FiveThirtyEight: There's Now a 64% Chance the Democrat Convention Ends With No One Having a Majority of Delegates

Nate Silver pointed out a mistake I was making: "No majority" isn't the same thing as a contested convention/brokered convention. He says that even if no one gets the majority of delegates from primary states, candidates can drop out and urge their own delegates to vote for a candidate. Buttigieg, for example, could urge his delegates to vote for Biden.

So even with no one having won a majority of delegates, someone could still get a majority on the first ballot.

Even if that's the case, a Sanders loss due to (alleged) moderates colluding against him would spark a lot of outrage, and maybe cause some cities to burn.

As one of Bernie Sanders' staffers promised.

More details here.

As to who is most likely to win a plurality of delegates, 538 figures Sanders is 57% likely to take home more votes than anyone else and Biden is 41% likely.

Meanwhile, Micro Bloomberg is spending a lot of money, but he's not buying any competence.

Do you see the problem? With NH?

That looks vaguely like NH, only... upside down.

92 A wild card here is the effect of the Coronavirus and its spread throughout the United States.

Two deep staters who certainly did their part to screw us over again are William Walters and Nancy Messonier. And just who are William Walters and Nancy Messonier you may ask?

Well, William Walters is the State Department hack who signed off on bringing the folks quarantined on that Japanese cruise ship back onto American soil without the knowledge of either the President or Secretary of State, even though Trump had been told that wouldn't happen.

His stated rationale was that these good people were mere evacuees, and as such, he simply followed long-standing protocols for bringing them back home. Went on TV bragging about it in fact. Were they evacuees, and did we follow protocols? "The answer to both those questions is yes," quoth he. Apparently letting Trump and Pompeo know wasn't part of the protocol. Heckuva job Walt!

And Nancy Messonier? Well, she's the CDC chick who went on TV early on and pronounced it was only a matter of when, not if, the virus would come here, and that it was bound to spread big time because of a lack of testing kits and relevant policies in place for an infectious disease outbreak.

Remember the folks getting of the ship saying they were shocked to encounter health officials not wearing appropriate clothing and lacking testing kits? Yeah, that's Nancy's work.

And to top it off, any guess who this chick is in addition to being a highly placed but utterly incompetent (yet nonetheless chatty before the cameras) CDC official? Well, she's Rod Rosenstein's friggin sister. Yeah.

Blood (and now two deaths) on their hands? Sure. But do they care? Not one whit so long as they can try to help pin this situation on Trump.

121 Politico, the left wing news outlet, has a pretty good story out explaining why Buttigieg dropped out suddenly. It's very believable, and I assume they have a lot of sources inside Butti's campaign that fed them the info.

Butty had put together and impressive amount of money, but he spent almost ALL of it on Iowa and New Hampshire, to try to make a big splash early. Whatever he had left he spent on South Carolina, and he was hoping that somehow his early wins would give him name recognition and boost his later performances, even though anyone with sense said, you cannot win any minority votes with your gay little white boy act.

And then he only got 3% of the Black Vote in South Carolina, he had spent nothing at all on any of the other Super Tuesday states, and his campaign was totally broke. If he had stayed in, he wasn't getting out of the single digits on Super Tuesday, and with no money, he was going to have to lay off all of his staff. He could have waited til Wednesday, but there was no point. He was finished, and everyone in his campaign knew it.

139 Why I'm voting for Bernie:

1. Trump will absolutely OWN him.

2. The more legit his claim to the nomination, the bigger the fallout when they take it away from him.

3. If he wins the nom, it forces the democrats to finally come out and openly support the ideas they've been playing footsie with since the 60's and denying when confronted. We will finally get to have an honest conversation about where we are headed as a nation.

4. It will cause a real and devastating rift in the seemingly unbreakable party unity of the democrats.

184 >Are there people around who still think Joe Biden is capable of coherent thought?
Posted by: Northernlurker

let me say this about that
I know there's been a lot of comedy here and at other sites about Joe's apparent mental decline. But I'm a guy who watched his mother's slow decline thru dementia and eventually Alzheimer's and let me tell you, it is a sad thing to watch. The worst part is that at the beginning, with the diagnosis, the person knows it is beginning to happen to them and they are often terrified and distraught. And there's nothing you can do for them along those lines. You can only comfort them as best you can.

As for Joe Biden, I don't know what his circumstances are- if he's actually ill or just a clumsy, inept public speaker. But I hope his family does what they can for him if it's the former.

I don't really have a point here- just sounding off I guess.

Krugman is a government-power guy and wants people bound to the state like a horse is to a plow. His hatred of Trump is transactional. His hatred of a free and prosperous people is existential.

Yeah, I have been wondering for a while about why no one in his family loves him enough to get him out of the spotlight as his brain diminishes.

I suppose we laugh at it because Biden was such a stupid, cruel, power-hungry, corrupt SOB for decades. If even his own family is more interested in what they squeeze out of a presidential run than his well-being, then they themselves are making him available for this derision/sad spectacle.
The other question is: Why is his party not interveneing? Think it's likely because he is their alleged "moderate" through which they plan to get a radical VP into close proximity to the oval office. They are usingg him, too.

I don't want to enable his family's or his party's use/abuse of him by keeping mention of his mental capacity off-limits, though.

Krugman is a government-power guy and wants people bound to the state like a horse is to a plow. His hatred of Trump is transactional. His hatred of a free and prosperous people is existential.

The market is up right now, but it's still early days.

I did a quick check, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average still is up over 10% from the lows in the 'crash' of December 2018. The DJIA is up over 35% from the day that DJT won the election.

The big thing is that the Dow tested the lows of Aug 2019, basically held (down c.70 pts below that Aug level), stayed well above the lows of May 2019, and is bouncing up from there.

Bottom line (and the technical analysts in the Horde can weigh in on this), is that we could very well have seen the worst for now. We can certainly test these levels once more between now and Election Day, but the sky isn't set to fall anytime soon, IMHO.

Bloomberg, who's running as a Democrat, while Trump has 90+% approval from Republicans.

No, a Bloomberg 3rd party run will attract deadenders like Bill Kristol, the sort of Republicans that voted for Egg McMuffin, and no more. In terms of Democrats, he'll pull far more.

Not enough to win electors, but enough to ensure that any state that would otherwise be remotely close goes to Trump.

Posted by: EveR at March 02, 2020 01:05 PM (ZZDMQ)

327 All joking aside, why would Mayor Pete drop out now? Something doesn't add up. He won a state, has delegates, wasn't doing badly, and then suddenly he suspends his campaign over a "cold"?? Then he drops out?

Did some ghastly information come out that he is trying to avoid getting out? Did he get pressured out of the race? Will he buy a new house courtesy Gloomberg's money?

What happened?
Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at March 02, 2020 12:30 PM (KZzsI)

The non conspiracy answer would be that with Bloomberg taking his "non senile Biden" role, and his front loaded organization not translating into a grass roots surge in NV and SC, he sees little hope and would just as soon pocket the money everyone was giving him in these last months for future political moves than burn it all now.

A bribe by someone only adds a little nudge to this analysis.

That's a safe bet, esp with the right push:

Sanders has already had a severe heart attack. Another one will surprise no one. The Scalia-Treatment, perhaps?

Bloomberg better have his own food tasters and trusted Praetorian Guard. At 78...well, again any type of death would surprise no one.

The Dems do have this delusion that there is an anti-Trump faction out there - even they don't think the ones on TV belong to it. They just assume that another option will spilt off tons of support without much effort. Not a fan, personally, of the rigid primaries as some states get locked out of having any impact. But I'll say this about Iowa. It sure seems like it winnows out candidates pretty well. The remnants of the contacts and responses made that day resonate immediately into the next primary. That's an important function.

I'm fascinated watching Bloomberg, who looks like at any moment he's going to flick out his tongue and nail a passing fly. He's the spear answer to Obama's flack who loved her some Mao and apparently had tardive dyskinesia.

443 Knowing the laws he's helped pass, I wouldn't be surprised if he does it in public too.

I had the same thought as I typed that. "In private" ... "I hope."

444 This is interesting:

after the disastrous 1968 convention, the DNC created a blue ribbon commission to investigate what went wrong and why they were such fuck-ups

446 Even Hunter's paintings blow.

Dude doesn't even have a job but he's living in Cali in a $12k/mo.
rental with a Porshe in the driveway and a pool house converted into an
art studio, and all the NYT Mag can talk about is how calm and relaxed
he is now that he has finally come out of the closet and confessed he's
an artist?! Vomitous reading at best.

Maybe this is another money laundering technique. Instead of printing and selling books, you just sell some crappy paintings for millions.

It's curious about Bloomberg. I wasn't hostile to him due to his nanny-statism - at least in a visceral sense. I just thought he was as politically obnoxious as any textbook socialism for me/capitalism for thee pol. But his deep animus to those outside his bubble which is to say almost all of America is nauseating. I wasn't aware of just how nasty he was, but the guy is deplorable and not in the Tea Party way.

He's poison.

Klobuchar ends Democratic presidential bid, set to endorse Biden

Posted by: MachiasPrivateer at March 02, 2020 01:47 PM (EMi53)

449 Mayor Pete agreed to pull out because the DNC agreed to reach-around back to him at a contested convention...

He's young. He's been 'groomed'. He's a red-diaper baby like Bernie...

Biden is clearly not-fit, but he's the only control they have over the nomination process.

Mini-Mike and his jumbo sized pac will support Pete.

And all the proper Marxist "Intellectuals" will confirm to Bernie that Mayor Pete is a true believer and is worthy of being supported. Plus Bernie gets to keep his grift, not do the heavy lifting, and Mike will pay-off Bernie's consultants

450 It occurred to me the other day that the difference between Chelsea and Hunter is that Chelsea doesn't have a taste for coke and indiscriminate sex, as far as we know. She also, apparently, does as she is told.

Otherwise, she is a talentless, uninspired, tool of her parents.
