If Trump loses Michigan, can he EO factories to close?
We never talk about it anymore, so there is probably a whole generation who have never heard about it, but when Kennedy came to power, after the New Deal retreads had spent a decade in the wilderness, there was hell to pay. As little as you may think of government procurement and acquisition processes now, they were much less accountable and more politically controlled then. And there were a lot of "ex-WWII" military industrial facilities still hard at it, and employing a huge number of people. Areas that did not support the Party, or did so with less than exemplary enthusiasm, were decimated. Military truck contracts, munitions plants, ordnance depots, parts and supply warehouses -- all over the country, were just shuttered. And as Vietnam and the Cold War ramped up, quite a few of those had to be replaced by other capabilities, located of course in politically correct areas. It was the Jacksonian Spoils System re-enforced, with terrifying effect. Some of those areas are still blowed up and hollowed out now, 60 years later. No "BRAC," no base-closing initiatives, no public committee hearings. The Party spoke, and your career disappeared. Boom. Posted by: Way, Way Downriver at February 20, 2020 03:31 PM (8IOEj) 242

Posted by: Ghost Of Qassem Soleimani at February 20, 2020 03:09 PM (BqBId) 48 I'm scratching my head on how Trump can be comfortably ahead in WI but behind in PA and MI. And the same polling firm! I don't get it. Posted by: WisRich at February 20, 2020 03:09 PM (G0vdT) These polls are registered voters, not likely voters. Once the likely voter screener goes into effect around mid September, the GOP always goes up in the polls since usually only about 55% of registered voters actually vote. As for the Wiscy numbers, if his numbers are actually that high there, that will mean Minnesota will probably go for the Golden Scalp Weasel in November. The polling at this stage is similar to 1996 and 2004 where an incumbent had a good economy but otherwise had problems which was ethics in Clinton's case plus Hillarycare and Bush's problem in the 2000 election debacle and Iraq. It is also similar to BO's reelection in 2012. As the field of opponents congeals into a few all too human candidates that are stuck with some unpopular issues, the incumbent by comparison looks better and better. Thus, you will see movement bit by bit over the Spring until Summer toward the incumbent assuming no change in the economy and employment. Trump's ceiling is probably more like Billy Jeffs or GWB's than BO's as a pct. of total vote but Trump could very well win something like 53-47 if all goes well. That might mean keeping the Senate plus coming really close to winning the House.

The political organizations maintain their own independent, private, secret and *catastrophically expensive* polling units. Why? Why bother if the public polling is good? And if the public polling *isn't* good, then what purpose does it serve? Could it possibly be to manipulate the public, to breed complacency or action? Hmmm. Turning and turning in the widening gyre The falcon cannot hear the falconer; Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold; Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world, The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere The ceremony of innocence is drowned; The best lack all conviction, while the worst Are full of passionate intensity. OT I got here late and am catching up on earlier threads. From the Morning Rant: "But reality is a bit different, and this is a good example of reality. Disarray in the most significant terrorist organization in the world is a very good thing, and anyone who suggests otherwise is a fool, or worse, someone who secretly (or not so secretly) hopes for American and Western deaths." I jumped all over, scanning the Corrupt Judge Amy Jackson Berman, and the Corrupt Representative Omar-Nur. And I didn't read the introductory paragraphs. I thought they were talking about last night's debate and the Democrat Party, not the Iranian government. I really did. Posted by: LeftCoast Dawg at February 20, 2020 03:44 PM (sy5kK) 361

Trump's ceiling is probably more like Billy Jeffs or GWB's than BO's as a pct. of total vote but Trump could very well win something like 53-47 if all goes well. That might mean keeping the Senate plus coming really close to winning the House.
Posted by: whig at February 20, 2020 03:34 PM (EUDB2) as you well know, the biggest and most unmeasurable variable is turnout. For example, suppose Trump only gets a total of 20% of black voters; BUT half of the rest just stay home on election day out of disgust? Then Trumps percentage of the votes cast from that segment would be 33%, which would be devastating. Posted by: Tom Servo at February 20, 2020 03:47 PM (Kpl3J) 383

I'll say this in defense of Bloomberg having a big ego - I'll bet anyone who manages to build a business empire the size and scope of Bloomberg's, earning that amount of wealth along the way, would have a similar sized ego. Contrast that with Obama who famously said in an interview that he was better at everything than anyone who worked for him as President. this from a guy who never held a real job, never practiced law, never ran a business, never did anything as a State Senator or U.S. Senator - but he had the ego that he was smarter and better than everyone. I'll give Bloomberg a little bit of a pass on having a big ego and thinking he knows how to handle things. Posted by: pantsomime at February 20, 2020 03:49 PM (ky+MF) 404

as you well know, the biggest and most unmeasurable variable is turnout. For example, suppose Trump only gets a total of 20% of black voters; BUT half of the rest just stay home on election day out of disgust? Then Trumps percentage of the votes cast from that segment would be 33%, which would be devastating. I can guaran-damn-tee if you peek into UMich's methodology, it's a stink fest poll. I "learned" sample polling in both stats and polisci courses back in the nineties and both departments were infested w bias. My stats 101 prof boasted in our first day that we could get ANY result we wanted and that was the goal. I havent donated a dime to that place and never will.

The "hate vote" will be there, but not in the numbers they were in 2018. Also, Trump in 2016 unknowingly ran against not only Felonious and the Clinton Crime Machine, but an active effort by a weaponized fed.gov to undermine him AND of course the media which wasn't in pond-scum level of support among Americans. Plus, you have millions of people who were voting against Felonious who are in 2020 voting FOR Trump. Posted by: DocJ at February 20, 2020 04:08 PM (77WPm) 577

this in the bag. They're panicked. Surely if the BAMN Fraud Machine is that finely tuned, they would just lean back and smile. They aren't This is why I think the Trump campaign is making such a big deal about primary GoTV and publicizing the primary vote totals, as well as publicizing the statistics on the rally attendees. They are building up statistics that could be compared to fraudulent poll and precinct voting numbers. Not that there's a direct correlation with these stats, but if they have a documented trend (such as NH stats on how primary vote totals doubled every other recent POTUS incumbent's votes), it makes it that much harder to fix the voting numbers and then claim "low enthusiasm," no party cross-over or whatever.
