The Saturday Night Joke

The Class Reunion

A widower and a widow attend their 60th class reunion, and a spark is rekindled. They have a lovely evening as a long ago spark is rekindled.

At the end of the night the widower asks "Dear lady, will you marry me?"

"Yes, yes I will!" she says enthusiastically.

The next morning the widower wakes up troubled. He can't quite remember if she said "Yes!" or "NO!"

Confused, he decides to call her to confirm what happened and he asks "Last night, did you say yes or no to marrying me?"

She replies "Oh I said yes! And I am so glad you called because I couldn't remember who asked me!"

This Tree Is So Toxic, You Can't Even Stand Under It When It Rains

In 1999, radiologist Nicola Strickland went on a holiday to the Caribbean island of Tobago, a tropical paradise complete with idyllic, deserted beaches.

On her first morning there, she went foraging for shells and corals in the white sand, but the holiday quickly took a turn for the worse.

Great news for you beer drinking Morons.

A DAILY tipple nearly doubles a man’s hope of hitting 90, a study says.

Those on half a pint of beer a day are 81 per cent more likely than teetotallers to reach a tenth decade.

Women who drink similar amounts increase by a third their chance of reaching that landmark.

Even blokes who consumed three nips of whisky or two pints daily — double the recommended NHS maximum — are two-thirds more likely to live to that ripe age when compared to abstainers.

Is he guilty of Valu-Rite lunch or Keto Diet?

A former American Airlines pilot says that a popular Keto diet is to blame for his “unfair” termination after he was unable to pass a breathalyzer test.

Andre Riley maintains his innocence, claiming that he “wasn’t drinking” but that a change in diet was responsible for the allegedly false negative. He had been with the airline since 2012 and was fired last year after the test was administered following a Las Vegas-to-Charlotte flight.

“I don’t want to be punished and take consequences for something that I didn’t do. That’s like admitting to a crime or going to jail even though I didn’t do it,” he said in an interview with Fox 13.

He is fighting the Department of Transportation and American Airlines, demanding his job back, but it may take a whole lot of time and effort.

“Once they forward it to the Department of Transportation you’re basically banned from being a flight attendant,” he said.

I guess I wish I would have seen this article before my daughter was married this summer. The importance of dancing like an idiot.

One of the strangest but also most intriguing and redemptive things that humans get up to, in almost any culture one cares to study, is occasionally to gather in large groups, bathe in the rhythmic sounds of drums and flutes, organs and guitars, chants and cries, and move their arms and legs about in complicated and frenzied ways, losing themselves in the bewilderment of a dance. Dancing has a claim to be considered among the most essential and salutary activities we ever partake in. Not for nothing did Nietzsche, a painfully inhibited figure in day to day life, declare ‘I would believe only in a God who could dance’ (a comment that stands beside his equally apodictic pronouncement: ‘Without music, life would be a mistake.’

But dancing is at the same time an activity that many of us, arguably those of us who might most need to do it, are powerfully inclined to resist and deep down to fear. We stand on the side of the dance floor appalled at the possibility of being called to join in, we attempt to make our excuses the moment the music begins, we take pains that no one will ever, ever see our hips unite with a beat.

MATERIAL WORLD - Why the Restoration Hardware Catalog Won’t Die - The surprising persistence of the mail-order business

When you enter the RH (formerly Restoration Hardware) megastore in New York City’s Meatpacking District, you might think it’s a place to buy furniture. Technically it is, with tens of thousands of square feet filled with dining-room sets and king-size beds and couches, upholstered in shades of gray and beige and beiger, and accessorized with plush rugs and metal-armed lamps. Or maybe you’ll mistake it for a hotel lobby, with its high ceilings, ample seating, and smiling concierge.

But on either side of the store’s broad central path, you’ll see its true spiritual, if not practical, purpose: as a temple to the high-end furniture chain’s infamous “source books.” On twin circular tables large enough for an extended family’s Thanksgiving dinner (yours for $7,995 each), eight different editions sit in neat stacks and offer inspiration tailored to ski chalets, beach getaways, or nurseries for rich babies, depending on the tome. Bathed in golden light from enormous $12,000 chandeliers, the gods of direct-mail marketing beckon enticingly from their “carbonized split bamboo” altars.

The biggest of RH’s 2019 catalogs was 730 glossy pages—from a few feet away, you might think it’s the September issue of Vogue. The company would not reveal how much it spends on the lavish compendiums, but in 2012, an industry expert estimated that they would require a multimillion-dollar budget, with each individual book costing as much as $3 to print and ship—a figure that doesn’t include the tab for photography or page design. RH’s catalogs, and its price points, were similar to Pottery Barn’s and Crate & Barrel’s until the late aughts, when the source books and opulently appointed stores began to be introduced. Both are part of what longtime Chairman and CEO Gary Friedman has described as a strategy to project abundance and turn the heads of wealthy customers; apparently, it’s worked. In 2001, the company was teetering on the edge of bankruptcy. While there have been bumps along the way, RH’s sales since then have increased dramatically, and in December its stock price hit an all-time high.

Do you like to sing along to music? Don't always know the lyrics? Spotify is about to change that.

Spotify is finally giving you the tools to sing along without embarrassing yourself — or mumbling while you pretend you know the lyrics.

The streaming service is in the process of rolling out a new feature that displays the lyrics of a song as it plays, sort of like karaoke but without the drowned out vocals. There’s one catch, though: it appears that so far the functionality is only available to a limited number of users, according to AndroidPolice.

If he thought he was sober I would hate to see him when he's drunk. Our celebrating Genius Award Winner.

FEBRUARY 21--An Arizona man arrested for allegedly stealing a motorcycle from a Kawasaki dealership told police he was “celebrating 4 months of sobriety and decided he wanted” a chopper, according to court records.

Investigators say that Jackson Hanley, 29, was actually intoxicated when he walked into a Mesa dealership earlier this month and “grabbed a Kawasaki motorcycle and began pushing it down the street.”

Hanley, who rode his bicycle to Kelly’s Kawasaki, had his theft bid thwarted when a customer alerted an employee that a crime was in progress. Police were then summoned and Hanley was located about a mile away. “The defendant,” a cop noted, was found “resting on a fence with the bike slightly tipped over but still upright.”

81 I've somehow become the angel of death for my HS class. Classmates let me know of fellow passings and I have a monster email list I push the announcement out.

We've had three deaths in the last month.

We have grown old.

Is there some statistical evidence that if you make it to your late 60s there is a dropoff in death rate until late 70s/early 80s?

252 Personally, I didn't like the last episode of season 4 of bcs. Kim realizing Saul is a sociopath as he walks away celebrating his scamming of the appeals board is b.s. That's not the Jimmy we know. Not the one who cared for his domineering, mentally ill, backstabbing brother, or even the one who chased down the young girl rejected by the scholarship committee. He's a grifter, but not a sociopath. Remember how he threw himself under the bus for the old ladies? That's Jimmy.

We had a block party today down the street today. I'm having fun drinking Yuengling and chatting with the neighbors and guests, and our DJ guy has some Van Morrison on. I spot one of the local kids, a girl, eight, off by herself dancing alone. To Van.

When we got to the 50-50 raffle, I won a prize in draw one. After the raffle Mr DJ said we have a person wants to sing a song, It's the Van fan.

I don't know what it was she sang, but she blew all 150 of us away. At first it sounded like nothing, maybe off pitch, her trying to read the lyrics off the iPad in front of her. But she went into a chorus part and went off just plain out-of-body, head back, eyes squeezed shut, up on her tiptoes, wailing.

After, I gave her my raffle winnings, envelope unopened, and told her and her mom to maybe use it for more voice lessons, said I'd seen plenty of great shows, but this one song, tonight, was something special. Wow.

I gave the kids a mere $20 each to gamble. Don't know what they did with it. That's as gambly as I got.

The last morning, going to breakfast at a restaurant/casino early in the day, the casino was basically empty except for one guy at a one-armed bandit. Bent over, white-haired, scruffy beard, yellowed teeth, stinking, half-full drink glass, ashtray overflowing, plugging and plugging and plugging that slot machine.

Oh! the glamour!

That's my takeaway image for casinos in general and Las Vegas in particular.

Yeah, Seattle area is getting ridiculous, but not even as expensive as San Fran.

NYC, whoa.

I remember many years ago, flying into NYC for business, and that was when the Saturday night stayover flights were a big thing, the tickets were so cheap that it even paid for a room and expenses for a day and was still cheaper.

I checked into the Sheraton on 57th. It was late, so I just ordered room service, a burger and a Coke.

It was, I think, 1983. The check for a burger and coke was $28. For a comparison, a McDonalds Quarter Pounder with cheese at the time was $1.09.

I got hassled when I turned in the expense account. The bookkeeper had never been west of Montana.

421 403 In medieval Europe, a serf was a person who lived on the lord's land, and was suffered to do so as long as he paid his "rent."
In modern times, a man in the United States of America can live on his own land (that he bought, and paid for) as long as he can pay his property taxes.
In both cases, the end result is the same. Pay your taxes, or be removed by men with weapons.
Tell me what's changed?
Posted by: MarkY at February 22, 2020 11:29 PM (5RkWa)

You have the idea of serfdom a little upside down. It's not that they were allowed to live on the lord's land if they paid rent - it's that they were not allowed to leave. The feudal duties they owed were usually in the form of labor - as a serf you had to work so many days a month on the lord's land, or hauling his goods, or threshing crops, or whatever. If you didn't you would be arrested or beaten.

That's a pretty big difference.

But they pretend somehow that he was dignified and all this other blatantly false crap that we're supposed to go along with like we are about tucked men sharing ladies rooms with 12 year old girls.

In October 2016 he told Trump to "stop whining" about rigged elections. They just reported it straight.

What? That's okay because he didn't "tweet" it? It's such a joke. It's all so fucking ridiculous and phony. Besides, the first Dem candidate that gets a childish "sick burn" on Trump is gonna be celebrated like the arrival of the Twelfth Imam.

553 Maximizing Retirement.

If you're in a house that's worth a lot of money, and you own it outright or have major equity in it, maybe give this a try?

Fix it up and sell it off. Do your homework, and find a realtor who can get it at the top of the market.

Determine where you wanna live. Cost of living, etc. It all matters.

Look to invest the proceeds from the sale of your house into as many Rental Units as you can afford to squeeze into your portfolio. AVOID being a slumlord. Buy good, solid, middle-class or better properties. Set aside 3% of gross rents for maintenance.

Buy for yourself either a nice RV, or a yacht that suits your live-aboard needs. Why these options?

No property tax (CA taxes 'em though). No lawns to mow.

Keep re-investing rental profits into more rental units. Goal is to have a liveable income from a status of having 75% occupancy rate.

Rents go up a few percentage points per year, keeping up with inflation. *and* your properties are appreciating, all the while.

Contract a property management company to run the things, if you're not up to the challenge.

Finally.

When you've enjoyed all the "retirement" that you can stand, after maybe 10 years of rental ownership, sell the whole portfolio to an institutional investor.

The proceeds of such ought to damn well cover the final times of a Moron or 'Ette.

You know, parties, debauchery, The Villages, all that.

Oh, the weather's nice. But the politics is a killer. We're on the verge of a complete breakdown in order - shopkeepers in SF no longer bother to call the cops when people come in and take inventory without paying. The cops won't do anything, and if they did do something the DA wouldn't charge. The results are pretty predictable.

582 Oh, the weather's nice. But the politics is a killer. We're on the verge of a complete breakdown in order - shopkeepers in SF no longer bother to call the cops when people come in and take inventory without paying. The cops won't do anything, and if they did do something the DA wouldn't charge. The results are pretty predictable.

583 My wife (now of 42 years) had only read some words, and never heard them pronounced. One time, she mentoned the outside of a building, which she pronounced "fuckaid." You can imagine the hilarity that ensued (entirely one-sided," Then there was the time she called something "ptch white." But she's come a long way. But still amusing.

Why?

They're from my roots. I had to learn it all the hard way, from scratch. Up from nothing, with no more edumakashun than High School.

I've fumbled my way through more than a word or six.

Which is why I'm a better writer that talker, and always have been.

Still, at the Mo Meets? Your ladies will shine![/] I've absolutely no doubt whatsoever.

Just please be sure they groom your respective pelts, first, too?

Oh, you have NO idea of what you've just done.

You've called for and cause a Major Mo Meet to be soon summed from the aether, and to constitute itself near to your town, organize itself within the bounds of your commerce, and otherwise just dump itself upon your lap at the most inconvenient and inopportune time.

You'd might as well just fess up and tell us the "where", so we can figure the "when".

You see, we do have a particular talent, a unique skill set. We will track you. We will find you. And we will Mo Meet you.

617 Mine's a 47 but it's like Washington's axe. There's nothing original. The frame is WWII, with the machine gun mount. Original L4 ? engine, blah blah blah Body's a 47 with the tailgate, though. My daughter bought it off the intrnet when she was 18. She just turned 35. The $2000 rebuild only cost me $10,000, so I consider it a bargain. Ahem.

Posted by: Charles the Simple at February 23, 2020 01:32 AM (HuH1F)

618 NZFrank, feeding the M2 is costly, no? I mean if it's being used much.

Range where I volunteer occasionally gets ships' companies doing their qualifications, and they bring M2s. Of course the things completely obliterate the target stands (just wood stakes sitting in a metal base, intended for paper targets on cardboard backers). One day a lieutenant apologized to a couple of us ROs, we were laughing and said "that's what you're here for!".

Posted by: rhomboid at February 23, 2020 01:34 AM (El6T/)

619 With the passing of the greatest generation (there too), it's probably faded away, but "Willys" was the Russian word for jeep, of course picked up during WWII with the zillion jeeps provided under Lend-Lease.

I've noticed that Russian WWII films often are quite accurate in showing jeeps as the primary small vehicle for officers and others. So they must have a stock of them restored for movie use.

In the late '70s I saw a US jeep caisson that was being used as the trailer for a big tank of a beverage being sold in a park (kvas). Quite a thing.

621 40th anniversary of "The Game".

Many of the proper vintage won't even require any explanation of *which* game that was.

Younger folks might wonder where the "USA!" chant first became popular, and why.

I had heard the result on the radio before the delayed replay on TV was broadcast. Watched the replay with two friends - they didn't know.

I kept it to myself. I remember, with the tension building in the 2nd half of the 3rd period, that I sort of forgot that I already knew who won, and got caught up with my friends' excitement and worry that the Soviets would tie the score.

Amazing time.

Posted by: rhomboid at February 23, 2020 01:44 AM (El6T/)

622 Well, we did a frame-up resto- except for the body. ALMOST everything else was replaced- frame, steering wheel, steering box, brakes (upgraded to 10"), transmission, seat frames, radiator, windshield and glass, rear end. It's easier to say what wasn't replaced.

Posted by: Nightwatch stone axe smith at February 23, 2020 01:50 AM (kFkpX)

Any more than "Studebaker" - also the word used for heavy trucks, for the same reason - was a Russian name.

629 thanks to AOC spanish language campaigning

What "Spanish language campaigning"?

I don't think AOC actually knows Spanish, other than kitchen Spanish. I've certainly never heard her give a speech in Spanish.

Her father was born in the Bronx, and her mother strikes me as the sort of upwardly-mobile parent who would insist that English be spoken in the house, so her kids could get ahead.

AOC is laying the ground work for presidential run in 2024 if bernie doesn't make it.

That would be just hilarious.

If AOC survives the primary then the election. She's got Dems running against her in the primary as well as Republicans in the general. She had a cake walk her first go 'round as Crowley didn't take her seriously and did not really campaign. (He even sent a surrogate Spanish speaker to one 'debate' and not bothering to show up himself, that's how serious he took AOC.) Then, in the general, she was up against someone who was just a name on the ballot as he didn't campaign, either. This time, she's going to actually have to campaign and I don't think those campaign stops are going to be super friendly after the Amazon fiasco, along with her idiotic statements overall.

Let's just say I hope she's a shooting star that burns up in the 'campaign' atmosphere and fades quick. Her supporting radical Dem candidates against Dem incumbents won't endear her to the Party, either, which means no DNC campaign money. Napoleon Soda sure ain't gonna give her any money.

I'm not saying her seat is flippable, but it could happen as NYC is fed up with progressive laws like the No Bail Law and the sanctuary bullshit. Plus, Trump has really long coattails.
