I'm not sure of the exact date tho, but they were definitely around by the time of High Impressionism. The colors were pure and varied, and allowed the artists to go outside the studio to paint. The Impressionists went ga-ga over them. Today's painting is not Impressionist tho. Too early, still another 7-8 years to go. Monet is still in his development phase. Here's the modern way, which is what I'd have expected, i.e. organic dyes.
PG36 phthalo green (yellow shade) pigment and PW5 white, rather than the original copper aceto-arsenite. Phthalo pigments were introduced in the 1930s and are synthetic pigments from the group of phthalocyanine dyes. Posted by: pep at March 06, 2020 09:51 AM (T6t7i) 124

At first I thought it was a Manet work. So, what's up with all his psychodelic splotches and haystacks ?
Posted by: runner at March 06, 2020 09:42 AM (Jm+IB) Impressionism is about capturing the moment, the "impression" of something before the conditions change. With Monet's haystacks and splotches, it about textures, lighting, color and atmosphere. That's why they're so splotchy, because at any second, a cloud could cover the sun and completely change the look of the scene. He has to paint it as quickly as possible. His paintings of haystacks, for example, aren't really about haystacks. I think the best example of what he's trying to accomplish is his Rouen Cathedral series. When his picture of her in that green dress made his reputation, he started treating her better. As she was dying, he funneled the funds from sold paintings to her health care. Posted by: NaCly Dog at March 06, 2020 10:00 AM (u82oZ) 164

I don't get the poll trolling about the Senate right now. Yes, the GOP has a *very* hard map this year. That's true, and it's very worrisome.
But we'e eight months and two seasons out from the election, there is no Dem presidential candidate yet - and the candidate and the candidate's performance have major implications for down-ticket races. Polling, if it is accurate (for however "accurate" they can be this early), is potentially useful for targeting campaign resources but very little else. It isn't predictive yet, even if it is accurate. It's a hard map and it'll be a tough and very expensive fight, but gloating or panicking over it at this point is foolish. As before, I will make one argument about polling, based on a few facts:
1) The parties and campaigns have their own captive polling units. 2) The captive polling units are very expensive to run. 3) The results from the captive polling units are typically kept secret. 4) The results from the captive polling units are used to guide campaign and party decision making. Given this, what is the point of the other polling units? If they were good, the campaigns and parties wouldn't need to massive overhead of running their own polling and data operations - they could use the public data to make decisions. They don't. They spend eye-watering quantities of money on doing it themselves. Which leads me to believe public polling serves only two potential purposes: - Information - Propaganda Given that it is impossible to differentiate in most cases, take all of it with at least a grain of salt. Remember that the parties and campaigns don't take it at all. Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at March 06, 2020 10:20 AM (I2dne) Posted by: garrett at March 06, 2020 10:21 AM (LZr7R) 278

Give me guys with power, MELODY and chops. Geddy Lee, Chris Squire, John Wetton. The fiercest, most in-your-face bass playing I've ever heard came from Wetton in King Crimson. Posted by: ok at March 06, 2020 10:25 AM (Uf3d9) Per the US State Departments website, as of yesterday, foreign nationals who have traveled to China will be denied entry to the USA. American citizens who have traveled to China are subject to a 14 day quarantine upon returning to the USA if they visited Wuhan, and may possibly be subject to a 14 day quarantine if they traveled anywhere else in China. The US State Dept. has issued for the past two weeks a DO NOT TRAVEL level 4 notice for China. The State Dept. has numerous Level 4 travel notices for countries, including Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, South Sudan, North Korea, Mali, Libya, Syria, Somalia, Burkina Faso, Central African Republic, Venezuela, and Yemen. China is also on that list, Italy is a level 3 generally and a Level 4 for the northern areas where Covid 19 is located. The idea that people are casually traveling to these areas, then coming back and being told they should stay home is absurd. Right now there is an entire cruise ship floating off the coast of California because a prior cruise had a passenger who came down with coronavirus and died after returning home. Everyone on the ship is quarantined. Posted by: Jen the original at March 06, 2020 10:55 AM (QwH7/) 433

Cheesemaking is a break-even proposition. Two gallons of milk for $8 gives ~two pounds of cheese. A store-bought 'brick' of "cheddar" costs about as much. Figure in the cost of culture, rennet, calcium chloride, and the electricity to age it for a year, and it costs slightly more to make it. That's offset by the fact that the result tastes like cheddared cheese, not orange modeling clay. Carry on. Posted by: Zod at March 06, 2020 10:59 AM (QgtlX) 452

Politico wrote an article about Joe, his age, and his, uh, mental decline back in October.
Quote: "I think that, uh, the behavior of this administration has awakened, uh, a whole new generation to get engaged in ways that they may not have gotten before," Biden said, referring to President Donald Trump and the current tumult. "Just like in my generation, when I got out of school that, uh, when Bobby Kennedy and Dr. King had been assassinated in the '70s, uh, late seven -when I got engaged, um, you know, up to that time, remember the, none of you women will know this, but a couple men may remember, that was a time in the early, late '60s, and the early '60s and '60s, where it was drop out and go to Haight-Ashbury, don't get engaged, dont trust anybody over 30. I mean, for real. What happened to them, by the, by the early '70s, the late '60s, there was a whole generation that said, 'Enough.' The war in Vietnam was underway, and it was - a lot of you served in that war - and, uh, we were fighting like the devil to make sure that there was something dealing with cleaning up the environment, which was only beginning. We were in a position where the women's movement was just beginning to move. We should have, by now, long before, passed the ERA amendment, but that was another issue..." Wait wait wait.
Do I gather correctly upthread that the "comb" with which Klobuchar was reduced to eating her salad was not, like, a man's ordinary comb, but one of those afro-fluffers called a "pick"? (I think I may still have one somewhere deep in the catacombs, from my brief afro-ish days, not enough decades ago.) I can see washing a pick off, pouring some alcohol on it, and it would serve. I just couldn't figure it out before. Don't make me think a tiny bit better of Klobuchar. Please! Although the thing is not that she ate with a comb but that she was b!+¢#y to her underlings about it, so the story went. So, no change.

That "Wynona's Big Brown Beaver" video has got to be the weirdest thing I've ever seen as a music video.

Buck Naked was killed by a homeless guy about 20 years ago, I think in Golden Gate Park. So this is an homage. Posted by: scottst at March 06, 2020 11:16 AM (+s6q0) 501
