That's the thing - they don't have any "real" candidates right now. They might be able to get some of their current crop of governors into the race in 2024. But Obama and Clinton did their level best to get rid of any possible threats.
One of the things that got commented on a lot in 2016 was that the Dems didn't really have any young up-and-comers.

That is a thin steak. I think by the time you are done searing it on both sides (about 2.5 minutes per side, assuming your grill gets hot enough), it will be done. Then all you will have to do it take it off, cover it with aluminum foil, and let it rest for five minutes. Unless you like it done to the consistency of shoe leather, in which case leave it on indirect heat (i.e. not over an open flame) for another minute or so before taking it off and resting it.

we used to get them with no freaking bathroom!. I don't know if they still have those but I think some of the really old hotels still have that "feature".
I say put the dog with a friend or sitter and just do it. If you really want to go somewhere, there are always reasons not to. Those reasons can be good ones at times but they will always be there. My point is if it is something you really want to do, better to just do it.

We've had hurricane data for the US mainland since the 1850's. There has been no change in either the number of or severity of hurricanes over that period.
Hurricanes do more damage now, because the coasts are more developed - a hurricane hitting Florida in 1910 would have done little damage.
Two major hurricanes hit New England within a ten-day period in 1954. If that happened today, this would be cited as proof-positive of global warming.

The end of that debate was embarrassing. Someone was hell bent on that motto question and they would not let it go. The candidates didn't like it and thought it was dumb imo. Some committee came up with that one I bet.

I should add that while you are grilling/searing, watch out for flare ups. Hot spots or fat dripping in the wrong place can burn your instead of searing it. If that happens, just move the steak away from the flames and keep cooking for the remaining time. Some people keep a small spray bottle of water handy to put out the flames on these occasions as well.

I am so fucking glad that I was a boy back when being a boy was the fucking coolest thing ever.
We also played tackle football with no pads or helmets, and baseball games that basically lasted most of the spring, before first bell, lunchtime, and sometimes after school. I think the final score was 912 to 806. We even played a couple of innings while a carpet store was burning down across the street. Not even kidding.
Me and Missus Mahon did our best to raise our sons old school. turns out we were the cool parents.

Depending on if this thing turns out badly or not, there might not be enough supplies to stockpile. I read an article the other day that talked about how the company 3M - which makes masks that will protect against the virus - has massively ramped up production to fill the need. They've expanded shifts on their existing production lines, and have started new short-term production lines. All this because as things currently stand, there simply aren't enough masks for the projected demand.

Not necessarily. Most supermarkets operate full service butcher counters in addition to the pre-cut stuff that they put out in the packages. That means you can go up and ask you to cut them a steak to your desired thickness. Or two or three, if they offer BOGO deals or value-pack pricing. You can always wrap them in cling wrap individually at home and freeze the one(s) you aren't going to cook immediately.
In the case of a boneless NY strip, a steak 1.25" to 1.5" thick will be around 1 to 1.4 lbs. At least in my area, if you watch for sales, you can still get those for around $8 per lb. Ribeyes fall into the same general category.
That will be enough for my wife and I to split one for dinner, or if I am eating alone, it leave leftovers for steak and eggs or a steak sandwich the next day. Or I suppose you cut cut the individual steaks in half and only grill half and save the rest for the next night.
Anyway, not that much more expensive than what you just bought, at least per serving.

They called them Snaps around here. All actual fun fireworks have been banned in Oregon so it was the bangiest you could get legally. :/
What's hilarious is that the cops just ignore all the skyrockets and mortars and M80s and stuff going off every 4th. The only time they get involved is if someone goes overboard, lights some place on fire, or someone gets a hand blown off or something.

agreed. Trump should a do what it takes to stop this. and B, combat this Trump blaming. You are right. A hell of a lot of Americans believe by default that the answer to everything is more government. The Dems showed this tonight. Even when they agreed with some things Trump did, they said they would have done it differently and with more government.
Where are the Repubs explaining to people that we don't want to be France where the federal government is the largest employer? Where is the push back in the schools, churches, and communities?
And Bush was bashed over Katrina but he DID win a second term. That is the thing. I would take a Trump second term over anything at this point. My point is it could be worse. I said this weeks ago and got a bit up pushback. For sure the left sees the Corona virus as an opportunity and it is a threat to Trump's presidency. It is not exactly a positive occurrence.
And again, just like I said weeks ago when I predicted the danger to the presidency. I am only talking about the political fallout. I am not making light of the human loss. We need to stop this thing now. But humans being humans, will try to make political hay out of this to feather their own nest.

Taped primed .38 special brass to the muzzle of the Crossman 760, primer right over the bore.
Didn't hurt the brass on the firing side, but the BB sure did ruin the primer pocket itself.
Made a hella effective noisemaker though!

New Jersey law forbade any type of fireworks except snakes, sparklers, and caps. Why the hell they let us little kids have sparklers is beyond me. Those things are hot, hot, HOT!!!
My father worked for Cities Service on the Turnpike so he was friends with a lot of the State Troopers. The Staties would confiscate illegal fireworks coming up from Maryland, then share them with all their buddies.

Depending on overall costs and the speed of my fabrication skills, there may be a 1.5 in. bore, 1/2 scale replica of a Civil War Six Pounder (Napoleon Cannon), set up at the same site as the M-1919 Browning.
I would go to build the full-scale (3.3 in. bore) version, but haven't the space to store such a beast.
Just the 1.5 in. bore fires an 11.6 oz. lead ball.
I think Mr. Tree Stump in the firing pit will be in for another terrible, rotten, horrible, miserable day?

They would use carbide to run lamps for houses and buildings, for those places where they didn't have "town gas"
it gave a nice bright light and you could set it up so the carbon floaties wouldn't fly around. I think Lincoln's white house used that system.
I know the local Masonic lodge had an acetylene generator at one point - back before electrification here, it supposedly created a bubble of gas and went POP during a meeting covering everyone with soot.
(the hydraulic press channel was playing with soap bubbles filled with acetylene gas at one point. Not safe)

Cavers used those for a long time after regular miners had stopped. They were utterly reliable, as long as you had carbide and a little bit of water (which you almost always did in caves, even if you'd used up/lost what you had with you).
I think they mostly use LED lights nowadays.

I have an actual acetylene generator for making welding gas. But it's pretty badly corroded.
My carbide came from the oil field. It used to be practice for mud loggers to put a few ounces of carbide in a Kleenex, and throw it into the drill pipe in the slips when the roughnecks were making the stab on a connection. Created a "bubble" of acetylene that could be seen on the gas detector or chromatograph as it came around. The "down" time for the mud through the drill pipe can be precisely calculated, since the drill string internal volumes are all known, and practically speaking, down time amounts to a small fraction of round trip time for the mud, and can often be disregarded. "Up" time for the mud can also be so calculated, assuming gauge hole. But wellbores can often wash out to vastly oversize in some formations, causing round trip circulation time to increase greatly. Since cuttings samples, and naturally-occurring gas events are depth-correlated by bottom-up circulation time, it's important to be able to check that. Hence, the carbide check, which was cheap, easy, and reliable.
But carbide got deemed to be "hazardous goods" for us to transport, and that, combined with the ever-increasing use of oil-based mud, caused the mud-logging companies to abandon the use of it. So I wound up with the stock from 2 companies.

Growing up, I had the twin Fanner Fifty cap gun rig. One day, Mother took my Big Sister and I too the movies and the second feature was "The Charge at Feather River" a 3-D oat-burner. So, after a substantial bit if whining and negotiating, I was allowed to take my guns to the movie but I had to submit to a body cavity search for any rolls of caps. Fortunately, my mother's technique had yet to fully develop.
After the main feature concluded, I begged off to the men's room wherein I loaded those two beauties and then casually returned to my seat next to my mother. The cowboy movie was great, especially the climatic scene when the Indians (in those days) charged the cowboys. Well, with the 3-D and all the other excitement on the screen, no real buckaroo could sit back and not try to protect the two most important females in his still short life.
I probably only got 10 or 15 rounds of before Mother regained control but I knew that there would be more control when we got home. So, later that evening she came into my room with that special gleam inner eye that was the precursor to "You Father's home and he wants to talk to you in the living room.
I go to the living room and when Mother left, my Father began his in-terror-gation. "Mother tell me she took you to the movies this afternoon." "Yes." And you took your cap guns." "Yes." "And you took caps she told you not to take." "Yes." "And you shot off those caps during the movie." "Yes."

it is a good reason to quit if you can or want to. I remember years ago one of those "improve yourself" speakers advised people to write down all the things they hated about their particular bad habit. It was a way to convince yourself to quit.
I am not shaming anyone here or calling anyone out. We all go our own way. That is my motto of if CBS ever wants to know my true motto. But I always found cigarette smoking in particular to be gross. The smell on the clothes, the stamped out butt. And who would chose to kiss a girl who smoked even though they themselves smoked?
But cigarettes were so much a part of our culture for so long that a lot of the stigma did not materialize in real life. There was also the cool factor and that so many used them.
What always stood out to me was that dipping and chewing was always considered to be more disgusting, unless you were in a few particular locales in the south or west. I never got that as really the only issue with dipping was seeing that gross bottle and the spitting.
My point is, if there is one, that it is interesting what particular cultures find offensive and what they accept as normal. I now see why dipping offends many. It is not when you do it, but when you see others, I can understand it. I still say smoking is worse since it covers your clothes and all. Neither are particularly good ideas of course but that is not what i am talking about. For sure smoking has historically been more accepted by a larger part of our society for many decades.

every neighborhood is different for sure. I only learned of bodegas from Bill Burr comedy reactions. To me going to a business is cheating but again, every neighborhood is different.
I am not advocating for kids to run wild with no supervision. But there is a way parent's used to do it. They watched the little kids and gave the older kids more freedom. Even if we were not completely free, we felt that we were.
There were always lessons on Halloween such as avoiding big kids, dark houses, etc. The parents inspected the candy though that was largely based on myth. But what i wonder about is how kids grow up these days and miss out on so many chances of freedom. The one think I will never have to say is my parents helicoptered me. oh they cared, they cared big time, but they knew treating a kid as a house cat for life would not help them in the end.

I don't have an answer for that. I was talking Halloween and really creating more world wise kids. I don't know if child abductions are up. I simply do not have that information. I only know that we are creating kids and young adults who have been helicoptered. What do they do when they go to college? We are seeing what they are doing.
I am with you Rick Z. The world today is darker and less friendly imo. What I don't know is if it is the chicken or the egg. What I don't know is if we are less kind so we should be more suspicious, or we are less kind because we are more suspicious.
I know in my day we heard all kinds of horror stories. But to give up freedom was not possible. It was a different era. Things change.
I recall when if your parents drove you to school, you were in deep shit. You missed the bus, were sick or something. Now they drive them to school and it causes a daily mash up.
My fear is the answer to everything is "you can't do that these days". What bothers me is who exactly decided this. Are not all Trump voters the antidote to the idea "you can't do this these days?".
I get protecting your kids. What I don't get is failing to prepare them for the real world. This reminds me of an academic debate about IRA's. The argument was it was true that you could be too risky and fail to reach your retirement goals. But the counter argument was that one could be too conservative and they also would fail to reach their retirement goals.
For sure protect your kids. Talk to them, lead them. But if you don't allow them to experience the world and explore it a bit, you are doing them no favors. I understand this is complex and I don't have the answers. I only know I am so grateful for the childhood I had. I read about helicopter kids and and the net today and really feel sorry for them. It is great that people can adapt, They are likely better at that than am I.

i am not going to say where I grew up though it is not that hard to figure out. What shocks me is how the culture changed so quickly for the worse. Where I grew up was not classical conservative locale. But people were different back then, they were almost normals. We acted as normals as they were our leaders back then. It is freaking shocking what has come of some many places. I am not talking hard core conservative locales, I am talking mainstream places.
We go on about it but still if you look back it is breathtaking. I still can't believe what has come of this country. I still can't believe the ground we have given up. We talk about it and fire off our one liners. But when you really think about it over the years, it is very scary.

I remember a book series I read that had a sort of cult of people who wanted to kill off everyone else in the world, so they could be the only ones to enjoy the majesty of nature in an untrammeled or polluted Earth.
This resonated more after that 'Life after People' TV show that was on History Channel a while back.
In the book series, it did not work out too well for the people, as they were just useful pawns.

I only show this to show how far our nation has gone awry. The thing that really gets me is when people say "you can't do that these days". I really hate that. It is true but it is a self fulfilling prophecy. If everyone says "you can't do that these days, then you can't do that these days" Statement made and reality is born.
I grew up in a very moderate political locale. It was R at one point but we are talking Gerald Ford type Rs. It soon became left leaning but not this left. No one could have imagined this Left!
So I was in a high school English class and the assignment was to write the most descriptive essay you could. The essay was graded on your ability to describe the scene in detail. That was the assignment.
I chose to write about a CIA sniper taking out Daniel Ortega during the Sandinista regime. The point is I got an A. I was expressing myself during a particular time and the most likely liberal teacher game me an A. What would happen today? Would I have been sent for counseling? Would they have called my parents in? In that day that would havoe be unimaginable. But today, we would say it would be a smart move. Better safe than sorry.
I dont' know if Daniel Ortega lives today or does not. Nor do I care. I was given an assignment and killed it. I got an A in a liberal locale. The only reason I mention this is there was a time when liberals and normals could interact as people. I pushed the boundaries I guess but we didn't have boundaries back then. I feel sorry for people today that have to hide all the time just to get along.

Having recently cared for a FIL with memory issues I'm pretty sure the gender roles are reversed here. Every day I visited him female patients were getting busy or trying to. i am not discounting that. I promise you i know that many righties came from California. it is the land of Nixon, Reagan, Bomber Bob Dornan et al.
But if Texas needs Californian transplants to save the state from Beto, then isn't this whole thing just a delaying action? What Texas got wrong was immigration, the schools, out of control mega cities, and begging Californios to move in. People can say Texas will vote R and that will work right up until it doesn't. Like VA, the state has been moving left for years, that is a fact.
A few states like TN, MO, KY and some others have been moving right. Texas has NOT been moving right. I wish it were different and if I have it wrong please set me straight.
My issues with Texas is they have no control over their cities at all. Their state legislature is based in hippy zone. Dallas, Houston and for sure San Anantonio have gone far left, to the crazy Commiefornia hard left.
I wish I had an answer because if we lose Tejas it is over. Maybe the gov should focus on schooling. I wish I had an answer. Sure Tejas is full of rocck ribbed conservatives. But guess what. So is Virginia, so is PA, and even MD. In the end it is a numbers game. Texas today does not give us the warm fuzzies it dies 20 years ago.

No immigrant who puts of dry wall or works construction works for minimum wage. These people have too much pride and skills to be stuck in minimum wage.

why does this remind me of when the Roman Empire devolved into the Dark Ages? Art commisions? No advancements were computers, space exploration, major drugs et al. i am sorry, Siri is not an scientific advancement. WE had the same thing, it was called typing on a keypad.
Hey, if young people can exploit stupidity than they should go for it. Never let politics get in the way of business. i have have followed beyond meat since the day it went public. i owned it for a short time but could never hold on.
The point is you have to be able to divorce yourself from what should be and from what is. I am not pushing Beyond Meat. I would not touch it with a ten foot pole. But even though I think the fake meat eaters are crazy, they still keep doing it.
In the end you have to be comfortable what you invest in. Warren Buffett would never invest in tech until he became best buds with Bill Gates. It did not hurt that he was already a multi billionaire and considered the greatest investor in history. But now he is in on tech because, he likes Bill Gates.

they can't challenge her. That is their whole thing. You deny she was ruined, you break the whole thing down. The thing I don't get is why that should make her president. Should not she be spending her time focusing on others who faced the same discrimination? Why don't they get to be president?
She never said that she was fired, she was coy that way. Was she planning to teach the next semester? What is this really about? Did she want them to hold her over for a semester? Someone should ask but they wont. They only know a man did her wrong for some reason. But we can't know why or what.

I think I hit the wall on this stuff yesterday as more media hype.
Bad in China, sure, and bad for the same groups the flu is bad for (the old and the compromised), but not a lethal worldwide plague.

It's always a bad idea to be overly confident, particularly when the danger is so great.
If not this time, and the odds are still it won't be, eventually a Red will be president; the nation has been populated by tense of millions of Marx-friendly Third Worlders. At that point, everyone has to make up their mind how to react. It's hardly something to relish but something to expect.
