Saturday Morning Coffee Break

rise-shine-20200206-1001.jpg

Good morning Horde. Let us take a look at a few stories that didn't get too much attention here at the AoSHQ this past week.

  • Paper ballots. Nothing wrong with paper.

  • Orange Mom bad.

  • From a pretty girl to a freak of nature.

  • Vet sticks up for himself. Oh yeah he's a WWII vet.

  • Keeping your mental health issues private.

  • Help a guy and make some money.

  • Too sexy or is there something else going on?

  • An unusual medical procedure.

  • Just another reason I call them "Burger Thing".

  • Honesty, the best policy. “high as f--k”

Hard to believe that this is the second to last Saturday of February. Enjoy these stories or something else in this open thread. No running with sharp objects, no taunting of the 'ettes and play nice with one another. Pretty simple rules.

    Have a great weekend!!!

We called it Wordling. Someone picks a word, a real but utterly obscure word, and everyone comes up with definitions for it. The definitions are judged by how creative or funny they are, not how close to the actual word they may be.

Whoever wins picks the next word and judges who wins.

20 Morning, all. Not only almost the end of Feb., but here the city is losing its collective mind. No, Obama is not coming to the Superdome. It's worse.

    Mardi Gras.

Hordes of people with beads draped around their necks, scads of cars all trying to get near the parade route as the floats screw up traffic for hours. Gah.

This weekend, too, has some decades-old associations for me, and I hate being reminded. Someday I will live somewhere that doesn't subscribe to the Annual Insanity. It'll just be Tuesday.

35 I saw that last night on the news, VIA. The first one I am waiting to see the context because it was an AP class, and they may have been illustrating propaganda. The second story, as far as I am concerned, every person involved in that decision should be fired. I know they are more concerned with restorative justice than they are about the victims. 70 We played a similar parlor game that we dubbed Fictionary. One person picks a (hopefully) obscure word from the dictionary of which nobody in the group knows the meaning. Other players write down a made-up definition. The one who picked then reads the submitted definitions out loud, mixing in the real definition. Everyone then guesses. You get one point if you guess the right definition and you get one point for every person. who picks your made-up definition.

My brothers hated playing with my dad and me because between the two of us one would recognize and know the definition of the obscure word about 85% of the time.

I drive on it every day on my way home. Not this past week, as it's the street the parades line up on before they start rolling, so I had to take another route to the bridge. But, usually, it's the main route for me.

I found out this week where the famous "A Warehouse" or "The Warehouse," where so many rock bands played between 1970 and 1982, was once located. It's long gone. A wall separates the street from the "Clarence Henry Expressway," a riverfront passage for railroad tracks and for trucks to load from ships. You can learn new things even about the place where you've lived all your life.

We called it Wordling. Someone picks a word, a real but utterly
obscure word, and everyone comes up with definitions for it. The
definitions are judged by how creative or funny they are, not how close
to the actual word they may be.

    118 Speaking of Wordling -

We have the best time when everyone gets together for Christmas or Thanksgiving or whenever playing-

    "Wise and Otherwise"

It's a game where you get the first or last half of a famous folk saying from some foreign country. The players fill in their version of the completed folk saying, then the leader for that turn mixes up the "sayings" along with the real one and reads them out loud. Points are given when your version fools someone.

It's great fun and we laugh a lot playing it.

    Another great word game is-

    "Pass the Bomb"

where you set the "bomb" ticking and pass it around until it "explodes". You can't pass the bomb until you come up with a word which uses the word fragment on the drawn card.

Stupidly simple but just hilarious as people get flustered and miss words. Maybe hard to find as it's an older one.

Both are great after dinner games.

In place with a real sauna culture, like Germany, you're not allowed to wear any bathing suit. You can wrap a towel if you need to be modest but you must be naked.

Rodrigo Borgia #141: Yeah, that was my first thought. "Who wears a bathing suit in a sauna?"

Yeah, I expected to see some really buxom or big-bootied gal whose nude form was the problem - like, sorry, but that's how I'm shaped. Surprised it was just the cut of her coveralls.

He's got all the cards in his hand: big money, big tech, big government, and fathomless contempt for us deplorables, who merely fight his wars and grow his food and build his buildings. Yes, it should be an interesting election. But one thing is clear: this contest isn't about race, or gender, or sexual orientation - it's about class, and the sooner everybody realizes this, the better.

Yes, the RINOs I know, who voted for Hillary or didn't vote for president in 2016, will vote for Bloomers but not Sanders. Former Goldman Sachs CEO and big time Dem supporter Lloyd Blankfein said that if Sanders is the nominee he would seriously have to consider voting for Trump. 312 The dude that is looking for a girlfriend and willing to pay for one is interesting.

The other night I was talking with the girl I am currently seeing and we were discussing online dating. I took the position that it was mostly people over representing themselves and that women preferred a man that would lie to them. She, of course, said that the opposite was true, that the most valued quality on a man was honesty.

So I bet her a steak dinner that I could create and honest profile on a dating site and that no one would "like" it or message it in a months time.

The profile I submitted reads as follows:

    I'm a mediocre catch.

No real motivation in life, few accomplishments, average looking on my best day, pretty sour attitude towards a lot of things.

I yell at the television sometimes, but not during ballgames, just because I'm irritable. Pretty much hate doing housework.

I have to be reminded of important dates and events two or three times. I snore quite a bit. I've been described by friends as pessimistic, cynical and inappropriate.

I'm not much of a conversationalist, except when I've been drinking, but then I'll probably say things you'd rather not hear.

I've got an inordinate amount of body hair in all the wrong places. If I take off my shirt, I look like I'm still wearing a sweater.

Overall, I'd say I pretty much suck.

I'm looking for a really superficially hot younger blonde chick that has a really high libido, hopefully one that is kind of stupid and just needs to latch on to any dude that can keep a roof over her head.

If you might be that woman, hit me up!

354 Holder has a new, cunning plan

18 years is enough for an unelected official - Supreme Court justice - wielding such power. Each president gets two picks which will decrease the political pressure in confirmation. Can be done by statute. Ask each candidate their position - including Trump. Reform is necessary

Now, I'm not completely in disagreement with the first part: 18 years is a long time in office and would basically clear out most of the detritus before they became too decrepit to do their job. However, I'd instead put an upper limit on it, something like "mandatory retirement at 78 years" or something like that.

Of course Thomas is over 18 years, and both Alito and Roberts are at 14 years, so you can see what Holder has in mind here.

The second part is just a transparent attempt to stop Trump from replacing any more judges, of which he could easily replace 3 in the next term.

And the last one is just... this was the Attorney General? The top lawyer in the USA? And he thinks congress can just pass a law to make constitutional changes??

25 years later, whenever my wife wants a laugh, she brings up the time she bought some expensive flea medicine for SIL's dogs. On the way to drop it off, we stopped at a roadside set of dumpsters to get rid of some trash.

Well we start to pull back onto the road when she says she can't find the damn medicine. We look in the truck under the seats, between the seats, behind the seats and can't find it anywhere. So wife thinks it accidentally got thrown in the dumpster. Stuff was expensive and SIL had already paid us for it.

I was volunteered to dive in the dumpster to find it. I was frantically pulling and pushing trash aside looking for it. Somebody else before us had dumped their old transmission in the dumpster and that grease and crap got all over me. I finally gave up and got back in the truck.

I told her...Well I guess we'll just have to pay her back. So we started to turn back on the road when wife flips down the visor because the sun was in her eyes and there was the box of flea medicine, fell right in her lap. Man, I was hot!

In fact, while I do a lot of cooking and baking, I rarely have the time to make rolled cookies, because my children and grandchildren are capable of eating them twice as quickly as it takes to make them. HaHa, beginning when just my children were teenagers, they consumed all types of food faster than I could drive to the store to buy groceries! They all ended up growing beyond 6 feet tall and played sports year-round throughout their school years. Consequently, most of our home-made cookies have always been the "drop" or "bar" variety -- with the exception of their favorite Christmas Snowballs (aka Russian tea cookies).

Eastwood's an old guy. Old people remember when being a Rockefeller Republican was a thing.

Now, I'm not going to argue it was a good thing, but before this current scrum we're having as a nation, parties like the Republicans used to have knock down drag out fights among themselves, to see which faction had the upper hand. Sometimes the Rockefeller Republicans won, sometimes they didn't.

Guys like Eastwood, who was once a mayor out there in Californica, would easily fall into the Rockefeller camp.

I suspect there are lots of them out there who don't care much for this Trump fellow, and it has nothing... NOTHING to do with them being secret commies or whatever. They're just the faction of the R party that isn't in power right now.

Bloomberg is obviously more of a Rockefeller Republican than he is a modern Democrat. I suspect Bloomberg would get a LOT of crossover vote.. if he was nominated. Would probably lose just as many if not more traditional Dems, but if there are longtime Republicans hoping for Trump's defeat, Bloomberg might look like their guy.

But, if you're talking subject matter. Not really.

Hell, they even made fart jokes from time to time, usually as physical comedy.

The greats like Shakespeare and Aristophanes made vulgar jokes and they've survived for hundreds of years.

So, I think it's safe to say vulgarity or the lack thereof is no indication of humor's quality.

438 My kid had a Y2K party, all ten-year-old boys who were more or less the best pals from school. It was FUNNY BECAUSE Mrs Downriver suddenly came down with some damn thing, had a high fever and didn't dare come out of the upstairs bedroom to a roomful of kids. I got to administer the whole affair, an overnighter.

Luckily I'd been a federal civil servant, and had supervised engineers.
It was rambunctious; a door was damaged, but we all survived. And, Y2K!

Fun part, all those kids have been spectacularly successful. The "worst" of them, who inherited alcoholism so does not drive, works for a specialty metal finisher and heads up a crew there. Good guy to know. The others, a national-level broadcaster, couple of EE's, two IT managers for major institutions, and a now-retired NFL lineman. My "biggest disappointment" was the black guy, later Navy ROTC, who cross-commissioned to the Army. Ah well, lads of the village and all that.

Make the Dims eat that shit sandwich, which they've lovingly created over the last 4 years.

Bloomberg exists strictly to allow Dims to draw votes away from Trump, so they can beat him with voter fraud.

The pepparkakor just as gingersnaps are easier to deal with if you chill a log of dough, slice thin and bake, or do spoonfuls and smash with a (heavily) floured glass.

But large extended family at Christmas meant gingerbread men and women for the little ones to decorate and eat, and traditional shapes like hearts and goats and dala horses and such were de rigueur for the professional elders on husband's side.

I used LOTS of flour to roll, then scrubbed the cooled end-results with a small beg brush to get off the excess before packing in boxes.

446 RE: Paper ballots. Nothing wrong with paper.

Utah election auditor apparently thinks she is smarter than the MIT researchers, knows nothing about computer security, and can't think outside of the box, but is confident the benefits outweigh the risks.

    From https://tinyurl.com/uhp7jnl
    ====================
But Amelia Powers Gardner, a Utah County, Utah, election auditor who supervised her county's rollout of the Voatz system for disabled voters and service members deployed overseas, told CoinDesk that at least some of the bugs the researchers found cannot be exploited in practice.

"[The researchers] weren't able to substantiate these claims because they were never able to actually connect to the Voatz server," Powers Gardner said. "So in theory they claim that they may have been able to do these things, and only on the Android version, not the Apple version."

She said the MIT researchers' effort comes from "what ifs, and perhaps, and maybes that, frankly, just haven't panned out," and that the app had since been patched.

For Powers Gardner, Voatz's benefits far outweigh any security risks. She said the software is a far better alternative for otherwise disenfranchised voting groups than the current technological solution: email.

We read a lot into the work of people we like. Many of Eastwood's plots were nowhere near as "conservative" as we let on -- I'd hold out Gran Torino as an example, but there are many others, plus the monkey, and, he cannot sing. So, we tend to back off, or make excuses, or just not believe it when he puts his foot down hard right in the poo. We are always up for a fight, either damn way.
I read the Tunku interview this morning, and it does not make any sense at all. It really does look like he just typed in an extra line at the end, as the jokes go. And that makes me wonder what old Eastwood was up to. See, I'm as bad as the restayaz.
