It took me two days to remove a 30 yr old, corroded tub drain. Miraculously I did not destroy the old pipe, or tub, that it fits into, praise heaven. I finished the job about 40 min ago.
The replacement drain I bought to replace it is 1/4" too big.

She brought up that it course things like elective surgeries to be cancelled to conserve supplies. I wonder if anyone in the medical community has really captured this.

All you need to know about the numbers coming out of China, I posted a few threads back. In short, they are welding doors shut for apartments of people who test positive.
This means that 99% of people avoid all tests. They avoid the test since they do not want to be welded into their home to die.
That is the point. You punish people in order to "encourage the others" and China is doing their best to reduce the numbers reported.
So, Make up your own numbers 10x? 100x? who knows but it is much worse than they say simply because they want it that way.

Why are Chinese Dr.'s still using N95 masks? are they unable to produce decent PPE? They built a hospital in 10 days! Japanese quarantine worker tested positive, they say he wiped his face with glove, and took off mask and reused, so it seems better PPE is vital and China knows this since the body count of their own health care workers seems high, but again, they are not reporting that.
What about details on who has left the country, when, and to what cities? This is China, they have pervasive monitoring and data processing of their citizens, and yet they appear to be doing nothing to warn or help other countries (that I know of, but I see nothing reported.)

I was laid off in 2009, a few days before my birthday. Thanks, Obama! I spent six months applying for jobs with every civil engineering company within a hundred miles of my AO. Most did not respond. Some of the better ones did. A couple actually expressed interest, and were kind enough to let me know that they had hired someone else.
But there was a lot of radio static.
So, I spent two and a half years at Walmart, until I was miraculously rehired by my old company.
Weird, but, damn it, I love the people I work with. At a Christmas party my boss gave me a big bear hug and said he hated laying off so many people and that he was so glad that I did not hold a grudge. I told him, man, it was not your fault. Apparently some people blamed him.

Most companies just scan the resumes and do a search for certain phrases on your resume. If your resume has that term, it makes the first cut.
The Mrs found that out 5 years ago when she was laid off. Her company gave them access to a job search company, and they told her to tailor her resume for each job she applied for. It worked. Her company rehired her 2 months later for a better position in the department she always wanted to be in.

I was told to tailor my resumes to each job by a job search firm my former company paid for us to use back in 1994, before all the resume scanning technology. When I told people later that you had to have multiple resumes when one is searching for a job, tailoring the resume bullet points to what you could glean from the job posting, people either thought I was nuts or 'too much work'. If I was told the latter, I would then explain that looking for work IS your full-time job at the moment. Any who still gave me dumb looks needed, as Berserker points out above, some warlordin' done on them.

I would say the "Open Borders Now!" crowd has been subdued of late, though (or course) there is a subset or component that seems to think it is (wait for it) "racist" to try and protect oneself, or one's community, or even a whole country from the pandemic. These people really are too stupid and/or dangerous to keep around any longer. Now that's a fact.
It seems to me if they would have enacted serious hard core travel bans a month or so ago, it would have made a tremendous difference.
Then there's some concern, perhaps justified that this is an escaped bioweapon from the facility at Wuhan. Or, maybe it isn't a modified virus, just sloppy controls. It does seem the government response is completely out of proportion to the numbers. Something like 400 to 600 million people are on lockdown or quarantine.
So imagine say, if 1/3 or 1/2 of the American population was told to stay home for 3 weeks. What could go wrong?

Yeah that's not good. 30 years ago I was offered a job by a company, and then never heard from them again. They didn't return my calls, and never responded to any letters I sent. I figured they changed their minds.
Same thing happened to my sister a few years earlier. Offered a job, told when to report for training, and they would send her a info packet. Never received it, called them repeatedly and never heard anything back. After a few months of this, she finally talked to someone, and they said they closed her file because she didn't report for training.

My last job I read resumes for hiring in my dept. Honestly, I never read cover letters, just the resume; if the resume piqued my interest, I'd read the cover letter to see how literate the person was; written illiteracy = no attention to detail = either EPIC FAIL or future lawsuit. I know cover letters are important style-wise, but reality is a whole 'nother issue. I didn't have time to read cover letters, just scan (with my eyeballs) the bullet points/company history.

At a certain level you don't use resumes anymore to obtain opportunities, but I do look at them for below C suite managers not referred by my contacts and the team looks at them below that.
But what I would caution any resume reviewer is, the worst decision to use when hiring is that you must have a proven leaders in every position on the team - what I found when I saw that was a collection of A type personalities that spent more time arguing or politicking than producing. Ugh. Hire some B types, will ya?

They charge fine, but some of these nutbars drive their bikes all winter. Usually winter is where the custom builds, or resto's, or basically big jobs happen, and you got bikes seriously torn down and unmovable on the lifts that are getting done that usually aren't urgent to move off the lift. Its never a problem until mister freeze breaks a clutch cable or needs brakes, and now you got a bike on the lift with no back wheel or front end that you now have to move somehow to make room for the true believer.

It's specialization. My wife is in banking, when she was laid off she was in consumer loans, the jobs she was applying for were in consumer loans and commercial loans, both departments having different skills for the jobs, and departments within those looking for different skill sets. The moment she started tailoring her resume to each job she applied for, she got interviews and job offers.
For the most part, cover letters aren't used very much now, you just upload pdf or .doc of your resume online.

Remember the talk of all the people that the Obama folks embedded in the White House from mid December 2016 to early January 2017? These leakers are those people.
Trump isn't used to subordinates setting up fiefdoms in his organizations, so he was kind of shocked at how easy the people in the WH would leak things to the press. It's why Ivanka and Kushner seem to be his intermediaries that he sends out when he wants radio silence.
I wouldn't be surprised if he launches another mole hunt this June and September to clear out the rest of the leakers before the election.

I think most of the horde here has not been exposed to a lot of the video coming out of the PRC. You are not going to find it from the MSM and twitter and FB have been nuking a lot of it. When you filter out the bogus trolling - which accounts for about 80% of it, in the form of mis-attributed older video - it is not looking good.
There are a number of apparently legit videos of hospitals, building exteriors/breezeways, and vehicles stacked with body bags, with people in PPE scurrying about. Hospital workers trying to fit multiple dead children into a single body bag. Lots, and I mean lots, of footage of individual apartments and entire buildings being sealed up by guys in PPE - welding and piling debris seems the common method. People getting chased down - those who fled Hubei are being rounded up - and shoved into vans.
The PRC almost certainly either knows more than they are letting on, or they strongly suspect. We know for a fact that the labs in Hubei were creating chimera coronaviruses by combining them with other more lethal diseases, because they published papers on it. My guess is a simple lab screwup, which they are already notorious for.

There are not all that many confirmed in the US, yet, but most new cases that have been in the US for a while are being leaked online 1-3 days in advance - they are not releasing info in a timely manner.
My state alone has several hundred people being monitored with half-ass DIY stay at home quarantine.
Containment in the US is all about slowing the rate at which cases require serious medical attention; we're not going to avoid this. First, their screening methods were worthless for those not coming straight from the PRC. Second, a large fraction of the test kits that were distributed were flawed. We're already seeing those that tested negative and who were released come back with symptoms and test positive.
If some of the 200 or so released from quarantine the other day don't come back positive later, I will be shocked.

ZH is never a reliable source when it comes to Russian newz, and it is a bit conspiracy theory oriented, but still their coverage is at least extensive.

Yeah me too, I would be leaving bodies if I worked in an office. I always had backup careers to fill in the gaps in case the music thing went pair shaped, and it had a few times. I always made sure it was something where leftists generally were nowhere to be found. Even the music genre I stayed in was usually safe, although these days I'm not so sure because of the so many damn sub genres and cross contamination. Its why I stuck with the harley thing as a backup. It breeds Attila the Hun types. lol

Yep. My friend works for a large commercial real estate company in NYC. (She's met Trump a few times in the past.) All but three people in her office are full of Trump hate. Even going into the kitchen for a cup of tea, the others there are full-throated with their TDS; she can't say anything because she's afraid they'd just fire her. Before the 2016 election, she publicly stated Trump could win. The 'how could you possibly think that?' ridicule she endured was nauseating. After the election, she just had a big ol' shit-eating grin on her face all day and the rest of the company left her alone. She never rubbed their noses in it. But had Skankles won, you can bet the house they would have not held back their insults.
This is why I think Trump will win in a landslide, a landslide in modern terms considering the left are spotted the electoral votes of CA, NY and IL. People instinctively know to shut their mouths when it comes to politics in the workplace, or go along with the lefty mob, but once in the voting booth they are ticking their ballots for Trump.

Moving the attic ladder to its new, permanent location has been a huge success. I can climb the ladder, plant my butt on the tin roof of the trailer, and roll over onto my knees, and I am within a few feet of most of the shit I have to work on. Saves a lot of time on entry/exit to the attic space.
And I went out into the back yard, and filled another 35 gallon trash bag with weeds I hoed out of the ground. Two-three more such bags, and the back yard will be weed-free again.

I think the deal with a neutron bomb is that you if you detonate it high enough above the target, the blast damage is fairly restricted, but the prompt radiation will kill everyone exposed to it. Useful if you want to take over the enemy's infrastructure and use it.

If the coronavirus hits here, with a lot of people getting sick, some dying, and the economy tanking due to the epidemic, then the status quo doesn't look so good anymore. It's not helpful.
Politically, we need to get all the Democratic candidates on the record opposing any restrictions on travel from abroad to fight this thing - we can then blame them.

Not likely. This kind of virus mutates relatively quickly. Even if you had a 100% effective vaccine when you released it, it's entirely possible your vaccine becomes worthless in a few months. Even if the Chinese government is that Machiavellian (which I don't believe), this isn't the vector they'd choose for such a strategy.

that is a good point Ace's liver. And not Vietnamese decided to attack us on our own soil like so many others have done. I don't excuse them a bit, and i have good reason to hold them in enmity. They were barbourus and they never fully came clean on POW's.
But you have a fair point. I think I read they had been in a constant state of war since ww2 until at last Vietnam and possibly longer. They have fought a lot of enemies and likely changed sides. I also here most modern Vietnamese like America. I get why it is weird to many, so many sacrificed so much and that is a hard thing to get over. But it is true most Americans came to like Germany and Japan not long after the war. The human spirit can really not be over estimated.

i am not sold on the stuff but since i like it no worries there. i use it because i like the taste not because I think it is particularly significant. They say all vinegar works the same way, it does not have to be apple cider. And this is from someone who loves hard apple cider. Hell I made the stuff many times. But there is nothing particular about it that makes it stand out from any other vinegar other than the hype. But if you like it, go for it.
I personally use evoo and citrus on my salad. There is something about vinegar that really does not do well with wine. Vinegar is the enemy of wine and no enemy of wine is a friend of mine.
If MLA was not talking about apple cider vinegar as I presume, I will be all wet i guess.

you have obviously spent some time in New Orleans. as a total aside, there is a funny SNL skit called "Maine Justice"on youtube. They did the skit twice and both of them are funny. The joke is that a lot of people from Katrina were relocated to Maine. But in the comments, so many people from Maine are defensive and act like they have no clue what it is about.
Now i am no big city geographer. But I recall learning that after LA. Maine has the most French speakers in the country. A lot of the people who ended up as Cajuns down in LA came from Maine and Eastern parts of Canada. It was interesting that no one in any comment mentioned, acknowledged, or even realized the French influence in Maine.

Oddly, or at least odd to me, I have on occasion looked up half remembered Biblical verses while commenting here at AOSHQ. One thing I have noticed is that while many translations are available, many lose the lyrical/poetical elegance of others.
Not really going any where with this, just something I have noticed. Except to say that it reminds me of the discussion earlier in the afternoon yesterday about how many modern scholastic material is perhaps the driest material available for the teens that are assigned to read it.

I think it's great-and interesting--that you recall Bible verses. Some people feel very strongly about the KJV of the Bible being the only one Christians should use. I don't, because I think any Bible that draws people to scripture and to God is fine, but there is a majesty and beauty that the KJV has that some others don't. I like the KJV of Psalm 23,. for instance. Would never use another version in memorial services

I have sworn off air travel after my last business trip to Pittsburgh. It took me 12 hours to get home on a trip I could have driven my car in 10 hours. And all that time I was a smoker and could not smoke during that 12 hours.

That would be great. But I have a 1 hour drive to get to the airport, but assuming a non-stop flight from Florence, SC to Pittsburgh takes about 2 hours that would have been at least 4 hours. But hey, that's better than 12 hours.

I don't think "election year" indictments will be seen by many as anything more than a ploy and will be spun accordingly.
