Intermediate Problem - Black To Play (1104)

Hint: A quick back-rank mate is not possible in this position

Beginner Problem - Black To Play

20200222 - Problem 1.jpg
4k3/1p3pp1/p1r1p3/P3Pn1p/3N1q2/1P5P/6K1/1Q1RB3 b - - 0 1

1...Ne3+
2.Kh1 Qf1+
3.Kh2 Qg2#

or if 2.Kg1 then Qf1+ 3.Kh2 Qg2#

Intermediate Problem - Black To Play

20200222 - Problem 2.jpg
r5k1/3R3p/6pP/1p6/8/1PP4R/P4rP1/K7 b - - 0 1

1...Rfxa2+
2. Kb1 Ra1+
3. Kc2

Not 3.Kb2 because then 3...R8a2#

3...R8a2+
4.Kd3 Rd1+
5.Ke4 Rxd7 and wins

Advanced Problem - White To Play

20200222 - Problem 3.jpg
r2qnrk1/pp4b1/2npb1p1/2pN1pP1/4P2Q/8/PPP1BP2/R1B1K1NR w KQ f6 0 1

The win is a forced mate, but it's a ways out:

1.Qh7+ Kf7
2.Qxg6+ Kxg6

not 2...Kg8 because 3.Qh7+ Kf7 4.Bh5#. Black has to take the queen.

3.Bh5+ Kh7
4.Bf7+ Bh6
5.g6+!

Do not be tempted by 5.Rxh6+ Kg7 6.Bxe6 fxe4 7.Be3 Nc7 8.O-O-O Nxe6 9.Rxe6 Rf5 and the win has evaporated.

5...Kg7
6.Bxh6+ Kh8
7.Bxf8+ Qh4
8.Rxh4#

Again, the mate is a ways out, but the decision tree doesn't have many branches on it.

Hope to see you all next week!

___________

Note: that cryptic line of letters and numbers you see underneath each board diagram is a representation of the position in what is known as "Forsyth-Edwards Notation", or F.E.N. It's actually readable by humans. Most computer applications nowadays can read FEN, so those of you who may want to study the position, you can copy the line of FEN and paste into your chess app and it should automatically recreate the position on its display board. Or, Windows users can just "triple click" on it and the entire line will be highlighted so you can copy and paste it into your chess app.

___________

So that about wraps it up for this week. Chess thread tips, suggestions, bribes, rumors, threats, and insults may be sent to my yahoo address: OregonMuse little-a-in-a-circle yahoo dott com.

27 Iceland has a pure patronymic naming system, like most of the world at one time. So everybody's named for dad, varying only by gender (-sson, -dottir).

Had never thought of this.

WTF will Iceland do about the idiotic "transgender" and pronoun nonsense? They only have two suffixes, for the two actual genders.

In this case, the latter. Her name is Arna Yr Jonsdottir and I took out the accents because they tend to make pixy barf.

35 NV primary raises the musical question: who is a more ridiculous candidate for prez of the USA, Obama or Sanders? Both absurd, but in different ways.

The country irredeemably beclowned and significantly damaged itself by letting Obama anywhere near an important position, and is unlikely to do the same with Bernie.

Then I thought strategically instead of emotionally (like Lefties) and thought, "if I was famous and had the ability to affect the votes of others, and thought that Bernie was a danger if he ran my country, and I liked what Trump is doing, how could I best help?

By splitting the party and have them fight each other in public.

67 NV's very weird. It's sort of like Alaska or Wyoming or Montana - mountain western "conservative" country - with Philadelphia or Cook County in the southern corner (Clark County, Lost Wages). More of an old-fashioned union machine than a corruptocracy (Cook County) or an ethnic machine (Philly).

I'm expecting Trump to win NV this time. Not by a lot - but he didn't lose it by a lot last time.

77 With a big divided field, the 15% requirement for getting delegates is going to hand the nomination to Bernie

NV shows this. Now add Bloomberg to the mix. If Bernie gets 25 to 30%, and the others don't get 15%, it's winner take all.

There will be pressure for some to drop out, but they'll mostly hang on until Super Tuesday ten days and it will be over

Bloomberg's plan will have backfired

Melania Trump brought her signature stilettos to the NASCAR Daytona 500 in Daytona Beach, Fla., on Sunday.
The 49-year-old first lady was clad in a black-and-white midi dress from Christian Dior, which she belted at the waist with a laser-cut white leather belt from Alaia, available on Net-a-Porter.com for $1,370.

On her feet, Trump wore her go-to power pumps, choosing Christian Louboutin's So Kate silhouette. The style has a 4.75-inch heel, a pointed toe and a low-cut topline, a feature that serves to elongate the length of the leg. Nordstrom.com stocks the classic pumps for $675.

161 So the deep state killed again one Phillip Haney an
Obama employee who was a whistleblower on Muslim Bros penetration of US Govt.

Timing of his death perhaps as warning to others.
Seems like a panic move by the deep state.

162 108 Speaking of 0, Philip Haney was murdered.

Okay.

Who's Philip Haney ?

The guy that sold the farm to Mr. Douglas ?
Posted by: JT at February 22, 2020 05:51 PM (arJlL)

TGP summary:

DHS whistleblower Philip Haney was found dead on Friday.
The whistleblower against the Obama administration was shot dead near his vehicle in California.

Haney told Sean Hannity in 2016 that he was ordered during the Obama administration to scrub the record of Muslims in the US with terrorist ties.

The story of his death has still not been reported by the mainstream media.

Haney had been missing since Wednesday.

Philip Haney said political correctness during the Obama years killed the investigation that might have stopped the San Bernardino Christmas terrorists.

from Law Enforcement Today:

https://tinyurl.com/thcy7yb

Multiple sources tell us that Philip's body was discovered outside San Francisco, CA, last night. The current indications point to him being shot to death.

It is unclear when it happened or how. The details are still emerging. As soon as we have more information, we will provide an update.

Friends of Haney told us that they spoke with Haney earlier this week and he'd never been happier.

They've suggested there's absolutely no way he would have taken his own life, and reinforce that he's had many enemies since he blew the whistle on the Obama administration.

Close friends of Haney tell us that his wife lost her battle with cancer in 2019. Haney was engaged to be married later this year. The author of See Something, Say Nothing was preparing to go back on the road in advance of the upcoming election. He was currently living in California, just west of San Francisco.

In 2018, Haney told Intercessors for America prayer activists that he had been working on a special assignment in Minnesota to stop Rep. Keith Ellison from being elected Minnesota's Attorney General.

As we approach the 2020 elections, friends of Haney's told us he was planning on doubling down on efforts to protect America from progressive leftists socialists.

....

Too early to call what actually happened. Maybe he shot himself, right?

It's funny how some things never change. Lots of people still hand-wring about how to get boys interested in reading. Simple: write about things boys (and men) relate to. I read two things in eighth grade which convinced me reading fiction was not a bad way to spend time: The Odyssey, and Call of the Wild. Both featuring action, adventure, adversity.

The sad thing is that I guarantee you that if I went through a book order form from school today (if they still have them; remember those?), it will be chock full of books that will be quite uninteresting to male readers. And no one will make the connection. And the hand-wringing and whining will continue.

Tolkien is good. Always. May be a bit dry depending on his age.

David Eddings. It is the same story done like four times over four series, but they are fun books.

John Ringo's Troy Rising would probably be pretty fun for a teen boy.

MHI books from Larry Correia.

Jim Butcher.

The Kehlsteinhaus (known as the Eagle's Nest in English-speaking countries) is a Third Reich-era building erected atop the summit of the Kehlstein, a rocky outcrop that rises above the Obersalzberg near the town of Berchtesgaden.

It was used exclusively by members of the Nazi Party for government and social meetings. It was visited on 14 documented instances by Adolf Hitler, who disliked the location due to his fear of heights, the risk of bad weather, and the thin mountain air.

I heard this a day or two ago, and find it interesting.

Lizzie the Native is staying in to stay in front of the TV cameras, and expects to lose.

But.... her real move now is to be Bernie's Veep.

They think alike, their followers will unite immediately, creating more momentum, and the Woman-as-VP will sell to the Leftie masses.

It sounds less crazy than other stuff coming from that far side of reality.

It is the second richest zip code in WA state, next to Island County. That is the San Juan Islands, where after they make their millions living in Medina, they move to the San Juans to retire.

They have their own police force in this small community, and if you drive down one of the streets where local celebrities, such as Coach Pete Carroll of the Seahawks live, you are followed as you drop off an acquaintance to a home a few doors away.

And then stared at, and followed until you leave the city limits.

No need to axe me how I know.

You can stick a fork in Fauxcahontas, I think. She was close to being out of money anyway, and that kind of performance isn't gonna inspire many donations.
