Munkacsy Relaxing.jpg

Relaxing Lady
Mihaly Munkacsy

From commenter "runner" comes a new artist, at least for me and him! I couldn't find a good copy of the one he sent along, but Mr. Munckacsy is an accomplished artist, so the one above should work, but take a look at runner's link. The subject is marvelous!

This an interesting painting by an artist I never heard of, but who is world famous in Hungary - Mihaly Munkacsy (good bio on wiki). I believe the title is "MOZART UTOLSÓ PILLANATAI – HALÁLA" , roughly translated as "Mozart's Last Moments - Death." I saw another title for it - "Mozart Conducts Requiem on Death Bed". Which I find more interesting.

I don't think I'd hang this one. Not sure why. Nothing in it really speaks to me. I don't hate it by any means, is definitely art, but it just sort of does nothing for me.

89 Interesting painting. I like the horizontal lady and chaise against the other elements that are vertical. Also, the colors are restful, nothing glaring. The 'sorta' lack of detail goes along with the soft, restful aspects of the piece. Munkacsy is able to combine the various elements to provide an overall effect. The thing, as the title says, is relaxing. I haven't had a chaise lounge for many years but recall they were great for reading and napping.

For some reason this scene looks like something Andrew Wyeth might have painted. Not the technique but the composition.

119 This is interesting. Even more interesting in the large pic.

The fabric, wall hanging, her dress, the detailed lamp. (Painter really got into that lamp!) The interplay of horizontal (mainly the girl), vertical draping, and lampshade diagonals (something something). Intricate.

However, of the girl we see her face - barely a cheek - and a hand, a foot (I think that's what that is). She's practically an afterthought, a minor character in her own painting. Still life in the ol' girl.

The invading army of giant alien spider-monsters outside the window was a nice touch.

There was a BBC series a few years back called The 1900 House, where a modern family moved into a restored flat and had to live just as a family in London in 1900 would. The mother and daughter both had to wear corsets and said that they were surprised how comfortable they were and how quickly you got used to them.

I do love those fashion videos; they make me wish I could sew, because I would dress like a man from the 'teens, myself. Edwardian fashion, though I love it, is a little too "costumey" for modern wear (and a man can't get away with it as much as a lady can). It also brings to mind a comment by Beau Brummell - when told about a man who was so well dressed that people stopped in the street to look at him, Brummell replied, "Then he was not well dressed."

I would like to be able to wear plus-fours, myself.

I still firmly believe that replacing Biden with Cuomo will do massive damage to the Democratic Party.

I mean, there's Biden leaving Bernie in the dust in terms of delegates, and then there's Biden winning most of the delegates, dropping out of the race, and the party passing over the guy who got the second most delegates for someone who didn't even run in the primary.

Been saying it for 2 days now - this is an inside operation and classic from the dem playbook. Maybe the rest of the DNC isn't on board, but they will be after a few more meetings. Then the MFM gets the marching orders. They can act all shocked, don't lose face for putting an alzheimer's patient on the stage, and at worst it's a brokered convention.

I don't think they can move ahead just yet until Bernie is fully out of the picture. He's probably out after visiting a few more open houses in Malibu or Aspen.

Without short-selling, there is no way to make money if the market goes down - and no way to get those price signals.

Naked shorting (where you don't necessarily possess the shares you're selling, at least not yet) is a different matter but a legitimate short of "borrow shares, sell shares, buy back shares, return shares" is not that. Naked shorting should be a crime.

I really don't see Cuomo coming off as presidential with his daily pressers--he's always whining and complaining about the Feds not doing enough--plus NY is really bad and fumbled the ball at the very start.

Also, he's been giving a lot of credit to Trump--so how can he turn on a dime? He'd come off s a backstabber.

And does he help the Democrats get the states they NEED to beat Trump?

Finally, he has LOTS of skeletons in his closet--as well as a name with too many vowels...

379 This bill is a POS and it does little to nothing to address the problems created for the citizen by Government.

Posted by: garrett at March 27, 2020 10:36 AM (Bfj2M)

The bill may be a POS, but without it our markets collapse, our economy collapses, our pensions collapse, and then our society collapses. This is why I put effort in past days into trying to show how far out we are on the knife's edge right now. We have a very, very narrow pathway to survival as a nation, and as a society. This bill is a downpayment on what must be done; if Trump can get things starting to reopen after Easter, we may not have to double it. (and of course it is not the Virus that is destroying us, that will pass - it is these shutdowns and what we are doing to ourselves that is madness)

We're out of time, and out of options. Trump gets it, as does everyone else close to him.

The question was whether they would have to roll call it. The preference all week has been to avoid a roll call in order to let members of the House stay home instead of putting themselves and others at risk by having to come back to DC, since the House was in recess last week and has remained that way until today. Thus, the desire for a voice vote, and people can still yell "No!"

What this bill is doing is NOT "restoring" the economy, it is buying us about 30 days of survival. All of the fundamentals are still horrible at the moment, but now we've got a little bit of time to work with.

I just see that borrowing a stock on credit to short allows for panic dips. It feeds upon itself . Maybe there should be some type of limit / stop gap. Admittedly I'm out of my pay grade when discussing the intricacies of the market . I just know it's full of loopholes created to get around attempts to regulate it.

Don't wait, and if you get a Hawaiian judge restraining order tell the Chief Justice John Roberts personally you will ignore it if he doesn't override it immediately but that you will abide by the SC's final ruling.

The SC can't act fast enough, I think, to rule a de facto line item veto unconstitutional before all the money goes to covid purposes.

Seems to me now would be a great time to reopen that discussion.

Cross out everything not covid related and spend the money on those things.

Don't
wait, and if you get a Hawaiian judge restraining order tell the Chief
Justice John Roberts personally you will ignore it if he doesn't
override it immediately but that you will abide by the SC's final

612 Fun fact about Marilu Henner: she supposedly has eidetic memory, which in her case allows her to recall the memory of whatever she did in the past, at will. If you asked her what she was doing on 4 Oct 1983, for instance, she'll be able to tell you.

I would believe it.

I remember watching the Republican National Convention on CNN - the one where McCain was the nominee. Palin made her speech from the podium, and the CNN cameraman tried to make her look bad by filming her from behind, showing her reading from the teleprompter.

The only problem was, the speech wasn't scrolling, probably because of a technical difficulty. It didn't stop her from continuing with her speech, seemingly from memory.

The camera cut away from her pretty quickly after that.

This.

Republicans are going to be excoriated over this, even if they had nothing to do with the delay.

If we're going to get the blame, might as well stand on principle for a moment or two.

Trump's smart, which is why he'll sign it.

The Overton Window currently is at "you must be seen to be DOING SOMETHING about this". That's why his poll numbers are good. If he plays any games with it after slamming Pelosi for playing games with it, Biden wins in a landslide.

Yep, the smart thing to do would be to put out the candidate(s) you intend to run in 2024 to give them some name recognition. Sortof how Obama got his introduction to the nation at the Convention in 2004. That was his springboard to run in 2008.

Cuomo-Whitmer seems to be what they are setting up right now.
