tend to dramatic or mythological themes with brilliant use of light on stone and metal and animal fur. This one is subdued, with a little bit of humor. The quiet earth tones that dominate the scene are pleasant and relaxing. The man's posture shows the effects of a full day's work but the happy greeting from the puppy can make him smile. Just a lovely image I would happily have on my wall.

We seldom get paintings with an 'adorable' factor but it is nice once in a while.

Thanks CBD.

Thus my bread intake when I was in Ireland. Irish butter is wonderful and should be eaten in excess, but it can't be eaten straight. Irish bread is decent enough, but it is really just a vehicle for butter.

Dogs, though, have no such hang-ups. They'll eat butter straight perfectly happily. But put them outside more or less immediately if they do.

I assume you meant "My Italian girlfriend" or "Main Squeeze" or something because it's an awkward, impersonal phrasing, IMO, unless you have "An Italian" " A German" "A French", etc which gives you a wide social life, although I don't know how you keep that up with teaching school-but I guess school is closed now.

It's about timing. Most of the world looked like this back then. When the photography age came, it actually got worse from this standpoint because although detail and sharpness improved, things became black-and-white.

The world wasn't really colorized until the 1930s, and it wasn't fully colorized until the 1960s.

I voted this morning. It was just me and some faggy looking guy with a man bun. He walks up uses the hand sanitizer. Steps back 2 or 3 feet from the table and asks for a Dem ballot. The judge tells him he has to sign. Uses the hand sanitizer again. Signs. Uses the hand sanitizer again. They tell him you have to go over there to get your ballot. He takes the cover and walks into the room with the voting booths. They stop him. Sir, you only have the cover not the ballot. After he voted he asks the judge, Do you have any hand sanitizer in here?

I asked for a Republican ballot (no point any more they are going to give it to Biden) I get to the booth and look at the ballot and it's a Democrat one. (yes it's Illinois) I went back to the judges and said, I asked for a Republican ballot. They look confused. Oy

The morning thread indicated that the The Dems are pushing for "Italian" healthcare model. I have been in a workplace environment where the lefty CNN/MSNBC news watchers in the office(maximum panic peepo) talk about how Teh Awesome the Italian system (socialized) is and we need to move in that direction. It's clearly a talking point.
My take is that Italy was an open border nightmare with a high-speed plane to Wuhan, that contracted Covid at the maximum rate, then locked the nation down a day late and said if you are old, our policy is "I expect you to die Mr Bondi". Everyone in Italy yelled "YEAH! A strong leader who will make the trains run on time!", and stuck their hands in the velvet handcuffs.

So what is the reality of the "Italian" method that makes all these peepo love them so much? Cause I am pretty sure the I in the failing EU- PIGS is Italy. Is it that the trick to Italy's healthcare is to get Germany to pay for it.....I am having Dejavu.

As I watch my husband work from home, we can at least be happy for the technology that does help some of those in continuing to work and getting a paycheck.

This includes the scientists and engineers needed in times like these.

It's tough on the small businesses and service industry for sure. But some people are able to work uninterrupted. Even some in Sales can work from home.

My bil is in IT for a major store chain in the US and is keeping it going from home.

Home schooling may really get a boost too.

Imagine university students who do not have to go to the university setting and get filled with propaganda day in and day out. The professors can still do damage but it will be somewhat diminished.

267 So what is the reality of the "Italian" method that makes all these peepo love them so much? Cause I am pretty sure the I in the failing EU- PIGS is Italy. Is it that the trick to Italy's healthcare is to get Germany to pay for it.....I am having Dejavu.

Posted by: Cuthbert the Witless at March 17, 2020 10:00 AM (oZ57d)

In 1990 I was stationed in Italy and my mother came to visit. We had a car accident and my mother went to one of the best hospitals in Italy (University of Pisa) and they did an X-ray of her ribs. It was cheap - a US visitor she paid full price which was about $27 at the time.

The X-ray did not show any issues.

She went back home as her rib was still bothering her she took the X-ray to her doctor. He looked at it and said where did you get this? It is so muddy I can't see anything and did a new X-ray. Which was crystal clear and showed the cracked rib.

So that story has some years on it, but that's my opinion of Italian health care.

It's cheap, and you get what you pay for.

Also, briefings got longer. More people from organizations telling the boss what a great job they were doing.

not much, although I don't agree so much with the debt bomb - at least not in a widespread fashion. I think that one thing will be not be difficult to manage with government provided lines of credit, which will be forthcoming soon. You're right about bailouts of state pensions, there will be no choice in an election year. Everyone in government has been waiting for a crisis they can use to do these kinds of things.

But on the other hand, there are *some* companies that are being destroyed by their debt, Oxy is a prime example. The debt they took on to buy Anadarko last year is destroying them, and I think Icahn will have his way and they will be broken up. Or maybe bought out by Chevron, for less than Chevron offered to pay for Anadarko last year.

342 But on the other hand, there are *some* companies
that are being destroyed by their debt, Oxy is a prime example. The
debt they took on to buy Anadarko last year is destroying them, and I
think Icahn will have his way and they will be broken up. Or maybe
bought out by Chevron, for less than Chevron offered to pay for Anadarko
last year.

344 not much, although I don't agree so much with the debt bomb - at least not in a widespread fashion. I think that one thing will be not be difficult to manage with government provided lines of credit, which will be forthcoming soon. You're right about bailouts of state pensions, there will be no choice in an election year. Everyone in government has been waiting for a crisis they can use to do these kinds of things.
Posted by: Tom Servo at March 17, 2020 10:24 AM (V2Yro)
++++++++++++++
I sure do hope not. I know it is possible, but these systems are deeply corrupt and need to go bankrupt. For one, the Feds cannot afford to bail out the state pension funds. There is not enough money to do it. CA alone could trigger a panic if they try it, nevermind the various other systems.

Plus, I really resent having my out-of-state money used to bail out government employees elsewhere. It shouldn't happen, even if it were safe to do so.

So I reckon it is more than possible that the Feds do try to bail it out.

From the local scuttlebutt up here the likely landing spot right now is Tampa. They have tons of cap money, some good young receivers and Gisselle likes Florida more than California. Closer to Brazil too.

Plus the owners of Tampa also own Man United and that would be a big help for Brady's stated plans of taking his brand international.

I can't remember what the horde here recommended, but I asked her for it. She refused, and insisted I take something else that has worse side effects.

Welp, just before we traveled to Botswana, I shared the pills with my husband, and we had horrible headaches and nightmares. Some people we had met at a camp in S. Africa had just returned from Kenya, and were finishing up their round of malaria meds that had no side effects.

At the Johannesburg airport, I asked a pharmacist for something without the side effects, and he sold us something called Melanil, and we were fine. Didn't see a single mosquito, either.

New Orleans is absolutely done. Finished. Since Katrina all the properties were bought up first by rent-seekers, driving prices way out of reach of the average worker, and then by AirBNB - driving out those locals for good and pushing prices to astronomical levels. Now, overnight, tourism has died for a long time, AirBNB rentals are finished and now that you let your workforce become 90% service industry (waiters and waitresses) they're all unemployed. Add to that a huge outbreak of the virus following Mardi Gras.
If there was a way to short a city I'd go all-in against New Orleans. I see no recovery from this.

I use a big TV as my monitor in my home office, because I really need multiple screens to work well and I don;t have room for three on my desk.

Here is what I do, if you find it helpful.
- Start with a 4k TV screen. If you don't have 4k, there is no point in proceeding.
- Use HDMI to connect to your PC. If your PC has only DisplayPort, they are pin-compatible and you can get a DisplayPort-to-HDMI cable pretty cheap on Amazon.
- If using Windows (I have no idea about Apple), disable display scaling (set scale to 100%). This makes everything small, but bear with me to the next step
- Use a piece of software called DisplayFusion. It costs about $30, if I remember correctly. This can divide your screen into virtual monitors using arbitrary dimensions. I have mine configured as a grid of 4x 1080p (normal HD) screens. To make the effect work, I added a couple pixels (literally, two pixels) of padding between the virtual screen. I need to have a little line between things to make the segmentation effect work. DisplayFusion also allows you to set hotkeys to toss windows around between or within the virtual monitors.

This setup has been great for me. My 48" TV is too big to look at so close, but I only look at 25% of it at a time, and it works really well.

492 Here is what I do, if you find it helpful.

Trump has been eradicating ISIS and other terrorists.

I work on a team of about 20 people distributed over 3 offices, spanning 4 time zones. I work from home full time since I am nowhere near a company location. Everyone else works at least 50% at home. Everyone is remote to someone else so there is no real need to go be onsite when 2/3 of your team is somewhere else.

It works great. We meet all the time via Skype and are always in contact on IM.

I havent had an office to go to since GWB was president and never want one again.

I also work some weird hours. Will have 6am meetings to accommodate east coast schedules. But then I head out to play golf at 1pm that afternoon.

The 9 to 5 model with an hour commute model is dead, or should be anyway.

554 But is it art?

[Looks like I took so long the monkey's up. Well, good time to post a long willowed selfie comment.]
____________

ON THIS DAY, IN 1996, I published a webpage for the first time.

Days of ink and staples

At the time, my hobby creative outlet was mini-comics, as inspired by the great cartoonist Matt Faezell, creator of Cynicalman. (mattfeazell.net) Mini-comic: One sheet of typing paper, print both sides, cut, fold, staple = 8-page booklet. It was a format that was a good fit for my simplistic doodles and short-attention-span stories. Sometimes I got fancy and did 16-pagers.

My audience was limited to my handing out or mailing copies to friends, neighbors, and relatives (most of whom were polite enough not to say anything about them). I did have a 'display' at ChicagoCon, once - a fellow in the independent publishers area let me have a corner of his table. Other than that, well, even with small 'press runs,' I have a whole big bunch of copies left, here in this shoebox.

WWWOW! signal

I thought, this new web thing might be a good place to advertise my little comics. I put up a list. I even created a VRML 3D old-fash-looking comics 'spinner' to display them. (Alas, poor old VRML, we hardly knew ye.) I had fun, anyway.

Then I decided to put up a sample.

I took the original artwork on one mini-comic, scanned it with my 300dpi hand-held grayscale scanner, and created the GIFs (hadn't yet learned about .PNG) using good old Deluxe Paint IIe. Colored in with a sixteen-color palette. (linked in nic)

The moment that full-color "sample" page was uploaded, it hit me. Whoa! This -- the wwweb -- was the new framework for everything. Print, pix, audio, video, 3D-VR, all in one system. "Print is dead." No more trips to the photocopy place, no more collating, cutting, folding, stapling. No mailing lists or stamps or wrappers! I went out of the self-print-publishing business and proceeded to scan and color and upload all my comics. Then made new ones.

I addressed the copyright and income issues in a brief, early attempt at a daily comic, Mind Fuel. I realized there was no protection from data theft, no paywall that couldn't be breached or reached-around (!). It's been amusing, over the subsequent two dozen decades, to watch 'real' publishers try to deal with matters I figured out immediately. (Even before the web there was CompuServe, which had its limits, but still taught me about the universal accessibility of web stuff.)

The PayPal donation button does work.

THE BEST IS STILL AHEAD

Twenty-four years. More than twelve hundred webworks - toons, tunes, pomes and stories, doodles and vids.

The old mindfulwebworks.com website has not had as much new stuff in recent years as in the past, as personal and computer problems have been seriously thwarting me. Somehow I, also, am twenty-four years older. I still have many short and tall tales to tell. Did you see the one about the Beast with Four Heads?

I do hope to spruce the place up a bit before the big 25 next year.

561 After this shit storm is over lots of people will realize driving into work every day is stupid. This will revolutionize work with millions of people working from home on a more permanent basis.

If it can be done from home it can be done from India or by an algorithm. There would be nothing holding a company together without people coming in.

562 Why is it that the "health experts" we're currently listening to seem to discount the economic wreckage their plans create and the success of their plans relies on draconian authoritarian measures implemented upon a pliable and scared populous?

I'm not saying Covid19 isn't serious, especially to certain demographics. That demographic is well represented here on this blog. If we're honest we admit we're not health experts (otherwise we'd be expounding on twitter 90x ph) and are uncertain about what the right thing to do is, so the population most likely to resist what is essentially tyranny is hesitant to stop it for fear of being culled if we're wrong.

I'd say "they", whoever they are, have found an awesome crisis and they won't let it go to waste. This already has cratered the economy, the effects are not reversible, so recession/depression here we come.
We've once again shown through actions and not words on the internet that we'll do as we're told, so the totalitarians are having their day putting folks to the test and seeing no resistance.

I dunno what point I'm trying to make other than it feels like the crisis, whether manufactured or not, is a milestone the country is going through and it won't be the same or better on the other side.

Plus it's a small place that you can completely see and enjoy in a day or so. My French friend found us a room on the island itself so that was very cool as everyone else had to trek back across the causeway as darkness fell. I hope you're able to go.

569 What kills the joy of working remotely are conference calls, as mentioned in posts above. It will be interesting to hear the horror stories from our national work-from-home experiment. My favorite from back in the day was a guy who put the phone mike up by his nose and so everyone can listen to Darth Vader breathing, and made them shout so their voice was louder than his nose.
